I had such a great experience at Harvard Square Eye Care yesterday it's not even funny.  I had been a little hesitant to make an appointment here due to some not so stellar reviews, but ultimately went with HSEC due to their convenient location, the fact that they accept both my forms of insurance, and that their website listed a wide variety of brands of glasses (many of them designer) to choose from.  To say that I'm glad that I went here would be an understatement - every aspect of my exam and glasses consult exceeded my expectations!

I found everyone that worked here to be very personable.  The doctor was very thorough, and explained to me what was going on with my crappy vision (The glasses I've been wearing every day for the last three years have damaged my vision due to their poor fit; I've also developed an astigmatism).  She was patient with me when I couldn't decide which was better, one or two? and was just generally friendly while remaining professional.

The woman who helped me pick out my new frames was also incredibly friendly.  She let me go through the cases of eyewear myself, but also handed me different pairs to try on.  She was very honest about which frames worked for me and which did not.  She was quick to get a sense of what I was looking for, did not try to rush me at all (I basically tried on half a dozen pairs of glasses at least half a dozen times), and suggested the frames that I ultimately chose.  I would never have picked them up myself, but they look great on and I love them!  She was also really helpful and knowledgeable about lens types and different coatings.  She explained the advantages of a polycarbonate lens vs plastic, and why polarized lenses would be ideal for my prescription sunglasses.  The best part?  She wasn't pushy, and she didn't try to convince me to spend money on treatments that I might not really need.  She even chatted with me about her son studying abroad in France and asked me about myself while I was sitting with my pupils dilated, which I really appreciated.

I basically cannot say enough nice things about Harvard Square Eye Care and the people who work there.  Oh, did I mention that my glasses will be ready for pick up TOMORROW?  Everything about my visit was great; I will definitely be coming back!

I'm reviewing both the Harvard and Porter Square stores in this. I had checkups at both places.

Harvard Square:
I went here last year. It was a mistake. First off, I had to wait 20 minutes for my appointment. When I finally saw the doctor, the appointment took forever. She was very friendly, but extremely slow.
When we were done, she told me that I would need another appointment to finish up. I've never had to do a follow up on a basic eye checkup. So I come back for the second checkup, and now I need one more follow up to check the new lenses and see if I'm having any trouble with them.

OK - so the place was a mistake. I should have learned my lesson, right? Wrong.

Porter Square:
I went here a few weeks ago - mainly because the location is so convenient. My doctor was friendly, my appointment started on time, and the whole process was super quick. There were no follow ups, or second follow ups necessary. The 'contact fitting' (which confuses me since nothing about my contacts changed - why do I need to pay for the 'fitting' again?) was about $60.

Great, right? Wrong.

So they tell me that if I order my contacts through them I can use my insurance discount (which I do not get with online purchases).
Here is where it gets tricky - the person on the phone tells me that the price is $199, plus I get a $20 discount. Now in my head, I'm thinking this means I'm paying $179 minus the ~$140 my insurance is covering, so I owe these folks ~$40. He asks for my credit info, I give it to him.
When I get my bill, it is for  over $60. So obviously I call - and now it seems I'm mistaken. The $199 is including the discount - duh. No apologies for any misunderstandings, or anything like that.

So I guess here is the thing about this place. They try to gouge you - whether it's on unecessary follow ups, extra charges or overcharges. If you don't mind that sort of thing, this is your place. As convenient as it is, I will have to find another place to get my eyes checked.

Fool me twice - and all that jazz. How about this guys - I will not be back.

I was really surprised to read any negative reviews here, because my experiences with them have been very positive!

I first went to HSEC in July 2009, after deciding the glasses I'd been wearing for 7 years needed to go. I set an appointment, which I was able to get very quickly, and was greeted by a very warm and friendly receptionist when I went to the store. I watched initially as a woman helped a customer pick out frames, and commented myself on which frames I liked best (i know how hard it can be picking out good frames!) After this, I was called for my appointment, and was surprised to find that the doctor was also the one assisting with frame choice! I was pretty impressed by the level of service she offered personally in that regard, and she was really dead on in her frame selections for the person before me.

