Italian Beef Crawl Stop #1: Hawkeye's.
I've been going to Hawkeye's over the years and was glad to hear this would be the first stop on Italian Beef Crawl 2011. We loaded up the school bus and headed off to Hawkeye's, a Taylor Street mainstay and the buckets of beer came rolling in. Taking up almost every seat in the dining room, we all watched college football and waited in anticipation of the first beef.
There was nary a seat to be had and anyone not beef crawling in the room must have thought us a pack of hooligans. Fortunately for us, we far outnumbered everyone else. It was really kind of the bar to let us use their place to buy drinks and eat our own food and the server was attentive given the high number of people we brought along.
There were lots of TVs and everyone was out checking out college football. There is a lot of class to the dining room and the bar will fill with UIC peeps on the weekend nights. Drinks are cheap and the TVs are plentiful at Hawkeye's - go check it out! -
Review from KELLIE K.
Being the Iowa girl that I am, I suppose I expected "Hawkeye" to mean Iowa Hawkeyes. I saw nothing that resembled Iowa Hawkeye fanfare, and certainly no black and gold.* The decor was loaded with hockey themes and Blackhawks fan stuff.
The food is OK. Just OK. I had the Caribbean grilled salmon with mango salsa, grilled veggies, and wild rice. Sounds kinda good, right? Wrong. The salmon, while cooked very nicely, was incredibly small. I mean beyond regular portion small. The veggies resembled more like something left over the grill a bit too long. I don't count an abundance of onions as veggies. I'm an onion fan, I just don't want THAT many of them. The wild rice was a fancier version of Rice-A-Roni.
The plus is that the service was alright and the owner is friendly. Their beer selection is limited.
Do yourself a favor if stop in: stick to the burgers/sandwiches or bar food, because that's what it seems like they do best.
Overall, Hawkeye's was disappointing, for sure. The folks that drug me here are losing points for bad recommendations as of late. I won't rush back here anytime soon on my own.
*No stars were lost for lack of a Herky or black and gold. In fact, they may play Iowa games and just weren't on the night I was there. Go Hawks.Listed in: Run Run Run Run Runaway

Hawkeye's is a faux-Irish bar that's really a sports bar, and it's not good at either. It's tacky and garishly decorated. This effect is compounded by their bouncers checking ID's in ill-fitting shirts and ties while the waitstaff and bartenders -- women only; of course -- are dressed in tight denim, little sweatshirts, low cut tops and the like.
There are two sides to the location on the first floor. One side is a long room made narrow from the large, double sided bar. Tables surround the perimeter and a small elevated location in the rear. The other side is a dining room, which I have never entered. Bathrooms and a smaller bar are downstairs and in summer there is a patio open outside. There are televisions everywhere ringing the bar, yet sight-lines are difficult no matter where you sit. It's a strange combination.
Service ranges from simply uncaring to actively poor from the waitresses. Bartenders, on the other hand, are nice and pleasant.
Food is good, but nothing exciting -- basic bar food with a few extras present on the menu. It's high in price but of good quality and large portions.
The problem is the drinks. The shot specials are $4.75? Jack Daniels cocktails when on special are $6.00? Those are some not-so-special-specials. On top of that, this is the only bar in the city I've been to that uses an electronic pour control system. It comes off as cheap, as does the bar fruit kept in paper containers with no covers on top of the bar. I had the pleasure of watching a bartender and waitress fix white russians using half & half from those little plastic single-servings you get at a diner. An old-fashioned was made from fruit muddled with a coffee packet of sugar, bitters, a pour of bourbon and then topped off with lemon-lime soda. You may be better off just sticking to beer.
All in all, overpriced and poor quality. If you want to watch a UFC bout or college game of some kind, this may be a good place to go if you're in the neighborhood. Anything else, I would go elsewhere. -

Best buffalo chicken sandwich ever! We came on a Blackhawks night so it was pretty busy, but the food was well worth the wait!

I can't comment on the quality of the food, as I didn't have any, but everyone else at the table ordered one of the specials of the day that was dollar burgers, according to the waitress they were "about the same size as the normal burger, but a little smaller" (?!? most confusing description ever!), regardless people seemed to enjoy them and they definitely did not look small. As for the beers, ignore the draft list on the menu because (1) it doesn't have anything good, and (2) it's wrong, I enjoyed a New Belgium Seasonal (even served in the appropriate tulip glass) and everyone else shared a pitcher of Dogfish Head. Make sure to scope the taps out on the way in if you want something besides the standard large production breweries.

