LATE NIGHT REVIEW_________________________________
Drinks: Great mojito selection!
Atmosphere: This is a great place to go, chill out, and get a drink. They have great classic Salsa music playing all the time. Loves it! I don't like going to close to when dinner ends because it smells to much like food, especially fish.
Decor: Simple, modern, cute. I like that there is so much group seating and booth space.
Far and away, the mojito's are the best here - try the mango mojito. I don't even like mango and I suck these down like water. They aren't for the faint of heart or the light of wallet....The food is good - nothing really to write home about. Okay, maybe those garlic fries are pretty damn tasty. Yum.
It can get pretty noisy, not really good for a first date, but great with a group of friends. Good place to start out a weekend night if you are looking for the "WC" experience.... haha ha!

I was planning on giving this spot 2 stars, but then I could not think of a reason to do so. I went here on Monday ready to have a good time and when I left, I was in a foul mood and hungry.
Since I was the DD, I avoided their drinks (This might have change my rating dramatically). There was not much for the veggie and what I did have was sub-par. The fried plantains were a bit cold and left an oily film on the roof of my mouth. Ditto for the garlic fries. The endive salad was alright, but not as a main course.
Now a rant on service.
I was served water (not offered anything else)- do they have anything else? My glass was filled 2x for the 2 hours I was there even though I went through it within 5 minutes of my fill up. I spent a lot of time chewing ice. But this gave me plenty of time to check out the place.
The place.
Looks nice at first glance. But when you have time on your hands you'll notice the hideously cheap picture frames that hold posters that are wrinkling up- Com'on it doesn't cost that much to have them dry mounted.
I guess this place is popular for the same reason Jelly shoes were. Fans of this place will look back later in life and say "Why?" (or they won't)

I've never tried cuban food before, so my cousin recommended this place as having the "BEST AUTHENTIC MOJITOS" around. Alright, I took her word.
The place is rather small, but I appreciated the vibrant colors and hip decor. In a party of 4 we had the following items:
-Shrimp Ceviche $9 (served with Tomatoes, Onions, Cucumber,
Jalapeno & Cilantro with Spicy Yucca Chips)
-Halibut Ceviche $9 (Cured Halibut, Mango, Black Beans,
Onions, Peppers and Cilantro with Plantain Chips)
-Braised Lamb Shank $18 (served with Boniato Mash & Seasonal Vegetables)
-Cane Glazed Pork Chops $16 (served with Pineapple Rum Chutney,
Boniato Mash & Black Beans)
-Bistec a la Havana Marinated Steak $18 (served over Rice & Beans with Grilled Pineapple)
Overall I enjoyed this place. It's trendy, fresh, has an "upscale" vibe, yet is casual enough to come in jeans and a polo shirt. Although I would say the food is obviously toned-down for the American pallete, it was still very delicious. Don't forget their mojitos! There's no better time to order a traditional cuban mojito than from a cuban restaurant!

I have always wanted to try this restaurant because it looks so hip and inviting. I've also never really had Cuban food before, and I'm always down to try new things. Too bad this place failed to really give me a taste of what Cuban food is. The ceviche was so bland; the shrimp lacked any flavor and there was no acidic taste of lemon/lime that I am used to in places like Cha Cha Cha in the city. I had the halibut, which was also slightly bland and small in portion, considering the price I paid for it. The rice that came with it was bland as well! Lacking more flavor than plain white rice. My boyfriend ordered bisteca medium rare, and that was pretty good, which is why I will give the place an overall 3 stars. The mojitos are decent as well.
But overall, bland. Terribly bland. And ultimately, it's not a restaurant that I would give a second chance to.

Mojitos, si. Nuff said.
I love going here periodically for lunch. The food is a tad more expensive that I would like, especially since some of it is relatively straightforward (Christians and Moors, black beans and white rice).
However, the fried plantains are wonderful, as are the beans mentioned above. In general, the food is not too distant from the comfort foods of my youth (in southern Louisiana, but the same ideas apply: spices, easy to access inexpensive ingredients, filling and interesting to the palate).
I think that going here too often would make it less remarkable to me, but in the half-dozen times I've been, it's always been worth it. The parking can be dodgy, because it's all on the street. The decor inside is sparse, open, and contemporary with some interesting pictures scattered around.

