5 reviews for Hayashi Ya
Back in my high school days, I used to walk past this place and be creeped out because it was so small and dark from outside. It being under the B and Q train station also added to my reluctance.
One day I ordered from them because a friend recommended it. Though I had trouble understanding the lady on the phone, it was fine at the end. The food was surprisingly good. The prices are great.
Their combination sets and party platters are pretty awesome also.
I go here several times a week for lunch. You can get a decent Japanese meal for a shade over $5. Read that over again. Where else can you do that in New York, nay, the world? The owners are definitely Chinese, but they know how to make shack-style Japanese food. They even have Japanese curry, oyako-don, soba and ramen, which many sushi places fail to keep on their menus. Though there is maybe one seat in the place, this is not the type of place you eat in anyway. You can also order online and pick it up when it's ready, instead of waiting in the 5'x5' waiting area. I like.
There used to be an adorable little round-faced Chinese girl that worked the cash register. She was so friendly and cute that I wanted to hide her in my closet. Now she's not there and I refuse to eat here until she's back.
Anyway, a 16 ounce container of miso soup for...
(drum roll)
$2.50!!!!!!
Noodle soups and rice platters = $6-7!
64 piece Party platters = $29!
oh baby.
With nary a true Japanese in sight in this part of Brooklyn, I overrode my gastrointernational instincts and ordered sushi from Hayashi Ya sight-unseen, fully cognizant of the fact that it was most likely a Chinese kitchen in disguise, and resigning myself to the expectation of being delivered some uncoooked distant relative of a General Tso's chicken. When a platter packed choc full o' tasty fresh sushi arrived (albeit lacking some if the presentation skills of a true Japanese joint), I was shocked, relieved, then overjoyed as wasabi-induces tears flowed. All this without realizing at the time that the actual shop is a hole-in-the-wall directly underneath the elevated subway.... Unfortunately, it all tasted better when I didn't know that. These days I travel away from the subway to find real Japanese.
This is an under-subway outpost of the Manhattan chain. You might roil from the idea of eating raw fish from under public transport, but I can't eat at the Burger King down the street anymore.
So, for $10ish, I got a dece porsh of karaage (Japantucky Fried Chicken), rice, salad, and a big enough spicy salmon roll. It took a minute or two, but I don't mind for sake of freshness.
3 rolls for $6.75. Yatta!
They have some killer deals (10 rolls for $25) and assorted curry and noodle dishes (cold only), so if you have to be near the Q/B in Midwood, this place is worth stopping.
