I'm originally from the Dallas area but have lived in Chicago for quite sometime now. I am always seeking out a good 'ol Southern restaurant up North....and just like trying to find good Mexican food up here I often time fail! So when I came to Dallas for a visit I was dying to eat the things I was missing.
While Yelping I came across Hattie's and am SO glad I did! Before even trying their food you're already feasting your eyes on their minimalistic yet charming stylings while enjoying witty conversation with their bartender. The bar is strategically located right as you enter the restaurant and is quaint while still remaining fully stocked!
The food was a huge hit as well! My table enjoyed the Fried Green Tomatoes, fried chicken and a pasta and shrimp dish (the chefs special). Everything was cooked impeccably the service was attentive and the atmosphere very southern chic!
Try this place out, it was a delight!
Before I start complaining about seemingly insignificant things, let me emphasize that this restaurant is REALLY good. I just feel that the coveted 5 star rating should be reserved for the near flawless establishment.
MEATLOAF: 4 stars. The mushroom gravy literally gave me goosebumps when I first tasted it! The mashed potatoes were perfect and the seasonal vegetables were a nice side. However, the meatloaf lacked a little something that prevented it from rising above the gravy. I found myself drooling over the gravy and just using the meatloaf to soak it up. At times I even forgot that there was meatloaf. All I wanted was the gravy.
TOMATO SOUP: 4 stars. Delicious, but Zupa's tomato basil is better. Also, it was frustrating to receive a half gallon bowl of soup with a mini grilled cheese sandwich the size of a pack of cards. What a tease!
MAC & CHEESE: 5 stars. I'm not huge mac & cheese guy but this stuff was good. But be careful. It is so rich that after 3 bites you may regret the commitment you just made to a whole plateful.
PORK CHOP WITH APPLE GLAZE: 3 stars. Eh. Good but somewhat forgettable.
CARAMELIZED ONION AND CHEDDAR TART: 4 stars. I know it sounds gross but it tasted amazing. The caramelized onions steal the show on this plate.
SHRIMP AND GRITS: 3 stars. I don't care for grits but these ones tasted pretty good. The bacon pan sauce makes this plate. But I'm only giving it 3 stars because the plate only comes with 5 or 6 shrimp on it. Lame.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Hattie's was really good. The restaurant is a little loud, but the service is fantastic. I'll probably go back for lunch some time so I can try their sandwiches.
Hattie's....the classy date night restaurant of the OC. I think Hattie's is marvelous. (Gee, haven't used that word in a while).
Everything I've ever tasted has been absolutely delicious. DELICIOUS I TELL YOU! I've eaten here a few times for lunch and a couple times for dinner. The pecan crusted catfish with mashed potatoes (you had me at mashed), and the tomato bisque soup with mini grilled cheese, seriously should be illegal. Not kidding. The wine selection is very thorough, don't be afraid to ask the waiter for recommendations. I once noticed this wine from Chile that I heard of but wasn't sure if I wanted it....so, he brought me a small glass. It was delicious and we ended up ordering a bottle. I mean, this my friends is classy service.
Few pieces of advice. If you plan on going on a weekend, def make a reservation or you'll be waiting a while. When you walk up the host immediately says "reservation?" and if you say "no" he frowns and goes "I'm so sorry, but its gonna be a while". I mean at least he's honest. A lot of places will say, oh 20, 30 minutes then you end up waiting 2 hrs. Good thing...the bar is situated in the waiting area, so you can def get your drink on. Strong Pour. Lovely.
The inside has a chic old southern feel, small, but classic looking. The patrons vary in age mid-20s to fabulous oldies. It can get loud but, whenever I'm in there, people always seem so jolly and full of life. Good times are had by all. Like I said, great date night place. I always feel like we're in our own little bubble when we go. Sweet.
You won't be disappointed, and if you are, I will personally take the blame. I really have nothing negative, hence my 5 stars. It makes me wary to just throw the 5 stars out there, but I feel my instinct is right. So there you have it kids...dig in!
Oh Hattie, you Southern belle you! I have been back and forth for a week now, debating on whether you deserve the 5 or not. But for now, I am safely sticking with the 4.
Hatties is a frickin great restaurant. Period. It's beautiful inside, the service is great and the food is outstanding. I think the only thing that, for now, is holding me back from the 5 is I have yet to find that to-die-for entree, which is necessary to complete a 5 star meal.
That is not to say there are not some things here that ARE to-die for. Let me break it down:
1) Face-melting items:
Four Cheddar Mac and Cheese (so big, so rich, so amazing)
Tomato Bisque (easily the best in the city)
Carmelized Onion and Cheddar Tart with Sweet Onion Marmalade
(OK, so the Mac and Cheese and Onion tart are on the "entree" section of the menu, but I really feel they are out of place there. Eating that entire bowl of mac and cheese is like the drink-a-jug-of-milk-in-an-hour challenge and should not be attempted alone. Just my opinion)
2) Rock-solid items
Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf (The mushroom sauce will have you sneaking off to a corner to lick the plate).
