I first met Captain Steve and his son JJ at the Long Beach scuba show a month before my trip to Maui. I liked the idea of diving Lanai and wanted to try something a little different so I booked a day with him for my Maui trip.
I had an amazing time and wish I could have gone out a second day. You show up at a reasonable hour in the morning and it's located in Lahaina so if you're staying in Kaanapali it's super close. You arrive and hand over your gear and they do the rest.
The ride out to Lanai is about 40 minutes and their boat is very clean and organized. I think there were maybe about 9 people on our dive and we were broken into two dive groups. My DM was Heath and he was awesome, super friendly and made you feel safe.
Lanai is insane!! We saw a bunch of dolphins on the way out there and Captain Steve stopped for a good ten minutes so everybody could watch.
The reasons that I would recommend Dive Maui:
- Captain Steve has been doing this for a very long time and is considered the expert on Lanai diving.
- Their boat is big, new, clean and very organized with baskets to put your wet gear and dry boxes for dry storage and they even label them with your name on it!
- The crew is very friendly, and catered to everybody's needs from beginning divers doing their certification dives, and advanced divers. I showed up, handed them my dive gear and they set everything up and even washed my gear for me.
- Warm water shower at the end of your dives is always a plus!
I've been on a lot of dive boats and will definitely return to Dive Maui when I'm back in Maui (Hopefully in Feb. for their wale diving trips)

Awesome dive operation. Excellent for experienced divers. If I could give more stars, I would.
Dove with Captain Steve and Misty on a trip to Lanai. Boat had seven divers for the day which was a perfect number for the size of the craft. 8AM check-in was nice, after check-in our gear was moved and set up at the boat for us. For those who may be apprehensive about having their own gear handled, Steve is very professional and does a great job. He's happy to make any gear adjustments you want, and is on the ball quickly (I had my gear swapped out pretty much as soon as i had finished a cookie!), amazing considering he's both boat captain and deckhand simultaneously.
Trip itself to Lanai took around 40 minutes, the boat is actually really stable and affords great unobstructed views on the way over. They pick sites that have no other boats and are based on the conditions for the day, and that Steve probably selected during his own surveys. Dive briefings are straightforward and the flexible bottom time is excellent (go up on your own, you always know where the mooring is at all times if not the DM will point you in the right direction). Misty did a great job DMing both dives.
Gear is washed and taken back to the shop for you upon getting off, no more than 15 minutes was spent waiting. Excellent job, guys.
I personally believe the value of a good dive trip is not so much in what you see but in how much freedom you're treated to as a diver. Hawaiian Rafting Adventures gets the balance just right, at a price point that's less than it's bigger competitors. -

This is a great crew of folks who run a fun and laid back dive experience. Though Captain Steve was off island at a marine summit I did get to meet the rest of the crew who are a young and fun bunch who clearly love living the Maui dive life. The location is convenient to Lahaina and it is a quick walk down to the dock from the shop. Costs are comparable or less than many of the other local shops, particularly if you book through their website and get the 15% discount. The equipment is modern and in good shape, and while you may be initially skeptical of what looks like the world largest whitewater raft, the boat is actually nice, modern, and comfortable as well.
I am a recreational diver with probably 25 dives under my belt so I have experienced a few different approaches - some very regimented and some very disorganized. The balance these guys struck worked fine for me - they were attentive to any concerns but let us move at our own pace, explore freely as long as we were comfortable and still in touch with the group.
It's nice that these guys get started a bit later than many of the other outfits (8AM check in) so you can get your beauty sleep as well. You might want to get there a bit early to grab one of the three parking spots out front though, or walk from your hotel.
If I'm back in Maui I will definitely dive with these guys again!

History
Established in 1993
Hawaiian Rafting Adventures was founded in the early '90s in the beautiful, sleepy town of Lahaina. Our founder, Captain Steve Juarez, was a former military and commercial diver who decided to follow his passion for marine life and open a dive shop.
In addition to being a world-class dive instructor, Captain Steve is also an avid underwater photographer and marine conservationist. He is active in projects by NASA, and is a leading advocate of the Manta Pacific Research Foundation (MPRF), www.mantapacific.org.
Through a partnership with Tim Clark at MPRF, Steve and Tim have worked to identify individual Manta Rays on Kona and Maui. Between Tim and Steve's photos, over 60 have been identified on the Maui site, in addition to the 100 known to reside off Kona. MPRF is working with State Legislators to produce a bill to protect Mantas in Hawaii.
Meet the Manager: Captain Steve J.
Captain Steve Juarez is a lifelong outdoors enthusiast and has been diving professionally for over 30 years.
As a young man, Captain Steve served as a military diver in the Marines. Upon completion of his military service, he began doing commercial dives for large underwater projects, often operating under extreme conditions.
In 1993, he achieved a dream of his, and opened Hawaiian Rafting Adventures in the beautiful, sleepy town of Lahaina. As one of Maui's longest-running dive operations, Hawaiian Rafting Adventures is one of the most trusted names on Maui.
