finally a chinese place that is free of MSG and full of flavor.

This place is pretty AMAZING.  The staff is really nice and food was awesome.  We got the chicken and green beans and curry noodles and it had the perfect amount of spice and the green beans were perfectly cooked.  The curry noodles were tasty and not oily or soggy like a lot of places.

We made our order to go so as we waited the server gave us tea and hot and sour soup as we waited.  That made the whole experience that much better.

We will return!

Onion pancake, awesome, you should try, it was flaky and yummy, house bean curd, awesome, I thought the flavor was incredible, scallops, awesome, I suggest extra spicy, string bean shrimp, awesome, the string beans were so fresh they cracked when you bite into them, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly.

The seafood was cooked amazingly, the scallops were perfect.  My aunt and mom liked it also.  I will definitely go back.  While I was there I remember that I said, "You can tell the cook cares about their food.  I want to go and kiss the chef.  You can taste the love!"

Our waiter was also really friendly.  5 stars.

What a fabulous little place, run by friendly brothers Jeff and Eddie. I met a friend there for dinner last night. Why is that part of town so cute? I want to move to Church Street, preferably somewhere between around 20th-30th. SO CUTE! Noe Valley is absolutely filled babies and puppies. So weird.

Anyhoo, the restaurant itself has a very nice decor, white walls with dark tea green accents such as the dinner sets and some other accents, such as small hanging lamps, were in shanghai red. I happen to love that color combo, so I was very happy.

Eddie is super friendly. My friend and I met a little before 5:30 and he came and chatted with us for a bit. WARNING-BETWEEN 6:15 and 7:15 THIS PLACE IS PACKED, PACKED, PACKED so if you are in a super big rush, be mindful of this.  Once the place got jumping, Eddie was a blur of humanity, rushing around, taking orders, talking to the line cooks, answering the phone.

So the food. I ate. And I ate. And I ate. And I ate some more. Honestly....I ate A LOT. Everything was delicious and spicy. Next time I go I am going to ask them to hold the salt. If I had done do this time, I would be giving them 5 stars.

I ate so much I can't even remember what I ate. Honestly. We had dumpling and little fried spring rolls to start. Then a cold noodle dish with peanut sauce and cucumbers. Then something from the seafood section that was delicious.

Everything was perfectly spicy, not all crazy spicy like your throat is going to bleed and your forehead starts dripping sweat, but spicy enough to give you a massive endorphin rush. I had a major headbuzz going on after eating here. Or maybe it was the wine? No corkage BTW.

I took home a beef dish and a noodle dish for the hubby and he nom nom nommed it down very happily :-).

I swear to god, their Hot and Sour sauce has healing abilities.  Every time I am sick, I go there and get a giant tub and I am healed within days.  Jeff and Eddie are so nice and friendly, they are a welcome addition to the neighborhood.  Their pot stickers are addictive - ask for their hot sauce- and you are in heaven.

Glad you guys have moved to the neighborhood!  My health thanks you and your hot and sour soup!

Went to Henry's based on a recommendation from a friend.  The decor is nice-clean and modern with nice touches.  The staff, (Eddie) is very friendly and helpful.  Service was excellent as was the food.  I will most definitely return.  I'm a big fan of Eric's chinese down the street, but over the years have just grown a little bored - Henry's is a very nice change.  Give them a try ....you won't be disappointed!

Really good Hunan American Chinese although I still think I prefer House of Nan King.  The experience was limited by the fact that I only had two other people to share dishes with, and one of them was my sister, the vegetarian.  The dumplings (steamed pork - no other option) were large and delicious, the hot and sour seemed homemade and was good but a little too much on the sour side, the ma pa tofu was ok but I don't think this would be one of their stronger dishes, and the spicy braised rock cods were tasty, although everyone was disappointed when they came out breaded.

http://Bomb.com for sure.

Someone (my BF) said spicy and I said Yes Please!  We started off with the potstickers.  Get the potstickers.  They were unlike any I had before.  The dough encasing the pork was extra doughy and just plain delicious.  We then went on to chow mein and kung pow chicken.  The spice was perfect and the doughiness of the chow mein noodles was just as delicious as the potstickers.  If you can not tell by now, I love doughiness.

