Nice place to gather with friends and family ....cavernous place so if you talk loud you won't stick out plus the prices are fairly reasonable. You can just order a bunch of things (like the tapas route) and share with everybody than the individual dinners. I prefer the "dump all the dishes in the middle" and scoop onto our plates.
Mojitos are awesome here...in particular to the mango one. The $5 happy hour mojitos only applies to regular mojitos, not the flavored ones.
Signature dishes to recommend are the conch fritters, seafood paella, and guava-glazed baby back ribs. I've tried other tapas and their sandwiches, nothing special. But the 3 signature dishes I've recommended......ooohwee yummy!
I've been to Cuba a couple of times, and every time someone says we're going for Cuban food, I'm always slightly confused. I'll leave it there.
I wasn't so impressed with anything about this place, other than that it was extremely loud.
Been to this location twice and the 110th/Broaway location once.
Consistent food and tasty mojitos.
The Times Square location can be a little cheesy with the plastic flamingo-type things in your drinks, but the atmosphere and live music at both of the locations really make for a fun evening out.
Havana Central is a diamond, in the rough that is the Times Square area.
I've spent a lot of time in Miami and i LOVE Cuban food. We stumbled upon this place while exploring Midtown, and decided to go in for a cafe cubano. So glad we did. It was Friday night, and the band they had was incredible! We enjoyed our coffees, but we weren't hungry. It is a good spot to listen to some excellent Afro-cubano jams! The bar was crowded, but not too crowded to function. They have pitchers of sangrias and mojitos available, and tons of beers.
The next day we returned for lunch. The standard of Cuban food, the Cuban sandwich, was STELLAR. I've had cubans all over Florida, and this one ranks up there with anything I've had in Little Havana. The plantains were cooked perfectly and the yellow rice and black beans were excellent as well.
This is a REAL Cuban restaurant, not some Times Square version of one. Check it out...you won't be sorry!
Havana Central is one of the best places to stop at in the area! From the moment you walk in you feel as if you are in Cuba in the 1920's. The spacious seating with the tropical plants and slow-moving fans all add to the ambiance.
They have a wide variety of delicious cocktails like fresh sangria and pineapple mojitos. The Ceviche is served perfectly garnished in a martini glass.
The courses are very large and are certainly large enough for 2 to split.
Also, don't leave without trying the tres leches cake. It's one of the best desserts I've ever tried.
This place was pretty crowded when I arrived due to the happy hour but my friends and I were able to take advantage of it while we were having dinner. I ordered steak which was just okay. I love steak and this one was kind of dry. Even the beans were dry. Hardly any sauce and just beans. Hows a girl going to get some iron?
Either way my sangria was good, flan was even better, my waiter was cute but a bit slow to take our orders, and I didn't enjoy my mojito but I've just come to the conclusion that I do not like that crap.
Had dinner here last night with my best friend. The place was pretty busy but luckily we were seated promptly considering its in a Times Square location. They had a band playing for entertainment but not sure if it's a daily thing there. Very loud, vibrant scene, so not suitable for someone who wants to dine quietly, after all, it is a Cuban restaurant. We had the empanada sampler (with beef, chicken and shrimp) and chicharon de pollo to start and all were equally tasty. For our main course, we decided to share a plate of arroz con pollo (boneless chicken and saffron yellow rice) with a side of tostones and chimichurri sauce. Add a little bit of that green hot sauce to kick it up a notch and bam! And for dessert, we had the tres leches and flan with café con leche. Perfect way to end the evening. Delicious food, but pricey. Service was good, but not great. Definitely good for groups, they have an upstairs area if you want to host a private party.
I enjoyed the union square location better.
I went into Havana Central expecting a Cuban "theme restaurant" catering to a broad mix of domestic and international tourists than a true Cuban restaurant.. Havana Central doesn't have the overly commercial feel of Mars 2112, Bubba Gump, TGI Fridays, or the Hard Rock Cafe. I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty food, excellent drinks, and adequate service.
Drinks are terrific. You can't go wrong with the house specialties -- sangria ($8-$9/glass) or mojitos ($9-$10/glass). If you're feeling adventurous, go for the Sangria Sampler and try 4 of the "Signature Sangrias". Havana Central also serves up regional beers - Sol, Presidente, Dos Equis, and Corona.
