Hayes Cleaners is one of the things that my husband and I will miss most about this neighborhood now that we are moving.
I have a question: since when is whether a dry cleaner speaks perfect English relevant to the question of dry cleaning itself? I am really surprised at how some people seem to resent the fact that perfect English is not spoken here and that your dry cleaner (not your insurance broker, your financial consultant, your primary care doctor or customer service for a major company) is not great on the phone.
The lovely couple who work here always chat with my husband and I when we drop things off. We enjoy learning more about their son and China. I am sure they don't understand everything we say and we don't understand everything they say, but we get by nonetheless. It is always a pleasant encounter and I feel like we are just as much their acquaintances as customers.
I have had several (probably more than 10) things altered here. I love trying on my outfit and getting pinned up because it reminds me of when I was little and my mom would sew all my clothes. "Stand still!" my mom would say. The owner's concentration reminds me exactly of my mother minus the scolding.
Oh yea, a word of advice--- always trust this woman's judgment about length, etc. I have a few times contradicted her on the length of pants (she tends toward the long) and she is ALWAYS right. I inevitably shrink the pants or they are just a bit too short with nice shoes. Her instincts are right on.
We have dry cleaned everything here in the last three years and I have felt like the prices were good, the turn around is as quick as you need it, and they have never ruined a piece of clothing. Then again, despite being a serious clutz, I don't seem to have the James-Bondian-esque stains that some people seem to demand a dry cleaner fix.
My husband and I are among the south-side-of-the-Panhandle people who cross over to give our business to this husband-and-wife team. They are just super nice, sweet people and always have our stuff clean in a timely fashion. We only use them for dry cleaning and minor alternations, so I can't speak to the wash-and-fold service. They know us and always know which stuff is ours, even without the claim ticket. When I got pregnant, they were so happy for us, and after the baby was born, they even made a cute little hooded cape for her.
When we first started going there, I brought all of our silk drapes to them to be cleaned because we had just moved into our condo and they were left by the old owners. She warned me that the drapes were fragile and would possibly tear during cleaning and even called me after test-cleaning the first set to remind me. One drape did tear but the others were fine, and she did not charge me for the torn one, even though I had her clean them knowing it was a possibility.
i went here for years--they are very sweet and accommodating, and always did a good job.
then they ruined a top of mine that had leather tassels (they vanished)--and they still wanted me to pay for the cleaning!
i tried them again perhaps a year later, giving them a very delicate silk top and asking whether it would make it through OK. after some back and forth where i thought i'd made it clear that if it wasn't safe to clean it, i didn't want it cleaned, they took it, and when it came back it was completely demolished. i was extremely upset and have not gone back since. very sad, as it's sooo close to my apartment.
since then i've been going to the dry cleaner in cole valley instead, but am contemplating trying the other one near my apartment (hayes between clayton and cole).
My first impressions of this place were not great, but happily they got better.
Having investigated Wash and Fold places on Yelp following my experience at the previous laundry place that broke my heart, I settled on Hayes Cleaners due to the proximity to my flat.
I rang up and the phone is answered like:
Hayes Cleaners: *sigh* HELLO? (Like it is really annoying that his phone was ringing.
Sandie S: Uh...............is this Hayes Cleaners?
Hayes Cleaners: Yes? (sound unsure...this makes me flustered and unsure in return)
Sandie S: This is Hayes Cleaners?
HC: Yes (sounds more sure about it now)
Sandie S: Oh...uh.....do you do wash and fold?
HC: Yes
Sandie S: Are you open today?
HC: (silent)
Sandie S: ARE YOU OPEN NOW?
HC: Yes.
Sandie S: Um....what time do you close?
HC (silent)
Sandie S: Hello?
HC: Hello.
Sandie S: What time do you close?
HC: 7.
Sandie S.: Ok...er...thanks...bye
HC: (silent)
Sandie S. BYE?
HC :(hangs up)
So off I head to Hayes Cleaners and am pleased to hear that it is 85 cents a pound, whereas the last place I went to was $1.15.
