Review from Elena I.
San Francisco, CA
I had my wedding cake and several party cakes done by Helena Wirth over the years. In fact, I haven't even bothered with anyone else because I always love the experience. Her cakes are dee-lish, they're beautifully done and the service is great. (It does not matter to me if the shop is not ultra lux... my party guests don't care either when they're enjoying the cake!). I highly recommend Helena Wirth!
I'm baffled by the bad reviews. I suppose sometimes things go wrong, as with any business, but I can't even imagine problems not being rectified immediately. I've always received professional attention and service here. -

Ok so with all the up and down reviews I wanted to give it to you straight -- as I always do --
Aesthetics:
Not the most modern -- think old school bakery feel with the cake models and decor yet no freshly baked goods for you to buy(individual stuff)..
I got there at closing friday and I didn't realize it until I was at home looking over something..Anyways Miss M was sweet and accomodating.
Tasting: Yes unlike another bakery in Manhattan beach that did not offer a cake tasting for a birthday cake Helena did without an appt.
8 count'em EIGHT different kinds of fillings and I think 4-5 different cakes.
Again if you want to buy from a place that is updated in decor and not based on the quality, then this is not the place for you..
Selection of designs: SOoooo many and they will combine features, and custom design one from a pic..
Now the Cake:-- Picture this: Plate is on the table fork in hand picture album in the other - Your attention is on the book not the cake -- fork in the first cake -- then in mouth -- OMG!! what is this --- Stopped everything to look at the cake you just ate "Damn that is GOOOD!" Next bite -- DAMMMNNN that is good!! -- SO Good you want to eat all of the cakes right then and there...(BTW PINK CHAMPAGNE FIRST CAKE, PINA COLADA SECOND)
Anyway -- I will post the picture so you can see my daughters cake -- And the reaction I had was the same reaction the guest at her party had -- I CHOSE PINA COLADA AND STRAWBERRY.
It was sooo good and even the party coordinator adored the look and taste she kept asking where did I get it...
You Rock Helena Wirth!! Next big LA even I have and I need a cake you know Im knocking on your door...Comment from Anne Marie A. of Helena Wirth Cakes 9/17/2011

Another year and another beautiful and delicious cake from Helena Wirth! In addition to the friendly service ( they even sent me home from my tasting with some cakes to nibble on! Thanks for that! ), they made a very special cake for my daughter! Exactly what she asked for! Again I highly recommend the chocolate, and the pink champagne, BUT I tried a few new flavors that were pretty fantastic too! Green tea, tiramisu, lemon, to name a few! AND after a few years to bugging, it appears that a GUAVA flavor is in the works as well! LOVE!!! Thanks again for another masterpiece! We love you guys!

I called to use our groupon for a dozen cupcakes on a Friday afternoon (they ask for 48 hours advance notice) and was so happy they were open on Sunday. I asked for chocolate and chocolate, and not only were the cupcakes delicious, but they decorated the board they came on with an icing "Happy Birthday" (and the recipient's name.) A very nice touch. Now that we've had the basic, we'll be back for some of the more exotic flavors. Note: the gentleman on the phone was extremely warm and helpful.

I had an excellent experience at Helena Wirth Cakes.
I ordered my wedding cake there, for over 200 people and I got a great price for it. It was about 2.50 a person, with fresh raspberries inside, fondant, and the cake decorator matched my invitation design to a T.
Also they worked with me long distance, I was living in WA at the time, and they made my cake perfect, delicious, fresh, and just breath taking.
I even managed to go to a tasting after i had selected my cake, and all of their options are just moist and delicious!
Don't get fooled by the reviews. -

Do not go here. the experience you get at the bakery is like no other; its terrible. Its not a clean location by no means, theres no selection theres three different types of cakes and they are so called the best...NOT!! DO NOT GO HERE ITS A WASTE OF TIME!! Get your wedding cake some where else. UGH
REVISED:
I didnt want to go into detail because frankly I didnt want to waste my time for a location that I do not care for, however since you had the time to respond to me I will be so kind as to respond to your comments.
First of all I find it even more disipointing that you have a selection of seven different cakes...they only gave us three to taste, maybe your consultant needs to be sure they present the customer with all of your options. Secondly just because you're in Sherman Oaks doesn't mean anything. Your location is dusty, with numerous lights out, just missing some TLC, and it is also dated. My experience at other business' has been that how a location is kept is a reflection of service; this may not always be true however, 9/10 it is (i.e. attention to detail). Lastly, I would also suggest that your staff not comment on personal options relating to anything outside the realm of cakes; as you're consultant did. It was completely unprofessional and unacceptable behavior. Hope this is a little more helpful.Comment from Anne Marie A. of Helena Wirth Cakes 6/28/2010

Okay, so about a year ago, we got our wedding cake here. It was the Pink Champagne cake and the Lemon cake. Amazing. It was full of flavor and very moist. All of our guests raved about the cake and I think they even sneaked a few slices in to their pockets and purses. And, I might mention the cake freezes incredibly well. One year later to the day it still was moist and tasty.
So, you may ask why am I giving them 2 stars. Well, about 2 weeks ago, betting that the frozen cake would taste like frozen peas and baking soda, I ordered a 7 inch round Pink Champagne cake. Imagine my surprise when I came to the store to pick up my cake at 5:30 pm on the dot on the designated date only to find that they forgot to make the cake.
Thank goodness they didn't mess up and forget the wedding cake. Any way, don't know if I can trust them not to screw up again. So I'll be on the look out for a better bakery.
Sorry Helena, your tasty treats don't make up for your forgetfulness. You saved us the calories, but left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Service: okay. not bad, not great.
Cake: the cakes were horrible! they were worse than any costco/vons/ralph's cake i've tasted. the "buttercream" icing was hard and it cracked off when i put my fork into it. the red velvet especially was dry and flavorless.Listed in: Wedding Cake Bakeries

