Man, this is the kind of place that makes me completely disregard future consequences and eat irresponsibly. Not only is the barbecue delicious, but the prices are very budget friendly as well.
For example, I love their $5 turkey drumstick. It comes slathered in bbq sauce, on top of toast, and with fries and coleslaw that were admittedly meh, but I didn't come here for either of those anyways. Oh Hecky's, please open up a location near downtown.Comment from Hecky P. of Hecky's Barbecue 12/9/2011

Why does this place smell light burnt Bologna? The food is scary bad! Could not finish the ribs. It is not good!
Compared to Gates, Arthur Bryant's, Rendezvous, Whole Hog, etc... Hecky's is fodder.
I think Hecky knows exactly what he is doing, he is appealing to the BBQ ignorant. There is NO GOOD BBQ tradition in Chicago, a few good places are popping up, but they have a long way to go.Comment from Hecky P. of Hecky's Barbecue 12/5/2011

Some people just don't know great BBQ. I've had it in Memphis, KC, E. and W. Carolina and Texas. Hecky's ranks, baby. How strange that a city as soulful as Chicago has people who think the Twin Anchors is "the best." It's a BBQ abomination to anyone who KNOWS BBQ. This is how it's done down South! The sauce, well if you like Carolina or dry rub, just order it on the side. I personally love it. It's KC style, tomato based, sweet and vinegary with a good kick, especially the hot. My favorite is the tips but for many they're too gnarly; but a great cholesterol picker-upper! lol The spareribs are my other suggestion. And I love the red beans and rice, very NoLa style.. A hint of gumbo file', home made, it's great. Forget about the phone service. Who cares., it's carry out. I find them pleasant most of the time anyway, and when they're abrupt it's because they're running all over, packing orders, making sure they are right. The phone isn't for chit-chat. Just cook 'em, sauce 'em and bag 'em, I'm there in 20!
ps. I competed in Q-contests, some very large well-know ones, for 10 years as well, and I ranked! Call it extra credentials besides my palate. ;)Comment from Hecky P. of Hecky's Barbecue 11/22/2011

Flavorful sauce and pulled pork. Had ta pulled pork sandwich and it was good, moist, but it wasn't fresh and neither was their rice /beans which I must say were not great. But one pf the few real BBQ joints around- would recommend making a stop.

These guys are hands down one of the best BBQ places in town! Not to be missed. M*A*S*H* once did an episode on Chicago rib joints & referenced a place called Adam's Ribs down by the Dearborn Station (probably fictional). As far as I'm concerned Hecky's IS that place!
Thank you Hecky's for the sauce (yes, it's as good as it gets), the ribs, the smoked wings (MMMMMM, good), and particularly for the wonderful employees who work so hard to give us good food!Comment from Hecky P. of Hecky's Barbecue 1/2/2012

Groupon called my dude, and he answered with a certificate to Hecky's.
I noticed a few days ago that it was set to expire next week and found myself in Evanston this afternoon. BBQ was clearly meant to be tonight.
I tried ordering online for pickup and it was a big pain. Ended up aborting that mission and just called it in.
The staff was borderline surly and unpleasant. That's fine. I don't get takeout hoping to make some friends.
My eyes were significantly bigger than my stomach this evening. For just my dude and I, I ordered the rib tips and hot links combo, a full slab of ribs, mac and cheese and red beans and rice.
I got home and we kicked some BBQ ass.
Everything was really good. Very good. I think I liked the rib tips and hot links the best and I'll most likely order just that next time.
The one disappointment? The sides were just kinda ok. The mac and cheese was better than the red beans and rice. My biggest complaint about the beans was that it needed significantly more rice. It was more like a bean soup.
Even without a Groupon, we'll be back! -

Hecky's baby back ribs are tender and meaty, and he's right: "It's the sauce!" The tangy sweet sauce is just the right consistency to coat the ribs, and there's enough to use as a dipping sauce for the fries. Although there are many kinds of BBQ sauce out there, Hecky's sauce is a perfect fit for my tastes.
Some time ago, I tried the rib tips, which were just as tasty as the ribs, but as you'd expect, they had more fat and bone.
The counter staff are always polite and helpful, and you can sit in the window while they're preparing your order. Parking along Golf/Emerson Road has never been a problem.
If you like ribs, I'd definitely recommend Hecky's -