So this place, needs an upgrade... on their food
BURGER: Pretty good for bar food, but with everything around the area u can find a burger for cheaper and tastier
FRIES: I am a fry fanatic, THESE FRIES=NO GO, get the taters
MASH POTATOES and MAC n CHEESE: didn't try em, but by the expression on my friend's face and her reaction, "taste like cafeteria food and cardboard" GROSS
price=need to be lower for that kinda food, 10 dollar burgers, i would rather make the trip to KUMAS, sorry.. -

Decent bar. Good service and specials. But the food is only so so. The burger is good bug the salads leave something to be desired. Had the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was just drenched in the sauce. I couldn't taste anything else.

I've been going to Hawkeyes for years, first while in college and now that I live in the neighborhood. My intuition would be to give in 2 stars, but I keep going back so it must be alright.
The food is pretty decent. I would say nothing spectacular that you couldn't find better elsewhere. As another reviewer noted, the steak sandwich is pretty good and is generally my "go to" item. Other than that, the items I've experienced can be considered fairly typical bar food.
The service is horrible. I don't like going places where servers make you feel like you should be thanking them for helping you. I won't say it's been my experience EVERYTIME, but more often than not, the service is sub-par.
I ordered a couple round of shots while bar-hopping on Taylor (3 dollar Jameson shots) and was surprised that my total was 6.75 "after tax". Kinda lame in my opinion, I'd prefer it's just built in to the cost.
If you are in the neighborhood, I'd say check it out; just don't expect anything spectacular. -

$7 pitchers of coors light, and $1 burgers on Tuesday nights. The food is nothing to write home about, but for $1... you can get a meal.

The food is pretty good at reasonable prices. I'd recommend the steak sandwich. Their service on the other hand is TERRIBLE.
The first time, thought it was a fluke. The waitress hardly ever checked on us and instead stood talking to coworkers. She took so long to check if we needed another round that my boyfriend ended up going to the bar to order our next drink.
The second time the server was nice, but brought us DIRTY plates for our appetizer! (By the way-I do NOT recommend the onion strings.)
The third time we waited at least 10 minutes at the "Please Wait to Be Seated" sign. Upon no one greeting, we walked outside to sit at one of the several empty tables. The server argued that "the host" is supposed to seat us as if we weren't clear of the process She was RUDE, made no eye contact, did not introduce herself, did not ask appropriate questions to pertain to what we ordered, and had a bad attitude. To top it off, she "hid" on the side of the building (in our CLEAR view) texting and wasting time.
Again, the food is decent but the service is HORRIBLE thus I gave 3 stars based on the food. If I had to rate on customer service alone, they would only be getting 1, MAYBE 1 1/2 stars. -

Hawkeye's seems to be our go to place before the Bulls and Blackhawks games and it never seems to fail. Its also a good place to go on non game days too.
The food is always good, reasonable and $1 burgers on Tuesdays is always a decent deal. Oh and free parking! Huge Bonus!
The bartenders are nice and the service is decent. I like to get there early because I hate sitting downstairs. But if you do get stuck downstairs, you're closer to the bathrooms. Just sayin...its has an advantage.
None the less, its become part of our pregame ritual. -

Strange waitress, crazy expensive mixed drinks and bland food. $6 pitchers of Lite, though.

I've worked in the service industry a mere 13 years - so I think I can comfortably say that when a business is run terribly - I have some experience backing my judgment. I have a friend who works at Hawkeye's and the stories I hear of this place make me want to NEVER walk into this place to make a purchase, hence keep this establishment running their business another day.
Managers treat the staff terribly, they punish you if you take time off, you're not allowed to call off work when you're sick (regardless of the flu, concussions, or any other condition). Mind you - I REFUSE to ever go back to a place that makes people work when they have the flu. HELLO?! You're in the service industry - serving people while you have the flu is a huge HUGE risk!
There is nothing done for crowd control. The Monday "Charity" nights are a joke. For those who don't know - they consider it charity night because the monday-night patrons don't tip because it's $.25 Wing nights - there's no compensation for the servers for running their butts off for a crowd that is less than appreciative of their hard work. Any qualified establishment should make a point to write on the bill what the original bill SHOULD have been, and to please tip accordingly.
I would tell anybody that if you have a hankering for wings and good beer, find another place who treats their employees like humans and not slaves. -

