Exactly what you want from a hardware store -- customer service. Now, I myself am handy, but I know that most people are not. This is why mom and pop style stores are the best.
It's a small store, but there's plenty of selection for the most customer needs, whether it's hand tools or plumbing. The customer service is great. Unlike Home Depot, where you have to literally hunt someone down to get a key copied, there is someone always available at Ace.
Save yourself the trouble of spending too more time finding an employee or someone to help you and go down to Ace. -

I was in need a screw today. Not any screw but a specific screw. Not a long screw or a short screw, just an in-between screw.
I came here to find the screw I needed. It was perfect. The screw satisfied all of my needs.
At the end I got a nut to top off the screw.
True story. -

I love the fact that this place is near the post office, library, and grocery store. Everything you need in one fell swoop.
Ace Hardware is a small shop that carries all the nuts and bolts that you're probably looking for. It's not as big as a Home Depot but it really shouldn't be when you're just looking for a something small.
One added star because I was asked twice if I needed help. -

Any Ace hardware is a respectable place. Many of these are mom & pop operations who joined in with this franchise at one time or another.
The people who work there are always expected to keep a mom & pop store environment. This is helpful as thy carry a lot of items that you can't ordinarily find at the big chains. The exception is OSH though.
This particular location is convenient. You do pay the price for convenience and for their helpfulness.
They have a minimum for opening a line of credit there. That is kind of inconvenient.
As far as the level of helpfulness though, it's hit or miss.
Take for instance this past Saturday the 7th of July. The people who staffed the store that day were not very helpful at all.
I watched as two separate customers got upset with a cashier. The alternate was lazy.
As a result, some of us who were in line ended up driving to Home Depot.
I hope they read this and take this observation constructively. -

Mom and pop status. These guys usually know what they're talking about rather than the random people they hire at home depot who will just point you in the right direction.

awesome!~!!!! they are the best for customer service and soooooo knowledgable with pretty much anything. Also they are honest when they dont know about a particular brand. seriously gotta come here

If you're ever in need of a bippity-bop a thinga ma-jig or even the aloof whatcha ma call it! These guys have parts that the big box stores don't have! Save your gas come back to Ace!

I had to make 300 copies across the street at Copy Mat. Crossed with the light, no one in line, a quick copy of my key and I'm out the door. Back before my 300 copies are finished. Great service.

Ace Hardware in downtown Hayward has been here since lord knows how long. Thankfully spared from destruction when the general area was redevelped, it has everything one would expect from a major hardware store. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and are more than happy to take the time to assist you and answer any questions. Save yourself the drive to a Home Depot or Lowe's and spend your penny at this excellent local establishment.