The waiters were extremely nice as well as the decor inside.  Take a look at the pictures near the front, there are some funny baby ones.

The food is some of the best Chinese food you can find in the city, if not the best. I love every single dish I've tried, with special emphasis on the Hot and Sour Soup, the Garlic Chicken, and the dumplings.

More than that, I love Jeff & Eddie. They're the nicest, most accommodating, and dutiful hosts I've seen in a restaurant. They remember everyone who comes in, they treat everyone like they're the most important customer, and things only get better for return customers.

This is the best place.Ever. Not only is the food fresh, fast and delicious, the staff is incredible.

We recently moved into the neighborhood and called for delivery during our move-in. The staff on the phone was incredibly polite and described various dishes as we didn't have a menu in front of us. When they came to deliver, they were like chipper-skippers.

Fast forward a week and we ordered again (the same thing). This time, my boyfriend blanked and forgot that he didn't have any cash. So instead of the delivery guy (he's so nice!) getting mad, he just took down the cc information and chatted with us about the neighborhood and remembered us from the first order.

But seriously, the food. We get chicken and brocolli, chicken chow mein and spring rolls -- spicy if the boyfriend is up for it. It's not greasy and packed full of flavors.

This made me hungry, I will probably order tonight.

Cute little place around the corner from where we live - nice bar to sit at if you are on your own, and really good service.

The only issue I had with the food is it tasted too salty.  I ordered a noodle dish and a chicken dish.  The hot and sour soup is delicious - but could be a bit more spicy.

Since this is my neighborhood restaurant, I will definitely try it again.

Not bad but not good.  The food was fairly bland, not a lot of flavor.  The hot and sour soup was more sour than anything else.  I had some chow mein which was ok, and the sauteed eggplant, which was also just ok.

I give the food 2 stars, as I don't think I'll be going back.  I gave an extra star because the service was excellent and very friendly.

Our favorite in the city.  The dumplings are not just anyone's "pot stickers". they are great and with a great sauce. My favorite is chicken and string beans, and Neil's is just about everything they make. The seafood is especially good. Nothing is ever overcooked. The service is great and you are always remembered.

Wow, I don't know why I should be so surprised at this restaurant, but I am.

My friends and I go to Toast just opposite this restaurant all the time and decided to try this place.

We ordered two noodle dishes, one tofu, one chicken and one pork and it was all extremely tasty. Not to mention that after getting five excellent dishes and some drinks the price tag was still under $50.

The place is clean and has good lighting. The servers have some awesome smiles.

Also, I accidentally went in the back to where there kitchen was when I had meant to go to the bathroom and met the chef in the back. An older grandfather looking guy with an awesome smile and looks like he can kung fu the dough with the best of them.

Anyone, everyone, please frequent this place. You won't be sorry.

Ordered kung pao chicken and orange chicken, both mediocre. While the spice was right (pleasantly spicy - enough to please a Mexican, but not painfully so), the texture and taste of the chicken was just weird.

The hot and sour soup is pretty damn good, so I gave them three instead of just two measly stars.

Doubtful we'll return, however.

I'm a huge fan of Henry's - been eating for years at their SOMA location, and I was pleasantly surprised when they opened a location on Church. The service is very friendly, and the chicken curry is probably the best I've had in the City. The onion cakes are great, as is Henry's Special (chicken and shrimp in a Hunan sauce).

I crave it, and it's definitely going to give Eric's a run for their money being a block away...I'd say it takes the crown as the best Chinese food in Noe Valley, and up there city-wide...

I heart Henry's Hunan.  I use to patronize the Sansome and 2nd Street locations.  Now I'm glad there is one closer to my area.

Upon arrival, I was allowed to sit anywhere.  The host/waiter took my order immediately but was soon forgotten.  During my time there, he was attending to the two women the whole time.  The cook/waitress bought me my order.  She asked if I got my soup which comes with my order.  She also got my tea.  Hmmm, the waitress made up for the waiters rudeness, so minus one point for him.

My order, Diana's meat pie is my obsolute favorite.  The meat pie is sandwiched with tasty seasoned ground pork, parmesan cheese, and shredded iceberg lettuce.  The tortilla like crust is brown and flaky.  My pie was served with a bowl of hot and sour soup which was also tasty.