Fried Green Tomatoes
Low Country Shrimp and Grits (the Tabasco bacon pan sauce is the rock star in this dish)
Like I said, this place is so close to the Fiver, but I am holding out to find that perfect entree and then it is a shoe-in. I've still got high hopes for the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, so we shall see.

Very cute restaurant, bright and charming. Affable owner who tells jokes.
Good food, but ... not many healthy options.
No mimosa special for brunch, so watch out when ordering.
Full Bar.
I may upgrade this place to 4 stars depending on my second experience.
Probably one of my most favorite restaurants in Dallas (when I can afford it). Between the atmosphere, friendly staff and amazingly tasty dishes I'm' hooked.
The food is a bit of home-style cooking infused with different takes depending on the chefs creative taste buds.
Perhaps why I can never seem to eat here enough is the menu is always different. Paired with the right drink and dessert your evening can be complete within a few hours inside their lovely restaurant.
Went to Hatties last night for a birthday dinner. There were six of us total. When I made the reservation the man explained to me that there was no spilt checks and a 20% grat would be added to parties of six or more...totally fine with me. I'm not sure if the service was slow because he knew he was getting his 20% or he was just slow. Don't get me wrong, the service was good...just a little slow.
The decor is very simple with white walls and a few pictures. Our reservation was at 7 on a Wednesday and they weren't crowded at all. It was a little loud as others said. Seems like your voice really bounces off the walls.
On to the food...They offer you ONE slice of I think sourdough bread when you are seated. My boyfriend asked for more and then he complained to me when they just gave him one more piece..lol. I ordered a cup of the tomato soup. Really really good. The cup was a lot too. I ordered the pecan crusted catfish and a side of the mac and cheese. All very good...I think the mac and cheese was my favorite though! He got the pork chop. He said it was the best pork chop that he ever had. Everyone seemed really pleased with their orders too. I was a little disappointed that they didn't do anything for my friends birthday. I made sure to mention it when I made the reservation. He said he made a note....So I'm not sure if they do anything for birthdays or not...or maybe our slow server just forgot.
Yumyumyum! My husband asked where we should go for my b-day dinner, and I opted for a b-day lunch so we could treat our family to a lovely meal without murdering our bank account. Hattie's it is!
I love the decor here. It was afternoon, so the place was filled with natural, bright light. It's a classic, southern style: high ceilings, bright white walls, subdued decor. The tables were comfortable, and they got us started right away with banana bread and bloody mary's. A good start, I might add.
I had the Low Country Shrimp over Cheddar Grits with a Tabasco Pan Gravy. It was heavenly. I could barely eat a third of it, though, it was massive. My helpful husband finished it off after devouring his Chicken and Waffles (they're everywhere these days!). I also nibbled at my daughters mac and cheese which was hot, rich and creamy with just the right amount of cheesiness.
We finished up with coffee and key lime tart, and I left happy, stuffed and not too much poorer. Service was spot on. I can't wait to come back for dinner!
Back to lunch at Hattie's and again am in looooove with this place. Love the fancy grandma decor, love the super nice waiter, love the food.
This time we started with the mac and cheese as an appetizer. A little runny at the outset but the cheese thickened up a bit and was creamy delicious. I still don't like the little onion bits in there but it is easy to pick them out. Then I had such a huge dilemma on what to get for my entree. Ham and brie sandwich on raisin bread? Tomato soup? Fried chicken? Meatloaf? Nah...not once I saw on the menu the ONE THING I CANNOT turn down no matter what. Pulled pork sandwich. With a mustardy sauce on top. It was juicy and almost too big to fit in my mouth (that's what she said...if you're lucky). I ended up eating it with a knife and fork because it was so big it fell out of my hand and juice was dripping down my arms (snicker). The sweet potato fries were the BOMB I tell ya. They have the BEST sweet potato fries.
You can't go wrong here, you just can't. Get yourself down to the Cliff and get a Southern food fix at Hattie's.

You know it's going to be a great meal when you call 30 minutes before and they say they'll be glad to save a table for you (and on a Tuesday night!) When my husband and I arrived, we had to wait about 10 minutes, which gave us time to slurp down a delicious very cold martini, made just right!
When we were seated in the lovely, unpretencious, but homey, classy dining room, our waiter began the evening of being "just right"....not too pushy, not too distant, just right.
I started with the figs stuffed with blue cheese and pecans and wrappe d in bacon and broiled....delicious! They made my tongue sing!!! My hubby's fried oysters were nice, as well. FOr entrees, we had grits and shrimp and the quail.....all fabulous. Loved the setting, loved the service, loved the food.....can't think of anything I'd change!
