I went there for lunch and the place was pretty busy,  ut only one waiter that was also bussing the table...service was ok.
Same thing as the food, nothing spectacular. The location though is amazing: the best corner of the neighborhood!

Fortunate to get a table, it was a nice place to kick off Pride Weekend.  Best cobb salad from a bar that I've ever had.  They put the dressing on the side without me even asking.  The bacon was crispy.  None of the lettuce was wilted.  Just terrific.  And the vodka gimlets that I had along with it were made perfectly.  This is definitely one of the better food choices in the Castro.

Sigh. I love Harvey's. I do. But I just can't get a consistent experience there, especially this new, updated Harvey's. My expectations aren't real high. I want a beer, I want a burger, and then I want another beer. Every other time I go, I get a burger that is cold. The waiters being smokin' cute only goes so far, really, especially when some are nice and some...well, they are too aware of their smokin' status to be at all attentive to anyone else. So, I'll continue to go there when someone wants to and for post-tennis lunches, but I can't give a high rating. Besides, if I did, my boyfriend would begin to question my sanity and I'd rather wait another year or so before he realizes there is a nutcase underneath the veneer.

Don't waste your time with this place. My friend and I waited 30 mins. for a table near the dish tub. The waiter was nice when he had time to take our order. I had the chicken kabob which was bland...and the side ceasar salad had tomatoes and was drenched in some sort of mayo type dressing.  Hello! Ceasar has no tomatoes! Ish! Plus the place was so loud.  The waiter was a nice fellow, though.

The food's generally tasty.  Service is pretty good.  Nice bartenders.   But sometimes there's a sewer-y / cleaning products smell from the side kitchen that can really ruin your appetite.  Some items still too overpriced.

I miss the Harvey's of yore.  Where else could you watch The Sound of Music, The Dark Crystal, and Airplane! all in the same day?   It used to be my favorite place to spend an afternoon- drinking, people watching, chatting with the crew, while Seth's iPod provided the soundtrack to great old movies.

Sadly, over the last few months, Harvey's has turned into every other bar.  Generic loud dance music and ESPN or worse, MTV on the tv's... Out with trivia night, in with $2 drinks and go-go dancers.  What a disappointment!  Before, Harvey's was a refreshing, charming escape from the regularity of neighborhood bars.

Pros: The staff there is awesome awesome awesome (Monty, Seth, Jonathan, Greg, Jesse, Mike, and ALL the others)-- I know them all by name and they are the nicest, greatest guys-- and the only reason I go back.

The veggie burger (with sweet potato fries) is good but it is pretty much the only vegetarian option on the menu.

I like the food, especially the daily specials, but it always seems to take a full hour when I go to lunch (usually at 1 pm or later). Even if I want to linger with my book or laptop, I'd like to have the check so I can keep my lunch break to an hour or less.

Last time I was there, the bartender seemed to be glued to a hot guy, leaving the waiter to do most of the work.  Result: slow service and perhaps an ill-tempered waiter.

I agree with the recent reviews.  I used to really like Harvey's good and local in a good location.  I think the food is pretty fair but the service has been horrible everytime I have gone recently.  I am not sure what the deal is, it just seems to have gotten kind of pretentious.

27May08 UPDATE: So I wrote the original review and wouldn't you know it, the GM actually read this and responded! He was disappointed in my review, and I TOTALLY appreciate him contacting me! With that said, hats off to an establishment that shows that they care about their clientle and their establishment! Will definitely go back! Thanks to the GM (Steve) @ Harvey's and see you soon!

It's in a good spot in The 'Stro, but seriously the food is eh, uneventful and over priced for what you get. Once again though, it has a full bar and THAT helps!

In my adventures with my lesbo-tronic b-f-f, we managed to go here.

It was after some shopping, some gazing and basically walking around and enjoying the city.

Harvey's has gone through many re-incarnations since I've been here... I remember going to Brownies for my Bitches (where all the hot lesbians used to go get their purge on).... and now they've upped it a bit - it's more refined and has some classy touches.