Ooooh, wedding cake testing is the BEST! !
Overall our experience at Helena Wirth was great... the bakery looks a little old and their storefront could stand some updating, but more importantly, the service was great & our wedding cake was beautiful AND delicious! We got the Pink Champagne (raspberry and vanilla mousse) and Marvelous Marble (chocolate & white cake swirl). Both tasted great, and there was perfect icing to cake ratio - sweet, but not the kind that makes you horribly guilt ridden after you eat it. Wonderful! -

The experience you get at the bakery is like no other. First off, the bakery is ran purely by the family. The time dedicated to helping you the right cake is never rushed. There is a gallery in the bakery which had all the newest styles of wedding and birthday cakes. The detail and design is elaborate and unique, truly one of a kind. The owner never ceases to make the customer happy. Though the cake flavors are traditional, the owner also bakes other desserts on the side such as a decadent carrot cake, cheesecake as well as scrumptious melt-in-your-mouth CUPCAKES. What is wonderful about this bakery is that everything is freshly made to order and there are several options to choose from. They are flexible with designs and patiently assist you in designing your dream cake.
point blank.
if you want great service, a delicious cake then this place is a MUST. -

Helena Wirth Cakes is where my sister had her 18th bday cake done. Big and beautiful cake that was a true piece of art. It was red velvet (her fave as well as mine) and made with fondant, another favorite of ours. I probably went back and ate 3 more pieces of this cakey goodness. The design was well done and showcased the theme of my sister's debut and her passion: singing.
If you look at the pictures posted, my sister's cake was the one with the huge musical note. =)Listed in: Sweet Tooth Heaven

Not a fan, will not go back! I was excited to see and taste my cake that my wife was going to surprise me with BUT when I looked the first thing I saw was incorrect spelling from what they were told and shown. The taste was horrible like some of the other reviews confirm on yelp. I also was not at all impressed by the look of the cake, my 2 yo daughter could have done a better job.

Don't get fooled by the pictures!!! The design might look nice but the place where they make them is kinda of gross, outdated and the list can continue.
I wanted to order a custom birthday cake for my son 1st birthday. First, I called and asked if I could come in and discussed about it. They agreed and I've set up an appointment.
Let me tell you, the moment I've stepped out the car I just had a bad feeling about it. The street where they are located is kinda of gross. But I didn't want to listen to my first instincts (which they usually don't lie) so I've continued my experience.
Got in the store or bakery. There's no display whatsoever of their fresh products. There are these giants molds of cakes in all shapes and colors that are so cheesy and tasteless not to mention a horrible tall wall that separates the so called waiting area from the bakery. Who knows what they are doing back there. Ding!!! Another sign to just leave. But I kept going. This guy, I'm assuming the owner comes and we start talking. I show him my version of the cake, he says he can do it, takes my whole address, like it was a done deal, then tells me the price. Remember it's a cake for 20 pers. $375. I'm like: "What???" My son is only turning one . Then, he starts explaining me how parents are spending enormous amounts of money on 1st Birthday cakes and that the cake that I've wanted needed I don't how many mini cakes to be made of....whatever, I've said, It's too expensive and I don't really care how much other parents are paying, I KNOW how much I want to pay and this is not the right amount. So, after that conversion, still in good faith, I wanted to work out a deal with him. So, I've started changing the design: what if you only do this or that, etc...for no avail, it looked like it was impossible to get a cake under $275 in that "awesome bakery".
So, I left, very happy there was no order and very decided not to go there for the rest of my life.Comment from Anne Marie A. of Helena Wirth Cakes 5/28/2011

I ordered a birthday cake for my fiancé with his high school prom picture on top. It turned out gorgeous, delicious and hilarious! Who could ask for anything more? How about the fact they offer a discount for KCRW members?

Over-priced and pedestrian for what you get. Hansens cakes is also over-priced, but at least you are happy with what you get. We ordered a duck-shaped cake for a baby shower, with gender-neutral tones because the couple does not know the baby's sex. What we got was a strange looking duck - many people had to sit and look at it for awhile before recognizing what animal it was; also it was completely decorated with blue for a boy. The cake was also surprisingly tall; I thought, great, more cake! When the cake was cut, the yellow duck frosting was honestly one-inch thick, and the filling (we ordered the pink champagne cake with cream and raspberry filling) was another inch thick! The cake part was actually quite minimal! I did not order in person which may have been part of the problem, but just ordered by looking at a picture online; the person taking the phone order was quite rushed, and there could have been a language barrier. The quarter-sheet size cake we ordered for 20 people was $90 but in the month of march they have a special for 20% off; so even $76 was too much to pay for this ugly and overly-sugary cake. Hansens had quoted me $104 - should not have been cheap-ass and I regret not paying it now.