OVERLY DISAPPOINTED. First we arrive and although the restaurant is half empty it takes us about 10 min to get seated. Then although we were greeted by the water/bread guy who did a GREAT job, we were ignored by the waiter for another 10 min.
The menu was different than what was published online, which was disappointing because I was looking forward to the fried green tomato sandwich as advertised. They still had one on the menu but it was completely different. I had them take off the bacon and ordered it with sweet potato fries. The hubby ordered the mac and cheese.
After finally ordering it took about 25 min to get the food, with the waiter only coming over to take all of our silverware--which annoys me, because although I ordered a sandwich there is no guarantee that I will not need my knife thank you.
The food on both ends was bland. Definitely not worth the calories. I was incredibly disappointed since Hattie's has gotten a lot of hype from other yelpers and friends of mine. Although not terrible, there is nothing memorable.
I'll try to be brief since there are already tons of reviews. I've only been twice. Both times for brunch. I loved it, even though the fried chicken breast on their Chicken and Waffles was really bland.
Hattie's is not the place for you if you're counting calories or pennies. I've had wonderful service both times I've gone. The coffee is great (just drip, no espresso).
I'm definitely a repeat customer!
Fabulous! Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Dallas. We keep going back and going back. I travel a lot and have dined in some of the finest (and worst) restaurants in the county. Hattie's is one of the best in the US. They are so good, I had them cater a holiday party in my home. Extraordinary!
I went here on a Saturday night with a group of 4. We had reservations, which is a good thing: walk-up traffic was being turned away. This place is busy.
There is a good selection of food items, ranging from very modestly priced up to some higher-dollar options if you are so inclined. You can get out the door relatively inexpensively, or spluge a bit and have an impressive tab. Either way, I don't think you would be disappointed.
Service wasn't the friendliest, but was professional and things arrived in a timely fashion. The food was outstanding with most portions being sizeable -- no real need for dessert. Drinks were also quite good.
The only negatives were the loud dining room (it is very open with high ceilings and hard surfaces), which makes it hard to hear conversation across the table. The service could have been a bit more cordial, but it could very well have just been our particular server on that day. Otherwise, this place is very good and I would certainly return and recommend to others.
I've been on a search for the best "Mac & Cheese" in Dallas for a few weeks now... after the review in the 'weekend guide' from the DMN, I had to pack up my stuff for a road trip to The Cliff.
Lunch on Friday, shortly after high noon, was seated graciously by the host within a few minutes. I couldn't help but notice the very southern (I'm not talking trailer park, either) decor, white table cloths, and handsome waiters. This was turning out to be better than expected....
Darren was our handsome server. He confirmed they have the best Mac & Cheese in Dallas! That being said, we indulged in both Mac & Cheese entree and a chicken salad dish, to share.
Darren was very attentive, but not pushy. The Mac & Cheese was unbelievable... I'd have it again.
You can't go wrong with Hattie's for lunch. If you don't choose the Mac & Cheese, there's plenty of interesting dishes, sure to wet your appetite!
Flawless. The recent meal I had at Hattie's was the most delicious, inspired meal I've had in over a year. I've dined in some of the best restaurants in NY, SF and LA and Hattie's beat them in terms of the level of service and attention to detail at every level. The three one-of-a-kind dishes you should order are: the blue cheese pie, jelly and poached pear appetizer, the low country shrimp and grits entrée, and the fried pie and coconut ice cream dessert. YUM!
Great food! Great neighborhood! Great drinks! check it out!
Though southern cooking is not my main "go to" cuisine, every now and then I get a craving for homey, fried, fatty, goodness and Hattie's has sated that need on several occasions now. Fried green tomato appetizer - nice! Shrimp and grits - tasty! Favorite entree so far? The jalapeno stuffed quail - the quail was quite good, but the sides of sweet potato mash and braised greens were fantastic! (and if, like me, you aren't a huge jalapeno fan, no prob, just pull it out, it is one whole pepper in the quail cavity) They also have a blue cheese cheesecake appetizer with jam that is truly outstanding.
There are a few misses on the menu - the proscuitto wrapped figs are not great (despite ingredients that I usually love) and the crab cakes are so-so (but after living in Maryland, I am a crab cake snob). And the oysters, which really should be a mainstay in southern restaurants, were over cooked.
I want to go back for breakfast/brunch..... looks sinful!
THREE WORDS:
FRIED. GREEN. TOMATOES. Being a native Arkansan, I practically went from milk to cheerios to fried green tomatoes. Most restauraunts it's more fried than tomatoes. Not Hatties, these green babies were thick and delicious with enough friedness to make your heart hurt. I was sad to see them leave my plate, but the rest of the meal was supberb.
