Amidst the cheesy souvenir shops, karaoke bars, and Hard Rock Cafe, is Hatch Show Print. I'm not sure if I should call it a: store, museum, Nashville institution, historical music site, or a working factory. It's kind of a little bit of everything!
Walking in, you notice the high ceilings, the slight smell of ink, and the walls covered with posters, old and new. There are many prints, both recent performers as well as reprints of classics, for sale, and they are more than happy to mail them to you (for a cost of course). While I was there, I noticed a couple talking to one of the employees and he was more than happy to answer their questions about the printing process. The woman who helped me was also super nice.
A great place to go, to shop, and to see a part of Nashville's music culture.
You're not a real country music fan if you don't know about Hatch Show Print! This is one of the coolest places anywhere. Every time I'm walking along Broadway, I make it a point to drop by Hatch Show Print. They are keeping a lost art form alive by making the classic concert/event posters that many of us have seen all of our lives. The prices are very reasonable and if you pay a visit to Hatch, you'll have to buy at least one to say that you own such a unique item. Also, pet the cats while you're there!
This is one of the best places to visit during a visit to Nashville. Jim Sherraden and his team are terrific, keeping a traditional art form a live and well! (some tease that I pray at the altar of Jim Sherraden!)There is something for everyone on a stop in this shop. I have a hard time getting out! Definitely not to be missed!
It still amazes me that some folks in Nashville have no idea what Hatch Show Print is. Obviously, by the amount of reviews on Yelp, it's clear they have a big fan base. When I got my first real apartment, I decided I wanted to decorate using Hatch Posters. Now, six years later, I have amassed quite a large collection and probably shouldn't buy anymore. But I have a hard time saying no when I go to a concert and see a Hatch poster for sale. So I generally cave and buy it. At this point, I would have to start exchanging posters within existing frames because I'm out of wall space. The posters are cheap... it's the framing that will break the bank!
I've also used Hatch for several work projects, and they've always done a great job. The designers are generally extremely nice, but it's obvious that they do not need your business. Call to ask about an order and you'll figure that out pretty quickly. They work on their own time schedule, so if you want posters or invitations made I suggest calling far in advance. If you don't have at least a month to wait... Don't even bother. But they are owned by the Country Music Hall of Fame, and are technically a non-profit, so I guess it's not so much of an issue. Speaking of the Hall of Fame, watch their calendar for workshops where you can go and make your own Hatch Poster... I know they usually do one at Christmas time where you can make your very own Hatch Christmas cards.
When my husband and I got engaged, we knew only one thing about the wedding: We wanted Hatch to make the invitations! And we were absolutely thrilled with the results. We told the designer the colors we wanted, and gave her the copy, and from that she created exactly what we wanted but couldn't quite verbalize! We also had posters made directing folks to our wedding and reception sites, since both were a little hard to find. Then we used one of the posters and had it matted & framed so folks could sign it at the reception.
A Nashville institution, most definitely! And make sure you don't leave the door open... One of the cats might wander off and get lost.
Did some research on Nashville before going to a family reunion..Hatch Show Print continued to pop up as a must see. It was our first stop downtown and we loved it!
A bit of history: the first Hatch poster was a 6"x9" handbill announcing a lecture by Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, brother of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", author Harriet Beecher Stowe, at the Grand Opera House on April 12, 1879. Since then, Hatch posters have announced concerts for artists ranging from Opry Stars, to the Rolling Stones. Their biggest customer is B.B. King who gets 7,000 to 8,000 posters done a year & sold as concession items.
Using only letterpress (hand carved backwards onto woodblocks, then hand set on a press, inked and cranked one by one) the posters are works of art.
Enjoyed talking to an intern there who told us the process. Would have loved to go 'behind the scenes' to see the carving & cranking in action, but they were too busy with orders.
Picked up two posters; Johnny Cash & Hank Williams to take home...a great souvenir of Nashville and it's creative history, both in print & in music.
