I LOVE Hennessey's. Whenever I'm in LA, I have to make a trip at least once a week here.
The food is ok, beer prices are competitive, and It's one of the few places that carries Blue Moon beer on the west coast. "The views from the Rooftop?", you ask. Well, that's just a slice of what "my heaven" is like...
I love the beach here at Hermosa.
I love the sky, day or night, and, I love Hennessey's because of it's location.
There's just nothing else, that I have "personally" seen yet, with more stunning views to escape from the world to.
P.S. - they play great music, which is most likely programmed, and programmed pretty damn well it is!
Enjoy the scenery, the brews and the tunes! -
Review from Kylie L.
Driving through the area and feeling the hankering for a beer and something to nosh on my hubby and I stopped here because most of the other places were packed.
Bloody Mary was spicy and even though I ordered it with nicer vodka, you can get it for $4 on special... Well vodka but hey if you are younger and on a budget then go for it.
The Grilled cheese with tomato soup was actually really tasty. The soup was only so so but the grilled cheese was really really good. I would go back and order that again for sure.
The ribs were a great size if you aren't too hungry and come with. Ole slaw and French fries. The fries were really good so order those if you want a yummy side. The ribs themselves were sweet and came super hot ( temperature wise) but if you are a rib fanatic then don't order this.
The table next to us got sandwiches and that is what I will order next time.
Tons of TV's so you can see the game from wherever you are sitting.
Service was friendly and attentive. No complaints here -
Review from Maria A.
Pretty good atmosphere.
An escape from the douchey, college bro vibe you get at the other bars in the Hermosa beach promenade thing.
Good drinks-- though the waiters seem to be on something all the time.
Live band-- pretty lively crowd.
Nice rooftop terrace if you want a smoke, or some air.
Not too packed on a Saturday night. -
Review from Rob P.
Tried to go here for dinner on a Saturday night because my buddy said it was a cool spot to hang out on the patio. Buuuuuuuut it was packed, so we left. No points gained, no points lost. Will try again one day.

The rooftop patio has THE best view of Hermosa Beach!! This is my favorite place in LA to spend my Sunday afternoons sippin on mimosas w/ good company :) the food is pretty good and every night they have deals. I know Tuesdays are two for one burgers and I hear they have an amazing happy hour on Fridays. And the bartender Jimmy makes the best drinks ever!!

I was "friends" with Hennessey's on FB for updates and on Friday (1/27/12) they posted DUI checkpoints. I interrupted their posting of DUI checkpoints on a social network as giving drunks a "heads-up" of which street intersections to avoid. Anyways, the administrator of the Hennsessy's Tavern didn't see eye to eye with my comment and de-friended me after making a weak argument. HOW TACKY FOR A BAR TO POST DUI CHECK POINTS. We all know South Bay has DUI checkpoints and it's not up to bars to let us know where they are. Myself and many others feel like this is enabling drunk driving. I attached my FB conversation. One quote on quote from the administrator was "it's public domain and by law they should be disclosed." But once again, by a bar????? TACKY. Lastly, I was told "Corrie... did you go to school to be a judge.... do you judge things in your life or other regularly... I never ever drive drunk! This post discourages people to drive knowing their are checkpoints... If you change the way you look at things the things you look at change." They sure told me!

NEVER AGAIN. After 23 years of supporting Hennesseys Manhattan and Redondo I am finally saying goodbye after visiting the Hermosa store. I was there about 2 weeks ago and sat on the downstairs patio next to the strand and it reeked of Urine, some drunk person must have urinated near there the night before. And not only that, the patio needs a serious Steam Cleaning.
Anyway, I recently got in touch with an old friend from High School, and planned on getting together, he now lives about 2 hours away and I told him to come down on Tuesday for 2 for 1 Burgers, and we can sit up on the patio upstairs. so the 2 of us and my 16 month old son walk upstairs and there is only one table available, its 1:30 and thought the lunch rush would be over. We go to sit at the table and the server stops us and tells me that the table is reserved for a party of 4, I tell her that I have had 3 people sit at the very same table before and she then comes back and says no and offers to get the manager and I just said forget it, but my buddy wanted a burger and we walk downstairs and sit down. A manager then delivers our drink order and I ask him why we were not allowed to sit there and he tells me they reserve it for a party of 4, and I then ask him "what if a party of 4 never appears , we are customers that are here right now and want to sit up there and he holds his guns. I did not want to make a scene with my long lost friend here so I go with it and move on. I honestly cannot remember being turned down for not having a 4th person at a 4 top, this just reeks of pretentiousness! He was a taller manager who is nearly bald, just fyi.
But that is it, this place has become way too corporate, the vibe at the Manhattan Beach store 20 years ago is gone and this place will never be the same. The food has gone down hill and the drink prices have gone way up. I have supported you with thousands of dollars over the many years and I am not giving you one penny more. -