I had the shrimp and grits, which was pretty good if you like grits. I love shrimp and I love grits, but I think I would perfer the two seperate. My friend had the lamb chops and they were goodness embodied. The meat was tender and was cooked perfectly.
The cocktails were mixed perfectly, the waiter was ok. It felt like he was auditioning for a movie the entire time he waited on us. I don't think there was a camera in the restaurant, but maybe this guy just loved his job sooo much?
With food this good, I guess I would too! :)
There's not much that I can say about Hattie's that hasn't already been said. It's casual enough that you'd feel comfortable coming in jeans, but nice enough to be a fantastic place for a first (or hundredth) date.
On to the food!
I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and tasso ham gravy.
Borat like.
It was a boneless chicken breast that had been flattened, battered, and fried to perfection. Frying chicken isn't hard (if you're as good as I am--you know it's true, don't trip), but getting a perfectly colored and crunchy exterior while keeping a pounded breast perfectly moist and tender is as hard as Ashton Kutcher is when he sees Demi's girls around the pool in their bikinis.
The only problem that I had with the tasso gravy was that there wasn't enough of it. While my stomach is screaming for more, my heart is saying a big thank you.
The other great thing about lunch was the price. Including the mandatory grat for 6 or more people, I ate a fantastic lunch for $12.
The other fools I went to lunch went had the following: Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich; the fried green tomato sandwich, the Country Club, & the sirloin burger.
Believe me when I say that ANY of the sandwiches were large enough to split and make both parties full as a mug. They were big (how big were they?) They was so big they had they own area code, just like yo momma.
Make sure you visit the facilities to check out the dope ass sinks too. I think I'm going to get those faucets for my bathroom.
Yuck.
I'll keep it short because there are about a million reviews on this establishment.
Its a nice looking restaurant. I went for dinner and it was very bright. Nothing intimate about the dining room, its kind of like eating in an Albertson's, just without the shelves. I'd prefer the set up for lunch.
Our server was rude, and he was sweating which was kind of gross. It took him forever between rounds of drinks. The real problems began when the entrees arrived though.
Sun-Dried Tomato stuffed chicken was almost too salty to eat. Its almost like the chef was punking us (and I'm not salt-sensitive). If you could stomach the salinity of the thing, what was waiting for you was over-cooked, dry chicken, with a filling that tasted like vomit. This was singly handedly one of the worst dishes I've ever been served in a restaurant.
The shrimp with grits and goat cheese with red sauce started out OK. Everything was cooked right, and it tasted fine, then I ate the third shrimp on the plate. It tasted like I had bitten into a condom filled with iodine. It was nasty. So bad that I couldnt finish my meal. I just had to stop right there and then.
Went to Hatties for dinner. Stopped at Whataburger on the way home to eat. Gross.
Stopped in Hattie's for lunch on a Friday with a friend, and it was packed! However, we were still seated right away. Note that you can get away with being dressed a little more casually if you come here for lunch -- I was in jeans and didn't feel out of place at all.
Everything on the menu was so tempting. I totally wanted to start with the tomato soup + mini grilled cheese but really wasn't that hungry, unfortunately. So instead, I just ordered the chicken salad sandwich. Granted, it was absolutely delicious, but I've had chicken salad with golden raisins before -- not incredibly unique. Still, I was definitely happy with my decision. My friend got the crab cake with field greens (under "entree salads" on the menu), and I tasted a bite of her crab cake. Again, mouth-wateringly good, but nothing I hadn't tasted before.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was ordering the pecan-crusted catfish. We watched one table of four have four catfish delivered to them. Is it really that good?? Who knows...maybe I'll have to come back and try it sometime.
I think that the main appeal of Hattie's is that it's an upscale dining locale where everything on the menu is (gasp) reasonably priced. I mean, that catfish dish is only $13 -- even on the dinner menu! Considering that you could probably get a similar dish at Stephan Pyles' for about $40, that's a huge plus for Hattie's.
What more needs to be said...I agree with it all 100%
Beautiful decor on the inside. It's stylishly-simple. The food is so tasty, too!! Appetizers are awesome and I like the "pumped up" version of some old classics: Meatloaf and the Fried Catfish!!!
This will be the first place I eat at when I move back to Dallas! MUST GO!
The hubby and I came here last night for a belated V-Day dinner. Of course like old folks we were there a little past 5:30 so we were the only one there.
I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and veggies. It was delicious. I had a few bites of my husband's mac and cheese and omg it was delicious! Better than Kenny's.
I can give the extra star b/c I sincerely love their decor. Just classy and warm.
The thing that hit it big last night was their special dessert: Fried rhubarb filled pie with coconut ice cream and raspberry drizzle. HOLY COW, it was awesome. Just awesome.