It's a true neighborhood place, they place is capsulated with large windows where it is the best seat to watch traffic flow by in the Castro. I mean today alone, I probably saw 4 people I slept with in one hour.

Haha. Just kidding. But no, this is a good place to people watch while you enjoy the most amazing burger that Castro has to offer. I think they could try some new things on their menu because American food is boring, but hey what self-respecting person doesn't love a good cheeseburger and a nice healthy bar?

Score.

When a table full of 7 mostly straight gals can get good service in the heart of the Castro, you know you're on the right track.  And when that same table full of ladies gets interviewed for a channel 5 news cover about a bachelor reality show for gay men, you're certainly in for interesting conversation, at the very least.  And when that group of women, then modestly (ha! try, we didn't want to risk the fat TV effect after inhaling mountains of onion rings, fried calamari, & nachos) refuse to be on TV, and the nice man interviewing them doesn't get annoyed, and instead starts flirting with some of the straight and not-so-straight and still doesn't get the camera interview, well, lets just say it's a ton of fun.

They've recently redone the place, which is a very good thing.  The general layout is the same, but with the new furnishings, bar-top and CLEAN bathrooms (yes, it can happen, even in the Castro), the place feels much more polished and clean.  The menu is about the same, with slight rate increases.  But the important thing is that the chicken nachos are still something to go out of your way for.  And the lemon-drops seem to be a house specialty, as they are consistently perfectly mixed.  All in all, a relaxed environment, with decent food and drinks, and friendly patrons and staff.

Best burger in the Castro.

Get a window seat facing Castro Street if you can -- the corner that Harvey's sits on has a happy energy that is unparalleled in SF.

Harvey's used to have a Trivia night that was awesome - you had a really high probability of winning something, in part because it was held early in the week, turnout was low, and although your competition knew all the answers to the celebrity and show business questions, you ended up crushing them on just about everything else.

(that's a hint - I hope they bring it back -- free beer is a great motivator . . .)

Had some issues with Harvey's in the past, but i decided to give it another whirl since i recently heard about the remodeling through a random queen at my yoga class.
Like night and day!
Place looks great, service has improved, and the menu managed to steer away from the strict  'bar food' it used to have.
Got my 'app' on with a basket of sweet potato fries, then moved on to a Ranch wrap. Both went down quite nicely :)

Harvey's is so great!  I love the window seating and excellent location!  The great staff help make this bar/restaurant such a comfortable place.  Not only are the burgers and appetizers delicious, but the extensive bar keeps you liquored up!  I have lived in the Castro for 14 years, and have always enjoyed popping into Harvey's since it opened 12 years ago for a quick bite or a nice place to relax and watch some bar television.  Don't miss out and make the mistake of going to some other pretentious restaurant in Castro!

What drew us here were the burgers - meat AND veggie - and more importantly, restrooms.  I was just surprised seeing a veggie burger that was made of black beans and corns in a place that was dedicated to meat.  I'm not going to be picky.  Did I mention that I had to pee?

The food was good, no sauce though for the burger.  Nothing a little ketchup can't cure.  And our diet cokes were flat.  I think they poured it out of a bottle.  Anyway, it's a chill environment where you can grab a drink, watch some soundless movie, and have a conversation where the music is loud enough.

OMG PANDA IS GIVING SOMETHING IN THE CASTRO A 2 STAR REVIEW WTF IS THE WORLD COMING TO AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

...

Don't get me wrong, the queens in here are absolutely WONDERFUL, but they were playing VH1 on the television, Flava of Love 1,000,000 or something, and the particular episode was about medical problems. As far as I'm concerned, when I'm DRINKING, I don't want to be reminded that there are medical problems in the world.

I'm DRINKING. HELLLOOOOOOO.

The bartender took forFUCKINGever to get my Kir Royale and Adam's gin martini. How hard is it to pop open an already-opened bottle of bubbly and top it with chambord? NOT HARD. You were too busy chatting it up with the guys down the bar, which SUCKS because HELLO, HELLO, HELLO we're here to spend MONEY and we're awesome TIPPERS and are you DEAF and BLIND I need a DRINK.