It turns out my 19 pounds of laundry here were cheaper than my 14 pounds at the last place I went to. My big, cheap, flimsy comforter from Target cost $7 to wash though. The woman tried to give it to me for a cheaper cost by after a rapid discussion with her husband in either Cantonese or Mandarin, the price went up up up.
I think I just need to find time to do my own laundry, getting laundry done is way too expensive.
The laundry came back cleaned, nothing was ruined, everything was ironed, and the man carried by stuff out to my illegally double parked car. The people there have pretty good English in person (not so much over the phone) and are fairly nice and do a pretty good job on the laundry. Not bad. I know it is more expensive than doing it myself so I really should try and find time to do my own laundry......
I am pleased with my experience. The lady has been nice. They have been very helpful.
I have them do the fluff and fold. I get my clothes in and they come out clean and folded. It's only $5 more for 2 weeks of laundry vs. coin laundry. Totally worth it for me.
My finace had them dry clean $100 worth of pants... yes he has that many pairs... and the next time I went in she gave me 2 fully stamped out cards with 2 free dry cleanings to give him. She said he was talking so much she forgot to give them to him... which I can totally understand. ;)
When I was in college, I considered the husband and wife team to be like family. They were so nice, efficient, and they put so much attention into my clothes.
When I lived in the Inner Richmond, I was lazy. I didn't have a washer/dryer in my apartment or even my building, so my laundry would just pile up. Then, I started using Hayes Valley Cleaners. They did all of my wash/fold, as well as my dry cleaning.
Also, they delivered for free to me because they knew I didn't have access to a car at that point in my life. If I lived even a little bit closer, I would still use them. I suggest them with the highest rating.
I love this place, I mean really, love.. They are located right down the block from me, which is extremely convenient. At first I started bringing my dry cleaning here. They always do a fantastic job and are always so fast. The lady who runs it with her husband is so funny, she always asks where I'm going to wear all these clothes to, and every time I reply, "oh, to a party I guess?" She probably thinks I'm either a.) an alcoholic, because I'm always bringing my party dresses here and that's always the response I give, or b.) a party animal who has no life. Either way- I'm OK with it.
So recently I started bringing my laundry here for wash and fold, after my roommate talked me into it since our washer and dryer broke. I love how quick they get my laundry done!! I'm obsessed, because now this means, no more waiting next to the weird homeless man in the laundry mat, no more searching for quarters or struggling to find change, no more wrinkled clothes because I'm too lazy to fold it all and put it back in my closet right away. Also, BIG BONUS, because if you mention that you're a student they'll give you either a student discount or a free dry-cleaning coupon!
Reasons this place is great:
1. It's right across the street from my house.
2. Their prices are pretty cheap, and they have a frequent shopper card that isn't impossible to fill up.
3. The couple that run the place smile constantly and tell me I look too young to have a job. They smile so much, and are so friendly that even if they didn't actually wash my clothes (say, just put them in plastic bags and hung them up), I would still take my clothes there just to chat with them for a little while.
4. They don't ridicule me for being messy and staining my clothes.
Just moved into the area. Have been to other dry cleaners, but Hayes takes the #1 spot.
I've never been treated so well by any dry cleaners ever. The guy (don't know his name, kinda rude, huh?) is always so nice and helpful. He remembered my name the second time I went in there. He has even seen me getting off the bus after work and has had my shirts ready for me when I walked into the store, now that is what you call SERVICE!
I also do the wash and fold for some of my laundry, pretty much my day to day stuff. I think the $.85 per pound is reasonable. I never have to pay too much, usually under ten bucks for a good amount of clothing.
I recommend using Hayes Cleaners!
As of today, $0.85 per pound of wash and fold.
Lady on the phone didn't speak English very well and sounded frantic. The kind of frantic that if she'd accidentally dialed 911, they would have sent a few cop cars around.
It's close to the house, even if the phone etiquette is not so good. Kind of reminds me of my parents now that I think about it. Whenever I don't speak loud enough in to the phone, my mother responds by shouting twice as loud, "HEWWO??"
I hate to pick on a small shop like this, but dude...I've just had too many bad experiences.
