Seriously, my favorite sushi place in the city. Ever.  Hatsuhana is one of those wonderful, upscale, traditional sushi bars. The wasabi is fresh and hand ground, the fish is flown in fresh from Japan, and the sushi chefs are a blast to talk to. Like all good sushi bars, the meal begins with steaming towels to clean your hands (always nice after a trip on the subway). And like most good restaurants, Hatsuhana starts the meal with an amuse bouche of sorts.
Their sunomono salad is good, the seaweed salad is just okay.  But what you really want are the sushi pieces.  Last time I was there (with 5 people) we had: jack mackarel, spanish mackarel, toro, red snapper and yellowtail toro. Each piece was exquisite. Melt in your mouth, orgasmically delicious.
We also ordered rolls: spider roll, toro rolls, salmon avocado roll, spicy toro rolls. Yum yum yum!
Oh, and scallops.  These were sweet, fresh (they are live before served) and fantastic! Toro is clearly the fish of choice at Hatsuhana, I have never tasted better quality in my life, but you will not be disappointed with any choice. It may be pricey, but it's phenomenal.  Long live the sushi bar!

Yelp's iPhone app ended up being quite useful last night.  I was playing host to my friend in from the west coast.  He and I go way back and our shared love of sushi is so strong that it is a given that whenever we see each other we will be going out for sushi.

We met at the Roosevelt Hotel on E. 45th and I don't know the east side at all, so I looked up sushi places nearby.  I narrowed the search to eliminate the $$$$ places (sorry, Yasuda - I'll get to you someday) and had a long list to choose from.  I saw that Hatsuhana had a 4 star average with 86 reviews, and the photo posted looked appealing so we headed over there.

I won't drag out this review with additional details because you've probably already zoned out and you're reading this and seeing WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS so I'll just summarize:

Great, fresh fish
Super friendly service
Pleasant interior
No attitude about showing up without a reservation

Hatsuhana is an absolutely an amazing sushi joint.  Their attention to detail and flavors of their dishes are top notch.  By attention to detail I mean, how attentive their waiters are and how courteous they are.  With minimal intervention, they are able to wait on you efficiently, courteously and predominantly silently so you can enjoy your meal with friends.

The quality of every piece of fish was top notch.  Everything from the salmon, the yellowtail and the spicy tuna melted in your mouth.

They give you a dessert choice with every meal and while you will be tempted with the green tea ice cream, I recommend the ginger ice cream as it was the best way to close out a perfect sushi experience.

Two things that I notice almost immediately upon entering a quality Japanese "Sushi" restaurant:

A. Majority of the staff is Japanese...more importantly, the sushi chef.
B. It's busy.  (It's all about getting rid of the fish to make room for fresh ones)

Hatsuhana meets both those criteria's. Quality is what Hatsuhana is all about. Authentic Japanese Fresh Sushi. Made by Japanese hands.

Listen, I have nothing against a well trained Mexican putting my spider roll together...but you can't argue with techniques passed down and genetically inherited through decades of training with Japanese hands. Mexican's does burritos as what Japanese does with sushi.

So come here for the sushi & sashimi. Probably one of the best in the city. Plus, their fish specials flown in daily from Japan are PHENOMENAL..... AND....their freshly ground wasabi is a winner.

This is the best sushi I've ever had.

A friend took me here for my birthday lunch.  This is a friend who loves Japanese food and has eaten a lot of sushi.  He says this is the best sushi he's ever had, too.

I ordered the Sashimi Special.  The stuff just melts in your mouth.  Any fresher and the fish would still be flopping around.  I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar and witnessing the chefs' incredible skills first-hand.  Culinary art.

Not to mention that the entire staff is impossibly polite.  On our way out, every single employee in sight bid us farewell.  I heard about seven different thank yous - literally.

I highly recommend this place the next time you're looking for an upscale sushi experience.  Maybe it'll be the best you ever had, too.