After my own appointment, the doctor walked me to the frame displays and picked out 2 frames without me even needing to say what I was looking for, and one of those two was the frame I picked out. They are unusual compared to most other frames, so the doctor asked if I was certain that these were comfortable for me, and I assured they were. I let her know how impressed I was by her ability to pick out frames so well, and that she takes the time to assist customers personally. On top of that, the frames were ready for pick up in under 4 days!

In this day and age where it's so hard to get competent, personal service where you as the customer really feel important, it was a great breath of fresh air to have the experience I did here. I enjoy supporting local businesses anyway, and with the kind of friendly service I received here, that philosophy has been strongly reaffirmed.

After calling to confirm which of my two health coverages they didn't take and making what I thought was an educated decision to go to them anyway, I fought my way through a thunderstorm to get to my appointment.  The doctor was 8 minutes late arriving in the office for my 10am appointment.

Then, after I finally got in for the appointment, she asked me a question about my existing contacts which allowed her to tell me that my current brand had been discontinued.  This meant that I would have to pay $240 for a new fitting (for the record, my last doctor charged me $80 for a fitting).

Had this question been asked over the phone, I would have told them that I would be looking for another doctor that took both of my coverages so that I wouldn't have to pay this fee.  Instead, she wasted two hours of my time (travel plus the wait), and we accomplished nothing.  I was unimpressed.

Tragedy struck, as tragedies often do, on a beautiful summer day when I was least expecting it.  I was casually strolling through Harvard Square when the left lens of my prescription sunglasses inexplicably fell out of the frame.  Somehow I had lost a screw.  "Good thing this happened right in front of Harvard Square Eye Care!" I thought.

A little background: I worked my way through college as a lab tech at a LensCrafters, so I knew this was the easiest fix in the world.  Replacing a screw takes about thirty seconds and--at LensCrafters at least--costs the customer nothing.  Screws cost almost nothing and the labor cost is negligible.

So I pop into Harvard Square Eye Care and explain the situation.  They take my glasses from me.  "That'll be ten dollars.  They'll be ready in half an hour."  I laugh, because obviously they're joking. Wait. They're not joking.  Half an hour? Ten dollars? I walk out, a bit stunned.  Did that just happen?

I do a lap around the block and decide to go back and rescue my glasses.  I'm not paying $10 and waiting half an hour unless this flippin' screw turns my glasses into X-ray goggles or something. I squint in the sun the rest of the way home and repair my glasses myself.

I'm all for the mom and pops, but not if they're going to fleece me.  What kind of rube do they take me for?

This is honestly the best eye care experience I have ever had. I went in because I saw their huge selection on the website. It turns out my prescription is 3 years old and no longer valid. I got a full exam and with my insurance ended up paying $10 for an exam. But the part that blew me way was their willingness to help me right then and there. Once we discovered my prescription wasn't valid they told me to go have a cup of coffee and they would squeeze me into the booked schedule in 20 minutes. I was floored. The exam was the most in depth vision test I have ever done. Once the exam was over I was brought out front and offered help by an optician to pick glasses. The selection here is fantastic. Tons of unique frames I have never seen anywhere else. Believe me I have looked. While looking the gentleman helping me(Clark) noticed the nose-pad on my own pair needed replacing. Before I knew it he had my glasses and was back with a new nose-pad for me. I was in a rush that day and couldn't shop for frames. I also wanted to bring my girlfriend back to help me decide. When I told him this I expected him to become curt and disinterested in helping me. That was not the case. He said he would write down the frames I had picked out in a book that way if I decided to come back there would be a record. I asked how much I owed for the repair and he refused to let me pay. 1 week later I came back with my girlfriend and I picked a frame I never would have chosen on my own but looks amazing. When we were done I was told in 2-3 days I would have new glasses. 2 hours later I was called to come and pick up my completed order. WHAT!? It turns out Clark had to make a trip to the lab in porter square that afternoon on unrelated business. The glasses were completed while he was there. I work across the street and had new glasses back the same day! I have never been more impressed with a purchase like this in my life.

