Me guesta!

Hector's has pretty standard, tasty mexican dishes.  The prices are reasonable and the staff was friendly and helpful.

I went during lunch and the place was about half full.  I had enchiladas and they hit the spot.  They might not be memorable but they were still delicious.

It's worth a try in my opinion and they came close to getting four stars from me.

I understand the compulsion to overrate this place based on the lack of solid Mexican fare, in Milwaukee.  But, it's really nothing special.

The bar's alright.  Especially if they know you.  They have a decent (generic) selection of tequilas; and'll make you a solid margarita.  Which is nice.

The dining area is cramped, and sees a lot of family traffic.   I've sat here, drinking/eating; and it isn't very relaxing.

The food is decent.  Chips and salsa/quac is slightly better than average.  The rest of the menu is Americanized Mexican.  Tacos, quesadillas, burritos, fajitas, etc.  They at least ATTEMPT a mole.  I've tried it.  Nothing special.

It's all edible; but nothing to blow you away.  Great for takeout, when you need to fill the hole.

We sat outside on a beautiful summer evening, sipping great margaritas and arnold palmers.  All four of us at the table each could have ordered one of five or six entrees because they all sounded so great. I ordered the Rubios, lightly fried mahi mahi and cabbage tortillos, excellent. Others ordered cerviche tosados, barbacoa tortillos, and a beautiful pollo salad.

We really enjoyed ourselves and would certainly recommend it to others.

Overhyped! Ate the most bland enchiladas verdes I've ever encountered - no heat or spice at all. The decor is what could be best described as "suburban basement bar chic" - mismatched tables, bad industrial carpeting, ugly bar area (and smokey!), lots of neon. It could be mentioned that the food came out quickly, but I'm not quite sure if marginal-to-bad-food quickly is a plus...

I really enjoyed the Puerco Adobo, although the fish tacos didn't go over so well.  Make sure to ask for the chipotle salsa, much better than the regular stuff they give you...

No matter when you go, the wait is terrible, the service is awful and the food is just as bad. The margaritas are usually watered down even when you ask for a double. It is usually so crowded and loud it is difficult to carry on a normal conversation at your table. The patio is a decent place to have a drink, but then you have to be careful of the swarming/stinging insects. I have tried Hectors on numerous occasions both with my husband, girlfriends, and business associates. I have come at different days and times. No luck. Also, the smoke is bothersome with the noise level (and I smoke). If you do go, try the patio during the summer or go during one of their outdoor festivals. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

I'm usually here for lunch because -
a.  I love Mexican food and could eat it every meal...  and
b.  It's super close to my work

It does a fine job of settling my Mexican craving.  The salsa's a good chunky mix of well seasoned goodness.  The enchiladas and pretty good and they have an amazing variety of them, it's just they are so slathered in cheese you are bound to go back to work with a tummy ache and in a food coma.  I stick w/the taco salad which is quite filling but nothing real special.  What confuses me is that the salsa that comes w/the salad is different from the salsa that comes with the chips.  It's like an odd jar picante.

If your in the area and need a Mexican fix, this will do!  Dinner has a bigger menu than lunch w/more adventurous options with an equal amount of tummy filling grease.

Parking is crazy...  the lot in back is very small and difficult to manuever.  Parking in front is difficult w/the traffic on State Street, so it's best to turn down a little side road to park in order to get in and out easy, although I'm sure the neighbors are not too thrilled.

Hector's is a hole in the wall, very shabby, just a bar with a back room in which to to chow.  The floor was downright scuzzy when we went, though it was near closing time.
However, there's a very eclectic little Tex-mex  menu here, and good vegetarian options.   I ordered under "Hector's Favorites" on the menu and I suggest anyone else do the same and you should be pleased.  Stay away from the eggplant dishes as they are flavorless and mushy.  The artichoke enchiladas were a better choice for vegetarians.  There is a yummy marinated pork dish, PUERCO EN ADOBO, that the waitress suggested for us meat eaters... outstanding and very filling.  Great use of garlic here. Don't bother with the sides of Spanish rice and beans.  They are typically boring and dry.  Go ala carte whenever possible.

The good thing about Hector's was that the food was actually quite impressive. I've been to Habanero's as well, and I think of the two, Hector's has the better Mexican food. The bad thing about Hector's is that it is not smoke free, it's dark and cramped inside the restaurant, and the fact that the picture of "Hector" on the sign looks like Jesus kind of freaks me out. I would go back for take out, or if it became smoke free.

I was introduced to this place by my brother-in-law and his wife, who are regulars. It includes a somewhat smokey bar in front, as well as secluded dining area in back and street-side dining out front. Their extensive menu includes items rarely seen elsewhere (like my favorite, Calabacitas), and if you ask for the habanero salsa you're definitely getting some tastey fire to go with your chips. Prices are very reasonable, and there's no need to change venues if you decide that the conversation has gotten too interesting not to have an after-dinner drink.

Update: As of 7/1/2006, Tosa's public places are now smoke-free... I've been back to Hector's since then, and if anything, it's gotten better. We even decided to eat in the front bar area rather than wait for a table (beware of the cracks in the upholstery of the bar stools, though) and were able to enjoy the view of the park-like setting across the road.

Hectors has great Mexican food but wish it was non smoking.  I love their tacos but can't stand the smell of smoke mixed in with my chips.  Outside patio is fun and a nice neighborhood place - if only smoke free as it was for awhile.