Last minute quick lunch on a Saturday consisted of the 'Hawkeyes burger' made vegetarian (came w/ fries) and the meatloaf/mashed potatoes plate. Both dishes super bland and came to us at room temperature.
Only redeeming quality about this place was the early 90's music which brought memories from my highschool years. One last thing--there was a really strange sewage smell emulating from the downstairs area that was coming up into the bar area. -
Review from Hoang L.
The main UIC bar back in 2003-2005. I seriously have no idea why anyone would go here for their wings. They got the sorriest wings ever. The crowd? Well, UIC drunks. You might be into that type of thing.
Might have given Hawkeye's 3 stars 7 years ago, but this place is not fun after college. I have class now. Plus, I like eating good food. -
Review from Carol K.
Stopped in the other night for a cold beer, and a friendly crowd and I got both!
Hawkeye's was hopping. The bar was packed, the patio was full and we didn't want to sit at a table so some nice people at the bar rearranged themselves so that we could sit down together. Nice.
We ordered our beers and sat sipping them. The manager came over and welcomed us to the bar. Another nice touch. And the bartender was on her game grabbing us beers when we needed them and quick with a funny quip or two.
And the people? Real as real can be. There was one couple from out of town, a couple of guys from the neighborhood and the manager of another place down the street who recognized me and came over to say hi. And this was on a Friday night! I thought it would be overrun with students but it wasn't.
We didn't eat (having just come from dinner across the street) but the food that the guys next to me were eating looked pretty good. Huge nachos dripping with cheese and a burger with all the toppings.
If sports is your thing- there are plenty of TV's for you to watch it on. And the ambiance in this place is pure neighborhood bar.
We left happier than we went in. And isn't that just what you want from a neighborhood bar? -

I am giving this place one star ONLY because the bartender was an absolute b*****h
She never asked us once how we were doing, and we were sitting in front of her the entire time..
we came down for italian fest.
hawkeyes has always been our go to place to watch the games and just hang out and have some drinks..
the food was GROSS that night just like our experience.
the chicken tenders were dry and the batter is not good.
The bartender was cold, and rude, not to mention the fact when we asked her to split the bill she said she could not and that we had to write down on the back of the bill how much we wanted between two credit cards?
All i know is if i do return, i will NEVER SIT AT THE BAR IF SHE IS STILL WORKING THERE!
NOTE: husky hispanic female bartender NO GOOD -

There's only one item that kept this from a 2star and that's their Chili...it's pretty much exactly the way I like my chili, tomato based and a perfect combo of spices, flavor and heat. I must say it's a bit sodium face inducing but that aside, really good.
All else is quite average and the beer selection is pretty piss poor, esp for a place that has "Bar" included in its name. -

I don't really know why my friends and classmates continue to go to this bar. The beer is overpriced, the waitstaff is rude and inattentive, and the food is mediocre. I'd be perfectly content if we never went to Hawkeye's ever again.
Its only redeeming quality is that it's close to the UIC Medical District, so you meet a lot of other people in various health professions (I'm in Physical Therapy). But really, you can go to any of the other bars on Taylor St. instead, and you'll get better food and drink specials, better atmosphere, and better service. -

pretty good... was my staple before, but have since gone across the street to Vintage lounge - good food, but on game days it gets pretty crowded and Im NOT a fan of getting shoved into the bar mutiple times by drunk men in their mid-forties...
Bartenders and wait staff are usually pretty friendly and attentive tho, so I cant completely not like this place...
Also the free parking lot is a MAJOR plus... -

I've been to Hawkeye's several times, and it's been pretty predictable; but in a good way like Starbucks is predictable. It's a dive bar, disguised as a sports bar, and it does both pretty well, albiet generically. The space is well arranged, plenty of bar seating, but also enough little nooks to sit with few friends also.
There's a big bar area downstairs which seems good for a private event, but I've never seen it being used; shame.
That said, the IMO, food is mediocre--the $1 hamburgers aren't; all you get is a burnt paddy and a bun; add lettuce, cheese, and other typical topping and you've got a $4-5 hamburger with a slab of charcoal as the meat. Meh. The Jalapeno poppers were also a bit bland, and not very cheesy. I hear their chili is good though, but i have yet to try it.
I'd suggest you stick with what they can't screw up: beer. -

I've been coming here for the past couple of years with my friends, and for the most part the food is great, but like other posts have indicated, the service here is terrible. We had really bad service this last time around and were extremely disappointed. The waiter hardly came by our table (maybe once, and looked forced), he didn't ask us if we needed anything, didn't bother to follow up at all, and overall was a complete jerk (to put it in the nicest terms). Highly disappointed. I gave the place 3 stars because the food is pretty good and the atmosphere is pretty comfortable. But other than that, it would be a 1 for service.