Could not say enough positive things about HSEC. Their staff is efficient, professional, and accommodating. Their offices are clean, well-lit, and comfortable. Quality of care if very high. I've been to Cambridge Eye Doctors and can honestly sat this place is far and away the better eye care option in Cambridge.

A couple of examples:

- When I went in for my exam in May, I was unaware that my old vision insurance wasn't covered by HSEC and that my new vision insurance wouldn't start for another month. HSEC staff discovered the discrepancy and found a work-around on my medical insurance so that I could still get an eye exam that same day and not waste my time.

- The doctor - I forget her name, but she is an Asian American woman - took the time to explain everything thoroughly and clearly. My eye exam with her was the most thorough one I've had in years. She took the time to do some preventive testing as well for glaucoma.

- Most importantly, I had my contact lens fitting the day before I left for a weeklong trip to the West Coast, and understood that I wouldn't receive my contacts until after I returned. Lo and behold, the day after the fitting I received a package at the office with my contact lenses in time for me to take them with me on the trip. That kind of speed is just unheard of (for example, at Cambridge Eye Care it took me MONTHS to get my new contacts subscription)!

The only reason why I'm not giving HSEC 5 stars is because of one little shortcut that I felt they took when they didn't really have to. After my contact lens fitting, it was clear that one of my prescriptions needed to be powered up. Instead of giving me that new prescription right away, the optometrist asked me to stay with the weaker trial lens until the new contact lenses arrived. That said, the new lenses did come the very next day, so no harm no foul.

All in all, highly recommended!

They should have a place to review each location, because I had an acceptable experience in Harvard location and an awful one in Porter. This is my Porter review, because I am compelled to warn you to STAY AWAY.

I waited 30 minutes for my scheduled exam. Once the doctor was available, she rushed through the exam and then out of nowhere told me that there wasn't enough time to complete it because she was too busy. She made me come back another day to finish my exam, and they didn't have any openings for a month. I had to reschedule this second part of the exam a few days before it was going to happen, and the receptionist was very rude and said that if I was going to reschedule, I would have to wait another two months. It would have taken three months to receive a complete eye exam! I called their Harvard location that same day and they fit me in an hour later.

Now, as for to the eyeglass shopping experience, buying the frames was another ordeal in itself. They didn't really have styles that worked with my face, and the guy helping me out said he had the perfect pair of glasses for me, and that he was going to order a shipment for the store. He told me they'd be in stock in a week - I called once a week, and a month later, they still hadn't even been ordered. I understand the situation not being a priority from their standpoint, but then they shouldn't have gone out of their way to make it look like they were providing me with a special perk if they couldn't follow through on it.

In the end, their Harvard location handled everything (eye exam and glasses) and was so so so much better. My bad Porter experience has really overshadowed it, however, and I will be staying away from this company as a whole moving forward.

I ordered contacts on-line and they did not show up for over a week so I needed to go elsewhere.  I found Harvard Square Eye Care through their great reviews on-line.  Harvard Square Eye Care was able to get the lenses in two days.

I thought these guys were really helpful and professional.  They also gave me a pair of trials because I had been wearing my lenses for over the two weeks.  It was so nice to be treated like a person instead of just a number.

The Optometrists at Harvard Square Eye Care are truly great.  They provide the most comprehensive eye exams that I have ever had.  Also, I was referred to an ophthalmologist because one of them found a hole in my retina.  Everything turned out fine but I was really happy that she did not hesitate to do that.  I always buy my frames from Harvard Square Eye Care because they really help with finding the right style that fits my face.  I am really picky when it comes to frames and I thought that the eyeglass specialist was really patient with me.  I also am picky about the way my glasses sit on my face and they are really nice when I go back a million times to have them adjust my glasses.  They do not give me any hassle and I do really appreciate that. I just was to say thankyou to Harvard Square Eye Care and I definitely reccommd them.

I left this store feeling very ripped off - so ripped off that I called back and canceled my order.

I checked out this store because of its "Best of Boston" award and my hunt for some designer frames.  The store seems to have designer frames, but upon closer examination they carry nothing but run-of-the-mill, made in China junk that you can get from a discount, online glasses store for half the price.

