I've never had a fast service until I came to Harumi's. The moment you walk into the restaurant, you'd feel comfortable already by the welcoming of the employees there. If there's not much customers, they'll let you sit where you want to. Usually, I sit by the window with my friends. It's nice to see the pretty Subaru cars across the street. Haha.

Since I started going there, the only roll I have ever tried was "The Regulator". It's a deep-fried roll and it's only 10 bucks. I also order a side of miso soup. It's delicious. Together, it makes about $13. The cool thing is they give you a Harumi card. It records every time you eat there, and each time is money given back. The more you go there, the more the money on the card adds up. Then I'll be able to buy a roll using the card. If you don't get it, you have to go there to know it.

As for prices on everything, it is pretty decent. If you're looking for rolls under 10, they have it on their menu. And for the boxes, I say they are pretty worth it because I see that it fills up my friends.

Overall, this is a really good restaurant. Try it!

This past week, I've eaten at Harumi's like literally 3 times. It's great! I absolutely love the customer service and especially the food.

Their udon is delicious. I prefer the tempora, not that big of a fan on theyr'e nabeyaki just because there's too much going on.

I love how they have a lot of options when it comes to their special sushi rolls. The price is decent because they give you a good amount. My friend ordered 2 sushi rolls and couldn't finish it because she was full but she really liked it (btw she's a picky eater).

Everything's pretty much great. Another awesome thing if your a regular at least is that they give you a card of your order history and if you reach a specific amount, you can be awarded with a free appetizer, entree.. etc. depending on how much you spent. Love this place!

Back when it was Fuji Sushi, this was our favorite place to eat sushi because the prices were CHEAP, food was good, staff was nice and they loved the military folks.  If a few military guys were sitting at a table, they'd send over a few tall bottles of Kirin!  Dang skippy if that didn't get us to come again and again.  It was a bit of a dive..but it was our dive!

Since it's changed to Harumi, it seems that the food has changed a little, it has gotten more pricey, they re-decorated but it didn't take it up another level...just kind of climbed a few steps.  And the wait staff isn't has amicable when you come in.  Their nice...but not "our sushi dive yell a greeting to you when you come and go lively atmosphere" nice.

Pros:
Good sushi
Large selection
Good fish

Since jugem is burnt to the ground. I been looking for a good Japanese restaurant. We were hungry after teaching a class at the beauty school so we decided to walk in to this place. To my surprise, we had such a great experience. The service was good and the sushi chef was really nice, he recommended the Grinch roll and the white dragon, which were to die for. I have been here a few more times since and I can say this is my one of my new fave sushi places!

I can't recall the name of the restaurant that used to be where Harumi is now but I must say I was quite impressed on how a change of paint and decor could make such a huge difference. I remember the old place used to have a gloomy atmosphere due to the lack of lights and the dull paint on the wall. The owners of Harumi have certainly brighten up the place and created a much warmer atmosphere.

Moving onto the food, I ordered the chicken donburi bowl while my friend ordered two pieces of hamachi and an eel donburi bowl. Overall, I felt that the chicken lacked seasoning and had way more rice than chicken. The meal was also accompanied by some miso soup and salad. I felt that the salad dressing was extremely overpowering and that the soup was like any other miso soup I have had before. As for my friend, he enjoyed his meal and had no complaints.

One last comment I would like to make is on the service. We were the first ones there when the restaurant opened at 5 but yet we hardly ever saw our waiter. While there were a few tables after us, it wasn't that busy so we couldn't understand why our waiter seemed to be mia a lot.

Final Thoughts

I will definitely have to come back and try other things as well as give the service another chance. For now, its a decent sushi place around Monterey.

Harumi is a great sushi place for their various kind of rolls.  We ordered Oshinko Roll (japanese radish) roll--a simple but crunchy roll.

Pink Dragon special--a yummy avocado and salmon with tempura shrimp

First love roll--a little spicy but a strong savory flavor finish.

The service is very attentive.  They have a casual atmosphere and so every server comes by to ask if we need anything.

We always walk away satisfied and happy about our Harumi dinner.  I highly recommend them.