Halfway through they put up neon lights and started charging a cover to get in. Good thing we already had a tab, because we needed to go outside and have a cigarette to get away from Flava of UGGO's and get the foul taste of bad champagne out of my mouth.

FAIL. Next time I'm going to Amber or whatever its called.

I love Harvey's! There are just times when I crave some chicken wings. Mmmm...great chicken wings. And Harvey's chicken wings are so flavorful, big, and with a touch of spice. Their $3 drink special was tasty (last night was an appletini) and their bloody mary wilson (lemon-y bloody mary) had just enough tang. Also had their mediterranean turkey sandwich with havarti cheese and fresh tomatoes - YUMMY! The pesto aioli made the sandwich. My friend had the fish and chips, which were pretty huge considering there was only 3 pieces of fish. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, centrally located and easy to get to. And it was just what I needed after a few drinks to celebrate St Patty's!

Best damn hands-on food within the Castro (that isn't Lime).

If you're into being put on display while masticating, sit in front of the panes (too large to be just normal "windows"). Since I was with my pretty lady friend and I was rocking a good hair day, we chose the people-watching high-backed tables for eating.

Food is like upscale fast food; fries (but really you can order them with an aioli or as sweet potatoe), sandwiches (paninis, really), drinks (Chamtinis in a tall, square glass, anyone?)...it's like popping through the Looking Glass and seeing the ordinary culinary world turned couture.

The salads are BIG, as are the thrice cut wedges of sandwich you can order. Get your drink (or flirt, depending on if you're strictly dickly) on, and be glad your credit card isn't being 'Milk'ed for eating here. You can get a great meal and a drink for less than $20 incl. tip.

Granted it's not as mod as Lime/Mecca or as bar-y as B.O.C. or the plethora of alcoholic dives in the neighborhood, but the atmosphere is unassuming, the service isn't pretentious and the food is definitely worth a shout out.

Just a good place due to the namesake. Although, I'm not certain of the history of "Harvey's" restaurant..I do realize that this place was erected in honor of Harvey Milk. For that alone, this place definitely warrants at least one visit..and many, many more from me.

The space is open and airy, with a smattering of two tops, four tops and a few bottoms thrown in for good measure..*cue snare rift. Wide windows open up onto Castro and 18th, which is teeming with people galore. Hobo's making asses of themselves, street musicians setting up shop on the corner *( who also happened to be playing some very beautiful music. Thanks for serenading me while we ate!) and everything in between. I was slightly confused by what they chose to play on the flat screen tv's; Lord of the Rings AND the NCAA finals! Oh well..I didn't come here to watch TV, but it would have been nice to see either pics of Harvey Milk and the such from that era or at least some good ole gay videos.

The menu reads like standard bar fare; burgers, done to your liking, deep fried, battered chicken fingers, quesadillas done in many guises and salads galore. Although, these offerings are far greater than most pub fare that I've sampled. I went with a grilled chicken sandwich, which with monterrey jack cheese, perfectly crisp bacon and the l and the t on the side. The fella went with his mainstay; Chicken Fingers. He mentioned that they were good, if nothing too special..We made a pact to return and imbibe a few more times here....

AND

I implore you to do the same...Yes, there's good eye candy to fill your bank for days. Yes, the drinks are super, super stiff and of course, you knee deep in the "community"....but I'd like you to check this place out for those that came before us, alone. For the men and women who made it possible for the "GLBT" community to be just that. A COMMUNITY. Without men like Harvey Milk, Barney Frank and the list goes on and on...we'd still be living our lives in the closet...With them..we are a strong, vibrant community of upstanding citizens who are now finding themselves COUNTED. We need to constantly remeber those who came before us to continually move forward.

I love this place and I admit that part of it is that I've been going there for years, back when it was a bar.  Another reason is that it's the prefect place to meet my best girl when we are both hungover and need some greasy finger foods and a bloody mary.  The staff is always, always nice and I really like the food.  It's also fun when you get to sit near the window and people watch.

They just can't get it right at Harvey's.