Yeah, Hatties is a winner in my book.

I would say that if you haven't had an amazing meal at Hattie's you must go back and try it again. I have eaten there for lunch and brunch several times ( but I had forgotten about it for several months) so I knew it was good but my sister and her friend took me there for dinner on Thursday to celebrate my birthday and it was unforgettably scrumptious. We started with the fried green tomatoes and the fried oysters, both of which were nearly perfect. We then shared two salads between the three of us. I ordered the red and gold roasted beet salad with arugula and goat cheese...can I just say I did not want to share! I think the other salad was a caesar but I have to admit I did not taste it...the girls said it was super tasty but I was distracted by my salad. Our next course was the entree and I had the mac and cheese, my sister had the pecan crusted catfish and our friend had the shrimp and grits. We all agreed the mac and cheese was some of the best we had ever had. When it first came to the table it was a little soupy but it set up quickly and it had the perfect crunch on the top and cheesy goodness inside. It went around the table several times. The catfish was cooked perfectly and the taste was sublime. I love that it came with fresh steamed veggies, too. The shrimp and grits, which is my fave dish here and I have ordered it more than once, did not disappoint. One mouthful starts a chain reaction that doesn't stop til the dish is done. By this time you can imagine that we were extremely full of food and I did not think I could eat another bite but when our server (who was very professional, by the way and has waited on me before with the same consistently good service) told me about the homemade fried pie with coconut ice cream I was sold, and it was exactly what I hoped it would be, flaky crust sweet and tart fruity filling and the ice cream was a beautiful thing. Thank you Hattie's for a great birthday meal! I won't forget about you ever again!
I do want to mention the actual physical space...the decor is a blend of vintage and contemporary elements that I find very beautiful and the Southern lowcountry touches ( the pale yellow, white, and blue color scheme and the colossal china cabinet) really complement the menu. I did notice on this visit (the restaurant was packed and I was glad we had made a reservation) that the noise level was really high. There was a party of 8-10 seated next to us at a banquette that were really whooping it up (can you say kamikaze shots, anyone? I guess the eighties really are back in style) so that might have been the reason it was so loud but we did have to raise our voices a bit to hear each other at our small four top. It wasn't bad enough to be distracting but I realize it might bother someone else so I thought I'd mention it.
Oh wow, Hattie's was an experience I won't forget. The food was fantastic! We went on a Saturday evening at 630 and the restaurant was already starting to get busy. We had a reservation, but still had to wait a few minutes to be seated, but this gave us time to appreciate the beautiful setting in the cozy lobby. The black chairs were gorgeous and I loved the candlelight.
After being seated (in white chairs of course) we ordered the fried green tomatoes based on the other reviews here. I've never had fried green tomatoes before and they were yummy!
I ordered the Low Country Grits with Shrimp and my husband ordered the Pulled Pork (his sides were grits and greens). The grits were so good!! Creamy and not grainy at all - so good!!
I had a few bites of my husbands dish and loved the greens - they were yummy. The sweet onion marmalade on the pork was delicious and was a great accompaniment to the meat.
We both ordered dessert - I ordered the Key Lime Pie and he ordered the Molten Chocolate Cake. His tasted great, but mine was absolutely superb! I can still remember exactly how good it tasted.
We had a great experience at Hattie's and it is definitely on our "must eat again" list.
I love Hattie's! It's one of my favorite Dallas restaurants - and there are only a handful even though I grew up in Dallas.
The service is always great whenever I go - very attentitve and helpful, and the food is delicious! The fried green tomato is my favorite appetizer and I have to get it whenever I go. Think an upscale version of down home cooking.
Whenever people ask me for a good restaurant in Dallas, I always suggest Hattie's.
Went to Hattie's for the first time this past Friday. Had to wait 30 minutest to get a table...which wasn't bad because i didnt have reservations. Tried the fried green tomatoes for the an apetizer...i could have made them better myself...there was no flavor and they poured ranch dressing on top of them as the sauce...im sure the chef could have created a better condiment than ranch dressing for what 5 slices of tomatos cost.
For dinner i order the lamb chops, which came with greens and mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce for the lamb. The only thing on my plate with flavor was the cranberry sauce. I had to put salt and cranberry sauce on everything just so i could taste the food. I was totally dissapointed. This place is over priced for the how the food tastes. Will definately not be going back
Oh Hattie's...where do I begin? I had a hot date for the night (a rarity in ChrisWorld) so I figured I should do it up right. I made reservations for the date for a Friday evening. When we got in, they sat us immediately. I like that. It sucks the cool right out of the sails when you roll in like a billy bad ass with reservations and you have to sit and wait anyway.