This place was really good. I think this would be a great place for a first or second date, or a business dinner.
My recommendations to start off would be the fried plantains. These little bits are tasty appetizers that are great to share. Then you have to go on to the mango chicken salad! The mango chicken salad is my personal favorite, when I'm worrying about how many calories I'm taking in. The base veggies are fresh and the mango itself is very ripe. Next if you don't mind sharing more are the Yucca fritters. Yucca is something that I think is like a potato? I don't know Yelpers help me out! Finally, my friends always like the grilled shrimp. Something about the sweet sauce that they grill it with that makes it just right.
The place has a nice and trendy atmosphere. Like I said, a good place for a first or second date - or a business meeting. Not too loud which I really like. Great place to share dishes.

5 stars for mojitos (taste+selection). 5 million stars for their mojito pitchers (the greatest thing ever). 3 star for their food - it's not bad but you can get much better food at much better price/portion elsewhere. But as far as their mojitos go - their quality is consistently excellent. I have never been disappointed with anything that I ordered from their mojito menu.
After eating here for the first time, I would have rated this place three stars The drinks were decent, although a little too sugary for my taste, and the food was okay. I ordered the halibut entree the first time around, and tried some of the tapas dishes and entrees that my friends ordered. The grilled shrimp was the best dish I had that night while everything else was just okay. Just okay would have been fine for about $10-15/dish, but "just okay" didn't cut it for almost $20/entree.
However, I went back tonight for dinner, and only ordered the tapas and mojitos. Again, the mojitos didn't impress me because my mango mojito was too sugary and my bf's peach one reminded me of cough syrup. The grill shrimp was even better the second time around and I probably would get two orders next time. The crab cakes were not terribly impressive and tasted a little too fishy for me. The skirt steak was tender and flavorful and the potatoes were surprisingly good too.
Our server was extremely friendly and attentive and we didn't have any problems getting a table on a Thursday night around 9pm. I would eat here again, but probably skip the drinks the next time around and save room to try dessert. However, my wallet tells me I can only afford to eat here occasionally, that is, unless I can somehow convince my stomach that I only need to eat once a week.
The only thing well worth your money here is their MOJITOS! Especially their Mango mojitos!! Really really good. My best friend and I down a whole pitcher by ourselves.. and maybe even 2 more pitchers! Hahah.
Tried the mussles. It was alright, nothing you cant cook by yourself. Meals are usually very small for something VERY expensive. My friends spent $230 for a dinner of 6. Eeks.
I'll only go here to show support for my friend's birthday and not a casual dinner. But if you must... just stop by and grab a MANGO mojito... then leave. =)
Food: 5 stars - The first time my hubby took me here, I ordered pan seared tuna. Woops! I didn't know that meant "raw in the middle." I was set to never come back, but he insisted we return for our one year anniversary. I'm so glad we did. All we ever order here are the entrees (although I know some people that just make a meal out of the tapas), and we usually go with the steak and the pork chop. SOOOOOOO good. :) Heaven in my mouth. It's a little pricey ($15-$20 per plate) so we only go on special occasions. Yummy!
The only "con" is the ambiance... it's downright LOUD at night as it turns into chic-bar-scene. I can barely hear my husband when we opt for the late night dinner.
Call for reservations as this place is hopping and it can take an hour to get seats.
I had a VERY good time celebrating my birthday here a couple days ago. But I think that had more to do with the company of my dear friends than the food.
I did like their mojitos. But I can't justify returning to a restaurant where I didn't enjoy the food. One of my coworkers told me that he thought the food there was lacking in flavor. I guess I just had to try it once. I ordered the seared tuna. Definitely needed some more .....something. And expensive for the quality they offered. My friends who joined me all agreed that the food was disappointing. I give them 3 stars for the mojitos and for having pretty good service. I would come back for drinks. But not for dinner or tapas.