I've had this sushi many times but always take out (which they do a great job doing). Their mini boxes for take out..or Sashimi Special are just beautiful with all the different raw fishes. Their miso soup has a great consistency.
I'm a huge fan of their salmon and tuna which I find to be very fresh. Their rolls are very clean cut with a good ration of meat, rice, seaweed...(if you want to be picky). I am a huge fan of the spicy tuna rolls here which I can't get enough of. I have also had some of their special rolls and the tempura which was good. All the other appeitizers are pretty standard but you can expect better quality, less grease, and great presentation.
They were always great about packing the food well, using seamless ordering is easy and super fast. You basically can have a beautiful dinner by just taking the food out and plating it yourself due to their thoughtfulness in presentation.

Recently ordered from here again on Seamless web.

The presentation is still beautiful (although many other sushi places on seamless web also have great presentations), but this was probably the last time I'm going to order from there.  The eel and avocado roll was barely edible given the numerous small bones were in the eel. It was awful, because those small bones aren't THAT small and they're pretty sharp too! Every single piece had pieces of bone in it, and a lot of them.

The salmon sushi, as always, was good, but it does not rectify the faux-pas that was the eel.

Delivery is hit or miss (both regarding if they are on time or if they are there when they tell you to come down) - but I generally find them to be rude and brusque.

I had two RW meals here!  Lunch was a giant bento box with random stuff and sushi for $30, including tax and tip!  What a steal.  Dinner was just about the same amount of food, maybe a teeny bit more, so it's not such a good deal.

Generally, I found the non-sushi to be pretty good.  A pan-seared scallop in yuzu sauce and fresh sesame salad stand out.  But the sushi/sashimi is poor.  The rice was cold, fish was wilty, and generally just unremarkable.  For sushi/sashimi, do yourself a favor and get over to Yasuda.

With RW, this is a three.  If I came here and paid regular prices, it would be a two.

One of the best delivery of traditional sushi. Their rolls are very boring, but their fish is usually fresh and their sushi pieces are very nice. Service for delivery tends to be slow, but worth the wait...  Def recommend!

Big smiles, group greetings and goodbyes and best of all tasty fish.

Very attentive service.
Hot towels.
Chefs with asian eyes and even more asian accents.
Lovely Qi and harmonius joy resonating throughout the room.
Knives sharp enough to cut a coke can.

Lighting to read your favorite harry potter or new yorker article.

Mushroom miso soup, earthy and well balanced to start the meal.
Sashimi plate, traditional and well presented.
(the fish was the awesome!)
Soft shell crab app was tastier on my eyes than my oral cavity.

Prices to let you keep coming back for more.

F8ck yeah!   welcome to the NYC! ;-)

The Squab took me out to Hatsuhana, a place I've been wanting to try for over 10 years!

We made RW dinner reservations.  In our Birdopig tradition, only one of us opted for the RW prix fixe.  The RW dinner was fully loaded (see associated pictures), starting off with Maitake & Bunapi soup (yes!), moving onto a seared scallop with yuzu jelly a smidgen of pirikara Japanese paste (yes!), and shifting gears with Enoki-Stuffed Shitake Tempura (double yes!).

The dinner was rounded off with a bento box containing gobo salad (mayonnaise flavor), a seaweed salad, Hamachi sashimi, a roll of my choice (I chose Hamachi Scallion) and various pieces of sushi (amber jack, fluke, bluefin tuna, and sockeye salmon).

Dessert was included too, in the form of Yuzu Pudding.

The meal started off strong, but the sushi did not live up to the excitement brought about by the first few dishes.  The Squab ordered a 7 piece sushi deluxe that came with 1 roll.  Her scallop was good, but the rest were unimpressive.

There's a Hatsuhana on Park Ave, and also in Honolulu.  I'm satisfied with this being my lone Hatsuhana experience.  There are simply too many Japanese restaurants to try in Manhattan.  If the sushi didn't disappoint, I would've rated Hatsuhana a 4.

The fish here has to be the freshest in NYC.  We were a party of four and ordered Edamame which was served warm (Love that).  We ordered Hamachi Kam Yaki salted, and a seared beef appetizer.  The Hamachi was tasty, the beef was alright- nothing to write home about.  We ordered a entree of sushi and another of sashimi- deluxe version.  We requested no mackerel and they accomodated us.  Each piece of fish was so good!  We also ordered a Chicken Entree and that was delicious!