The store takes my insurance, which gives me $130 frame allowance.  I left having purchased some glasses with a list price of $395, minus my $130 allowance, equals $265.  When I got home I looked them up online to show my wife - only to learn the same glasses online MSRP for $175 and can be bought for $105.  I also learned these were not designer, made in Italy or Germany, but generic made in China frames.

How could glasses online WITHOUT insurance possibly cost half what I paid using my insurance at an accepted outlet?  I was so outraged.  I called the store back and told them to tear up the order and credit my credit card.

The only positive thing I can say is that they did credit me without any fuss.  I guess they knew they ripped me off.

I have awful problems with my eyes, so going to the eye doctor gives me the nerves that most people get when going to the dentist. I started going to the Harvard location, but switched to Porter when it opened because it's so close to my house. The Harvard location wasn't bad, but Porter is terrible.

I had to wait an HOUR the time to get seen, and the doctor didn't apologize or even mention the delay. Instead, she rushed through my exam and wouldn't take time to answer my questions fully. She also decided that I should have my eyes dilated, which was frustrating because I could have been doing that for the HOUR I was waiting to be seen. So, I had to come back a week later and the experience was exactly the same.

I'm changing eye doctors now because eyes are too serious to be left in the hands of an inept doctor.

I'm astonished by the sheer number of negative reviews here.  After I got an eye exam at the "Exeter eye associates" at the Lenscrafters near Copley, which yielded a wrong prescription and contact lenses that were not suitable for my eyes, I found these guys on Google and went into their Harvard square branch (on Dunster street) to check out a new pair of glasses (Frame + lenses).  At first, I was struck by how tiny their showroom was, which seemed to contradict their claim on their website that they had a wide range of frame selections.  But then I realized that this claim really did seem justified given that they just arranged a large selection of frames closely lined up, and tightly packed in glass cabinets, so it just looks like they don't have much but in fact I thought they had a good selection of frames.

I found that they had at least twice the number of frames in their tiny showroom than other stores which had at least twice the showroom space. I was able to find several frames that I liked and settled on one that cost around the same price as what I would've got at a Lenscrafters.  I've been wearing glasses for much of my life, and the typical price for the frames at the store seemed comparable to what I've always paid for frames in the past.

The lenses also were of comparable price as other stores.  When I mentioned if I needed to add extra stuff onto my lenses, the optometrist who was helping me ("Dr. D") told me that there was no need to spend the money on such things other than AR-coating, which made sense.  I gotta admit, I can come across as a bit of an "easy customer" so she could've easily tried to rip me off, but she didn't.

She was also very helpful in making sure that I had the right prescription this time around.  After getting my eye exam here (cheaper than what it cost me to get the wrong prescription at Lenscrafters), she went over each number written down on the prescription very carefully and spotted an error that one of her associates who actually performed my eye exam made.  It turned out to be only a minor change but I've never seen someone so thorough when going over my final order.

This place certainly isn't cheap, but I didn't feel that it was more expensive than any other place I've been to.  The sales associates (some of whom are actual optometrists) can seem a bit "pushy" (such as Dr. D) but I think that's because they are actually enthusiastic about helping me and they actually know their stuff.  Given that I will need to wear these glasses everyday for the next few years, i think a knowledgeable, helpful but seemingly "arrogant" optometrist is a small price to pay.

Overall, I'm pleased with the experience and they gave me a 10% (not a lot) discount since my insurance couldn't be used there.  But I can see how the sales associates may seem a bit condescending and do see a point in other reviews -- perhaps they can tone down a bit? :-)

After a disappointing experience at Lenscrafters, a quick Yelp search led me to Harvard Square Eye Care.  Initially I was a little put off; despite the company's Web site boasting the largest frame selection in Boston, I found a showroom that was literally smaller than my bedroom.  However, a guy came over and asked what I was looking for and, unlike at Lenscrafters, he actually *listened* and was very helpful.  He was patient while I tried on frames and made a decision (with the help of my brother and future sister-in-law), and once he began pulling frames I realized that the selection was much better than I had initially thought.  I walked out that Saturday afternoon with the guarantee that my new glasses would be ready by the following Tuesday; they were, and they came out fabulously.