Mojitos: fantastic. Food: not so much. I went for drinks and dinner with my parents. We got some tapas and entrees. The grilled shrimp was good, if a little bland. The Moors and Christians (black beans and rice) were very very bland.
My dad had the Ropa Viejo, which tasted like high quality Chef Boyardee. My cumin crusted tuna was burnt on the outside(not seared or cooked, but burnt) and was tasteless. Mom's pork tenderloin was bland too. The veggies on the side of my tuna and the yummy mojito mulata(with dark rum) were the highlights of my meal.
I think this place works for drinks and tapas, but nothing else. The service was friendly and quick.
Well I was quite pleased with Havana.
I had the twice fried plantains for an appetizer and they were delicious. The pineapple salsa on top of them was sweet but not too sweet.
I had the garlic studded pork tenderloin for the main course. The sweet potato mash that it came with was to die for and the sauce on the pork was also very good. The pork itself was cooked perfectly but there wasn't enough garlic for my taste, I'm a big garlic fan!
I was way too full for dessert but I did have one raspberry mojito which was quite tasty. If I hadn't been full I definitely would've tried another mojiito. It's ok though, it gives me an excuse to go back :)
You know what, I don't enjoy Mojitos because of the rum, but I LOVED the mojitos here at Havana.
It may have been the substitution of a whole bottle of Grey Goose that made it work for me, but we got a few pitchers and it was like juice. The food was great. I got the salmon with the dijon glaze and pineapple salsa. It came with amazing seasonal veggies and mashed potatoes. Perfect size dish too! It wasn't too small, but not enormous. The salmon was moist and tasted well with the pineapple. All in all a great experience. The waitress was a sweetheart too!
Almost every review is about the mojitos, but it is a restaurant so the food needs to be at least respectable right? I started with the grilled shrimp in cilantro-lime over rice, which sounds amazing, but is only mediocre -- especially at $10.
For an entree I tried the cumin crusted tuna, which was $19 and it was alright, but definitely not great. I love ahi nearly every way you could prepare it, but this was over cooked and over spiced. Not really very good texture either unfortunately.
Several yelpers are stating that it may have been tasting real mojitos in cuba/miami ruined it for them....its not accurate. It is the fact that Havana's mojitos taste like flavored smirnoff ice with mint leaves--especially the flavored mojitos they offer (Razz, Apple, Peach etc). There are better mojitos in WC, you don't need to go all the way to Miami.
It should be noted that the service we had there was excellent despite it being completely packed. The people were quick and polite and the prices are ok as long as you don't have 4-5 mojitos a piece at $7.
This place is quasi-hip and close to the bars in downtown WC so I'll probably try it again, but I wasn't wowed the first time.

I love Havana - the mojitos and tapas that is. Service could be improved - if it were I'd give it four stars.
I went here back in November 2007 on a first date. The wait for a table was long but we were able to find a free table in the very very small bar area.
We (same guy) went here earlier this month (May 08) and again the wait was long. We stood in a very very crowded bar with tons of tables open!
We went ahead and put our name on the list for a table and tried to find a spot at the bar for a few mojitos. I was able to sit down at the bar and we ordered the plantains. After two drinks and the appetizer - we finally were called for our table, but we were already full and a little sick of the place.
As we left, we noticed tons of open tables that were available.
Havana is great if you get there early because unless you have more than 8 in your party they don't take a reservation!
I keep hearing how great the mojitos are.... Maybe I came in too soon after I returned from Miami/Key West? I mean, these were muddled swill. Come on Dub Crizzle! Step it up a notch. Although, if you have not had the pleasure of dangerously-close-to-Cuba mojitos, maybe you'll be fine.
Oh, but the food is amazing though. Especially the ahi, the fried plantains, and the mojo sauce...pronounced Mo-ho...not mo-joe...my bad.
It's been over a year though since I returned from my Gulf Coast Heartbreaker tour. Maybe my tastebuds lost their memory. If I return and like the mojitos, I will throw up another star.

You think you've tasted the best mojito? Well you haven't... unless you've had mojitos at Havana's. So bad ass and comes in every flavor you can think of... Mango is my fave. The restaurant is a bit small but has that Latin flava. Menu choices aren't too many but what they do offer is all good. The tapas are excellent.
Review is only based upon the Mojitos. Let me preface this review by mentioning that I had my first mojito in CUBA. I remember returning from Cuba and trying to find a bartender or a bar that could make a decent mojito. Now they are a very *in* drink, strange, huh? Well, this place comes about the closest to the mojitos that I had in Cuba. Most mojitos I've had in the bay area are way too sweet.