1. Lost a shirt with wash and fold
2. Poor hem job on jeans (left too much of the original hem...it ends up rolling up a lot)
3. Wash and fold clothes don't smell fresh...either their not using very much detergent or the loads are too big
They are cheap...and timely. But in the meantime I'll go to Sunshine cleaners.
Overall, my experience at Hayes Cleaners was a good one. My clothes were as clean as when I bought them. I did get a hint of an attitude from the lady behind the counter, but she was nice enough. 4 out of 5.
My second home! The people who run this shop are like my adoptive parents. They are always so nice and more than accommodating to all of their customers. They even hand delivered my carpet that I had cleaned and offered to help me rearrange my furniture in my room.
If you want quality customer service and people who will go the extra mile, Hayes Cleaners is the place!
These guys are fantastic! They knew who my husband and I were after going there twice. I always lose my claim ticket, and sometimes when i'm dropping off, i can't even remember if i have stuff to pick up. They always remember if i have stuff there, and they give us a 10% discount just for being regular customers (and we bring a ton of stuff to them), on top of their already low prices. And they are the friendliest people ever.
The one bad thing about these guys is their alterations - I had rips on the bottom of two pairs of pants and they did a horrible job mending them. They just ran a sewing machine back and forth across the tear and used blue thread on black pants.
I love these guys so much though for their dry cleaning and laundering services, i just consider it lesson learned and don't take alterations/mending there anymore.
They're so nice to me here! The lady always comments on my clothes, both what I'm wearing and what I'm dropping off for dry cleaning. "Oh, you like Bebe! Oh, I have that Banana Republic skirt! Is that Coach?" I can only speak for the dry cleaning service since I do my own laundry. I dropped off a white skirt that had turned red after falling off a motorbike into the dust in Vietnam. (Long story). They called me right after I dropped it off to let me know the situation could be dire. However, the skirt is now back to pure white!!! Best of all, I've finally earned my one piece of dry cleaning FREE from my little yellow punch card.
What a joy laundry is now! Stephen and his wife are cheery, sweet, and great. If you ever need anything altered, they're the best. And, at only 75 cents per pound of laundry, they're the best deal around. I've lost one pair of yoga pants, but am willing to overlook that because everything else is wonderful!
These people are really nice and seem to do a good job. I know several people who walk over here from the Haight Ashbury side of Panhandle because of some unpleasant or less than perfect experiences at other cleaners.
They are bad news. The lady started screaming crazy at me when I asked her how my shirt got damaged. I let them do sewing work. I will NEVER go back there. They are RUDE and VERY NASTY people. I hope they go out of business.
This is the best dry cleaners in SF...you could be having the worst day, but as soon as you walk in the door the owners' friendliness, sense of urgency and outstanding customer service will change your entire day. I will never go to my (local) exorbitantly priced Cole Valley cleaners again!
I walk extra far to go here (and pass several other wash and folds on the way) because Stephen is extremely kind, and is as much a neighbor as a shopowner. He introduced himself with a handshake when I first came in, and had my clothes ready as promised--all clean and nicely folded. The next time I came in, Stephen recognized me--even though I'd been t here only once before. I was just about to fill out the drop-off form when Stephen noticed my bus outside and asked if it was mine; it was, and he told me to catch it, never mind about the blank form! The neighborhood is lucky to have Hayes Cleaners.
Okay, they can be a tad bit slow. But what can you say they're overwhelmed by the super wealthy who want their wares cleaned with a quickness. Anyways. Love the couple they remind me of Angel's parents. Weird right? So, I can't deny them busy. Seriously they are on point with my stuff.
Pleasant attitude of the lady who runs it. She's great and makes me feel welcome. Inexpensive and efficient.
i took caroline's advice and checked this place out. boy am i glad. they rock! the lady behind the counter remembers me every time and is always happy to see me even when she is tired or is having a bad day. all my clean clothes come back folded nice and neat. even the other customers seem happy and talkative. it's like one big happy laundry family!
this place is THE BEST. really. the couple that run the place are super nice, and as mentioned, they'll remember you even when running into you on the street. they also do pretty darn good alterations, too.