The menu (http://www.havanacentr...) features large portions of reasonably priced Cuban favorites. Appetizers run from $3 for an empanada to $15 for lobster-stuffed avocado. I recommend the sharing the $14 sampler platter -- a platter of chorizo, tostones, maduros, chicharrones, and an empanada.
Entrees run from $12 for a large plate of arroz con pollo / chicken with rice to $26 for a mariscada seafood stew or $29 for bone-in ribeye steak. Havana Central's signature dish is its paella - a stew-like combo of saffron rice and vegetables along with chorizo sausage, chicken, clams, mussels, and shrimp served to your table bubbling in a cast iron pot. Cuban sandwiches run from $9 for a standard pressed ham, pork and swiss to $15 for steak sandwich with churrasco - served with regular or sweet potato fries, plaintain chips, or a small salad. My favorite dish is the ($14) pernil asado -- succulent chunks of roasted pork that practically melt in your mouth, served with yellow rice and Cuban-style black beans.
While providing not the most authentic cuisine, Havana Central serves up large portions of Cuban favorites at reasonable prices (especially considering the location) along with tasty mojitos. Perfect for a quick bite before or after a show.
Note that Havana Central Times Square location participates in http://OpenTable.com and http://Restaurant.com.
I did not enjoy the food and drinks here at all. This place to me was a typical tourist trap. I love the Cuban food and expected much more even considering its touristy location.
I thought appetizer sampler was a joke with tiny bits of unimaginable deep fried finger foods. The Latin American stype paella valenciana and ropa vieja lacked seasoning and was very bland. The Mojito was the worst version I ever had - it tasted like it was mixed with ginger ale. Capirinha tasted very bitter for some reason. The waiter from Venezuela however was very nice and entertaining so for that I give 2 stars.
I'll never go back.
I actually enjoyed this stop. It was a nice ambiance (yes! a little chessy, but fun). The mojitos were tasty and the food was good. I have had better Cuban, but this was still good.
I don't like having to go Times Square. Wait...scratch that. I loathe going to Times Square. The only times I'll ever go is for work-related meetings/events or because I can't talk out-of-town friends or relatives out of it. I know they don't know any better so I just suck it up.
Needless to say, the last time I had friends in town they wanted to meet up for dinner near Times Square (because they were catching a show) I wasn't happy about it. I ended up making reservations at Havana Central (which was pretty easy to do on http://Opentable.com), purely because of it's proximity to the theatre they were going to. I grumbled and groaned the entire walk from the subway station to the restaurant as I weaved in and out of slow-walking groups of tourists.
I wasn't sure what to expect frmo Havana Central, because in my mind all of the restaurants within blocks from Times Square were packed to the gills with tourists attracted to their bright, shiny neon signs. In the end though, my experience at Havana Central wasn't too bad. The food was decent and it didn't have a touristy, TGIFridays/HardRockCafe/BubbaGumps vibe to it. Our waitress was also really pleasant and attentive. The place also has a full bar, which can help ease the aggravation that comes from being stuck in Times Square.
Azucar!!! For those of you who never heard the late great Celia Cruz belt that out..it means sugar in spanish! At let me just start by saying that sugar is what you will get here!
I've been here for lunch and for happy hour so I will give you 2 reviews....before you continue let me just throw it out there...this place rocks for both!
Lunch:
Went twice with a group of 10 for a co-workers b-day and once for a going away lunch. Both times..they sat us in the same place...upstairs away from the first floor. Not bad...I think we got more personalized attention that way! My lame @$$ co workers don't drink at lunch. Afraid they won't be able to handle the debits/credits and reconciliations after a few cold ones! What a bunch of crap! So I guess I will bring you up to speed on their food. Their food menu is cuban and if you've never had cuban food, just know they like alot of pork and alot of garlic! If you go in a group of 4 or more get the appetizer sampler! You can't go wrong. They give you a good amount Chorizo tostones...one empanada...but if you push them they will squeeze two empanadas on...ripe plaintains...fried chicken chunks and fried corn. All of the food on here except the corn was very tasty. As I mentioned before, its alot to sample for 4...and I think you should order one of these samplers for every 4 people in your group.