This should be top food, top service, top fun. It is an iconic bar in an iconic corner of an iconic neighborhood. Then, what the fuck?

Service? Slow and clearly not having fun (with the exception of the guy with a mustache/goatee).

Food? Blah. It wasn't terrible, but definately on the pricey side for its flat quality.

The new ambiance is an improvement, but nothing to write home about. It also closes before all the bars in the neighborhood, for no apparent reason... oh, wait, it's because nobody want to be seen here after 10pm. Their fault for making this such an un-happening place, I'm sure.

Brunch menu is a little better, and it is more crowded.

The Castro does not need another lube shop, men's tee-shirt store, or gay bar. What it needs is just one really good restaurant. But this ain't it.

I had high hopes, having not tried this restaurant since it re-opened some time ago, and I was open to giving it a try.

I was not surprised that the veggie options were few and far between here (this is bar food after all), but in fact, there was only the bean-burger on offer and a couple of salads. So, we tried to fill-up on the regular fries and an extra side of sweet-potatoes - the latter is a nice idea, but sadly, they were only OK... a little dry even.

I was pleased that it was a bean patty rather than some regular tired garden-burger offering, But the patty was was probably the highlight of the meal, and it really should have bean (ha!) - at $10.50! That's more than I have paid for a burger anywhere downtown.

You would think that that that price it would at least be a good size, but the portion of fries was mean, the patty was small, and this was one of the tiniest buns I have ever seen anywhere - even in the Castro! (Badum-bum!)

I have been to Harvey's twice since it reopened. Both times I had the bacon cheese burger. The second time they forgot the bacon. I told the waiter and he returned shortly with a small plate piled high with crisp bacon, enough for three burgers!
I like the new look of the place, and that you no longer need a key to use the restroom. The bartender and waiter both times were very attentive and friendly. I'm glad Harvey's is back, now if they would only bring back trivia night and bingo.

Okay, I totally LOVE the nachos here -let's start from there. Great diner at a fantastic location, above average drinks, excellent service and decent prices. I totally get the vibe here -- the people are friendly and completely unpretentious, but once in a while they have some scary-ass nuns that show up. Even so, their wonderful comfort food totally makes up for any freaky entertainment. Oh, and did I mention I LOVE their nachos?

Gross.  One of the worst burger's I've ever had.  And while the place isn't extremely expensive, it is definitely over priced when you consider the quality of the food.  When I'm paying $12.50 for a hamburger to eat at tables so small you have to eat while rubbing knees with your friends and I ask for extra napkins, it would be nice to receive more than one.  If I have misunderstood their attempt at being green, I appreciate it, however 2 or 3 additional napkins for a table of four would be suitable...especially when we are all eating messy food.  I actually had to walk over to the bar to ask for the 2 additional napkins.

A friend and I were wandering around through the Castro on a sunny, beautiful day, intending to find some place to fill our hungover tummies and cure the illness that had been brought on by some unidentifiable stench that had suddenly appeared on the muni, and we stumbled upon Harvey's.

The service was incredible!  Our server was courteous, incredibly friendly, and a joy to interact with.  We both ordered the Ranch Wrap with crispy chicken and a side salad, which was also amazing.  The wrap was extremely flavorful, and managed to be crunchy without being dry, and the salad was possibly the freshest salad we'd ever had.  My friend was convinced that they grew the ingredients in a garden in the back because it was so fresh!

Really fantastic.  I would gladly go there again.  I have absolutely no complaints what-so-ever.

My name is Steve and I'm the new General Manger of Harvey's.  I have been here since late November 2007.  Before coming to work here I was a regular customer (I live in the neighborhood).  I am not really the kind of guy to write reviews but I do read them.  I checked in with Yelp and Citysearch regularly to see what other people thought of Harvey's.  It was a real confidence builder to see that my thoughts about the positives and negatives of the place were pretty much in line what what other people thought.

When I took this job I promised to work tirelessly to correct the negatives and amplify the positives.  This restaurant is a San Francisco institution and I care very much about getting things right.  I recognize the fact that not only are we stewards of the Harvey Milk legacy but we're also "home" to a lot of people in the neighborhood.  We believe you should be able to have a high level of confidence that when you come "home" you'll be able to get good food at a fair price and have attentive service.