I grew up in Evanston so Hecky's BBQ was something my family knew well. I haven't been in years, so when I finally made the drive from the city I was very excited.
The baby back ribs are some of the best I've ever had. Tender, yet firm ribs that are basted in their amazingly delish signature sauce. A must get for any Hecky's diner.
As for the rest of our dishes, I was not impressed. We also got a pulled beef sandwich that was mediocre at best. They couldn't tell me if it was pulled brisket or not (not a good sign) and it was just boring. Their cole slaw, while tasty, was mushy and their baked beans tasted like canned pork-n-beans.
If you're going to come to Hecky's, do yourself a favor and get what they do best - RIBS! You won't be disappointed! -

Chicago, IL
I normally get nervous when a place I love as much as Hecky's starts tinkering with its menu, but their recent changes have been knocking it out of the park. The fried chicken has traditionally been fine-- maybe a notch below the nearby Chicken Shack-- but the new recipe is unbelievably fantastic and blows every chicken place in Evanston out of the water. It's even good without the sauce (blasphemy, I know).
The second addition is a selection of sausage sandwiches: chaurice (kind of a milder chorizo with a firmer texture), andouille, chicken, and brat. I've never liked the links much, and since they're just $2 apiece I figured they'd be tiny, but these sandwiches are gigantic and absolutely incredible: go for the chaurice with sauce and you'll be thinking about going back for more the rest of the week.
For the traditionalists, though: go with the ribs. The tips are fatty (but whose aren't?) and not much cheaper than the half-slab, and you'll be much happier with the latter. And when you order, always ask if they have the smoked wings: they're the best around but are only available irregularly and usually sell out during lunch unless you're lucky. Most of the sides are pretty average (skip the corn), but the jambalaya is great during the winter. -

Should you need a buzz saw to separate ribs? Ribs were anything but tender. Sauce was fine but the sides were disgusting. Greens came right out of a can and the "gumbo" was some fatty beef concoction. Overall nasty.

This was a tough review to write and I am posting it in the hope that Hecky's will figure out a better way. I ordered some BBQ chicken and a slab of ribs on New Years Eve for the teens that were staying home that night. It came quickly and the food was OK but the bill for this rather underwhelming single bag of food (including a modest tip for the driver) was right about FORTY DOLLARS! Two hours later I was dining like a queen at a fabulous restaurant in the city for the same amount of money - silly comparison, but a way of pointing out how greedy Hecky's has gotten. The "slab" of ribs fed one teen boy - that's all - and cost 22.00 with tip. The chicken was overcooked and was not even close to being a 'half a chicken'. I don't think I am gonna order from here again.

Got BB Ribs full slab, fries, coleslaw with the Hot BBQ
Ribs were just ok, the sauce was pretty overpowering. Fries were decent, coleslaw was eh... I remember this being better in high school. Twin Anchor's in old town sets the standard for me, so these weren't even close. -
Review from Nancy H.
This is not a sit-down restaurant. It is strictly carry-out. You must call in or place an order online on their website.
We ordered the half slab, Original Mutt (rib tips, hot links, 2 chicken wings, and fries), and jambalaya for $24. I don't think there was anything I really enjoyed, although I was happy about the chicken wings. They were good sized, and the skin was really plain looking but flavorful. The ribs and rib tips were hit or miss. Some of the meat was tender, some was tough/dry/chewy. The sauce was almost too overwhelming in tang. The hot links were pretty spicy but nothing amazing about them. The crinkle fries were very boring. The jambalaya was too wet. For all the Yelp hype, Hecky's truly disappointed. -