One of my favorite stops on the Strand. I love to sit outside on the patio and people watch.. Always some crazy peeps out there.. One of my favorite things to order is the Grilled cheese and tomato soup. I don't usually order grilled cheese sammy's when I am out, but Hennessey's makes them seriously delicious! I first tried it with one of their bloody mary's, but I wasnt too thrilled and stick with the beer. Overall, Henn's is a great little spot.

So I was a little bummed when I arrived for karaoke and they tell me they can't play my cd =( But the DJ quickly found it for me and added it to his library for me, that was AWESOME! I didn't drink, I didn't eat, but I did sing! I loved this atmosphere, there were some really good singers and although I don't make it out this way very often, I would love to visit this place again. Soon baby...very soon.

In-between three and four stars. The location is amazing, I'll give them that; the place was crowded and we weren't willing to wait to head upstairs, so we just sat out front, which was just as nice. Our first server was really friendly - I don't know what happened to her, but the gal who replaced her just seemed like she didn't want to be at work that day. Ordered a burger, and it took all of 40 minutes, but my friend and I were lucky enough to engage in conversation with the couple next to us, so time went by faster than I'd thought, though my stomach would chime in occasionally. I tried Hennessey's lemonade, and I must say, I'm a fan! Not of the fan of the price though, oy vey.
Pros: amazing view, great location, good drinks
Cons: sub-par service, a soggy burger (must've been ready 15 minutes before I got it), and a pricey menu. -
Review from Dave N.
Yay! I'm a fan.
To Yelp, thanks for letting me use your words.
Hennessey's in Hermosa (there is one in each of the Beach Cities) is the perfect spot to go out for drinks. The food is ok, but the drinks, crowd and rooftop patio is where it's at.
This is a great spot to meet guys or girls. Definitely a meat market. Also, the drinks are reasonably priced for a beach city.
Don't come here expecting some high class establishment, but this is no dive either. The bar runs all kinds of drink specials through the weekend, and they have a good selection of beers.
The real selling point of this place is that it's located on the Strand, and the closest bar to the beach, so you get amazing views, particularly if you are on the roof.
Also, they do some cool stuff for Octoberfest, believe it or not.
In a nutshell:
A nice ocean breeze, a cold beer in hand. The good life.
Yeah.
I'm coming back, many, many times over.Listed in: The South Bay

It is an Irish restaurant and bar, I liked the Irish decor, went there for lunch on Saturday, 2 of us girls were still sleepy and a little hangover, we all ordered beer for hangover cure. :P I had a large Stella, yummy!
We were told to sit wherever we like, we picked a booth, our waitress was friendly, introduced some drinks and food. I ordered calamari and Tuna wrap, bf ordered French dip sandwich, our friends ordered Buffalo wings and burger. Loved my calamari, it came with 3 sauces, very delicious, my Tuna wrap was very good too, very light, just the way I liked it. Tried a piece of friend's Buffalo wings, it was very good, crispy and tasty.
The food was a surprise for me, I really like it, usually my tongue doesn't taste things goof if I drink too much the previous night, but the food there was very tasty! Would definitely go back to eat or drink again! :)Listed in: It is a casual thing :)

My favorite stop on the pier. I prefer Hennessey's over any of the other bars. They have good beers on tap, and there food is good. I'm a fan of the Grilled Cheese & Tomato soup with a tall beer. The irish nachos also make me very happy.
The servers are usually fairly good, but occasionally you'll get the bad apple who would rather talk to her friends at the bar than see if you'd like order - but whatever, it's her tip that's in the balance.
Friday nights sometimes leads to a live band - who's been less than stellar the few times I've seen them (always the same band). -