I tried the pernil asado for the main course. They serve this rice and beans and plaintains. The pork was very juicy, succulent and tasy...ummm...I an taste it again. If you aren't a pork lover there the camarones al ajillo is very tasted. Basically that is shrimp in garlic sauce. Like I said...if it aint' pork its probably garlic in your food. All of the dishes that came out had generous portions and since you get rice and beans with your meal, I can't see you leaving this place unsatisfied!
Happy Hour:
First off let me say that this place does not have your typical happy hour special. You won't find $2 buds or $3 draft specials or shot girls walking around. This place is known for their mojitos and if you don't appreciate a good mojito then maybe you won't appreciate this happy hour as much. I will be willing to bet that any mojito that you get on their menu will be tasty. I was alone in my group with that opinion however so check the menu and thick about your feelings on the different tastes. You can't go wrong however with the classic mojito. Now when I started this post I started by saying AZUCAR...again..SUGAR. I've been to many bars in manhattan and they try to serve mojitos. Ladies and gentlemen of the Yelp world...if your mojito is served to you without a sugar cane stick in tell them to take it back and give you another drink! Sugar cane is the only way to go! And this place will give it to you raw and cut right off the cane! The mint is fresh and all in all they live up to their claim as best mojito in NY!
A word of advice...don't fall for the pitcher deal. It comes out as expensive as about 4 mojitos but they will give you 4 smaller glasses with the pitcher. You'll think your getting a deal but at the end you will get about a glass and a half each which wouldn't even equal a regulalr glass.
They add a nice touch at around 8pm...this was a Friday...when they have a live salsa band. There isn't room to dance and we didn't stay past 10pm...but one would hope that as the night goes on they might get rid of some of the dinner tables and open it up to some dancing!
All in all...AZUCAR Havana Central!
Yelp hard my friends..

By now I've digested my Havana Central lunch, whisked to my desk by the good people at seamlessweb.
And I'd like nothing more than to offer 4 stars for this establishment but one overused ingredient prevents me: salt!
I ordered the classic cuban sandwich and in the realm of portions, two could easily share one.
The design and execution of the sandwich was spot on except I find myself guzzling a liter of Poland Spring water quite frequently.
The papa frites which accompanied the sandwich also suffer the same fault. Cooked well, not at all soaked in oil, robust slices of potatoes that are simply too salty.
The churros for dessert were superb, with two containers of chocolate and caramel sauce for dipping. No salt to complain about in this area.
Prior to the cuban sandwich I've also ordered the arroz con pollo and found it also strong in the salt region. Exceptionally large portion, cooked well and at a reasonable price all carry weight. So does excess salt.
I fear if I turn around in the office to look at remains of my Havana Central Lunch I'll simply turn into a pillar of salt.
Originally my friends and I were hoping to go to Margon across the street from Havana Central, but it turns out they close at 5pm (whoops). With us still wanting Cuban cuisine, we went to Havana Central and boy, compared to the small, diner like appearance of Margon, Havana Central is a full blown circus!
Despite a lot of people sitting in the waiting area, we were seated immediately, which was really cool. The waiting area has nice, comfortable seats and a couch where you can chill or if you prefer, head over to the bar area for a drink and catch up on some sports. The decor is dark but elegant and there are big palm leaves in giant vases along the walls. The place is buzzing and alive with activity and it was really an energized atmosphere to eat in.
For our appetizer, my girlfriend and I ordered the shrimp ceviche. It had a nice tang to it, but the citrus did not overwhelm the meat of the shrimp. I was also happy to see (taste?) that the onion was also not overwhelming. The ingredients balanced out perfectly and the avocado was super creamy and tasty. I had the regular Cuban sandwich, and its combination of meat and pickles were delicious on perfectly toasted bread. The sweet potato fries were awesome, just the right crunchiness and thickness to be satisfying. My friend had the vegetable paella and it was surprisingly rich in flavor considering there was no meat and there wasn't a huge layer of sauce on it at all. My girlfriend enjoyed the Mango Salmon salad which had a wonderful flavor and a delicious vinaigrette. We were very happy with our meal overall.
The service was good, not outstanding but it did start to get rather busy before we left. I kind of wonder what service would be like if the restaurant were completely packed. As we left, we noticed a live band was setting up (this was around 7:30pm) so another element of excitement was about to be added!
For something with a latin flavor and an elegant environment, head over to Havana Central.
