This review is entirely centered on brunch, because, quite frankly, their brunch is wonderful and amazing. I've not been there for dinner, drinks, or lunch, but have been for brunch a few times and love this place.
First: unlimited drinks with your entrée, for free. And they refill your drinks often, and you are welcome to sit and keep having a few even after you've paid your check. The wait staff is wonderful here- one waitress remembered me a year after the last time I'd been there.
So, I shouldn't really be sharing this place with all of you, but I have to spread some love. You don't have to show up an hour before you want to eat and wait in the freezing cold until you're finally squeezed in. You don't have to constantly ask for your drinks to be refilled- water or otherwise. The brunch is moderately-priced and really good. I've had a number of egg-based things and was happy every time. I think they only do brunch on Saturdays, though.
This is my fave restaurant in the Stone Street area, a step above in every way..a stone's throw from my awesome apartment and a great place to take dates.
The bartenders all know me by name and I must say, they are mighty fine. I need to go there more often without a date, because it's like bringing sand to the beach with all the talent that's in the house!
I have only been here for brunch but many many times - "unlimited champaign cocktails" would be an enough reason, but delish food (duck hash is my fav), assortment of breads included, and great service makes it a no brainer.
You won't see models/celebrities but after 3 bellinis, 3 mimosa and 3 kir royals (that is how I roll, it is free, people!), everybody look so sexy and charming that I am ready to propose right then and there
LOVE Harry's, and can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet! This place is one of our faves in our nabe -- it's kept us very well-fed in our two years in the FiDi (which we also love!).
The grub is consistently grand. We usually get delivery but eat in on occasion. The hubs drools over the steaks, but I stick to the cafe side. Standouts that come to mind...
Salmon (especially the downright dreamy mustard preparation they had last year)
Scallops
Hibachi kabobs (especially the shrimp)
Soups (especially the mushroom)
Salads (especially the Harry's and the grilled shrimp + spinach)
Grilled chicken paillard + salad
Pastas (especially the truffle cavatelli)
Curried lamb stew (we get this all the time -- and trust me, I'm Indian and know my curried lamb and this stuff's f'in delish)
The brunch here rocks, too. I love all the Benny and the Eggs options and the coconut-cornflake French toast. The coffee is awesome and the free unlimited champagne cocktails scrumptious. We've had many long, languid Saturday brunches here -- they never rush us out. The brunches seem to attract more people every time we're here. (I just wish they'd open on Sundays, too!)
The service is excellent -- friendly and efficient and youthful. The space is expansive for NY, yet very clubby, cozy, and warm. The bar scene is pretty lively in a low-key way (i.e., it's not an obnoxious singles scene like at Ulysses) in the evenings -- mainly FiDi locals and Wall Streeters unwinding.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the Stone Street scene in general, and in my book Harry's is the crown jewel.
EDIT: Well, well, well, what are the chances that my first negative experience with Harry's takes place on the very night I post my review? I placed a simple delivery order that took two-plus hours and three follow-up calls to finally get delivered. Outrageous!! However -- they did pick up the tab and throw in a dessert. The food's still good (especially since we're starving now). So I'll forgive this one lapse and leave my 5-star rating unchanged. For now. Harry's, please, PLEASE don't start slipping!
I don't think this place gets enough love for their all-you-can-drink brunch. Some love is here, but just not enough.
Here is what I've read about the downsides of OTHER such brunches:
-The $15 charge for drinks is on top of the food. lame.
-They don't actually refill your drinks that often, or maybe even cut you off.
-It's so packed you have to get there quite early
None of these complaints apply to Harry's.
Go Harry's. You are my brunch boyfriend.
Food= Delicious all around. Entrees around $13 - 18.
Drinks= Great, considering they are on constant refill. Often they refilled them before we even finished them. And they let us drink after we paid our bill. That's love. (Unlimited drinks come with whatever entree you order)
Waitstaff= Extremely efficient and very nice. Even they seemed like they were having a good time.
Note: Brunch is only on Saturdays. I think.
Well actually writing a review for their sister bar Vintry Wine and Whiskey, across the street, which couldn't be found on here since they recently opened. What a disappointment! some interesting wines on the menu, but the service seemed like deers in the headlights! I decided to sit at the bar and have a few drinks and the annoying bald, little bartender seemed as if he should be tending bar in Chevy's! For the price I except someone a bit more sophisticated with a bit less b.s. and bit more knowledge. Not very conscientious either. Would not go back!
Came here for brunch today and was very impressed. Great food, great service and the unlimited champagne brunch is great.