Their Earth Wrap is SO GOOD! Turkey, cheese, sprouts, tomatoes, and PINEAPPLE wrapped in a spinach tortilla (I got mine with no mayo because mayo = disgusting). I think it was around $11? And it's big, prepare to go home very full if you eat the whole thing. Which I did.
It comes with kettle chips, also yummy. We went on a Sunday morning for brunch/lunch, the majority of the group I went with went for their omelette/pasta bar (could you pick two more random things?) that was $14.95 for AYCE. PLUS: $3 mimosas with any order during their brunch hours :)
Very loud and you kind of have to fight for seating when it's busy because you seat yourself. They have an upstairs with outdoor patio seating but sadly, it was full when we went to check. The view is awesome though.
I'd come back but I also feel like there might be hidden gems throughout Hermosa that serve better breakfast/brunch options. However, I DGAF.
I'm only giving 3 stars because although my order was delicious, there was nothing else on the menu that looked really appetizing. Even the omelette bar looked like everything had kind of been sitting there for a while. -

Great location, horrible food, but still would go there for a nice sunday brunch along the pier. I think they had unlimited Orange Juice + a bottle of Champagne close to Mothers Day! :)
I can't think of anything special about this place but .. if you happen upon to be in the area and wanted a bite or a place to sit ... that's probably the only time you will find me there! Otherwise, there are much better places to select from. -

Listen here people! I'm not from this area, but I made the trip for a good friend's birthday. She wanted to come here since it's close to her mom's, so a few of us got together Sunday to eat and have some drinks.
The food was pretty good! Standard fare.
But, it being a celebration of sorts, we had some DRANKS. The bartender (forgive me, I don't know his name... he had a mustache.) was on POINT with everything that night. And our waitress, Jeanette (who I made sure to remember) was on IT. She came around the right amount, didn't leave us hanging, was funny, and courteous. Because of these two, seriously, we had a GREAT night.
AND THE VIEW ON THE DECK = KILLER. (ask to be seated there FOR SURE.)
I may not be from the area, but when I am, I'll make sure to keep Hennessey's in mind!! -
Review from Seth B.
Redondo Beach, CA
Hennessey's is all about location, location, location. Right on the corner of the strand and pier plaza, the patio and roof top deck offer great people watching and views all around (weather permitting).
The prices are reasonable and caters to families during the day and the "kid-less" at night. The bar is amazing, offering almost anything you could want. The bloody mary's are very good if you like 'em spicy but the margueritas can be hit or miss depending on the bartender.
The food used to be good, but they recently changed the menu and I am not sure they've worked out all the kinks. I still like the tuna sandwich, but I have to ask them to make it the way they used to; toasted sourdough, no cheese, no lettuce and cold tuna. yummy.
I've been going here for years and don't think I've veer had the same waitress twice. Not that it matters, but just an interesting tidbit. -

THE BEST turkey burgers E-VER! Especially on 2 for Tuesdays. ;) Seriously love Hennessey's for their turkey burgers and Black and Tan's. Service is always pretty good. Love to people watch as I eat my food so sitting on the patio is a must. There's also an open deck on the 2nd floor. Went up there once and it was hot as hell. Normally I love the heat but I'd much prefer it from downstairs.
If you haven't tried this place yet, go on a Tuesday and at least take advantage of the 2for deal. I'm hooked! -
Review from Aaron F.
Whenever you decide to come to eat here, go upstairs on the roof. What beautiful views! Yesterday was a perfect day to eat lunch there.
Unfortunately, it was too crowded and my burger wasn't all that great. We were seated in the corner which was fine, at least we had a seat since it was packed.
I ordered the giant burger with cheese that comes with chips. My burger was quite dry and not all that enjoyable for some reason. I can't pinpoint it but it was probably the dryness of the burger, if that makes any sense. No juiciness as I generally like them.
Over the years, I usually have no issues with the place as it is an enjoyable restaurant. Something didn't work out this time.
Service was a little slow because it was so crowded on the deck. It took forever to refill my water which I desperately need since it was so hot out. -