Given that I walked in with a prescription I cannot comment on the doctors at HSEC, but I would go there in the future simply based on the fact that they accept so many insurance plans.  The one major drawback is that they are pricey (my glasses started around $400 then it was an extra $100 for scratch- and reflection-resistant lenses), but the investment was worth it to me, and I wound up with something I really love.

I'm looking at these other reviews and see that there is some kind of schism. People either really love or really dislike this company, and I can't see half of it, because I LOVE this company!

I went to both offices, in Harvard and Porter Squares, pretty much to shop for frames. I heard this was a locally owned business and that matters to me, and that they had a surprising selection of frames.

Well, that hardly even begins to describe it! I've been wearing glasses since I was a toddler, and after visiting the Harvard Square office, was impressed with the overall quality and variety of frames.

Expensive? They have frames for about $150 to about $700, as I recall. Considering that the majority of the lines they sell are handmade, that seems very reasonable, especially after looking at what is available on Newbury Street. Unlike many other eyeglass places, these guys seem to love titanium, although other places say it's hard to work with and fit. Apparently these guys have overcome that.

I saw and tried a bunch of frames I liked from France, Germany, Italy England, and Japan, all handmade, and just handling them, I could feel the difference from other "good deal" frames. You get what you pay for.

There were quite a few people working there. The guy who helped me was very pleasant and helpful and the woman there also showing frames was quite energetic and seemed to cut to the chase nicely. At first it seemed a bit odd going back and forth, but it yielded some nice frames. When I asked about more styles and colors, they quickly told me of the Porter Square location and off I went.

Very different feeling store, and I was there on a Saturday. The Porter location was incredibly busy, and at first I thought the guy out front was overwhelmed with people picking up new glasses and people looking at frames. But he was amazingly knowledgable about how different frames and prescriptions would work and was calm, smiling and joking, all while taking care of 4 or 5 people. He greeted me immediately, as did the lady behind the reception desk, who was also calm in a sea of activity. They aren't kids, and seemed to take the hubbub in stride.

This guy asked me questions I've never been asked when buying glasses, and at first I thought it was odd, but watching people picking up their new glasses and the profuse thanks and smiles, I figured he must know what's what. He was also "training" someone, is the best way I can think of it, how to use a complicated lens for the first time that he was picking up.

Interestingly, he showed me some of the same styles as the Harvard location, which was comforting, I suppose, but then, after letting me browse, nixing some choices and then adjusting some others, all while helping other people, he just grabbed a frame out of another case and said "humor me." It was totally different than what I had thought I wanted, and it was brilliant! I ended up with that frame, and I love it!

He then, after sort of placing me in a queue, attended very closely to someone ordering glasses with a bunch of lens issues i didn't understand, but he did keep cheking around to see that everyone was happy and interjected a bit here and there to people as he was very detailed in his help to the lady he was "creating glasses" for, as he said!

He looked at me and said "you're up next, so don't worry" and I just couldn't help but think it's worth the time. He never rushed her, and she left smiling after placing her order, and he never rushed me, either. He explained the materials the lenses are made of, talked me OUT of spending what would have been a wasted $100 on a lens material that I didn't need, and made it all clear to me. And all this is while patients are arriving, leaving, etc.

He also reminded me that they offer a courtesy discount on frames to people with no eyeglasses insurance! That was a total shocker! But, I never turn down a discount.

Sure, I spent real money and I got real, beautiful glasses by Kio Yamato, and I've gotten tons of compliments for my awesome frames. This guy said my fairly high prescription would be impossible for people to figure out in the lens material we went with, for less money, and he was right!

As I said, I've worn glasses since I was a little kid. This company and their people taught me more in this purchase about glasses, lenses and such, than I had learned in my entire life of getting glasses!

The glasses were ready in 3 days, as promised, and are beautiful. The time and attention spent at pickup, with fitting, cleaning instructions, a few goodies thrown in, and making sure I could really see well and was happy was a nice surprise, and shows that after you pay, you still matter.

By the way, it's nice to say that the guy at Porter who was so helpful, even while he was so busy, was also named David.

Overall, nice, helpful friendly people in both busy offices. Insurance or not, I'm getting my next eye exam there. This is a class act.