So we get in to sit down and the tables are nice, a little candle...Damn I'm smooth. I sit across from her and suddenly I realize "Jesus Christ! It is loud in here" So loud that I couldn't hear my date across the table, I actually had to move and sit next to her just to be able to strain to talk. Not smooth.
Then there was the service...the guy was friendly but left us alone just too long for a restaurant of this price. It's nice if you're on a date and the both of you are a little nervous/shy for the waiter to come in and break the nervousness a little. This guy didn't really help.
When our appetizer arrived...WOW. The crabcake was amazing. It was the best crabcake I've ever had, and it impressed my date too. Score. Our main courses were great too, she had the salmon and said it was the best salmon she's ever had. I got the 4 cheddar cheese macaroni.
Let me settle this once and for all....Hattie's four cheddar mac n cheese crushes Kenny's Wood Fired Grill's Adult Mac N Cheese, and beats the Porch's mac n cheese hands down. Hattie's wins. They have that awesome mac n cheese crust on top, and was just incredible. I hope I've been clear here. It was the best part of the meal.
Unfortunately the date and I didn't quite find our groove. Damn gold diggers wantin' nice meals...I deserve a hug or somethin! What a disaster of a date.
Overall, the noisiness of the place, combined with the less that stellar service kind of soured the amazing food a little bit. If I could I would give them a 3.5 but the great food pressed it up to a 4. Maybe if I come back here and have a great date we'll give 'er 5 stars. I'm going to come back here another time and see if it's a better experience when it's not a Friday night.
Yay, finally made it to Hattie's! There's nothing I can add to the reviews already posted, but I can second the thumbs up to the mac and cheese and the ambiance. It's sleek and casual, classy but not stuffy. Great for a date as well as a night out when the parents are in town.
It can be a little pricey, but entrees range from $15-35 so it's easy to please every budget. We had a fabulous bottle of wine that was not the most expensive but not the cheapest either, which was actually recommended by our waiter. It was nice that he didn't try to upsell when we asked for a recommendation.
Food and service were great, definitely want to go back. I only wish Hattie's was closer!
I loved this place. We had reservations on a Friday night and were seated right away. The restaurant is bright and homey and the food was delicious. We started with the fig appetizer which was very good. My entree was the stuffed chicken with smoked mozarella, sundried tomatos and greens. My husband's pork chop was also very good. A bit on the sweet side, but still good. We ended with the grapefruit sorbet. A perfectly refreshing ending on a hot summer night.
Three words on this one, folks: Mac.....and.....Cheese!!!!!!!!
Okay. Just a few more words. It's the best mac and cheese in the history of mac and cheese. Also try the caramelized onion tart. Dreamy, cozy, quiet atmosphere. This place is a keeper!
We hit up Hattie's Friday night because once I looked at the menu online, I knew I had to try their fried green tomatoes...and they didn't disappoint!
We had never been down to the Bishop Arts District and we were pleasantly surprised, once we drove through some interesting parts of town, when we got down there. The street itself was bustling with the night life of frequent visitors. Although we had a relatively late arrival (around 7:30 p.m.), we were seated quickly (I did make a reservation beforehand), and the place was relatively empty.
As I mentioned earlier, we tried the fried green tomatoes, along with prosciutto wrapped figs. I enjoyed the former more than the latter. Per our entrees, I ordered the sundried tomato and mozzarella stuffed chicken breast, while the others at my table ordered the salmon and pecan crusted catfish.
My dish came along with a healthy serving of lentils, which has the most astounding flavor I've ever tasted in my life. The chicken was...chicken and not something I'd especially ever order again. After a while, the scent coming off of the lentils, though initially enticing, started to make me ill and I couldn't wait until the waiter came and removed our plates. For dessert, we tried the chocolate coconut pie... it was delicious, but not as creamy as I'd hoped it would be. My friend ordered the key lime pie, which was out of this world. I'd go back just for another slice of that baby.
All in all, a good dining experience, but I probably won't go again unless someone asks me to join them there.
Looking for something different to do outside of our Lakewood/Downtown lifestyle, last night we drove down to Bishop Arts District for a 6:30 reservation at Hattie's.
The bar and waiting area is small but really nice with comfortable looking chairs and a neat old bar. The bartender was making drinks behind the bar and we were greeted by the host. The restaurant only had a few tables of diners so we were shown right to our seat but I could see having to wait in this cute area wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. The whole restaurant had this modern yet southern charm.
We were shown to our table and the host pulled my chair out for me. After I sat, he discreetly took away my silverware that was wrapped in a white linen napkin and replaced it with silverware wrapped in a black napkin. I was wearing black pants... which they must have seen when I walked in and thought to replace my white linen napkin with a black one. Wow.