This place is DISGUSTING. the fish is no longer RED... it's more PINK... as in... OLD. the staff act like highschool children. The chef in the back (young Asian guy) keeps asking "howz ur food?" like he's asking constantly cause he questions the flavor of what he makes. Very irritating.

We went to my friend's hometown to celebrate her birthday dinner with her family. With the help of yelp, we decided to try Harumi in Seaside. Too bad I don't live anywhere near here because I would love to come back for their sushi. Outside the sushi, the two people in our party also got seafood udon and they said it was good.

We got 5 special rolls and all of them were good: Noah Special, Husband and Wife, Red Dragon Roll, and 2 other rolls (don't remember their names). I will definitely eat here again next time I'm in the area and the service is very good! Everyone was friendly and attentive--one of the very few sushi places that refill my tea without me asking.

Sometimes I want rolls and this place has a variety of sushi rolls.

The service was good.  They gave us a lot of attention but they were a bit too fast.  My family likes to eat every single grain of rice and one of the waitress took the bowl of rice with a couple bites left inside. I had to cover my bowl as she reached down attempting to grab it.    When I eat dinner with my parents we like to take experience slow and take our time.  I know it was mother's day and they want everyone to have great service, but great service isn't fast service.  Oh yeah and they thought my dad ordered a rock n roll when in fact he ordered a dragon roll.  So make sure to annunciate and have them repeat your order.

WOW this sounds like a bad review but in fact I really enjoyed the place and food that I plan on going back.  This yime the good food outweighted the "too quick" service.  The food won't disappoint you.

Stop hesitating and go NOW!!

Harumi is the best place in the area for sushi, because not only is their fish ALWAYS fresh and tasty, but the prices are reasonable.  The sushi dinner specials are the best, because you get a lot of nigiri sushi, tekka maki roll, and a california roll.  (I choose to replace the california roll with sometime else for an additional price.)  My favorite roll is the wonderful roll.  I also love the cherry blossom.  The seaweed salad is incredible, and the tempura ice cream is so good.  I go all the time!

I've been here twice now, and so far so good.  The interior is a major change from what Fuji's used to be.  It seems like their quality of food has gotten quite better.  Service is quick and the staff are friendly.  Their prices are not too bad either.  I like to come here for sushi/dinner since it's right down the street from me and it's inexpensive.

I usually get the teriyaki beef dinner combo with a spider and california roll.  Haven't really tried all of their sushi just yet but I plan to in the future.  It also looks like they have a larger selection of food to choose from unlike what Fuji's use to have.

I tried this place when they first opened and found the restaurant appearance to be greatly improved from the previous Fuji. It is very clean and simple...more along the lines of what true Japanese would be.

The food on my first visit was very good. I ordered a combo bento box and the food was tasty and fresh. The service was excellent. My mom had tempura and it was also very good.

I have been here a few times since the grand opening, the last visit being last Saturday. I was very disappointed. I couldn't drink my miso soup. Not only was it pretty watered down, the bowl it was served in had an odor to it. It smelled like perfume or perhaps dish detergent. I again had a combo bento box. The salmon was extremely dry and not very flavorful. The sushi was mediocre. The hot tea was terrible. It was more like just plain hot water.

I don't think I'm going back

After a friend (Annie H., if you will) raved about this place, I decided to check it out.

My first impression was that it's cleaned up quite a bit in terms of "atmosphere." Fuji's had been a create place to catch a lunch special, but it was kinda grimey and gross looking.

The rolls were pretty damn good. The salmon had the melt-in-your-mouth quality. The sweet sauce didn't overpower the rolls. And it wasn't too pricey for good sushi.

The service was especially good -- I am a pickled ginger fiend, and the server was not at all stingy about accomodating my love for it.

We decided to try out Harumi due to the big "Grand Opening" sign and because Oh Sushi! is a little expensive for a lunch place. Overall I was very happy and will definitely go back.

At first I thought there was only one page of rolls, I had picked one out until I turned the page and realized that there were three pages. Huge selection, kind of hard to pick. I finally decided on the White Dragon, came with tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, cucumber, and yellowtail. I was very happy, just the perfect amount of spiciness. The others who got rolls all were happy as well.