These guys were great. The staff was super friendly and accommodating to my schedule in regards to making an appointment, and were more so when I got to the office. I was seen promptly, and the exam was nice and quick, yet thorough. After the exam, the doctor helped me pick out some frames (offering some helpful advice as to what looked good and what didn't).

I can't comment too much on the price as my insurance, VSP, covered pretty much everything; I had to pay a bit more for the lenses I got, but that was to be expected. At any rate, I have no complaints about these guys, and would definitely go back for my future eye care needs!

I more than agree with m.g. from Somerville with the statement that they seem way more interested in taking your money than actually helping you.

I went in their with my boyfriend searching for a new pair of frames and before I could even ask to try on a pair, the man working started hounding me to see my prescription.  He seriously told me he would like to see my prescription before I try on any frames! The reason? He didn't want me to get my heart set on some frames that I couldn't have because they wouldn't work with my prescription. I've worn glasses since I was 10 and NEVER in my life has anyone said this to me.  He said fitting some prescriptions into glasses is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. That may have some element to truth, but I explained to him that I was just browsing for now and would let him know if I found a pair I was interested in and show him my prescription then.  He insisted! "Well I really need to see your prescription before you try any frames on!" and all under the guise of "helping me" not get my heart broken over a pair of frames.  On top of that, he was being rude to his employee in front of the customers telling her that she needed to finish what she was doing before moving on to something else when she was obviously helping a young woman in the shop.

I'm not the only one either. There was some other woman in their buying a pair of glasses and they were being SO pushy telling her she needed to buy this extra, and that extra and explaining everything to her like she was a three year old. In the end she was like, "I'm really not worried about it!" (whatever explanation they were trying to force on her).

They had a couple of nice frames, but I left completely disgusted with that man. I would have complained to the owner about the TERRIBLE customer service, but I have a feeling he WAS the owner. I recommend anywhere but there! I hope they go out of business.

I really loved this place as soon as I walked in.  The staff makes it really comfortable . They have a great selection of frames and a deal that you get half off a second pair of frames... so I ended up buying sunglasses as well.  Dr. Dickerman helped me pick out frames so I felt that not only was my vision going to be better when she got me new lenses, but my glasses would look nice too!  I felt really relaxed and not at all rushed out like at so many other offices, I mean, picking out your next pair of frames is an important decision!  On that note,  I also really liked how honest she was about what did not look good on me. I think it worked out great because I get lots of compliments on my new glasses!  I will definitely ask her to help on my next pair when I go back.  I wanted to write this review because I hope that other people will know enough to ignore the other reviews that were poor and know that this is a truly great experience.

The exam seemed thorough but that was because I was getting a contact lens fitting that I did not ask for ("to check my astigmatism," they said). They assured me I would not be charged and the doctor (Cohen) offered me a "free" trial contact. Magically my insurance company denied my claim for glasses because they said I already got a contact lens fitting. I did not get contact lenses, did not ask for a fitting, and yet this office charged me for a fitting, leaving me with a $300 bill for my frames.

These people are liars and theives. $145 is an outrageous price to pay for a contact lens fitting.

Also, their "exam room" is a cubicle and sink at the back of an office. The eye chart is tacked onto a door that leads to a storage area and there are water stains all over the ceiling. For all the money they are stealing from people you think that they could provide a more private space for healthcare. Seriously, eye care is not just about fuzzy vision. Patients may  have serious health issues that they might not like to discuss in such an open area.

Also, street parking is hard to find, garage parking is expensive, the frames are overpriced. Save your money and go to Four Eyes down the street.

On the plus side, after you get ripped off here you can always walk across the street to Au Bon Pain or Finale to drown your sorrows with a cookie or cupcake.

When I called to make an appointment, I asked whether my insurance would cover any of it, and was told that it would cover a prescription for both glasses and contacts, plus a discount on frames. Great! Then I went to my appointment, and was told that the contact lens fitting wasn't covered and would be $150. Not great. If you're looking for someone in this area of town, try Brattle Square Optical instead.

I enjoyed the diagnosis and the lenses, but had to buy a frame that was paid by the insurance company.