I am glad to see that I am not the only person who didn't like the mojitos. My friends did and do swear by this place for mojitos. They are from Nicaragua WTF do they know? One night to be nice, i bought the pitcher to get the evening started.
The mojitos are garbage. Too much mint and too much lime, no balance of flavors and they are proud to proclaim their use of Bacardi rum on the menu. Bacardi rum should only be used for cooking, and only then if you are in college and on a budget. I am telling you when the embargo is lifted with cuba you will swear you have been drinking horse piss. As I look at my bottle of Havana Club (made in Cuba) I had to pick up while traveling overseas. Damn US foreign policy.
The cuban sandwich's are good. The wait is bad. It is like a total hipster/poser place. A chance for people who think salsa is to spicy to try and say they got some soul and latin flavor if you know what I mean.
Staff is very nice.
My friend have had the paella and some of the other dishes that I can't eat (mussels/clams/bivalves - yuck, long story)
Came here for my mom's birthday and the food was good. Mojitos were too sweet for me, but I tend to like more sour flavors, so if you like sweet go for a mango mojito.
What I didn't like was the service. Basically they are your typical Danville snooty chicks who do a little too much coke. Don't ask them if a particular dish is good because their response to every single one will be "IT'S REALLY GOOD!," thats it. I just got a bad vibe from them.
Overall, not a bad place. Decent food, cool decor and ambiance, snobby waitresses.
Havana would have gotten five stars if the reservation situation was better. First, they don't take reservations and second they tell you one time over the phone and you can walk in 5 minutes later and that time has double. The wait can be annoying but the food and drinks are well worth it.
This was the first place I tried mojitos and now I don't want them from anywhere else! My favorite is the pinapple or pina colada. The food is also delicious and the ambience is very lively.
Amazing food, but even better amazing mojitos! DELICIOUS payella & scallops.... YUMMY
Love the food and the mojitos (especially the mango one). We used to go there more when they first opened, but haven't been in a while because I hate waiting an hour for a table for two (especially when there are so many other dining options in the area), and they won't take reservations for parties smaller than 8. Huh?
Although I've had much better mojitos elsewhere in the Bay, I'd have to say that their $30 pitchers do quite the job, especially when shared between two ladies both with low tolerance for alcohol. Well... one of them has a low tolerance for alcohol, and that sure ain't me! But it still does the job on me.
Out of all their tapas plates, the ones that stand out the most and that I have to order each time are their Halibut Ceviche and Chimchurri Skirt Steak. Since I'm a big seafood person, I can just order their Halibut Ceviche and seriously be content with my meal.
Havana can get pretty packed on Thursday nights ("Thursday is the new Friday!"). But the crowd is fairly professional, not like the usual Creek/Lamorinda crowd found at Crogans. Which means, I can sit here and eat without getting annoyed at the other people in the restaurant! The staff are pretty friendly and accommodating. You know this place is in Walnut Creek but at the same times doesn't feel "Walnut Creek".

I have had two mojitos in my entire life. The one I made and one from Havana... in Walnut Creek. Let me tell you about the one I made first. Here's the recipe;
Start with some crappy cheap Bacardi rum and stir in a couple of spoonfuls of mint jelly. Pour over ice and enjoy. Actually enjoy is such a strong word. More like gag. I didn't have any fresh mint or sugar in the house at the time so I used the next best thing. Mint jelly is like sugar and mint all in one, right? WRONG!!! It was an experience that almost completely ruined ever drinking mojitos again for me.
The other mojito I had was better and was from Havana but I have since boycotted them for a couple of reasons. They're trendy (albeit a 10+ year trend) and bartenders hate making them. Well, there's one more reason that I shall keep to myself.
So me and my bro went in here to see what the buzz was about. We had already eaten dinner and drank a couple of pitchers of beer at Pyramid and walking down the street we saw this place. It was crowded but hoppin'.
We each had a regular mojito and shared some ceviche that was good but somewhat small and a bit frou-frou in its presentation. You will hear me lament the lack of Puerto Rican food on the West Coast and although Cuban is similar it will not make it on my list of Puerto Rican Restaurants.
So Havana was a bit trendy, fairly priced but not bad. I don't long to go back though.
3.5 stars ...
They don't take reservations for parties smaller than 8 ... and on a Friday night arriving at 8, we had about a 25 minute wait. Once we were seated, we waited for another 15 minutes to get our order taken, but at least she apologized for the slow service.
Didn't like the peach mojito ... or the virgin mojito ... $4 for limeade? Puuuhlease. They will try to sell you on a pitcher .... resist and go with a beer instead. I was unimpressed.
We ordered 9 out of 11 of the tapas across 4 pretty hungry people. It seemed to be just the right amount of food. A party of 4 definitely would be the optimal size then for this place if you're looking to try a lot of the food.
- Shrimp ceviche was yummy, but not sour / limey enough, the halibut ceviche was yummy, but a bit too sweet with the mangos ... (we ended up combining the two).
- I didn't like the twice fried plaintains, but my friends did.
- Scallops were perfect. Plump, juicy and cooked perfectly.
- Garlic fries were thin and crunchy, so don't pass those up just cause it seems common.
- Skirt steak was not bad
- Mussels were pretty darn good
Despite the slow start, our food came out quickly. I commented that I'm glad that I don't work near this place cause otherwise I'd be fatter than I already am. That itself warrants me rounding UP to 4 stars.