Most of the coworkers all got different lunch boxes, you can order with either 2 or 3 items. The boxes were pretty big with lots of food and very reasonably priced.

The staff were all very nice, brought our food out promptly, and everything was presented nicely.

One small negative was that they put all of the rolls we ordered on the same huge plate in the middle of the table. Since three of us had rolls, and weren't sitting strategically, I ended up stacking mine on a smaller plate. It was the leaning tower of sushi!

Five stars for being good and resonably priced (there's no such thing as "cheap" sushi).

Went here for lunch with two coworkers and had some great sushi.

First off it's a huge improvement from Fuji's, the old sushi place in the building, I waited a while to try it because I was sure it was just a name change to avoid the IRS or something. The place is much less dumpy, not necessary trendy high end, LA sushi fancy, but respectable and clean.

The server was friendly and quick, she brought us some edamame, took drinks, etc as we sat down. The rolls looked very creative, along with the staples. We got the sushi lunch special, 6 pieces of CA Roll, 6 piece of nigiri and 4 sashimi for $13. Fish was very fresh and the sashimi was cut just right. The salmon and white albacore was awesome. Will definitely eat here again. Perhaps some of the cooked food.

So haven't tried many sushi places here in the Monterey area yet.  But those I have seen haven't looked too inviting.  I prayed to the Yelp deities to show me the path and luckily they directed me to Harumi.  So heres the deal:   Not too busy, but the service was prompt and friendly, no complaints.  Large list of specialty rolls, would take multiple visits to work through em all, nothing crazy exotic or impressive but options nonetheless, and options are a good thing.  Rolls were good, tasty, fresh.  Only had rolls, but everything else on the menu looked on par with what you would expect from a good sushi spot.

So in summary, good sushi, good selection, good service.  Not a trendy, new wave, fusion, new hotness, but not trying to be either.  And the prices are reasonable.

On a different note, all the employees were speaking Korean.  Not that it matters, but maybe if youre down with the Hanguk mal you can get the hookup.

This is a mixed review.  We came in a large party of 13 and there certainly was space for us (3 tables put together).  The food was pretty good, the service was friendly, but basically they didn't really seem to have their act together.

The main thing is that it seemed like they were seriously short staffed --- it took perhaps 30 minutes for them to take our order, and maybe 45 minutes to get our orders.  We kept on having to ask them for little things like water, an extra pair of chopsticks, a misplaced order, etc.  We also ordered one type of sake, they came back 5 minutes later telling us they didnt have it.  OK, we order another type, then another 5 minutes and they dont have that one either.  OK, we try a different approach --- which of the sakes you have on your menu do you really have in back?

Having said that, the staff was pretty friendly.  So 3 stars for the food and the friendly staff, but 1 star for their operations.  Average to a 2.

LOVE it!!! I used to go to Oh Sushi but that place has gone way down hill. I've had Harumi's twice in one week and love it. Nice tight, fresh rolls.
I gave it four stars today because my friend ordered a veggi roll with soy paper and the rice was outside of the paper and it was super sloppy adn fell apart as soon as she grabbed it. She couldnt eat it without making a total mess and used her fingers.
They could put some more sesame seeds on their seaweed salad also.
But my rolls were great

Visiting Monterey from the Bay Area and found this place on Yelp. We had the combo bento (chicken teriyaki, California roll, gyoza). The portions were good sized and the price was competitive. Also had the chicken udon and that was very good. Large portion of noodles with tasty chicken with a nice assortment of veges and Japanese spicy pickles. I would definitely recommend the udon. They do have a large assortment of sushi which looked good but didn't try it. The service was very good.

My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out and were pleasantly surprised. Fuji Sushi, which formerly resided in the same building, was pretty bad, so we were hoping the name change also meant a change of philosophy/management. Maybe we were right? The food was MUCH better than Fuji -- I remember all of their rolls tasting the same. Our server was very attentive and the food is reasonably priced for the area. We will definitely be back.