I want to let all Yelp users know that I care about what you have to say and I encourage you to please send me a message through Yelp if we don't meet your expectations.  You may notice a change or two to our product and it might not be favorable in your opinion.  If you have a concern such as this please send me a message and I will be happy to provide you with an explanation as to why this change was made.

Any changes we make are for the sake of improving the product, not saving money.  As one gentleman recently pointed out in his Yelp review,  we changed our french fries and he speculated that it was for cost cutting purposes.  That sort of conjecture isn't unreasonable, but at the end of the day it isn't correct.  He liked our large cut steak fries that we used to have, and isn't a fan of our new crisp coated skinny fries.  The truth of the matter is that all french fries pretty much cost the same.  The reason I changed them is because I noticed that most people didn't eat all of their fries and sought another option that was more appealing to the masses.  We conducted a thorough tasting with a panel of regular customers and the final consensus was that they liked our "new fries" better,  so we made the switch.

In his review he assessed that our food quality has gone down hill, and when I read his review as best as I can tell (as I'm sure will be the case with you) the only basis he has for this statement is his preference of french fry.  So because of our fries changing he believes that our food quality has taken a dive and consequently we deserve one star, and he's never eating here again.  This gentleman is certainly entitled to his opinion but I think he's being slightly harsh. (keep in mind he says that the service was good and that the people at the table next to him approved of the food quality)

I'd like to think that most people that write reviews on Yelp realize that fairness is essential to the integrity of this website.   It is absolutely fair to give a hardcore dis to businesses that clearly don't give a crap about you as a paying customer and don't have enough humility to listen to people when they feel mis-treated.  My ultimate point is that we care and want to do right by everyone and it is my hope that fact will be enough to persuade you to be fair to us when you write a review.

So, if any of you Yelpers eat at my restaurant and don't have a good experience, please drop me a line.  I'll do everything I can to explain why things are the way they are, and if you have a valid point I'm happy to take your suggestions and implement them.  Just give us a chance to make it right before you go and crucify us!  We care about our customers and want you to be happy.

There's a lot of new things happening at Harvey's.  We have a new drink menu and wine list.  The drink menu has some absolutely awesome drinks that you won't find anywhere else, and the wine list features some top notch selections, all from local Northern California vineyards.

We'll also have loads of live entertainment starting the last week of February.  Tuesday nights have live comedy with Marga Gomez.  Wednesday nights will feature a live jazz duo.  Thursday nights we go back in time to the days of the Elephant Walk with a piano bar.

I want to thank all of our loyal patrons and the folks that have written great things about us.  To those of you that were disenfranchised by the previous regime I'd like to tell you that it's a new day with a new attitude at this establishment.  I do hope that you'll give us another try and allow us the chance to regain your trust and confidence.

Please do feel free to share your thoughts with me by sending a message through Yelp.  I promise to respond promptly and do everything I can to make you happy.

I've tried going in here a few times, but they were either too busy/packed for seating, or they seated us and proceeded to ignore us anyway.

Yeah... not really a good way to keep customers.

The last time we were in there, we actually spoke to fellow patrons, who told us a) don't bother eating here; b) yes, new decor; c) terrible food, and d) worse service.  Yeah, they pretty told us to just go elsewhere and not waste our time/money!

I spent a long time working in the Castro without venturing into Harvey's, but then I saw Flat Iron Steak on the menu (Niman Ranch I think) which I absolutely love, I had to try it out.  I am a patient person so I am never in a rush to be seated or helped so I never really rate my experience on that aspect, but all three times I have been to Harvey's I have been helped in a timely manner by friendly staff.  The flat iron steak meal was delicious and came exactly as I ordered.   Everything was perfectly seasoned, and the veggies were five good sized bites of lightly steamed goodness of a tastefully healthy variety.  The two onion rings plopped on top, wow.  All I can say is that It was a perfect way to end that meal for sure.