We were thrilled about the muffin type bread they gave, then I chowed down on their lobster rolls & fries which were delicious. I was impressed since I walk by here all the time and have never tried it for food. The quickness of the waitress refilling our champagne- AMAZING!
I can't wait to come back for dinner!
Take my review with a grain of salt because I was working at a different restaurant with the same owners as Harry's so I got some discounts and preferential treatment. Hopefully my review will still be of some use to you.
I have never eaten in the cafe but I definitely hope to in the future. I was on the steak side which is fancier and more expensive. I think they might have the same steaks though so if you are on a budget, the cafe is probably a good bet.
I went for Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. My biggest tip is to ask to sit in the GROTTO when you make your reservation. The grotto is in the back and is almost like eating inside your own tiny private stone walled room that opens up into the main dining area. We sat there at a table next to Harry himself, who was having dinner with his wife.
My server offered wine pairings with a set menu which I ordered. My boyfriend doesn't like wine so he did his own a la carte thing. We loved everything we ate. My wine pairings were excellent. The steak was so good and we ordered three desserts because they all sounded so yummy. We ended up taking home three shopping bags of food because we wanted to try so many things and didn't want to waste anything. We ate like kings for a week!!
The price of the set menu and wine pairings was not TOO bad - I want to say around $75 but it was a while ago. Our bill game to $150 after everything but I did get a discount so I think it might have been more like $200 if I was just a regular joe.
I can't recommend it enough - just make sure you sit in the grotto for the most romantic experience.
Harry's ($11) [grilled lamb chops ($6), lobster slider ($5)] - notorious expense account place, huge chop, huge slider, perfectly medium cooked meat, lives up to all the hype, CRACKTACULAR!

I had steak here during a trip to Manhattan. The atmosphere here feels like a typical New York restaurant. There were children running around. The food wasn't bad, but nothing special. An average restaurant.
I went for lunch and thought everything was great. The service was top notch. The food of a solid 8 out of 10 but you can tell everything was high quality. The drink menu is extensive and the Fall/Winter menu was excellent.
Had the filet mignon - best Ive had in a long time and the service was great.
This review is about Harry's Steak, although I like the Cafe side too.
Harry's Steak is actually located on Pearl Street, the narrow entrance takes you down steep steps to the tiny bar area - a great hidden gem in itself.
The main dining room is small, but absolutely beautiful. Dark wood, giant murals, dim lighting...the absolute best NYC atmosphere you could want. I cannot overstate the coolness of the room - visitors looking for the real NY power room dining experience should head straight to Harry's.
The steaks are the best; I had planned to eat just part of mine (watching the calories), but could not resist another bite, then another, until it was gone. Delicious.
The service is elegant, no other word will do.
Highly, highly recommended. Listen to me, I'm a steakhouse expert.
A classic stand-by.. and I'd say the best spot in the immediate area, all things (including value) considering..
It's a true NY experience..
and the crowd is a bit older and more polished than the "I've got ya f'in series 7 right here", 25-35, "wall street for a year or two" crowd in many other places in the area
Historic address.. and a great atmosphere.. (read Otto N.'s review)
The food is very far above average and can be surprisingly affordable.. definitely "bear"able~
The weekend crowd is cool, but late on a weekday night is just as good~
The bar is nice, some surprises in the beer selection and a TRUE full bar..
(+ food at the bar is no problem. plenty of room and plenty on the menu for good quick eats.. they've even got some dishes to draw eyes to your side of the bar like the kebobs served with fire on your plate)
Great great place~ A huge asset to 10004,5&6'ers~
P.S. Sunday brunch is definitely good! and.. free champagne! haha
Harry's serves brunch on Saturdays with unlimited champagne cocktails. The food is pretty decent but I think its the unlimited blood orange mimosas that keep me coming back. I usually get the an omelet which is just alright although my fiance really loves their steak and cheese, and I have to admit its pretty delicious, but I personally crave breakfast food at brunch. Sometimes I feel like the waitresses are a little judgmental of the rate at which we drink our mimosas, but I am feeling a little less guilty after last weekend when a large group asked their waitress if she would just bring them out a bottle of champagne! haha Also, brunch is very reasonable, an omelet is only $13 or a little more depending on what you add in, and you get the unlimited champagne drinks.