We sat down and decided to get 2 appetizers to split, the Fried Green Tomatoes (with AMAZING ranch dressing on top) and the pruscitto wrapped figs with blue cheese and walnut stuffing. Both were awesome. The fried green tomatoes had a cornmeal crust and were fried but not greasy at all. My dad also got the wedge salad... it had blue cheese, crisp pruscitto and small slivers of fried onion on top. Aaah. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and settled in.
For our main courses, amongst the five of us, we had the pecan crusted catfish, butcher block pork chop, pulled pork, and I got the special of scallops sitting on a bed of leek risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly. It's rare you get perfectly cooked scallops... these had a nice sear on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. The risotto was okay... not very flavorful and I think could have been cooked just slightly longer. The al dente was borderline crunch. On top of the scallops was a small flurry of crisp leek. That was really nice-- the saltiness of the leek help to balance the rest of the dish, but I wish there was more leek flavor in the risotto itself.
Everyone else really liked their meals also. The pecan crusted catfish was amazing, and being on a bed of (awesome!) mashed potatoes was different. The pulled pork was cooked really nicely. It had caramelized onion marmalade on top that really helped balance the pork. We also got the famed four cheese macaroni and cheese for a side. Aaaaah. Make sure you get this when you come. It kind of felt like a $5 shake because it's $10 mac and cheese... but so worth it.
For dessert, we had a fried peach pie and port. By this time, the restaurant was completely full with a full bar. Hattie's being awesome is apparently NOT a secret, but you still feel like you've definitely found something special when you're there.
Hattie's has good food. With a side of loud. It's really loud. It wouldn't be good for a first date unless you want to stare at the person and communicate telepathically. If you could talk and hear each other, you would say:
Spiffy decor.
Cool bathroom sink.
Mmmmm. Yummy macaroni.
Yay, more bread!
Cool, fried green tomato sandwich.
The cocktails are good. My mom is a fan of the Texas cosmopolitan made with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
Another plus? There's cute shopping- lots of unique shops, including a soda pop store with international brands.
In my talk thread looking for some Dallas help (
http://www.yelp.com/to...) Hattie's was mentioned for having some delicious mac 'n cheese. And guess what it does!
We walk in and we weren't really dressed for Hattie's but it was lunch time so I didn't really care. We are seated at a nice table for two, and I notice everything is very sleek and clean but with a southern twist to it.
We order two ice teas while we read the menu, granted I knew what I wanted their mac 'n cheese; I'm not the self proclaimed Queen of mac 'n cheese for nothing. Out of no wear the bread boy appears and we each have a slice of bread. The waiter reappears to take our order mac 'n cheese for me, he asks would you like shrimp or chicken added, my mouth started watering and I said yes please shrimp. My side kick went with the fried chicken salad with buttermilk dressing.
My mac 'n cheese is placed before me and it looks divine (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) I can't wait to dig in. It has that homemade look and with the four gulf prawns it looked like heaven on a plate for me. I dig in and it's one of the best mac 'n cheese I've ever had, the baked crispiness on top mixed with the green onions inside and the four cheddar cheeses melted together I couldn't have asked for anything better.
Fried chicken salad was looked like a piece of art (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The chicken was wonderful no make that excellent, very flavorful no fat or gristle on it. The avocado was buttery and delicious and the dressing was outstanding.
If you're a lady and you're here check out the ladies room, it's a one room stale but I liked it. It's a bit on the dark side but it was very clean and fully stocked with a cute faucet (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) that does look a little phallic but it's cute.
The food was amazing and the décor was perfect on the other hand our waiter was just a little meh, he gave off the impression that he didn't care we were there for lunch. I guess my expectations of the wait staff here was just too high but their food more than made up for it.
This restaurant is a must-visit.
A mix of classic and contemporary southern atmosphere surround you while you enjoy an eclectic mix of southern favorites. But wait. This isn't your grandma's meatloaf... No, hers was never this sophisticated and delicious. In fact, fuck grandma. She has nothing on this place.
The food is familiar yet elegant - with traditional dishes embellished in ways you've probably never imagined. Try the jalapeno-stuffed quail! If you have it as an appetizer the first time, you will have it as an entree the next -- guaranteed.
The tomato bisque is smooth and creamy with a delicious mini grilled cheese playfully notched on to the lip of the bowl. There isn't a better tomato soup in Dallas.
And the mac and cheese.

So good. It's the holy grail of mac and cheese. Best in Dallas -- and I've been everywhere that serves it. Better than Perry's, Hibiscus, The Ritz or anywhere else. It's Dallas' favorite little "ironically elegant" side and no one does it better than Hattie's. This is a place I take my out-of-town friends and in-town friends alike. It's pricey, but worth it.
This is a place where you will see dressed-up black women in big hats after church, you will see families with young children celebrating milestones in their lives, you will see young couples on first dates, you will see grandmas having a luncheon and you will see emo kids at brunch after last night's show. It's for anyone with taste. Do you have taste? Then You will love it.