Located out on the begining of the pier Hennessy's was a great stop in for a late lunch. Hennessey's open air roof top deck is the perfect spot, the ocean air , the warm sun , and it was Thursday so 1/2 off Martinis!
So once we had that settled, it was on to ordering lunch. I guess great minds think alike as we both ordered the corn beef slider sampler. Service was great , she was friendly, very attentive, great on recommendations ...besdies the view alone puts you at ease and into a laid back mood....or was that the dirty Martini!?!?!
The little cornbeef sliders were great, one plain, one with a sause and one a mini reuben.....served with homemade crispy thick cut fries...really good.
Maybe next time we'll time it better..........................
and watch the sunset!!!!!!!!!!!! -

Here are the eight greats to Hennessy's Tavern:
1. Great view. I love watching the ocean while eating.
2. Great people-watching.
3. Great fish and chips
4. Great beverage selection and specials
5. Easy parking- do beach parking and stroll around!
6. Easy to walk off your meal at the beach
7.
I'm out of greats Notice most of them don't really have anything to do with the restaurant itself other than location. I really enjoyed eating here, but the serving staff was kind of rude. Beach prices were expected. -

Meh. This one's ok. Good place to end your night of drinking....I don't think i'd want to be here sober because the atmosphere is something like an over-the-top frat party. Once again ... meh.
I prefer Manhattan Beach -
Review from Tory w.
The best part about this place is the view. If you were any closer to the beach, you'd be in the ocean having the waitresses swim your food out to you. So pretty - if you are here on a nice day, definitely eat on the rooftop deck.
I came for breakfast and it was pretty standard - eggs, bacon, the usual. Tasty, but nothing spectacular. The coffee was cold and tasted horrible, we had to ask for them to make a fresh pot, which they did without hesitation and without giving us the feeling that they were going to spit in it when we weren't looking. Very friendly and prompt, big portions and well priced.
I'd go back for sure. -

This is one of the few locations on Pier with patio, indoor and rooftop seating options. Grab a seat upstairs if you can - great view of the beach and Strand.
We ordered a basket of wings and a salad were pleasantly surprised to find some of the tastiest, most perfectly prepared wings in the area; crispy but not dry. The beer selection upstairs is limited to drafts but still plenty to choose from.
This will be a regular wings and beer stop on the Strand! -

3 1/2 Stars (rounded up)
The U.S. women's soccer team was playing Japan in the world cup finals, so this place was packed. Reminded me of the WWE, when an American fan favorite would be up against a foreigner playing the bad guy.
The hostess and all the servers we talked to were all great, and after grabbing a drink at the bar and waiting for a few minutes while we watched the game, a table opened up for us.
We started off with some Edamame w/ no salt and Irish Nachos.
The dipping sauce for the edamame was pretty good, and the nachos were very good.......but just as greasy as they were good.

Surprisingly chill place next to the pier. Went with a few friends to grab a drink after walking round Hermosa Beach.
I was suffering from a cold and needed some comfort food. The corned beef and cabbage hit the spot.
The bar staff were really friendly which in a tourist resort like Hermosa isn't always the case.
So if you are looking for a more mellow, down to earth bar then give this place a try. -

My family and I ate here while on vacation in the area about a month ago. We were here on a Monday evening around dinnertime and it was quite full. We snagged the last table on the roof deck and enjoyed our meals (I'm pretty sure all of us ate burgers) while taking in the ocean view. That was quite excellent, definitely the highlight of the meal!
There wasn't anything wrong with the service or the food, both were fine (but also nothing to write home about). The biggest drawbacks for us were the cramped feeling of the upper deck (no room to move around or even to push chairs back from the table) and the volume of some of the patrons of the restaurant. Overall a good (but not great) experience. -
Review from Emily S.
This place is good because of it's outdoor second floor patio. You get a great view of the ocean and the strand.
Other than that, the place is alright. It's all the way at the end of the pier, so not as many people come here.
Also, the crowd here is usually a little bit older. Old as in people in their 40s. But those are the funnest crowds.
Music here is a little too loud. But if you're up on the second floor, then you don't hear it.
Nice place to come to. Food is average. -