We enjoyed the mochi dessert and will return again!

Service was nice, although you might have to work a little to get their attention, but we were enjoying the evening and didn't mind it at all.

Looking forward to the next visit!

Went here with my husband for dinner before going to see God of Carnage. The sushi and sashimi were great and second only to the impeccable service. I was very impressed with how quickly needs I didn't even know I had were being attended to. Hot ,fragrant towels before AND after the meal = win. You are in a good place when they stop by periodically and pour your saki for you :D. We shared the Rainbow Roll, Spider Roll (was the best I've had so far, and I've eaten my share of maki rolls), and a selection of sushi with a spicy tuna roll. We were very pleased; chose this place based on its proximity to the theater district, but I will make it a point to come here again!

Another RW spot.. Only this time I didn't go with the RW menu they had to offer. Because the selection didn't exactly wow me.
A giant Bento box with 4 different small plates and sushi rolls didn't come across as RW menu worthy for me.

Decor, ambiance:  This restaurant comes off a little dated  and screams 90's to me. Let's just say the pictures on Yelp looked better.

Having had this month- long craving for shrimp tempura, I went for the Shrimp tempura set dinner. I have to say i was slightly disappointed. The shrimp was fresh don't get me wrong, but somehow the fried batter seemed to lack the crunch to it. While the tempura wasn't completely soggy, I have to say I've had much better at  other mediocre Japanese restaurants.

Ok maybe their shrimp tempura wasn't their specialty but
I expect alot from Hatsuhanna since they hv a 4 star overall from Yelp
Gotta give their sushi a try to hv a more well-rounded review next time

Good sushi dinner tonight.  I like a sushi menu with innovative and inventive rolls; this menu didn't have a lot of unusual or interesting choices, but it did offer some good variety.  Fresh fish, good service, a great meal experience all around.

Quality quality quality.  I'm a vegetarian, so it takes a lot for a sushi restaurant to impress me, and Hatsuhana is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the city.  I used to work in the area, and my coworkers and I would order dinner here at least once or twice a week.  Definitely one of my staples.

Their ingredients are very fresh and very high quality and they make their food with great care, all of which makes even the simplest dishes (like a plain avocado or cucumber roll) taste exponentially better than your average sushi restaurant.  Service is impeccable, they have a great sake selection, and a surprisingly inventive dessert menu.

I've had pretty much everything vegetarian on their menu, and it has all been delicious.  There is a slight difference in menu between their two locations, and slightly difference in consistency of quality; I prefer the one on 48th.  Also, some of their menu items are not available for delivery or take out.

With Masa starting off at $450/person, there's definitely a hierarchy of Japanese restaurants in the city.  In the "My wallet is too heavy, help" category is Masa, Sugiyama, Sushi Yasuda and Sasabune. Then you have the famed Morimoto, Nobu and Gari. One more step (and still over $50/person) and you have Ushiwakamaru, Sakagura, Kanoyama and Hatsuhana.

Continuing my Japanese kick, I bring you Hatsuhana, a place where you bring a date (not me, you. I go for food only!).  It's where to go when you want to save your wallet but still impress the pants off that special someone (figuratively of course...).  Aside from the food, this place deserves a James Beard Service Award. From the moment you step into this two level restaurant, you feel like royalty.  Not only does your waiter/waitress make sure your tea is filled and plates are swapped for clean ones after every appetizer and entree, all your requests are made perfect.  We asked for extra ginger slices and as soon as our heaping place of ginger ran low, she came by with more. Just in case your attentive waiter/waitress isn't around, they have people strategically stationed around the restaurant which you can waive down.