The waitress was very attentive.
The interior was clean and modern.
There is parking during the day.

The good:  Attentive waitress

The bad:  The waiter who was distracted by another customer.

Very fresh and tasty food at a very, very reasonable price in clean surroundings with polite attentive service. Like other customers we had a salty experience. Whilst the Eight Delight Vegetables (quite hot) and Orange Chicken (fresh and tangy) were delicious, the Kung Pao Shrimp was so overly salty the first time it came that we couldn't eat it and asked to send it back and we're not prone to doing that. But they happily replaced it, even though it was already replacement for a misheard Kung Pao Pork. I will definitely go again.

If you're not craving a huge amount of salt and chili spice ask them to tone down both on your order.

THEY DO NOT USE MSG; I have a very strong reaction to it and all was fine at this place.

Henry's Hunan is a couple of blocks away from where I'm staying here in the Noe Valley area of San Francisco.

Small place.  Reasonable amount of seating.  Place was clean and friendly.  We got seated right away (7:00pm on a Friday evening).

Tea was brought to the table right away - which I liked.  Started with an appetizer - spring rolls.  The came hot and crispy.  Not too greasy (which is usually one of my pet peeves with most spring rolls).

I had the Mongol Beef.  My dinner companion had the Hunan Shrimp.  Both dishes were very good.  Not the best I've ever had, but quite respectable.  Beef was tender, tasty with a nice mix of onion and hot pepper.  Shrimp was done perfectly, tender, moist and flavorful.

Service was quick and efficient.  Dinner for two cost us $31 with the tip.

Bottom line - if you are in the area, this place is worth a try.  I'll probably be back again in the near future.

It was ok. I ordered from them based on the reviews i read here, and with all due respect, those that say henrys is better than Eric's or Alices clearly don't know what they're talkin about. Henrys doesn't have anything on either of them. Even big lantern is better. Sorry, but I won't be ordering from them again.

so i decided to give this place another try after not having a good experience the time before.  i ordered the mongolian beef, curry chow mein, and some kind of chicken.

the food tasted good at first, but a little more than half way through my meal everything began to taste very salty.  i think they use a lot of MSG.  i couldn't finish my food because it was drying out my throat.

i would have to save the service is good.  the lady there offered us rice free of charge since our noodles would take a long time.  is it weird to expect tea at an asian restaurant?  i feel offended when they don't automatically serve tea to me or ask if i want it, when i see other tables with tea on it.

i'd rate this restaurant a 2.5

Mmm...Henry's is my favorite chinese food i the city.  I have been to every location and while the decor is a bit different at each location the food is pretty consistent.  We live close to the Byrant street location which is good for lunch and now for DELIVERY.  However for dinner when we feel like dining in we will go the the newest location on Church.  All the ingredients are fresh and the spice level is always good.  Although I feel like things are a little less spicy at this location.  My absolute favorite things to order are:

-Kung Pao Chicken
-Hot n Sour Soup
-Meat Pie

Thanks for the yummu chinese Jeff and Eddie!

these guys are great. very friendly and welcoming.  i've only ever ordered meals to go- but the restaurant always struck me as very comfortable and clean.  the best chinese food in the neighborhood as far as i'm concerned.

my only reasons for not giving a perfect 5 stars might not be detractors for others- parking in the neighborhood can be a drag (but the j-church stops right in front for easy public transit access), and whenever i order a full meal for 2 (with appetizers, soup and entrees and rice) it's always a bit more costly than i'd hope (though still more reasonable than many alternatives).

It's good here.  Had the: Onion Cake-hot and crunchy!  Spicy and Hot Rock Cod Filet-nice heat with just enough sauce to coat each piece of fish, deep fried but not greasy.  Prawn fried rice-good flavor and the prawns were fresh, large and cooked well.  Plus, the rice was cooked perfectly(very important in Asian cooking:)

Oh, and their hot sauce is roasted chili flakes in oil with salted black beans, yummy!

Staff is friendly.  Prices are fare for the 'hood.