(If you are concerned with your poster making it home safely, they sell sturdy mailing tubes for $3.00 that will fit in your suitcase...I did this and my two posters arrived back in Calif a-okay)
I'm impressed that such an authentic place like Hatch Show Print is still here. It is so much fun to just walk in and take a look around, it's almost like visiting a living museum. They still use the older method of printmaking and inking, and you can see their shelves of stamps and supplies that sit and look like a grand old library.
I'd say it's one of the best places to visit downtown.
I love the wooden floorboards of the place, which I can only assume are the originals, but if not, just let me pretend. They do posters for all sorts of benefits and concerts, and you can actually browse through older ones that are for sale. The prices are not bad. The only problem if you're visiting with a hoard of other out-of-towners, this place has minimal room to move around. I'd say if you're local, just try to avoid time when tourism is at it's peak i.e. weekends.
Awesome. You have to go visit this place. If you are on lower Broad, it is a standout place to enter amidst the sea of tacky souvenir shops and honky tonks.
Hatch Show Print is a Nashville institution that has earned its bona fides. The great thing is you can go in and start to understand the whole letterpress printmaking process. That is to say, you can actually see the shop in action. I love the look and feel of their posters. There's a great selection of prints to browse through for purchase. You can also just look around and see some of the great designs they have done over the year. I think bands get posters done for their shows here to establish their credibility in a way. It's a badge of honor. When I went to see R.E.M. and the Pixies play at the Ryman, the posters done by Hatch Show sold out. Darn it!
If you've been through the Nashville International Airport you may have seen Hatch Show Print posters in one of the terminals (sorry, I don't remember the concourse letter). Yeah, I don't know what else to say. It's a slice of Americana here in the Music City.
So I finally went after all the rave reviews on yelp! I purchased a great large print that I have fallen in love with.
It is a great stop on the touristy walk down broadway...Don't know if they give tours or 'back stage passes', but worth looking into if you have guests coming in from out of town. And since I'm a vet, I loved the cats walking free about the store!
A great, unique nashville business.
Hatch Show Print is the mecca of print shops. If you've ever been interested in gigposters or concert posters, this is a must stop for you. I curated an exhibition for a museum a few years ago which featured contemporary concert posters and Hatch Show was one of the first calls that I made. Surprised? Did you think they only did the old country posters from the days of Patsy Cline and Hank?
Well, Hatch is still very much alive and kicking--producing posters for everyone from contemporary country to the likes of the Killers, Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, etc. Even crossing genres, their signature style shines through.
Drop by and pick up a poster--huge prints great for a loft space are available anywhere from $100-$350 and great smaller prints start at $3!! T-Shirts, books and more.
Hatch Show Print is a favorite shop for buying very cool concert posters; it is loved by locals and tourists alike because of it's unique style. Hatch Show Print is one of the very few printers who use wood blocks to do their stenciling. They have done so many concert posters for all the old school country stars and they have the concert prints for sale in the shop.
They will do a print for your upcoming show too, if you want. They are still a full operational printer and they produce great posters each and everyday.
They have workshops too, where you can learn more about their printing process. They have a class currently where they do the woodblock prints on t-shirts. This is something pretty new actually, they used to exclusively do paper prints, but these new classes...makes me think they might be convinced to print shirts from time to time. This is a great shop to visit.
One of the underrated cheap gift options on Lower broad. I have always found that a Hatch Show print is a great gift for under $20. They look great and they really are a rarity for someone who is not from Nashville.
Hatch Show Print is the oldest working letter press shop in the U.S. and one of my favorite stops on my recent Nashville visit - you must go!
The walls are lined with wood and metal blocks used to produce the posters that line the walls as well. You can take one (or twenty, seriously its hard to hold back) home - they start at $3.00. Root through the bargain bin, there's some beautiful stuff in there. They sell poster tubes for $2.00 so you can get your new art home in one piece.
Very friendly employees (and cats) too!