I love Harry's. The Cafe side has a more of a diverse menu, but the steaks are also available and fantastic. The filet with the bernaise sauce and fires are great. Staff is very helpful - especially picking out wine - and the Captain is the man. Getting a table or eating at the bar is a delightful experience because the atmosphere is old school but by no means stuffy. Music is decent and the crowd at the bar can bring some energy. I've only been to the Steak side for lunch, but it seemed a bit more stodgy.
Coming to Harry's is like watching a movie with a star that is a bit passed it's prime... There are more entertaining and more popular places but here the food, service and attendance is pretty solid.
TIP: The Mushroom soup is great!
The attendance seems to be better in the winter when the Outside Bars are not around...
I am, once every three months, stuck in a hotel in the Financial District, and was about to faint, and really wanted a Hangar steak.
It was a large delicious portion, with awesome fries, homemade steak sauce I didn't really care much for, but a really cozy environment. Reasonable too, $24 with fries is pretty good for a real steakhouse. Thankfully the douchehead bankers at the bar were partitioned off from the old school restaurant and were surprisingly muffled and not too loud.
Fairly good appetisers. The hebachi meat app is fun with groups to grill your own meat on a stick. Fairly decent after work hangout.
Who doesn't love entering a restaurant by stepping down below street level, especially into a deep wood toned and warmly lit room filled with an old-school and welcoming atmosphere.
Clearly a well organized operation, with professional and warm service, fantastic steaks and a wide ranging menu. Had lobster spring rolls and chicken skewers that arrived on their own charcoal grill. And the hanger steak was the best so far in the city.
The only weakness appears to be kitchen management. While the quality of the food is spot on, the timing of the orders is haphazard. Not a problem if you have spare time.
Would love to come back and explore the inviting bar. Could see this as a local!
The Wall Street Institution in its heyday, Harry's Café & Steakhouse still maintains much of its old-fashioned charm, despite a recent redecoration. Of the two, I personally preferred the Café's décor. Though the Steakhouse had linen, it had no windows to let in some natural light. The Café, with its natural light and well designed layout, is certainly a prettier space. You don't feel like you're eating in a basement for one thing.
I have been to the Café for hor'dourves and for lunch. Both experiences have been positive and solid, though not spectacular. The hangar steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and all in all, a great lunch steak, but something was missing that made it fantastic. I heard a lot about the shoestring fries, but they were soggy when I got them. Seems to be a popular power lunch place, but I still felt the price point was reasonable. Entrée salads were in the $10-14 range, pastas were under $20, and the hangar steak w/fries was $24.
One last point of note: the hostesses were surprisingly dressed kinda provocatively given the atmosphere of a swanky place and were wearing HEAVY makeup. It was a little awkward to bring a client when the hostesses looked like they're from Hooters. Waiter and service though were pleasant and accommodated our requests obligingly.
wow, one of the best meats I have EVER had period. It really compares really favorably with Argentinian meet. The service was awesome, had some realy great wine.
Awesome lobster rolls. Order those.yumm.
Tempura onion rings. Average, but still good.
Filet Mignon on the bone. REALLY GOOD. I mean, REALLY.
Mojito Cubano - Yumm it was a good one too.
I was really happy and satisfied. Yey for HARRYS. Go there!
Brunch=amazing!
While this place is wayyyy downtown, sort of off the the beaten path, in the financial district, it was worth the subway and cab ride to get there for Saturday brunch!
All-you-can-drink mimosas, Bellini's, kir royales, bloody mary's and more are definitely worth it, and the lack of a crowd (at least at 1:30 in the afternoon) made it even more enjoyable.
There was a wide array of choices, from omelette's starting at $10 to hamburgers and crab cakes for $15-$20. All the egg dishes ordered at the table were amazing, and the crab cakes were nice and plump, and not too breaded. We also shared the lobster spring rolls for a appetizer, and they came with a really delicious sauce for dipping.
This is a fantastic brunch spot (if you live nearby that is)!
I have never had a bite to eat here, but I can speak to the bar, and it is pretty solid. Dark wood, long and nice bartenders.
A trip to Harry's makes one recall the Wall Street days of yore: white-collar shirts, lavish expense account dinners, Ronald Reagan, junk bonds, and what have you. The bar area is really only known as an after-work drinking scene. When the market soars, Harry's is packed. When the market collapses, traders converge on Harry's to drown their sorrows. Although its heyday may have passed, Harry's remains popular. It loses a star in my book for a recent up-tick in the douche factor of the crowd, who like to think of themselves as BSDs, but still remains a favorite. Be sure to grab a J&B on the rocks, its the Patrick Bateman special.
One of my NY favorites. Notably on Wellington Wednesdays -- A tradition harking back to 1972. Fantastic.