On to the food.  The appetizer servings were a bit small considering the prices but the quality of the food more than made up for it.  The toro tartare brought tartare to a new level. Their special of the day was soft shell crab and it being soft shell crab season, I couldn't pass it up. It came perfectly crisp and not too oily. The meat was sweet and perfectly seasoned.  If you're lazy and like crab, this is your dish.  The other dish I can never pass up is the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar). Always get it shio style (salted).  This dish was served with big chunks of meat, too big.  It lacked the tenderness and oilyness this dish is usually known for, though it was seasoned just right and the skin was amazingly crispy. This is a simple and quick dish, one that I can easily teach you to make.

That brings us to the entree, the "Box of Dreams" which consisted of 9 miniature bowls of rice topped with all kinds of fish including more toro tartare, umi, baby himachi and your usually suspects.  While not the highest quality of fish I've had, it was good enough. Again, this is the place to bring a date. The presentation here is stunning.

I was pleasantly surprised by the unique desserts they had. We went with the red bean pastry with roasted chestnuts and green tea ice cream. Yum. I'm sure their agar jello with red bean and fresh fruit would have been delicious too. Overall, great great restaurant for the price. All this cost us $100 before tip.

Pictures posted!

Hatsuhana does have incredbibly fresh fish - Annie H is right - its not original, but for a midtown sushi lunch place - i actually like it more than Haru for the sushi

I always get the 3 roll combo.. spicy tuna, salmon, and yellowtail with scallion.. and it just tastes better than anywhere else.. this comes with a miso soup and salad.... and i always leaved fulfillled

Service is great, and the place is quiet

22 bucks after tax and tip is a lot for lunch - but when i have a craving and a moment to sit- this is where i am headed.

I will admit that I've only been here once, but the experience was so fantastic, it gets five stars.

I'd say the reviews for the most part are pretty accurate.  It's a little expensive, but we're not talking Masa or Sushi Yasuda prices, and plus, this is sushi.  It's not like you're grabbing falafel on the go.

We ordered a couple of plates of sushi and sashimi combinations and also rolls and pieces a la carte.  Everything was super fresh and delicious.  My favorites were the amberjack, bonito, and the toro.  I've never had bonito as delicious as the Hatsuhana bonito.

We also had a 2 year old with us and they gave him an adorable wooden  mini-fork and spoon to eat with.  For the 2 year old, we ordered a salmon teriyaki, thinking eh, it's just salmon teriyaki, how good is it going to be?  Answer:  REALLY DAMN GOOD.  The four adults were hoping that the two year old wouldn't finish the generous portion of fish, because we all wanted to finish it off.

Overall, this place is a hit. I can't wait to go back.

Honestly?   Fuck Megu.  The place doesn't even have drinks under $9 (including beer).

Hatsuhana is great.  The food is MUCH BETTER than Megu, and most Japanese places.  There were many Japanese "regular" patrons ordering off the regular menu amidst the Restaurant Week crowd, chatting with the sushi chefs.

I guess I feel a bit self-conscious writing all these rave reviews, but I choose my restaurants carefully, via Yelp, and so far it's worked for me.

You can read the menu for yourself so I won't go through it.  But let me just tell you this.  It is totally worth it, and you won't be disappointed.

Personally, besides the food, the highlight of my meal was the carafe our chilled sake came in-- it had a groove on the side that jutted inside, with ice in it, so that the ice won't melt into the sake.  I hope you can get what I mean by that description.

Extremely pleasant service and atmosphere.  Will definitely go back, Restaurant Week or not!

Based on a seamless delivery order:

Underwhelming. Perhaps it was because I was getting it delivered in the dog days of summer, but the rolls were crumbly and the sashimi off-colour. The red snapper tasted like and may as well have been Tilapia.

The packaging delivery presentation was a nice surprise, but I don't think I could have discerned the sushi from a $10 Go Sushi combo in a blind taste test.

Some of the tastiest sushi I've had, and I am a fan of the raw fish.
The strange thing about this place is that its in the heart of Midtown, among the towering skyscrapers, suits, and expense accounts (well, not so much anymore); and always seemed to me like the kind of place I wouldn't find a great sushi place.
The atmosphere is laid back, I always feel welcome and I always get my fill of some very fresh, quality seafood.  Most of the clientele will be in suits during the day, but they're not going to chase you out of there if you show up in a pair of jeans.