I'm a big fan of BBQ and in particular, some good ol' ribs. And Hecky's is the real deal. Legit. Let me start with what I usually get if I'm not getting ribs--the Original Mutt plate. You get some rib tips which as many have mentioned are just fabulous. Some hot links which are also very, very good. Two pieces of chicken wings, which I think are pretty underrated--they were some of the best fried chicken I've had, frankly. And finally some fries which will be dripped in their absolutely, mind-boggling, delicious sauce. That's obviously one of the main components of good BBQ and Hecky's has perfected their sauce. Just awesome.
Onto their ribs. There are about 3-5 BBQ joints in the Chicagoland that makes some very, very good ribs, in my opinion. Well, this is one of 'em for sure. If you're not feeling the Original Mutt combo or one of their great sandwiches (pulled pork especially) then get a slab of ribs and go to town on them. While you certainly may (emphasis on may) find meatier/better ribs, you won't find a better combo of that and an awesome sauce like you will at Hecky's.
Everything here is to go (or delivery) since there is really no where to sit inside. Order ahead and go pick it up in 30 minutes and you will not be disappointed. -

To start my bunch of BBQ reviews, I'll start with Hecky's. I've ordered carry-out a bunch of times here and their sauce is the ish. That means it's really damn good for those who don't know. The staff is very friendly and quite hilarious. Here's my recommendation for a perfect afternoon on the couch.
-Order a pulled pork sammich, extra sauce, french fries, and mac & cheese.
-Share with someone (but preferably someone with a small appetite so there's more for you).
-Pick up food and return to couch with a fresh DVD of Arrested Development queued up.
-Divide up food, douse fries in sauce, and go to town.
-Marvel at the delicious goodies you just inhaled and don't move for between 1-4 hours.Listed in: BBQ Heaven

Ribs were very good, although not the meatiest I've had. Good smoke/seasoning. I enjoyed the sweet/spicy, thick sauce.
Pulled pork sandwich was good, not excellent.
Mashed potatoes tasted like imitation potato flakes, mac and cheese was ok; I probably won't bother with sides next time.
Overall, I'd say ribs are your best bet when ordering here! -

Ribs.....VERY GOOD! This is what Hecky's does best IMHO. Genuine smoker on the premise that you can view and see and smell. The sauce is ok, I am used to more pepper in BBQ sauce, this is sweet.
The links are not good though, very very dry. Maybe I got a bad link, but it was awful. The side are good and really hail from the SE US. Cornbread rocks and the rice'n' red beans was great!

It's been a while since I've been there so I'm combined my experiences and the most recent posts. They seem to match up. Hecky's is a no frills BBQ place. Not pretty, no style points but very good BBQ.
I'm a HUGE rib tip guy. I make them myself but to do them properly, it takes time. Hecky's does a VERY good rib tip so if you don't mind a little effort (in eating). The hot links do pack some heat and plenty of flavor. That right there is a meal in itself. Ribs are top tier and that goes without saying. As for the sides, the mac & cheese, slaw, & red beans & rice were very solid. One thing I liked about Hecky's is the wide selection of BBQ you have. The sauce is quite tasty as well. If you're in Evanston, this is a good place to grabs some BBQ & take home.Listed in: C.A.T's (Chicago Area…, Into the Pit

After a few years of living in Evanston and many times of passing through the intersection of Green Bay and Golf, I finally got around to checking out Hecky's. I met a couple of friends - two walked, one biked and I took my car - note only street parking if you drive. We planned to get our food to go (I think you can only get take out or delivery), and went to a picnic bench by the not-incredibly-far beach.
A friend recommended the mac and cheese with BBQ pork. I was so sad they were out of mac and cheese! I just got the sandwich and fries. Fries were really good, actually. Other friends got the chicken bits, which tasted really good. It was all a little pricey, in my opinion. (Is ten dollars a lot?) I went back today and got the mac and cheese and snack pack rib tips and it was about $10. Now, here on yelp, I see there is a coupon for $2 off $10, so do that if you're already on here! Anyway, mac and cheese wasn't amazing. I love it at the nearby locale, Merle's. The Hecky's sauce was pretty great. Smokey flavor. Rib tips came with bread to soak up the sauce... which reminds me of Chicken Shack down the street. I don't think Hecky's wins my vote for best BBQ in Etown, but they don't lie. Sauce is good. -