I have a friend who looooves Henry's. I don't eat a whole lot of Chinese food, but I'm told Henry's is "fresher" than most. Today I had a hankerin' for fresh veggies and rice so I ordered Vegetable Fried Rice. I believe I can recreate the recipe:
2 cups steamed white rice
1 cup oil
1 can mixed peas n' carrots.

Seriously -- there were no other vegetables!

I've ordered a bunch of other things from here, all were fine, but I think this may be the last visit for me.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!

I have some friends that live just down the street. We used to go to Eric's all the time but now we go to Henry's! They totally stole us!

The first time I came here was for my birthday. It was pretty packed for a Friday and the place is pretty small. But we didnt have to wait too long.  We were all starving when we arrived and it did take our food awhile to get to us...but they were really busy and there only seemed to be one server for some odd reason. But it also was their opening week. Once our food came we were delighted. We order the tofu in meat sauce, chicken with string beans and i forget the other dish but it was good! All had a little kick to it which was even better. I can say this and mean it...but it's BY FAR the best chinese food i've had in a long time.

I've come here only one time after and that was to order to go...basically the same stuff and it was still good even for take out! My friends that live down the street go here frequently and have tried new things and from what they say everything is pretty good and the staff is very friendly.

HENRY'S HUNAN COME TO THE PENINSULA PLEASE! But you are well worth the drive and looking for parking time :)

Not only is the food great, the owners are wonderful.  They always remember my name, my order, my child's name and I've seen them do the same with other friends.

My favorites include:

Country Style Vegetables
Shrimp with Broccoli

and above all, their dumplings!

They are an amazing addition to the Noe neighborhood.

PARENTS: They are fantastic with little ones and serve them a special plate of veggies and non-spicy tofu.

The pork noodles.  The onion cakes.  The potstickers.  The Marty's special.  The beef with mothereffing broccoli.
I would eat anything on the menu, this place is great.  Jeff is the nicest (and hardest working) guy in the world.  The Noe location gets more traffic than the Bryant St. location which is great but makes me sad because I don't get as much one on one time to chat with Jeff.

For the last year or two, nearby Alice's has been my go-to place for Chinese.

Please don't tell Alice . . . but, I cheated on her last night . . . with Henry!   And he did me good!

I'm not Chinese nor have I ever been to China but my guess is the food here is more authentic. Too often I find Chinese food laden with too much salt & too much sugar. Each dish can tend to taste like the next. That was not the case at Henry's.

We started with the dumplings. Surprisingly, they were steamed, not fried. They were served in a small bowl sitting in a yummy, lightly spicy sauce. Very good. We also split the Velvet Chicken (they only use white meat here..YAY!) and Henry's Shredded Pork. Both were excellent.

The space is a little cramped and the service a little inattentive but I am really glad to have a new much better than average Chinese place nearby!

Bad news Bears, kids.

I totally order a boat load of shit:
I'm talking spring rolls (deep fried, not fresh like Vietnamese ones),
won ton soup, beef w/ broccoli and velvet chicken (aka, chicken with
a bunch of vegetables in a savory sauce.)

I ate the spring rolls and soup and was fine.
Then I ate the beef, followed by a bit of the chicken.

I totally lost my shit like an hour later.  It was a major bummer,
dudes.  It might have been the raging stomach flu I was coming off
of or the shit Cher movie I was watching on television, but jesus
fucking christ on a cracker, it actually hurt coming back up.

Henry - you've failed me.  Never again.

I am so glad to finally have a good Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood! My boyfriend and I have been here a few times and the food has always been excellent. I especially recommend the chicken chow mein (hold the bean sprouts!) and appreciate how gracious the staff are whenever I spill my soup or my water.  (For some reason, I am always spilling things there. I'm young, so it's endearing, but when I'm 95 years old, it will be a troubling sign of motor function decline.)

I live in Noe Valley. I like it. I try to support business in the neighborhood. Tonight I call Henry's Hunan (or Joe and Eddie's or whatever the eff it's called) to place an order for delivery after reading on multiple websites that they do deliver. Nope, sorry, they tell me they are too busy. You either deliver or you don't, not "we deliver when we have time".
We'll see if I ever stop in to check it out in person, that kind of crap really pisses me off.