(A true 3.5 stars) Excellent quality, good staff, and close to authentic. You can tell you're getting decent sushi if all the preparers behind the counter are all Japanese, 50+ years old, and enjoying a Kirin with fellow clientele. Judge an establishment by their most basic dishes and Hatsuhana measures up decently. -1 star not having several dishes available, desert being mediocre, and staff being slightly impersonal. Otherwise, come get good sushi with out the pretentious zen.

My girlfriend and I went hear last night during Restaurant Week, and we were not disappointed!  We both ordered the Prix Fixe menu, which consisted of a Miso Soup, some tuna sashimi, a bento box with scallops, crab meat salad, as well as more sashimi and sushi.  This was followed by a coffee jelly desert, served up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I thought everything was fantastic, with the highlights being the tuna sashimi appetizer and the sushi pieces served w/ the entree.  My girlfriend wasn't a fan of the sashimi, but in her defense it did have a bit of a rubbery texture.  The wait staff was great, the fish was fresh, and the atmosphere was just what we wanted on a Wednesday night.  Would definitely eat again!

It kind of makes me die inside to only give Hatsuhana 3 stars. An explanation is undoubtedly warranted.

I'm a bang-for-your-buck girl, through and through, and while Hatsuhana definitely delivers bangin' taste, its overpriced tiny portions left me hungrily eyeing peoples' leftovers as they were being carried off into the abyss of unwanted food by bus boys. Never a good sign.

But everything about the sushi that people have said is absolutely true. It's exquisite. Fresh, flavorful, masterfully prepared. I just wish...there were more of it.

The decor is minimalist and tasteful. Hot towels prior to the meal were a much welcomed nice touch. I have yet to meet a friendlier wait staff. Maybe it's because it was 5:30 on a Tuesday and my friend and I were pretty much the only guests, but every single server, busser, and host/hostess who encountered us on our way to and from our table greeted us warmly and then bid us happy farewell. It made me feel famous a little bit.

And so, a perfect 5 stars, minus one star for the large hole in my wallet, and minus another for the equally-sized hole in my stomach. Still, I'd go back. Maybe next time I'll have to wait until I'm actually famous though, so that I can afford to feed my face properly...

I used to work near Hatsuhana, and whenever we had a lunch meeting with the higher ups, we'd goto here.  It is a cozy place; I actually don't think it's particularly good for groups due to it's seating.  Four people at the very most or else they'd have to really rearrange the tables and chairs.

The food is fresh and clean, but not original.  It's the typical sushi & sashimi fare you can find anywhere, for a steeper price because of it's Midtown location.

The crowd is usually business people since it's right between many office buildings.

Do remember to make a reservation though, or else you'll be waiting for a long time.

Short walk from 30 Rock.

Excellent Sushi and excellent service - way expensive but worth it.

Also the first Japanese restaurant I've been to with very authentic desserts.

Nice contemporary decor.

It looks like there is a mysterious secret sushi bar area on the ground level as well which we were not able to explore...

I really wanted to like this place.
I can only compare this place to all the sushi joints in/around LA and OC,Ca.
First of all the sushi looks nothing like their photos, which is such a fraud!
The worst is that the texture is mushy and tastes like nothing.
Their rice is so amateur!
LIke the stuff you get at japanese markets....actually more like sushi rice from Ralphs (which is a non asian supermarket).
Maybe we had a bad sushi chef?? Bad night?? No excuses-
I was so distraught...I was only in town for 5 days and scheduled all my meals...so this was the only sushi meal I was to have!
Good thing there was Halal cart not too far.

I have to say Hatsuhana is one of the best sushi places in town. All their sushi is made incredibly fresh and is extremely tasty. Only downside is i've eaten there probably over 50x that it has begun to lose its appeal. I love their togo with the black boxes and the little kit with the chopsticks and etc. I am sad that their Takaokaya Japanese brown rice tea with matcha powder is no longer included!

Besides that BEST SUSHI restaurant in Manhattan.