Our hotel concierge suggested the restaurant and he was right. The quantity and quality of food were very good, as was the service and and live music. The prices are very reasonable, given the proximity to Times Square. Reservations are strongly encouraged; however, a couple next to us sat down within minutes and they were walk-ins. The meat fell off the ribs and the shrimp over saffron rice was simply yummy. I highly recommend giving the restaurant a try; you won't be disappointed. We certainly weren't and it will be one of many restaurants for dinner on our return trip to the Big Apple.
I've been here on a number of occasions (4-6 times) in the last year alone. What Havana lacks in food they make up in ambiance. The food is completely lacking- the flavors are bland. I think I've tried almost everything on the menu and the only thing I can somewhat enjoy are the mango glazed ribs (with very little meat on them btw).
However there are a few bright spots at Havana: The zesty corn is wonderful, the mojitos are perfect, the flan and other desserts are yummy as is their coffee. Also, the place is very affordable in a not so affordable area.
Wish they had a better menu but am happy I can go to a place like Havana with friends to have good drinks in a fun environment.
The food was reasonably priced if you stuck to a sandwich, but I'd probably avoid the main entrees since they were expensive. I had a Cuban sandwich on a sweet roll. The food itself wasn't the best Cuban I've ever had, but it was still decent for a chain in a very touristy spot.
Given the other options in the area, I would definitely go back here since it's decent value and food. They had a loud band playing in the restaurant as well which was kind of annoying since it's already a loud restaurant, but now people were yelling even louder to hear each other. The feel was a little too touristy to go on a weekend.
I met up with a couple of friends that I haven't seen in over 10+ years and I was so excited about going to this restaurant. We finally get there and the place was 75% empty, we ordered the sampler empanadas (chicken, beef and shrimp combo) and they were delish! Unfortunately the appetizers arrived after the food. The waiter had the only attitude, ugh. I ordered the chicken in garlic sauce, there was absolutely no flavor to it! The rice and beans were plain. Honestly I think I hyped myself up too much, because it was truly a let down. The food was not good, except for the empandas and dessert. After we ordered the tres leches dessert, which was great and a dulce de leche cheesecake, also good. We sent lots of time in the restaurant and we caught our waiter staring and rolling his eyes. Ugh!!
My boyfriend and I were going to see a Broadway show, and thought we would grab a quick bite to eat before the show. Havana Central was packed, so make sure you have a reservation. It had a fun atmosphere, our waiter was very attentive, and the food was pretty good.
On Thursday nights if you order a mojito ($12) you get a free hand rolled cigar. My boyfriend was happy (we went home with 4). :)
After wandering around the city all day, we stumbled into Havana Central on the way back to the hotel.
Ack! A tourist!
Still I knew to avoid places around Times Square but we were tired and hungry and this place looked really interesting from the menu outside. I just wanted to eat and not at a cheesy sandwich/deli type place.
We were seated at a tiny table right away and from the second we were seated, our waitress (Tanya) was hovering, but not in a bad way. If the thought crossed my mind that I wanted something, she was there. And the place was packed. Three deep at the bar and all tables full by the time our meal was over-- including the upstairs area.
We had the sampler appetizer with chorizo, tostones, an empanada, maduros and some grilled chicken. The chicken and empanada were fabulous. The tostones were good but a little too dry. Like they were reheated rather than fried freshly for the second dip in the oil. The chorizo was horrible and I feel like I have the authority to say so. (I grew up in Newark's Ironbound area-- home of the Spanish/Portuguese restaurant. I am Spanish. I know good chorizo!) HC's chorizo had a numbing, medicinal quality that was unpleasant. The rest of the appetizers made up for it.
For dinner I had the skirt steak sandwich-- churrasco-- with chimichurri and sweet potato fries. It was good. My steak was perfectly medium rare and tender, with that great beefiness that is characteristic of skirt steak. I liked it but felt like it needed something else. My boyfriend had the half rack of ribs and yellow rice. The guava glaze on the ribs was fabulous. Completely different and familiar at the same time. The ribs were cooked to perfect tenderness while retaining enough of a bite to give you that satisfying caveman feeling when eating meat from a bone.
I had a ($10) passion fruit mojito on the recommendation of our waitress. It was awesome but left me a little lightheaded. My boyfriend had the pomegranate mojito and it was good, but I liked mine better.