I'm Cuban and originally I wrote a whole different review on this place. After giving it some thought I decided to rewrite it.
Although this place does not have authentic Cuban food, it does come close. I don't think the owners are Cuban, but they certainly did their homework getting the names and items right.
A lot of the items have ingredients that are not in typical Cuban food, nonetheless, I liked it. I had the Ropa Vieja, which was very good. The Black bean soup was not what I expected, but it wasn't bad either.
I think that it would be nice if they ditched some of the non Cuban ingredients, but maybe that's what makes them successful.
Overall they do get a lot of flavors right or at least come close.
By far the best thing they have going are the Mojitos. These are great! I wouldn't suggest you drive if you plan on having a few of these!
They have great service and the place is very clean. It's a fun place to go to and they do have good food even if it's not authentic.
After I first wrote a review about this place Zack & Joelle Scott who are the owners wrote me and were very nice even though my review wasn't. It's good to see that they like to know what people think of their place and they responded to it. In a very nice way too.

Hidden gem of Walnut Creek! Unique menu options, unbeatable mojitos, and an atmosphere designed for comfort, celebration, and the tendency to linger. I highly recommend going with friends for a fun, local night and order lots of tapas and share. It's also well priced which is great.
I'd been wanting to try this place out for a while but hadn't gone because let's face it, how often do I go to WC to eat when I live in this fab dining mecca?
-The food was mediocre. I really love Cuban but this is putting some kinda crazy CA twist on it or something, and not that flavorful to boot.
-Service was okay, but I had to ask out server to clear our apps plates when she brought out our entrees. AS IF I have to ask!
-Forget about ambiance. It's past 9p.m. and I have a little toddler running around the place and showing up at my lap. (Note: I L-O-V-E little ones, but what is a little one doing out so late and why are you letting them run around and mess up other people's dining experience?)
Eh...definitely won't be back. I'm thinking Cuban food is best eaten out of mom & pop places or in L.A. or FL. If I wanted food that flavorless, I would have cooked it myself...
P.S. I was horrified to see people dressed in sweats, t-shirts and baseball caps. I was even MORE horrified to see someone in a visor, an actual visor! It's 9p and pouring outside, what good does a visor do you right now? Someone please enlighten me.
P.P.S. Although they offer a vast array of mojitos, I wished they would use real fruit juices and/or purees instead of melon pucker this and flavored rums that. I do remember the regular mojito being good though.