The dim restaurant is a magnet for Wall Street money. I prefer the smaller room in the center of the restaurant. Curved corner booth, near the back.
Staff is very attentive & friendly. En route to my table, I was greeted by every employee. During my meal, glasses were always full & plates replenished with warm rolls.
Unfortunately, the bread was tad on the dry side. Minus star. Maybe a little harsh, but I'm serious about my bread. My friend calls me Dr. Atkins' evil twin.
Otherwise, the experience is worth 5 stars.
Shrimp bisque: Surprisingly good - Not oversalted like many other places.
Harry's salad: Lots of tasty ingredients.
Beef Wellington: The highlight of the week. I *heart*
Salmon: Excellent sauce - Just the right amount of spicy.
Spinach side: Portion is small - Order extra if more than 2 are eating.
Hash brown: Maybe a bit dry. Chunks, not slivers.
Chocolate mousse: Didn't leave a lasting impression.
Warm apple crumble: Wonderful! Not too sweet. Flaky pastry shell.
Tea: Large mug, large teapot.
High recommend.
Now, can someone explain the novelty sized pepper mill to me? I'll guesstimate that it stands 2.5 to 3 feet tall. Have they EVER needed to refill that thing?
I come here all the time...when our vendor takes us out to lunch of course. It's just down the street, so proximity coupled with class is always a winner!
Great old boys feel and evidence that "power lunches" still exist can be found in many of the leather curved booths.
As for the food, the portions are large for a lunch menu, but what a menu! The Diver Scallops are amazing and today I had the Ricotta Ravioli with Smoked Chicken - gorgeous. The filling was smooth, and although the smokiness is still lingering in my mouth, it isn't unpleasant. I might need a mint before I go out later though.
The only downside to this place is the service...which is slow. What is it with the Financial District and slow service?
one of my favourite places. good food, good prices - the food is done properly, they know their business. not a posh place to go on a date or anything, but if you wanna good stake without going bankrupt - go here.
Harry's Steak is the best steakhouse in lower Manhattan, and one of the best in New York City.
Like Primehouse (another favorite of mine), it serves a filet on the bone that you should try at least once. The other cuts are also very good.
Harry's serves warm rolls -- a big plus that shouldn't be. Why do so many steakhouses not serve their rolls warm? The Canadian Bacon appetizer is as good as Luger's. The seafood appetizers are also winners.
Like Porter House, Harry's serves an ice cream sundae with all the fixings on the side so that it arrives in pristine condition rather than a slushy mess like most sundaes.
Harry's has good though not spectacular specialty cocktails (many steakhouses don't offer any cocktails -- I'm looking at you Ben & Jack's -- so this is high praise), a very good wine list, and an outstanding bottled beer selection (made all the better thanks to the ice cold mugs).
I have only two criticisms that Harry's could easily address. First, it does not offer sauces other than its steak sauce. I'd like to see at least Bearnaise added to the menu. Also, it serves the steak sauce in a communal bowl that goes from table to table. I'd prefer an individual saucer as is the case at most steakhouses nowadays -- more sanitary.
All in all, you cannot go wrong at Harry's, especially when entertaining clients. It's a gem in an area with otherwise mediocre restaurants. Tip -- try to reserve one of the two tables in the sunken area of the dining room for a very private dinner.
I happened upon Harry's one Friday night after work this summer. I was going out for after-work drinks with my work-mates, and after surveying the general mess that is the row of bars and restaurants along Stone Street, we decided that we'd better look elsewhere. Continuing down the street towards Hanover Square, we noticed a row of windows looking into a nice looking subterranean bar, and that it was half deserted. We decided to try it out, and we discovered that Harry's Cafe had a highly competent staff, a great specialty cocktail list, and even a few offerings for bar food to go with your drinks. Everybody was friendly, and the I-Banker after-work vibe seemed somehow to have been kept to a bare minimum. We were in heaven.
Week after week, we made Harry's our go-to place for Friday drinks. We got to know the bartenders and the waitresses. I even offered suggestions for new cocktails for their list, all of which the skilled staff were happy (and able) to make. I was constantly impressed by the extensiveness of their bar offerings; just try to imagine some kind of specialty liquor or cordial, and they probably have it. We're talking both kinds of Chartreuse here, although when I asked for a drink with it, I could have sworn I saw the guy dust off the bottle.