For dessert, I had the churros-- pretty standard. Boyfriend had the dulce de leche cheesecake and that was pretty good and unique.
I loved the decor-- very tropical feeling. My only complaint about the ambiance is that it was very, very loud.
Located on one of the side streets off of Times Square, we popped in for some drinks and realized I was still hungry from early goings on.
The place was poppin with a live band and the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves. Lacking a huge appetite, we opted for their appetizer sampler followed by their dessert sampler...as the sweet tooth was kicking in. I personally decided to add some chicken tamales for some extra grub.
My favorite piece of the appetizer sampler was the corn on the cob. Coated with parmesan cheese and other good things yummy, I couldn't wait for it to cool down. And hands down from the dessert sampler...the tres leches cake. Yummm. I also liked my chicken tamales.

A few days after my review I was contacted by the Marketing Director of Havana Central. I have upped my review by 2-stars because of her courtesy and professionalism.

We were walking through Times Square while it rained. We were getting hangry so we stopped here. This place has plenty of space and a second floor for dining, too! We shared the following :
Maduros - sweet fried plantains
Boniatos fritos - sweet potato fries
Arroz con camarones - shrimp and saffron rice
Cafe con leche
Much more on the menu we would have liked to try:
Mango salmon salad
Skirt steak churrasco and ropa vieja
Vegetarian paella
Mojito at the heart of time square.
The staff are super nice. All my friends love the experience and leave gaga over mojitos... Lol
I am a loud person. I can be deafening. At Havana Central, I couldn't hear myself bellow, let alone think. Don't worry, I already asked myself the standard, "What are you, a crusty old curmudgeon?" The answer: "WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"
The food was good. Sangria was great. Service was on point.
I hate restaurants where the music is louder than my brain.
Not THE best Cuban food, but certainly good food, and it's very well priced!
I've eaten several things there, and everything has been great with the exception of the corn on the cob w/ cheese. It's actually a bit over-seasoned and doesn't taste good at all. The best dish I've eaten there is the seafood paella.. it is DELICIOUS!! Other great dishes are the "ropa vieja," the "herb chicken," the "arroz con pollo," among many others.
The restaurant itself has a very Cuban ambiance... trust me, I know... I'm Cuban. :-) It is a great place to chill with friends and have good food.
Went there for a reunion dinner. The food was quite adequate, reasonably priced for the area but nothing special. The mojitos were okay and they were $5, so the price was right! Basically, a crowded okay place to hang out with friends, but if you're looking for great food this is not it.
Best chicken empenadas I've EVER had. Their Mojito's are off the hook too. And the live music was great at the times square location when they had it. The band had everyone in the restaurant dancing.
If you're going with a large group, MAKE A RESERVATION!! and if you're more than 2 mins late, you can guarantee you will be waiting and starving, while snacking on the front desk coconut candies. (which are also good)
felt like I was eating out in another country. I loved it! I felt like I wasn't in NY... much more on the weekday than the weekend. the salsa music on the weekend is pretty loud and the musicians are crowded over a corner.
The 3 tier sampler that came with the octopus cerviche was delicious and different. There was a seafood salad in an avocado half shell that was quite delightful with it, as well as your variety pulled meats in totanos banana cups. the shrimp with yellow rice tasted like seafood paella. 2 drinks with dinner add up fast: they are definite NY prices of 10-12 bucks each! the candy upfront is sooo good, it's like candy cane mixed with caramel and coconut or something, very tropical & hispanic.
Touristy, touristy, touristy. Food was better than expected though.
We had the sweet plantains, corn, empanadas (not fantastic), mango-glazed salmon. Enjoyed the live music. Relaxing evening after a long day out.
No. Just.....no.
We had a hankering for Cuban food and knew that we wanted to avoid the touristy Times Square area, but didn't want to venture too far away from our hotel on 53rd. We kicked around the idea of Havana Central a few times over a couple of days but kept dismissing it because of the location.
Fast forward to the last day of our trip. We had just finished a walking tour of Times Square from its beginnings and were hungry for lunch. We'd checked out of our hotel and didn't have much time before we needed to head for the airport. We knew where Havana Central was and decided to take a chance.