Hawkeye's is a great place to cut loose! Real close to UIC medical district, there are always people here. Grab a shuttle to and from Bulls and Hawks games and avoid United Center parking because you parked at the Hawkeye's lot. I'll always love Hawkeye's
BTW...just an FYI...It's named Hawkeye's after the character from the M*A*S*H* movie/TV show back in the 80's. -

In efforts to "switch things up," I dragged my sister and her manfriend to Hawkeye's to watch an Iowa football game. While it's certainly not the raging time you'll find at places like noted Iowa bar Sedgwick's, Hawkeye's is still a good time.
The bar food was tasty... the nachos were huge and more than enough to feed 3 hungry people. I dug the buckets of beer and our server was attentive and friendly. From what I recall (there were many, many beers involved), prices were fair, too.
I need to get out here more often for sporting events. There are plenty of TVs, it's crowded, but not so packed you can't get a table and the crowd seemed super-friendly. The best part? No one batted an eye at my crew's creepy "Rock Out With Your Hawk Out" t-shirts.Listed in: Cocktails

I totally thought this place was going to have a M*A*S*H theme.
Bummer.
I imagined it looking like The Swamp when you walked in and having them serve only martinis made with booze from a homemade still and grape nehis.
I pictured sexy nurses traipsing around and the dj announcing songs over a crackling intercom.
To my chagrin, it was nothing like that. Not even a little bit. -

Hawkeye's is a good standby neighborhood bar when you're not sure where else to go. They have quite a few TVs and it's usually not that packed. It is a bit smoky in the bar area, though. They have ok food for the most part (stay away from the wraps) and some pretty good food specials (1/2 price pizza on Wednesdays, but you have to make sure the server gives you the discount on your check - they sometimes 'forget').
Update12/16: I don't think it's cool for a server to offer to do a shot with you, bring a shots over, and charge you $6 per shot, including hers. Minus one star for general un-coolness.
Overall, nice place, and they've got their own parking lot about a block away. -

I've been going here for a few years now. Never had a problem with the service , even on the busiest of nights. Waitresses are easy on the eye's. Bar food is quite good in my opinion. 25 cent wings on Monday's... but I must mention that I think they serve a less then desirable wing on Monday's. Kinda scrawny... more like a sparrow's wing.
Secret parking is available if you know where to look. Owner is cool , once gave my friends and I Hawk's tickets for that night's game. Nothing was said just came over and said have a nice time guy's. Round trip bus service is available for most UC events and concerts. Used the shuttle service for the first time last year for the return of the real Van Halen. Sorry never a fan of that Hagar crap. The bus was a blast. $5 round trip... all aboard don't forget your to go cup !! Bottoms up. -

Hangout bar and restaurant plucked from Anycollegetown, USA. Can't rightfully give it one star because it really isn't there for me or my age set. Four stars if I'm a UIC junior. Five stars if I'm a UIC sophomore with a decent fake ID.
After 15 minutes of listening to the table of about a dozen police officers we were seated next to recapping the latest "Rambo" movie and no servers in sight we decided to head elsewhere. OK inside and out but smelled like last night's spill mat. -

I like this place- but I don't know why. I think part of it is nostalgia. Also, its one of the only bars on Taylor street in walking distance from the local hospitals.
They occasionally have beer specials, but their drinks are nothing special. They are good for watching sports games. There food leaves something to be desired... like good food. The only exception is their thin crust pizza is pretty good, and I dont know if they still do this, was half price on Wednesdays.
One nice thing is they have a parking lot for customers available a block south and sometimes its hard to get parking in the area. -
Review from Marie B.
I don't know why I don't learn?! Before dining at a place, I really should read the Yelp reviews! Had I done so, I would have realized this is a place where you go for beer...beer and more beer? Or, maybe a burger and fries...to go along with the beer!? Instead, I traipsed in with not one, but three friends...in hopes of getting an adequately prepared brunch. HA!? First, although the menu says, "create your own omelette" and it doesn't provide a list of options, when I attempted to "create my own omelette" from ingredients found in other omelettes on the menu, I was told this was not doable. I was given about four choices: bacon or sausage, cheese, peppers and mushrooms. If I am not mistaken, that was it. Four or five items. But, why can't I order an omelette using the items that are included in the omelettes on the menu?
The next disappointment: Although the server was sweet as gold, she was soooooo slow. When we finally received our food, the one item I had expressly ordered (a biscuit) was absent. When I asked, I was told "its on its way". A HALF HOUR later -- no, I am not exaggerating -- the waitress brought this cold, hard THING. As a southern girl, I cannot call that hockey puck a "biscuit". It was so dry, and so hard. Why on earth would any self-respecting chef...or even cook...send something like that out? Anyway, am sure this is a terrific place for beer, beer and more beer. But, if you are looking for edible food...keep looking. -
Review from Annie W.
After a day of unpacking and moving, we mostly gravitated towards this place tonight because of its patio seating (outdoor dining in Chicago during summer nights is so so sweet). This place is your typical American bar type of fare with fairly large portions and friendly, laidback service.
My friends got the daily special: Chicken Parmesan. The noodles were SOGGY! as if it had been sitting boiling for hours. Some parts of the chicken was dry and the best part was probably the accompanying slices of French buttered bread.
My only complaints about my order of Jerk Chicken Sandwich was that I didn't like the bun. It may have claimed to be a gourmet bakery bun but it was just super dry so I ate my sandwich out (like protein style at In N Out). The chicken was flavorful though some parts a tad dry but tasty enough that I didn't even use the honey-lime dressing on the side. They give you generous slices of tomatoes, red onions and nearly a half platterful of french fries.
Would I come back here again? It's not really my scene and not really my favorite kind of food so probably not unless it's to go with the flow if friends want to. -