Ok, so why no 5th star. Well, I would l really love to be able to move around more than just the 100 square foot entry way. There is no denying the quality of the prints, the history of the store. From an artistic appreciation standpoint, I would love to be able to take a closer look at some of the their printing capabilities. The presses and the blocks are something I really would have liked to have seen up close more than I was able.
But back to the prints. They are great and top notch. I didn't see anything I had to have, but certainly many that I would have like to collect.
So, given the preceding reviews, it's clearly unanimous--Nashville loves Hatch Show Print. It's a Music City institution, and the place literally documents our fair city's culture as it unfolds. Hatch Show has been making posters for over a century, and among their selection are some concert posters that you won't believe. If you look hard enough, you're sure to find prints for shows by legends like Loretta, Johnny, Hank, Willie, Patsy and more.
True, some of the more rare posters will cost you, but if you're a collector, I'm sure $50 or $60 isn't out of the question. Hatch Show is the type of place where elementary school kids take field trips, tourists go to take pictures and locals go just to sort through the posters. They still use the same old techniques, so it's neat to watch them at work.
And if you can't spring for some of the high priced concert posters or pay to have a custom one made, Hatch Show also sells postcards and cheaper posters. No matter what you get at the shop, however, is certain to retain the old Southern style solid design that Hatch Show has made famous. This place is "local flavor" to a T. Check it out.
Talk about old Nashville. This is a must-see for anyone new to town or just visiting. Or if you are like me and have lived here for almost 10 years, but just love flipping through the posters, new and old. Hatch has been in business for 129 years now...and still printing the old way.
You can find original press reprints of music legends--country, rock and roll, punk...the coolest ones though have to be those announcing Elvis Presley concerts in his younger days, as well as Johnny Cash and other country music trail blazers.
Buy posters starting at around $3 on up to $50+. Postcards too, I think they run about $1 or less. Prices are great, and stepping in here is a stop in history. You must go!!!!
We bought a cool Johnny Cash poster here (unfortunately there were no Springsteen ones left). Hatch should consider adding a demonstration of how it makes its prints.
This place is really cool to stop in just to admire all the prints on the walls. You've probably seen Hatch show print stuff even if you didn't know it was Hatch show print stuff. You can see the presses that they use to make their signature prints and there are some really cool ones they've been commissioned to do- posters for Adult Swim and CNN's coverage of the debates (complete with ink portraits of Cambell Brown and Anderson Cooper) come to mind. It's a tiny little place that's fun to stop in when you're around the Broadway area. It only takes, like, 30 minutes tops to see this place. I really liked the "One of a kind" postcards you can buy where they just sortof let loose on cardboard with whatever was lying around in the printing press. The staff were really friendly too, they let me flip through their wedding invitations book, explained any of the posters we asked about, and looked up things they didn't know.
Even for someone who knows next to nothing about the art of print making, Hatch Show Print is impressive and tons of fun. You can barely walk a block in Nashville without seeing one of their prints, and if you want to bring some of Nashville home with you their store has a great selection and will sell you tubes to carry them safely home in.
Careful when you walk in, they have a couple cats wandering around, and make sure to chat with the staff, they're really friendly and know what they're talking about.
The only downside is that the walls are covered with an amazing selection of prints, but only a portion of them are available for sale at any one point. Don't get me wrong, they had a large selection, but there were a couple on display that I would have loved to have been able to bring home with me!
A must-see for anyone visiting Nashville.
Hatch Show Print has been printing show posters and other marketing materials for over 100 years. Many of the posters, both on display and for sale, have been printed from the original printing plates. If you're looking for a true Nashville souvenir, look no further than Hatch.
In addition, the shop is conveniently located on the heart of Broadway, near the Ryman Auditorium, hockey arena, Country Music Hall of Fame, etc. So now you have no excuse--check it out!