We ordered the sandwich de Pavo (smoked turkey) and sandwich de pollo extraordinaire (grilled chicken). Both were, ultimately, food at its most basic level but beyond basic nourishment they really weren't much. No real flavor, very bland and pretty much what one would expect from a chain such as Applebee's. Needless to say, we were very disappointed.
$5 mojito is a great value. I order it with less syrup (skinny girl mojito) so I can watch the carbs. Their food is good. The croquettes and the coconut shrimps are served hot, crunchy and they're delicious. All entrees come with a side of beans and rice - both are excellent.
The only complaint I have is that they have a very small bar area. It only seats about 6 all packed in on top of each other. During happy hour this area gets very crowded and there is nowhere to stand. Even though the restaurant area is empty, they will not seat people to sit and drink there. I have left several times because I didn't feel like standing on top of someone to enjoy a drink.
Why drive out business this way when the economy is bad ? Apparently you need to make up the revenue by offering extended happy hour so why not let patrons sit in the restaurant, get wasted on the $5 mojitos and order a bunch of apps?
I always just had drinks here which are pretty good. The red sangria is tasty and not too sweet.
I finally had some food last night. I got the ribs (surprise) and they were fat, juicy, and had great sauce (reminds me of something else I had Wednesday night).
The rice and black beans were not too salty and garlicy. My friend had the avocado salad and it was good. Some regulars and tourists. But for a Thursday at 7pm, a little too loud with the band and kiddies around. People were dancing and the space was small in that area.
I'd like to check out the 14th street location.
Yes, located in a touristy location but sometimes you just have to walk in and try the food.
I enjoyed this place the last time I went here for dinner. I ordered the empanadas and pernil asado (roasted pork) it came in a mound! A LOT OF MEAT! I would like to try the paella and ropa vieja next time. The ambiance definitely has that Cuban flair and 2 floors makes the restaurant less claustrophobic.
I appreciate the location since I work so close to this place...it allowed me to get out of work and walk over for a nice meal.
So I took my date to Havana central and we both loved it. It was our first night going out and she was impressed. The food is affordable and the atmosphere is great, The waiters are very friendly and the food is very good!, one thing I didn't kinda like was the noise. They have a live band and it was loud! But honestly its not that bad. I am definitely returning :)
I Recommend: reserve a table prior going to the restaurant.
Empanadas of all the kind they have.(Which is 4)
I really enjoyed this place. I don't care if it's the equivalent of a "chain" Cuban restaurant. Some chains have good food, like Chipotle or Starbucks. Whatever, stop judging me!
The $5 mojitos at happy hour were fantastic and I had the pork dish that "melts in your mouth," which it did. It was a lot of food too. It's REALLY noisy inside though and attracts kinda douchey people, so that's the only reason I'd take off a star. The bar looked hella popular with the after work crowd. They also couldn't find my OpenTable reservation I had made hours before (and I know it went through b/c I got a confirmation email), so that was strange. Whatever, the food/drink was good!
This place was AMAZING!!!! Was in Theater district and decided to have dinner with sum friends that are from New York. Told them I love Cuban food and I love mojitos, so Havana Central it was. I def recommend you get the sampler of appetizers. You will NOT be disappointed. For dinner I ended up getting the 1/2 chicken and ribs glazed in their sauce with rice and black beans and man was I REALLY tryin to finish it all after a couple mojitos! Even with a Full stomach I couldn't resist. The food was soooo good and it was nice having live music in the background
We love this place. Anytime we are in the city we try to shoot over to it and get a bite.
The mojitos are a bit pricy ($10) during non-happy hour times but they are tastey and unique and very fresh.
The Platains are always outstanding and the dishes we have had there always impress. The flavors are always on point. We have not had a bad experience yet (we have been there 4 times). The service is great, and music is alive, the colors and ambiance of the bar and the restaruant are outstanding. If you are in the Theater district/near Times Square, pop in!
Been here twice as i give everything a second chance. Unfortunate for me it just confirmed my initial experience. Food (ribs way too sweet, margaritas had no ummph) was horrible, service was your typical TGIF/Applebees always trying to make up for messups by buying drinks or dessert. Only good thing is the live latin music.
Go across 46 St on the same block to Margon's - if they're still open. Authentic Cuban food at half the price and service with a smile.