My last visit to Hennessy's was great. I went for happy hour right after work on a weekday. We sat up top of course. The waitress was very friendly and got our drinks quickly. I ordered the french dip, which was pretty good. We also ordered some onion rings to share. The rings were freakin great! You can't beat the view from Hennessy's on a sunny day. The atmosphere is very relaxing and casual.
Hennessey's has done a great job fixing the menu. I like the homemade chips a lot better than those crappy bag chips they had before. I don't like that you still have to order fries or rings separately. But at least now you can substitute the chips for cole slaw.
My fiance always get the Hennessey's lemonaide. I didn't try it but he swears by it. He gets it every time. I ordered just the HH cabernet and it wasn't bad.
Good job with the upgraded menu Hennessy's and the waitresses were all really nice! -
Review from Ashlee J.
Good place to go w/ a group of friends. I like that there is an upstairs outdoor patio as well as one downstairs at the entrance. There is plenty of inside seating as well.
We got a mini keg for $20 (7 full glasses of amber ale). What a bargain! We enjoyed relaxing, talking & people watching (lots of interesting characters). We came on a Saturday night & heard some live music, which added to the whole experience. During the day Hennesseys offers a great view of the ocean. We didn't eat the food, but it looked like your regular greasy spoon pub fare. -

5 stars for the halibut fish and chips, 3 stars for the service.
Seriously you guys, halibut fish and chips. This is the best plate of it I've ever had and I will go back again for it, along with some Guinness. It's $15 which seems steep for a plate of fried food, but when you consider the fact that it's not bland fried cod, I'd say it's worth it. Even the cole slaw is good, which to me is usually just a runny object used to add some life to a beige colored food ensemble.
It's a seat yourself kind of place which is fine, but service took a good 5-10 minutes to get to our table and it wasn't nearly as crowded as I've seen it before. Our waitress was very nice though and the food came out in a timely manner.
Just go for the halibut fish and chips. -

Came here since we were looking for a place to eat in Hermosa at 11 o'clock on a Friday night. Had the special grilled cheese and tomato soup which was well worth the $10 price tag. Beer was cheap for the area and location was great. Nice cover band that was into the crowd. Plenty of TVs as well.

Review from Jen G.
New York, NY
Ok look, let's cut the shit and get to the point here: the reason you go to Hennessey's is not for the upscale atmosphere or high class drinks. No, you go b/c it's a sunny, gorgeous SoCal day and you wanna sit on their rooftop right by the beach and get fall-down drunk while people watching. For a simple girl like myself, this warrants a five-star rating from me.
Like I said, few things beat scoping out the passerby's on the Strand while you nurse a vodka lemonade from Hennessey's. And trust me, those things will.fuck.you.UP. Ok, well maybe that's b/c I get the double vodka lemonades (I'm fun that way), but really why wouldn't you? I mean if you're gonna end up drinking 3 or 4 of them, it's such a waste of empty calories and sugar if you think about it, so why not be more efficient and just opt for a double? Exactly, now you're thinking along my line of reasoning. What I like to do is have 3-4 or those double VL's, then walk down the Strand all the up to Mucho's in Manhattan Beach. This takes about 30-40 min of walking time depending on how badly you're stumbling and zig saging along the walk path, but it'll either sober you up a little, or just make you that much more hammered. Either way, you're walking so it's all good! No one ever got a WUI, unless you were being rowdy of course ;) Who, me? NOOOOOOO.
Anyways, once at Mucho's, I recommend hitting their $6 happy hour for apps, and ordering the passion fruit margarita (blended, not on the rocks). Said passion fruit margarita is sadly not on the happy hour menu, but TRUST ME ON THIS ONE PEOPLE, it's really friggen good and you won't regret paying full price for it. It's one of my favorite drinks in the world.
At this point you're probably well on your way to a very decent buzz, if not fall down drunk. So I opt for catching a cab back to Hermosa (if that's where your car is parked), or hoofing it back there while drinking copious amounts of water to bring yourself back to earth.
Repeat. Enjoy. :) -

A good pub. I like their burgers. The prices are reasonable.
A very nice roof deck and service is good.
