12 reviews for Healthy Wok
Went because of the Yelp reviews. If it weren't for the positive reviews, I would have bolted right away. The floor is dirty and there are piles of random junk all over the place - even on some of the tables.
However, I put aside my nervousness about what sloppiness might be occurring in back, and gave it a shot.
It was decent. Surprisingly on par with most average chinese restaurants. Very cheap for lunch specials.
My co-workers and I ordered from here for lunch. I got the lunch special Chicken Lo Mein- which apparently is the same thing as chicken chow mein in case, like me, you didn't know. It came with fried or steamed rice and an egg roll. It was delivered within minutes!
The portion was huge for lunch- enough to share or have 2 meals.
For 3 lunch specials it came to $19 and change.
My favorite part was the fortune cookie have a lesson in speaking chinese! Fong Bein means conveinience!
Ode to the Healthy Wok, how do I miss thee...let me count the ways.
This place was one of my regular lunch spots for the 6.5 years that I worked in Sherman Oaks. I love this Chinese place! I recently went back a few months ago with my GF, and the waiters still remembered me and my usual order...I left LA in 2005! Now, thats some good waiter service/memory!
Anyways, on to the food. I've tried almost everything on the menu, and I have to say that some are better than the others. If you've eaten here you probably already know that there's not much difference in their orange chicken v. the sweet and sour chicken (besides a few bell peppers). Either way the chicken is always cooked perfectly. Try the General Tso's chicken and always ask for extra spicy, I like my food with a little kick. The fried rice...well isn't really fried, so don't bother with that, the steamed rice is always cooked fresh, none of that yellow dry rice that you may get at other Chinese joints.
As I said earlier this place has a soft spot in my heart, the wait staff may not always be the most communicative people, but hey you're going to eat not talk. I've never in my 6.5 years ever had a bad experience here, and as long as I'm in San Diego, I will always be searching for a place like Healthy Wok!
They have a lot of light and low fat dishes... very good.
My mom and I have been going here for years.
Their Shrimp Chow Mein is delicious! Lunch specials are as low as $5.35 and Early Bird Dinners are as low as $7.30.
I also recommend the Shrimp Fried Rice, Shrimp with Cashew Nuts, and Buddha's Feast (a tasty veggie dish!)
Go HERE! You won't be sorry.
And the service is very friendly.
Geez, I'm forgetting something... Oh YEAH!
YUM YUM YUM in my TUM TUM TUM!!!
It's been my experience that most Americanized Chinese delivery in this town isn't all that healthy and that's okay with me. Sometime you need a little evil in your diet to keep you sane. Not saying you need the MSG, but a little extra, shall we say, cushioning, never hurt anyone...too badly.
That is where Healthy Wok comes in. They are a bit healthier than some of the places I've been in the fact that they use really fresh ingredients and cook with 100% cholesterol-free canola oil, so even when it tastes a little greasy, at least you know you aren't totally blowing it.
As for what to order...
I love their combo chow fun, egg drop soup, hot & sour soup, wonton soup and the shrimp in lobster sauce. All are super tasty and totally affordable.
What's also great about this place is their half orders. With these you can try more things instead of ordering a dish that will sit in your fridge for days. Oh and the food also comes in great containers that are cool to hang onto for various leftovers.
So yeah, give em a try, it's good stuff and apparently, not too bad for ya. Also, I've never been to their actual restaurant, I only order delivery, but I've had no complaints whatsoever. They are super quick and super cool :)
My experience with Healthy Wok has always been a pleasure. The food is simple and tasty and doesn't make me feel sick like many other Chinese restaurants. The waiters are nice and pay attention to their customers and prices are very affordable. Highly recommended if you want to have a nice quiet dinner :)
The food is average but fresh. The dining room is not a place to impress anyone.
However, for quick, cheerful service and value, this gets my vote.
I go here with friends on a budget. I usually order a lunch deal and freeze half in a takeout box for later.
OK, all I seem to write about are asian restaurants, what's up with that!
Heathy Wok, went there for lunch form work one day and I do have to say that this isn't your typical Asian food.