What a wonderful space in a sea of chotchke. With your first foot stepped through the door and onto the creaky floorboards, you know you've arrived. You feel the many feet that have entered before you. As you look up the very high walls you see posters for concerts and events from the past several decades. Copies of some are available for purchase, others are just for the looking. As you look towards the back of the shop - what seems like a city block away - you see messy desks, boxes of equipment, printing presses and blocks of wood. You can feel the years of activity, even though the only work being done is pure socializing by the hipster employees - I think it was lunchtime...? A must see if you're downtown; worth the trip if you're not.
This is one of the most magical places on Earth. Full Disclosure: I worked there for three years :) It's completely amazing!! Any graphic design or print geeks must absolutely put "Pilgrimage to Hatch Show Print" on their To Do list. Aside from the selections of current and historical show posters for sale, everyone who works there is wicked cool and can give you tips on where to go/eat/shop if you are exploring Nashville and want some inside advice (if you didn't already get it from Yelp!) -- Seriously, folks, the sense of history in the shop is a tangible tingling sensation in the air. You must visit. Tell them I sent you.
Hatch Show Print has been around, in one form or another, since 1879. The letter press poster shop displays graphic gems from the past, like posters advertising old Johnny Cash shows or Bluegrass festivals, as well as contemporary posters that are turned out by the same hand-printed technique. Come on down and take a free tour of the place. Also, reprints can be had for wicked cheap.
The Hatch Show Print store is one of Nashville's true jewels. We had prints made here for a benefit but I had never actually stepped foot in the store so I though I would check it out. If there is one place in Nashville that can really make you travel through the decades that have made Music City, Music City, this is the place. With posters of old and new Ryman shows, it provides a great glimpse into the timeline of music that made Nashville the city it is. While I was there being felt up by the million cats inside, I had the chance to see one of the employees cutting the rubber for a print, she was seriously amazing, you can't imagine the detail that goes into it. If I could have everything in my life made Hatch Show Print style, I would.
So I finally visited also after reading the reviews on Yelp. It's a small little store but it is very cool. I really enjoyed seeing all of the old equipment and I also didn't know that this is one of the oldest printing shops in the US. I ended up buying their signature cowboy print for my son's room at $40. The posters were ranging from $15 up to $400. We had a great time and enjoyed seeing all the music posters old and new.
I had a wonderful time flipping through the show prints and ogling at the large printing press on the premises. If you enjoy one and two color classic posters, you must make a stop at this gem. I even found a print of the 2004 San Francisco Hardly Strictly Bluegrass concert my husband and I went to. For just $10 I got to take it home with me as my Nashville souvenir.
Stopped in while on vacation. Loved it! We spent way too much time flipping through the prints and ogling the ones on the walls. Ended up buying one of Johnny Cash for the guitar room at home. Friend bought several odd postcards (scraps?) to frame as art. Don't miss this place!
Hatch Show Print has been around for more than 125 years, which makes it a Nashville institution, so I had to check it out. Wow, what a cool spot. You can pick up some of their awesome show posters (Johnny Cash, Willie, Dolly) or just hang out and shoot the s--- with the staff. Hatch is located in the heart of the bar area on Broadway, so it's easily accessible. It's impressive to think that this print shop is making show prints for concerts and events around the world.
This is a very cool place. You can tell by looking at the prints that the people who work there have lots of fun. Also, there was this huge fat cat who greeted us the second we walked in the door and a second smaller cat who appeared later but kept her distance. Any place with cats is all right with me.
This should be your #3 stop while in Nashville...or taking out of town guests through the city. Hatch Show has been around for over a century and still uses the original techniques and equipment (wood blocks, hand press, and ink) to print out concert posters and marketing materials. Hatch is as much a museum as a working print shop. Many modern groups still have their materials printed here for a nostalgia feel - but the shop is cool and you can pick up an inexpensive print of the original concert posters and musicians from Elvis to modern day. If you are traveling through BNA (Nashville's Airport) you will note the terminal walls covered with Hatch prints. It also makes a nice tourist stop as you work your way through the downtown.