Hawkeye's is one of the major hangouts for UIC students (and Chicago PD). The food is decent, and the place is generally a good time on a Thursday or Friday night. Don't plan on having a happy Designated Driver, though, as they're nearly spend as much on pop as you will on beer with their poor policy of expensive pop and no free refills. You can get a can or bottle of beer cheaper than a pop many nights of the week, and a pitcher of beer is always cheaper than pop pint-for-pint. It seems like poor policy and a lack of social conscious from this establishment.
At a recent visit for lunch we were given a sandwich version of a wrap we ordered, which included fries instead of the fruit cup it was supposed to come with. The waitress seemed completely disinterested in the fact we received the wrong food, and even after we said we would fix it ourselves by just taking off the bread and making it a wrap if she could get us a wrap and a fruit cup.
She came back, and asked if we could just make due with what was there because "they were running low on wraps".
Not out, just running low.
Our stunned silence was only ended after she also asked if she could charge us for the fruit cup. Absolute madness.
Pros: Decent Crowds, Occasional cheap-ish beer
Cons: Some bad, slow service, expensive pop with no Free Refills keeps DD's away -

Best thing about this bar/restaurant on the UIC campus is the bus that takes you to events (sports: sox, bulls, blackhawks) and concerts at the UIC Pavilion and the United Center.
They have a parking lot a block away that fits around 60 cars and is FREE. The bus is $5 rountrip and you can bring your drink on in a plastic cup.
The bar itself is pretty decent. OK prices and the service is ok as well. Food is decently priced and 4 out of 5 stars I'd say. Are you catching my drift here?
Since its near Rush and UIC its often times college kids and at the Happy Hour time period nurses and other medical types. -

Can't really say much that has not been said by Suz M. or Crystal R.
I was pretty bummed about the bland food and the hair in the spinach dip, but was mostly disappointed that Alan Alda wasn't our server.
They did give us quite a nice comp on our food which I really appreciated, but it didn't make up for the general "blah" I got from this place. It could be alright for just drinks, but I don't think I'll venture there again anytime soon. -

Definitely not the best place to go on Taylor St. That being said, however, it's definitely not the worst either. The food is pretty decent and the service is okay. This will likely be the busiest place you'll find on Taylor, so if you're into crowded college bars, this is your place.
I've definitely had a good time here more than once, and will likely return. It really is, to me, just a mediocre college bar with a large clientele. -

I just love the chicken here!
Even though I choose to sit at the bar I usually order anything from Mediterranean Stuffed Chicken, Jerk Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Pot Pie! The salmon and grilled veggies (on a skewer) are also great and the waitresses are on top of it all :) -

While I likely wouldn't go out of my way to make this the destination of my night, it's a good place to stop when I am in the neighborhood.
Don't expect to get any heavy-handed cocktails served to you here though since their pours are measured by gauges on the bottles.
The crowd ranges in age, the music spans the genres and altogether the bar isn't usually too loud that you will wake up hoarse the next day from trying to shout to the person right next to you. -

I lived in the neighborhood for a few years (no, I wasn't still in college), and it always struck me as one of the few places where all the UIC kids would go. Despite it being a "college bar", the food is excellent, so I tend to go there for meals rather than to get a beer.
Yesterday I stopped in for a lovely steak + avocado salad and was pleasantly surprised. The beer specials are OK, too.
I want to try their wings next time.