So the only time Harvey's messed up was when I ordered a to go breakfast and walked all the way home only to discover a bacon avacado ranch rap or something, which looked delicious, but I didn't touch it and brought it back, hoping that it wouldn't go to waste.  They were very nice when I came back and comped my meal for me, but then they forgot the sausage...but you know what, the lesson I learned was to always check your to go food before you leave with it, so maybe they were just testing me with the sausage.  No they were very nice though and I would love to bring a date or my family there.  Thank you!

Why I like Harvey's:

1) Those great picture windows.

2) The Rita Moreno hamburger.   Topped with pepper jack cheese, cilantro and guacamole.

3) I can take anyone there and they feel comfortable and welcome.

4) Decent beer selection to wash down that Rita Moreno.

5) It's named after Harvey Milk.

The one serious negative:

Sometimes those bathrooms get nasty.

After a morning of car shopping, I was pretty darn hungry. I headed over to Harvey's to meet a friend for lunch.
I had eaten at Harvey's several times and had problems with service but decided to give it a shot because my friend really loves the place. I went in with high hopes.
We were seated fairly quickly and waited about fifteen minutes before a server came to our table. We placed our orders, I had the club sandwich with fries.
It took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive. The food quality was actually really good. I noticed in other reviews that the quality seemed lacking but I found it to be ok and pleasing.
However, the server never replenished our waters or came back until we were already done eating. The server that came back was a different server or filling in for the original server.
The bill came out to around $40.00 and I paid with a card.
The next day, I checked my statement and the server had ran my bill for $140.00. Thankfully, I was able to get this reversed fairly quickly.  I was very unhappy about this because I just felt that it was way too much trouble for a sunday brunch.
I doubt I would go back to Harvey's. There are much better options in the area with higher levels of service for your $.

What? Fried macaroni and cheese balls with tangy sauce? Where do I sign up?

Came for appetizers and drinks before dinner and its a chill spot for kickin it with a homie or two. Fried macaroni and cheese balls were crazy. The chamtini was  pretty delicious. It was a strawberry chamtini and I was torn because I kinda wanted a watermelon one. OH DECISIONS. Damn those decisions.

Next time is definitely gonna be the watermelon chamtini.

Okay, I'm a little biased--I performed comedy at Harvey's last night (as well as many other nights when it was under different management) and  want Marga's Funny Tuesdays to go on forever! I had an absolute blast.  I love so much about Harvey's--the location, for one.  The clientele--if I could only perform in gay rooms, I would never get sick of standup.  The staff was so courteous and attentive.  It was a very busy night.  I ordered the spinach salad and it was fresh and delicious.  Love the new decor...what else can I tell you...just go there on Tuesday nights--you will see great comedy from hilarious comics for FREE.   FREE!!!

Update--it is now Harvey's Funny Tuesdays on Tuesday night.  Keep supporting live comedy!

Dropped in for a beer and people watching.  For a Friday night it wasn't crowded, like every other bar/club and my friend and I could actually hear each other.  Beers on tap were pretty varied, but they still need to reinstate the pear cider. Bartender and barback/waiter were super friendly and quick to serve.

A great lunch on a great day. Best friend and I used the surprisingly sunny weather to stroll around the 'Stro, stopping at Cafe Flore for a couple of Irish coffees before making our way to Harvey's for a late lunch.

We both ordered paninis and replaced the french fries with sweet potato fries - both the sandwich and the fries were delish.  And of course being the lushes we are, we ordered some French Martinis (vanilla vodka,etc.). The friendly waiter was kind enough to suggest making one of them a "Chamtini" same thing, but with champagne - lovely.

The atmosphere was relaxed and the windows at this busy intersection allow for some great people watching - that is if you have time between discussing work, boys, styles. One drawback, if you are of the female persuasion, are the restrooms. Since the clientele is mostly male, the cleanliness leaves much to be desired - yet another of the many times I envy men for being able to pee standing up!

Great stop for a nice sammie and drinkie on a Saturday.

I've never had bad service here. I think the secret to enjoying a nosh here is ordering the sweet potato fries. And being drunk (or well on your way).