Their mojitos are pretty good and for a pitcher is $30!! Not bad!
It is pretty small inside, but every table was full and every table had something that looked pretty yummy on it! Our wait was for 45 minutes, but we couldn't wait out the 45 minutes. The bar area was really small and so just standing around there, you run the risk of being in the way of the waiters and bus boys!
So with our pitcher in hand, we stood by the restrooms and drank up and then left.
Definitely will go back here with the fiance and get some grub. Then maybe I can bump up my rating a star or two!!
There was a group of 8 of us and we were able to order most of the things on the menu. I had the cane glazed pork chops. Others had the bisteca de havana, garlic fries, crab cakes, grill sampler, house salad, mango chicken salad. They were all good. We also had the plantains, but they were a little dry. We were definitely full when we left.
The mojitos were good, but nothing spectacular. We have a variety of those also, traditional, limon, and pineapple. They were tasty, and they do sell them by the pitchers, but there wasn't much of a discount. A traditional mojito costs $6, a pitcher holds about 5 glasses and costs $30. Where's the deal?
I was very impressed with Havana. I don't really know what Cuban food is, but I was kind of guessing that this was more of a Cuban-fusion type restaurant rather than traditional Cuban. EIther way, I enjoyed every morsel that came into my mouth while I was there. A friend and I decided to do tapas rather than entrees so we could get a good sampling of flavors. The only thing I did not like about this place is the Ambience. I didn't really like the decor and It was noisy as hell. The wait at 7:00pm on a Saturday night was 45 to an hour. Here is what we ordered:
1. Mussels (cooked in saffron and wine) - The mussels were delicious and definitely picked up all the flavors. Not fishy tasting at all. I would highly recommend this dish if you like mussels. Mussels are really hit-and-miss and this place definitely served up a hit.
2. Mixed Grill - VERY tasty and hit the spot as more of a mini-entree. It was 2 scewers each with an absolutely perfecty cooked pice of pork tenderloin, a piece of beef, and a piece of choritzo. The scewers were served over a very flavorful rice and topped with mango salsa. I seriously thought the pork was a piece of dark meat chicken. It was that tender.
3. Crab cakes with pinepple aioli - the crab cakes were perfect. Just what I expected crab cakes to be. The pineapple aioli was a nice touch. It was served with a small salad with more pineapple aioli. Very yummy!
4. Cuban sandwich - pork cooked just right. Not tough in the least. The bread they use is perfect for pressing--just the right amount of soft and toasty. The only thing I wanted was a little more pickle.
5. MOJITOS! They have a great drink menu. My friend ordered a peach mojito and she was loving it. I ordered the virgin mojito (too much drinking the night before) and I was shocked at how much it tasted just like the real thing. I even asked the bartender to promise me there was no alcohol in mine. I sucked it down pretty quick.
Overall, it was a great experience. The staff was friendly and prompt. I hope I get to go back soon.
Took in dinner last night before a show at the Lesher. Nice vibe in the otherwise suburban Walnut Creek chain mix of places.
Mojitos, some lose mint leaves in a mix of juice and run of the mill rum, was hoping for fresh made, but seeing it brought out by the pitcher, ala 55 gallon drum style.
Halibut Cerviche was good, wife had a seasoned steak with rice and beans. Not quite Miami authentic, but not bad. Paella had nice mix of fish and some juicy jumbo prawns, just a hint of saffron.
Maybe it was what we ordered, but the food was a little disappointing. We ordered the paella, the plantains, and the crab cakes. The crab cakes were good, but I feel that they're usually good no matter where you go. The plantains I feel requires an acquired taste b/c I didn't like it, whereas other members of my party thought they were okay, but dry. The paella is okay, if you never had it before, but if you're someone like me who has had really great paella, this one is no contender.
We also had a couple of mojitos since everyone praises it. I got the limon and my cousin got the melon. I liked the melon, and while I thought mine could've been stronger, my cousin was tipsy after one glass.
It's a good spot...not great. I liked the mojitos and tapas...
I had a mild celebrity siting here... we ran into Sheena's mom from the bachelor. Yes she is every bit as crazy as she was on the show, and every bit at wasted.
I don't know much about the menu, only that the mojitos are pretty good, good enough to visit the restaurant.

YUM!! We shared tapas of mussels - they were really good but there were lots of broken shells (which I kept having to pull out of my mouth - cute, especially on a first date!). For dinner I had the halibut and it was DELICIOUS!! My date had the pork chops - he was a happy camper too! We each tried a mojito (de Raz and de Mango) - I wasn't overly impressed because it was a bit sour. I think my date enjoyed his .... but not sure.
The place is super cute! You feel like you're in a Caribbean town with the colors and just the entire feel was .... relaxing and chill. It was great.
I've also been told they have a GREAT HAPPY HOUR.
We came here as one of our favorite waiters from Tropix (after it was sold) ended up here.
The place was hopping on a Thurs. Night. We waited for a table in Philip's section and drank up great mojitos.
Cool cement floors and out-doorish feel even though inside..felt a little like I was back in Miami
We ordered a couple of appetizers (lots of food) and had the bisteca and seabass for dinner.
MMMM...MMMMM...MMMM, great food, our favorite server , what more could a couple ask for?