Ok, so maybe I'm missing something...Hecky's claims "it's all about the sauce", but the sauce is mediocre at best. Based on all the glowing reviews, I feel llke i should give it one more shot. But then again, when you make such a bold claim, shouldn't the sauce be great the first time around? I will say, the catfish sandwich was pretty fab, but that's about it...,so far,

I went here with a Groupon. My girlfriend and I ordered a slab of baby back ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, french fries, baked beans, mac and cheese, red beans and rice, and peach cobler.
The only thing that was decent were the ribs and french fries, but nothing to write home about. The pulled pork sandwich was a little dry. The baked beans did not have a lot of beans and consisted mostly of liquid. The mac and cheese tasted microwaved and pasty while being hot on the outside and luke-warm in the middle. The red beans and rice side was very similiar to soup with the consistency that it exhibited. I don't really care to slurp my rice and beans down if you know what I mean. Here's the kicker though, the peach cobler was no better. I thought cobbler was suppose to resemble something that more closely looked like pie. This was not even close. It looked like snot served in a bowl. I kid you not, it looked like crusty pieces of matter floating around in egg whites. I don't get why this place serves some of the sides that it does. A lot of them really aren't edible and vaguely represent what you would expect to get anywhere else. Not much else can be said about this place. -

Delivery order:
+ Original Mutt Combo (Hot Links, Rip Tips, Chicken Wings, Fries)
+ Pulled Pork Sandwich
+ BBQ Turkey Drumstick
+ Mac & Cheese
+ Corn Muffin
+ Potato Salad
+ Mutt Muffin (Corn muffin filled with greens. Jaw drop. I know, right?)
+ Corn on the Cob (Ordered it, didn't get it, but also didn't get charged for it. Still... I really wanted corn on the cob. I was sad.)
8 years in Evanston and I hadn't had Hecky's yet. I've driven past it hundreds of times, heard rumors about the sauce, and yesterday decided it was time to try it.
So here's the deal, the food was good. The sauce is delicious and their rib tips are fabulous. The seasoned crinkle fries are a great accompaniment to the BBQ. Had I gone to a restaurant and ordered this stuff, I might be raving.
BUT
2 hour delivery is UNACCEPTABLE. There is no reason for a $3.50 delivery charge. There is no reason for the restaurant not to call when the order has taken more than an hour. Absolutely ridiculous. Are you really THAT busy? I called the restaurant after waiting an hour. I was told that my order wasn't there, so it must be out for delivery. I live a 5 minute drive away from Hecky's. When the delivery guy gets to the door TWO hours later (and an hour after the food had supposedly gone out), he said that he drove over immediately. So, somebody is lying.
I was so annoyed but also so hungry. Then I found out that they missed my corn and got all quiet and calm (this is scary and not remotely good).
Perhaps I will try it again (take out, never making the delivery mistake again). Frankly, I'd rather drive all the way to Pilsen for Honky Tonk. I'd be eating sooner anyway. So, try the rib tips if you're going to be picking up from the store, but DO NOT GET DELIVERY. -

I grew up on Hecky's (the Evanston location) and love it. I have had every damn thing on the menu and have never been let down. I swear to you, I could go in and just lick the damn counter and walls and be happy. Oh, the smoke! The delicious delicious smoke!
(That all said, the Hecky's in Chicago on North Halsted was a disgrace to the Hecky's name!!! No cooking or smoking happened there.. just reheating. It was all trucked over in styrofoam... just disgraceful...) -

maybe a 3.5 experience.
went there for lunch carry out today. pulled beef sammy and greens side.
the food was good, though the meat was absolutely smothered and dripping in sauce. i like sauce but that was almost too much.
the place is indeed expensive. $10 for the above! most bbq joints i have gone to you pay $5-7 for a sammy and 1-2 sides. -

I laughed out loud reading some of the previous reviews for Hecky's... how can there be complaints about the BBQ being too saucy, or the meat "drowning" in sauce, when the restaurant's clearly stated motto is "IT'S THE SAUCE" ?!?!? I don't think Hecky could have made this point any clearer, haha.
5 stars for the pulled beef sandwiches (my absolute favorite), the fries, and oh yes of course...THE SAUCE!Listed in: To the 'burbs!