I've had everything on their menu. I love their Toro rolls, their dinner special is an amazing deal with the 3 rolls. The Spider roll is a MUST HAVE with the soft shell crab. I am sad to say i thoroughly enjoy shrimp tempura rolls too. SOMETIMES for the fried rolls they put a little too much mayo but besides that its so perfect. I love their rice and how carefully crafted each roll is. Their salmon, tuna, yellowtail and etc are so fresh.

Unfortunately i havent been to hatsuhana in a while because I've been there WAY too many times that im sick of it now. I also think seamless ruins a lot of restaurants for me tho. But it is BY FAR the best sushi restaurant in the city.

I've been spoiled by some of the best sushi ever at Sushi Yasuda but Hatsuhana comes really close.  If Yasuda is too crowded, this is the next best place to go for high end sushi if you're in midtown because there was hardly any wait time.  We sat at the sushi bar, which was a great place to watch the chefs preparing each item.  As an appetizer, we ordered their special mushroom soup, which came in a traditional teapot and was poured into teacups and sipped.  It was very tasty, especially when you squeeze a bit of lime juice into it to add some citrus flavor.  The soup had mushroom slices, bits of chicken, shrimp, and cilantro.  For our entrees, we didn't actually order their sushi but instead we got the Box of Dreams and the chirashi and both were absolutely delicious.  The box of dreams is actually sort of a very fancy bento box equally divided into 9 sections, each of which contains a teacup sized bowl filled with an assortment of fresh fish/shrimp/salmon roe/tamago/uni over rice plus cucumber slices.  It was very beautifully arranged and even better, as you might expect, everything in it tasted dreamy.  It all went well with the sake we ordered.  Even the wasabi provided was the freshly ground type instead of the usual paste.  The service was excellent, beginning with the warm towel to clean your hands to the waitress always making sure your sake cup was filled.  The atmosphere was quiet, comfortable, and felt quite traditional.  It's a bit pricy, but you will definitely leave feeling happy and very satisfied.

To me its the best sushi in town... it's not the best vibe or atmosphere but it's reasonable. Prices are excellent for the quality. They really are.

I've been to a lot of sushi places and this is by far the best actual sushi.

Usually order 2 rolls, a salad and a scoop of green tea ice cream and pay about $25 with tax and tip. can't be beat especially for a midtown dinner!!

I'm not a specialist of Japanese food/sushi, but I do have to say that I was impressed. We called last minute and got a spot at the bar. I've never sat at the bar before at a sushi restaurant, but I guess you wouldn't get the amaizing experience that we got sitting there at any old sushi bar. At first look they have all the regular fish, not too many rolls, but at a higher price. Well the higher prices were for the Japanese yellow tail, blue fin tuna, red snapper (which was btw delish).

As we sat there trying to figure out what we wanted an elderly Japanese couple to our left ordered (with no menu) some pieces of sushi (the red snapper). This snapper was service with lime juice, a dash of sea salt and something else, but the flavors were incredible. I think i could have sat there and just kept eating the red snapper all night.

We tried a few pieces that they had of the real Japanese wagu. We also got laughed at by the sushi chefs when we ordered 2 pieces of cobe beef (they come in sushimi size slices). I'm sorry, they're really expensive and we wanted to try it. So I fully enjoyed my little piece of wagu. Absolutely melded in my mouth.

The rest of the dinner we just asked the sushi chef for recommendations and he would make us stuff to try. Some were amaizing some not so much, but the experience was great.

Authentic atmosphere, prompt service, and good (not the greatest) sushi. I would definitely feel comfortable coming back or sending friends/colleagues.

The fish was great! It was!

Hatsuhana just doesn't feel SPECIAL.

The decor was pretty sparse. Not even Momofuku spartan sparse. More like an apartment decorated with free stuff from the street. The sushi platter was good, if unimaginative. And I really want to give Hatsuhana a 3, because this is New York, and because you have to EARN your stars.

But Hatsuhana is clearly better than the run of the mill NYC Japanese red lantern restaurants, and for the sake of Yelp integrity--take your damn 4.