Unfortunately, the options down in the Financial District are very limited, and Harry's has been discovered in earnest. Gone are our favourite bartenders and waitresses, only to be replaced by cursory, unskilled staff who can't mix a mojito to save their lives. And whereas before we could always find a seat or a space at the bar, now the crowd of suits fills the place early and stays all night. It's basically turned into Ulysses Annex, just a little classier looking.
Seriously, this place has become a real disappointment, so if you're a Wall Street guy reading this, I'm begging you to stay away, because you guys have seriously ruined what was a formerly great place for people to hang out and not talk about their Patek Phillipe or that Mandy girl you picked up at PM last week-end. You've got all kinds of places down there to do that in. Let us have just one place for ourselves!
I can't speak to the atmosphere or decor as I order delivery via seamlessweb...but godDAMN their steak is good. Juicy and flavorful and tender and just the right amount of salt and seasoning. I wouldn't normally spend $28 with tax/tip on steak + fries (which inevitably arrive soggy since they're delivered in a plastic container..still delicious though) but i can expense dinner after 8pm.
Never thought i'd say this..but I can't wait to stay late at work thanks to this place!
One of the mandatory wall street hangouts. Excellent steak and service.
Not too bad. I've had better steaks, but I'm definately not complaining about the fillet I had. Service was very good - just the right amount of attention without being obtrusive.
Good place for a not too formal business dinner.
I was asked to leave this place on a few occasions (Not as many times as I was at McSorley's) I will say this. Great place for a meeting and the wall street crowd (if you like that) but the chicken fingers w/ honey mustard sauce got them one of their stars alone. Do not buy any stocks that the wing tipped crowd gives you a tip on but it can be fun. (unless you hate CNBC)
An average high end steak house that is located under ground. I had the Beef Wellington which was just ok. The wine list is overpriced. Too many loud brokers frequent this place to have a pleasant evening.
I haven't been here for dinner yet (it's definitely on my list) but the brunch here is amazing! On Saturday afternoons, they do a brunch special that includes free, unlimited champagne cocktails. Not just mimosas, either. Fancy stuff, too. Obviously free booze is great, but the food is absolutely amazing. I've had several items from the brunch menu (spread over multiple visits), and I've never been disappointed. You've got to try the eggs benedict. Made with bone-in ham/Canadian bacon. It's probably the best bene I've ever had. Period.
I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's also a good place for a nice, leisurely drink after work during the week (the bar gets a bit crowded with the happy hour crowd Thursday and Friday nights). Check this place out. You won't be disappointed.
Beef Wellington! Oh yeah! Great place to go for a business lunch. Sadly I saw the sign on the way out that they had a Scotch tasting the night before. Ah, dammit!! Would love to go back again next time I am in NY.
Bankers delight. Place is quiet and dimly lit, which is nice after a long day of work or a long night out (I go for brunch mainly). The waiters are very helpful and very truthful. There is one young french waiter with blond hair that will set you straight if you have any questions about the food. The cocktails are good. Brunch rocks, unlimited blood orange mimosas. They seemed a little diluted with OJ, but it was okay cause I got to drink about 8 or 9. They did pressure me to stop ordering after the table was cleared (mentioned they had a group of guys that came in every weekend and had 20-30 each and was killing them - thanks shitheads for ruining it for everyone else). Anyway, the hanger steak is good for the price and the dock confit mushroom hash for brunch is on point, I can eat a salad bowl of that stuff. The bacon was very good too. Steak sandwiches are good for lunch. Not a hit or miss place, service is always the same.
An unbelievable great suprise!
HAHS used to be the quintessential Wall Street Institution......about 20 years ago that is.
Now that the NYSE is a museum, and most wall street firms have moved to midtown (that happened over 10 years ago), the area around HAHS has become......whoda thunk? residential.
Sure, there are still office buildings on Water Street, and Goldman and Merrill are still downtown...but let me get back on subject.
HAHS has been totally updated in terms of decor, yet still has retained the charm with certain important architectural details of the 150 plus year old building being retained.
I visited on a snowy winter night. The glow of the burnished wood, roaring fireplace, and mellow lighting made Harry's quite attractive inside.
Service was polite and informed. Try finding that these days in most Manhattan establishments.
Food is high end steakhouse. Fresh shellfish and fine cuts of cooked fish as well. Sides were great ...creamed spinach, home fries, etc to compete with any place in NY. Oh yeah ...the wine list.....not huge but some great selections if the wallet wil allow....
God bless you...Harry's son....for modernizing a great restaurant while keeping the tradition as well.
Terrific steak and a nice atmosphere. Not the most interesting restaurant but definitely reliably good.