The service is helpful and has just the right amount of presence.
The only downside is that you have to traverse the ghetto to get to the restaurant. But hey, you don't get to buried treasure unless you grab a shovel and start digging.
Bottom line:
The food and service are amazing and there is nowhere like it in Dallas. Applies flair and much-needed elegance to a genre of food that Black-Eyed-Pea ruined. This is a "best of" pick for me. It will be for you too. 5 stars. I'd give it one more if I could.
Hattie's. It's how I learned there was an area of Dallas called Bishop Arts District. Yet somehow, it was the absolute last restaurant in BAD that I decided to check out - and definitely not a disappointment. Given Hattie's central location on Bishop Ave, it's a hard place to miss. Every time I walked by, I promised to make a trip to Hattie's.
As much fun as Hattie's is for a Saturday night dinner, it's the perfect establishment for a dressy casual date night or dinner with friends on a weeknight. The interior is simply decorated, yet sophisticated. During the daytime, the restaurant is awash with light and at night, the restaurant seems to glow. The white on black tile floor at the back section of Hattie's is a great throwback to the roaring 20's and the charming sink design in the bathrooms will make you want to stay a little bit longer. The best way to describe the interior is modern Southern sophisticate.
The food is definitely not a laughing matter here. Unless of course it's when you open up the check at the end of the meal and you realize that you just spent less than $100 for a dinner for two with two glasses of wine, two appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert. Yes, very reasonably priced for the quality and artistry of food that you get. The bacon wrapped mission figs were delicious, but the cornmeal crusted oysters definitely stole the show. Because there were too many things on the menu I wanted, I left it up to the chef to select my entree and wine pairing. While I wasn't thrilled with getting the rainbow trout with crab stuffing because I really wanted a meat dish last night, I have to admit the dish was very good. I need some lessons from the chef at Hattie's on how to cook rainbow trout because mine don't come remotely close. The bacon wrapped quail with sweet potato mash and greens that my dinner companion ordered really pulled at my heart. Oh so delicious. I enjoy quail, but it's normally served on the bone so it's always a pain to eat, but here, they wrap boneless breasts inside the bacon so it's not only easy to eat, but also extremely juicy. For dessert, the key lime tart with cream did not disappoint - probably one of the best I've sampled in Dallas.
I so want to give Hattie's a 5 star, but I just can't - not yet. A few things tugged at my heart. First off, I didn't order what I really wanted to eat, but that's what you get when you leave it up to the chef to choose. Second, the service was satisfactory, but our waiter felt cold and distant, almost a bit haughty to me. I expected a bit more of a warmer reception given the Southern heritage of the restaurant. Third, the extremely vocal and annoying baby dining with his parents by our table threw us off kilter until they finally left. I will definitely be back to reevaluate - and try the mac and cheese, fried green tomatoes, and pork chops!
I really like Bishop Arts but for some reason Hatties has just never done it for me. I have lots of friends who love the place. If I am going to go to Bishop Arts for dinner I would rather go to Tillmans, Veracruz or even Enos before Hatties even though I am not a huge Enos fan either. I feel like Hatties is one of those places everyone talks about and it is cool to like but I guess I am just on the outside. Or maybe it is just that I spent enough time in the south that it confuses me to go to a nicer restaurant for shrimp and grits even though I love shrimp and grits.
Oh my goodness, I loved this place
Just went the other day because I work in the ghetto Oakcliff but went to lunch w/ the brother of the lady I work for and it is soooo adorable. I love the front area and if they put some black & white pictures up like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra then it would really make it warmer.
The bar is sooo adorable
I don't care for the mirrors while you eat and the long booth but other than that it is simply perfect.
Very "Old Fashion" sort of in a modern way, the food was good and the service was good except our waiter I had to put in place just a tad because he kept rushing us a bit as well as not really there so since it was a late lunch I thought he might be needing to go so I mentioned he most likely wants to close up so he can get out before two so that changed his tone because he was like noooo you know how they do and then he slowed his role a bit.
I appreciate the place and to be honest would love to go in the evening for a little cocktail hour w/ girlfriends. So fun LUV IT!!!
Came here for brunch and was pretty impressed overall. We were greeted with homemade sourdough and banana bread to start which were both really really good. One person ordered the chicken and waffles served with red pepper syrup and the other the poached eggs over crab cakes. I had bites of both and immediately wanted more. I had the short rib omelet served with forest mushrooms and cheddar cheese. It actually sounded better than it tasted. The filling was awesome but the eggs tasted a little off to me for some reason. I do love the fact that they had andouille sausage instead of normal breakfast links. All in all it was a pretty good meal and I definitely will be coming back for dinner!