I had the Orange Flavored Chicken, egg-drop soup, won-tons, egg rolls and Fried Rice.
Now, after a meal like that at any other Asian restaurant, I'd be ABSOLUTELY STUFFED and the oils would have made me feel fat and nasty.
Healthy Wok... NOPE, NONE of that! I can honestly say that I have never felt less stuffed after eating a LOT of asian food.
The rice, though lacking all the goodies like peas, meat, carrots , etc... (it had egg in it) was VERY light and fluffy and I could not find any discernable oils in it or left in the bowl afterwrds. Typically, fried rice is loaded with oils.
The egg rolls were tasty as hell, the egg-drop was a pretty standard egg-drop and was good, I always add pepper. The won-tons were yummy.
The bill wasn't that expensive at all, it only cost me about $13 for all of that and I felt like I hadn't eaten but yet I wasn't hungry anymore.
Perfect!
The only thing is that it's a small place which resembles a diner, not an Asian restaurant, so it's not really a date place unless you just want good food and don't want to feel stuffed afterwards because you may be going to the beach or home to have sex.
Yeah, I'm a bit blunt! Love it or leave it.
6 Mar 07:
i have to admit that i would never have come to this place on my own prerogative. why? not really wanting to sound snobby (but hey why not?). the main reason is that i'm chinese and i've dined at some of the best and worst authentic and non-authentic chinese food places. i'm not a fan of the whole americanized chinese food experience (i cringe when i hear things like orange chicken, sweet & sour, or chow mein - that is, if it isn't followed by hong kong style). if i ever really wanted that, i'd just as soon go to panda express.
caveat #2, i wasn't feeling the best and so my state of being may also affect this review, so i gave the place the benefit of the doubt.
i came here to meet up with a friend for lunch. since i wasn't feeling all that hot, i decided to have some soup, their won ton soup. the broth was okay, the veggies were good, but the won tons were just very eh. little to no meat in them, the meat was overflavored with sauce (soy?) instead of the natural pork flavoring coming through. the service was nice and brisk.
i'm giving this place 3 stars because of the nice folks working there. they were very attentive. otherwise, unless prompted by someone else, i'm not inclined to revisit.
While hanging at a friends place this weekend we ordered delivery from Healthy Wok and I must say I walked away impressed (and full). The menu made it clear beforehand that all their items are cooked without the overuse of oils many of us are use to with typical "Chinese food." And what they delivered was exactly that. Price and quantity of the food were great. Check out the lo mien, it was easily the best thing I tried. They did not have any pork fried rice though. What? Are you serious? How can you not have pork fried rice?? The combo rice (shrimp, beef and chicken) was a great substitution in the end. Orange chicken is one of my all-time faves, but for whatever reason I wasn't that impressed.
I've been going to Healthy Wok, on and off for years.
At some point in the last two years, things have changed, somewhat for the worse. The food isn't as good as it used to be. I'm not quite sure why.
For example, their sesame chicken, at one point was the best around, now is in a light fried batter which is almost soggy and bland. Same goes for anything they have in that batter. (ex: orange chicken)
Additionally, I've always been troubled by their board of health "B" rating that they've had for a while now. If you know anything about the restaurant grades, a "B" rating by Dept. of Health standards, is not exactly a ringing endorsement, nevermind Cs or worse.
The good about the place is that they do have some other decent dishes, but so do most Chinese places worth a damn. If you can't do a basic "chicken and broccoli," that's a huge problem. They can, but I wish this place would revert back to how it was in before 2005, when the food was much better.
I have dined at Healthy Wok a few times, and found the food to be hit or miss. They advertise that they cook without excess oil or MSG, and that is certainly true. Some Chinese dishes lend themselves to this treatment, and some don't. My Kung Pao chicken was awful. My wife had Sweet and Sour chicken which was quite good. Luckily, they portions were generous, so we mostly ate hers. I was really tempted to mix a couple tablespoons of sesame oil into mine and throw it on the stove for a couple minutes. Definitely only worthwhile for takeout or delivery. Service is blazing fast and prices are reasonable ($8-12 per entree).