Review from Ken N.
Venice, CA
We met Hecky! He was a rock star at our opening night party!
We'd been driving from Evanston to Skokie to the Northlight Theatre six days a week, and on the corner of Emerson and Green Bay, we'd see a barbecue joint with a big butcher paper sign in the window: "OBAMA MUTT IS HERE". Every morning, we'd ask, "I wonder what an "Obama Mutt" is?" and one day, after a long couple of weeks of rehearsal, we found out:
An Obama Mutt is basically their sampler plate with some of the best rib tips, BBQ chicken, hot links, and fries, all smothered in their signature smokey sauce. You walk in, and you are almost instantly imbued with barbecue (I was sniffing my winter jacket for a couple of days afterwards and getting hungry) smoke, and their friendly staff will wait patiently as you look, awestruck, at their big menu board. Some of us got the Obama Mutt, the Obama Super Mutt, the Chicago special (rib tips and hot links), a half rack of baby back ribs, and a half rack of just regular ol' ribs, with a variety of sides, including some black beans and rice, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens to go along with the Wonder Bread slice designed to help soak up some of that barbecue sauce off your fingers.
Mmm!
A normally loud, talkative, and opinionated bunch of theatre artists got real quiet as we went straight from food ecstasy to food coma.
We were over the moon when we found out that both Hecky and Koi were going to host our opening night party (Po Boy Tango has both Chinese and African American food at the heart of it) - and when we met the iconic Hecky with his gold Hecky pendant, we mobbed him for pictures.
Dang, why didn't I think to ask for his autograph? -
Review from Keiko S.
Apparently they're famous for their barbeque sauce, which is sweet and tasty, but stil...isn't this place a little overrated? We recently got some sandwiches - chicken and turkey - and they were both tasty, but not superb. I guess I personally had issues with the sauce dripping everywhere and soaking up the bread.
Or maybe it was the wait. We ordered well in advance before leaving to pick up the food, but regardless, we stood there waiting for over 30 minutes. I might as well buy their sauce online and make it at home. -
Review from natashka o.

Since, as everyone knows, Natashka is not moved by human rights or baseball, I did not go here because Mister Hecky supports little leage and all manner of philanthropic goal. I went here to satisfy my Carniverous Appetites. And I can report that Hecky's satisfies more than some men ever will.
I am suspicious of any yelper with name like "Kake" to judge barbeque sauce (see below review of Hecky). Kake was name of my first teddy bear. Let me just say I would travel from the Winter Palace all the way to Evanston for Hecky's Barbeque sauce. Luckily, weather is similar in both locations so I do not have to change my hat on the way. -

Cambridge, MA
It's a total neighborhood joint for any Evanston boy; Hecky is a nice man who's done a lot of good stuff for the community, so it's doubly nice that his restaurant kicks four kinds of butt.
Good barbecue -- the sauce is well above average. Purists scoff at BBQ drowned in sauce but it works here, especially since the meat isn't really all that amazing.
But the fried chicken -- my god in wine-dark heaven, the fried chicken. Soooooo good. (Sooooooo incredibly bad for you, too, but let's not go there.) Seriously, if you're burned out on fried chicken because you think it's all Popeye's and KFC, check this stuff out. -
Review from Erika G.
Oh goddess . . . RIB NIRVANA. Just the smell of this gets my taste buds goin' all Pavlovian. "It's the Sauce", and it's totally true, this place is the real deal. WORTH the drive to Evanston, and I dare you not to bust open the box on the way home to sample just a bit. I've been going there for years, and have always gotten the Rib Tip Dinner just 'cos I am so in love with it, but I'm sure anything they make is going to be supremely delicious. These are RIBS, baby, can I give it more than 5 stars? GO!!
And you know a rib place is oldskool when they give you that inexplicable slice of white bread (to wipe your fingers? lick them!!) and cole slaw. The slaw is yummy too! -

Really not that great compared to the competition in town. But I have found to each there own when it comes to BBQ and Hecky's has a following.
Do not care for their sauce. Everything is drowned in it.
It was a sad day in Evanston when he was sited for the smoke that he put out. He had to stop that and it hasn't smelled as good as it did in the ol' days
