What I did for my birthday:

-took pictures with a flying car
    -opened a door using "Alohamora"
-got sorted into a house at Hogwarts
-jumped off the Hogwarts Express into a fun-filled land of props
    -studied a Bogart's cabinet
    -pulled up a mandrake
    -sat in Hagrid's chair
-learned Cedric Diggory (though not Robert Pattison) was in the Prisoner of Azkaban for all of 3 seconds in a Quittich match
-apparently I've seen someone die because I saw a baby thestral, along with a Horntail Dragon
-looked at Kreacher up close....his skin is practically falling off his body!
-saw the sign of Voldemort, a dementor and Death Eater's!  Plus a frozen Colin!
-entered the Great Hall and saw the robes of both Dumbledores
    -gazed at yummies from Honeydukes!
-bought lovely goodies in the store where the nice lady gave me the employee discount, although wrong museum!  ;-)

Could I ask for anything more on my birthday?  I doubt it.  And how can we top all this next year!?

Seriously though, it's here through September and everyone who likes the books/movies should see it.  I thought the price was steep as well, but they made it worth it with all of their theatrics!  Go after 5pm.  Cheaper and less people so you can actually see something!  Enjoy casting charms!

If ever you wanted to feel like you were living in the Harry Potter world, then this is the exhibit for you. I love every minute of this. The exhibit officially opens April 30th, but this weekend they were having a friends/family preview for MSI employees. Big shout out to my friend Dana for hooking me up with a ticket.

Here is some info from website: This world-premiere exhibit--opening April 30, 2009--is your chance to experience the craftsmanship of more than 200 authentic artifacts from the Harry Potter films, displayed in settings inspired by the film sets.

The exhibit actually makes you feel like you are walking into J.K. Rowling's magical world of wizards, witches and magic. The H.P. geek within my was jumping for joy at all the memorabilia from the 6 films. That is right 6 films--the exhibit contains stuff from the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince film coming out in July. So, I feel pretty fortunate to be amongst the first muggles to see it.

Alohamorra!! If you do not know what that means, then run to the bookstore & get yourself some Harry Potter books--ASAP!! Oh and you have pretty much lived in a cave your whole frigging life. Man oh man, did the Warner Brothers & M.S.I. totally OPEN the door the Harry Potter movie world to us regular Muggle folks. Bet you did not know I was such a huge H.P. dork--well, I am and I am proud of it.

The exhibit is humongous and ever so entertaining. Even if you are not a massive fan, you will get a kick out of all the effort put into making this world come to life. You get to experience parts of Hogwarts from classes, to sleeping quarters, to seeing moving portraits, and the Great Hall. You also get to feel as though you are walking through the Forbidden Forest, Hagrid's Hut, and also the Quidditch Pitch. There is even a section on the dark side, which was flipping fantastic (little children could get a wee bit frightened).

While seeing all the stuff on the big screen is truly great, the exhibit makes it come to life in a whole new way. You get to see all the care of details that goes into the clothes, the wands, and the props--it is truly something else. Even if you are not a fan, I highly recommend this exhibit.
PS: one downside to the experience is that all the people working it are required to speak in a British accent--ugh!! It sounds so fake & horrible--good thing they do not talk much otherwise it would have ruined part of it for me.

    Here are some details:
    Runs: April 30-September 27, 2009
Cost: Combination tickets (good for general Museum admission and Harry Potter: The Exhibition) are $26 for adults, $25 for seniors and $19 for children ages 3-11. Between Museum closing and 9 p.m., exhibit-only tickets are $18 for adults and seniors, and $15 for children ages 3-11.

Under my very cool exterior, I'm a geek at heart.  I ain't skerd to admit it.  So when I found out about the Harry Potter Exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry, I knew I had to round up a small posse of fellow fans and totally geek out.

If you read the books or love the movies you need to get to this exhibit immediately.  As a loyal book reader, but having never seen the movies, it was awesome to see how the set designers imagined the world of Harry Potter.  Seeing the actual actor's costumes (how creepily sexy is Gary Oldman's Sirius Black costume?), props like wands, potions, the Golden Egg and Umbridge's collection of cat plates and kitten stationary was so very cool.  The attention to detail is amazing... right down to the embossments on the belt buckles of the Malfoy's clothing.

It's mostly looky, no touchy, but you can pull up some Mandrakes out of their set and listen to them scream, shoot some Quaffles through the Quidditch hoops and sit in Hagrid's oversized chair at various stops throughout the exhibit.  Pretty bitchin'.

Its $26 for non-museum member adults to gain entry, but its money well spent.  You can buy your tickets online and pick the time you want to enter the exhibit.  Since they only let in a set amount of people every 15 minutes, you can move around fairly easily without severe overcrowding.  Because let's face it: When you're engrossed in reading all of the Ministry of Magic decrees on the wall, you really don't want to deal with a bunch of people waiting behind you to read them too.  The museum does a nice job of giving everyone enough time to get through the exhibit at a nice, leisurely pace.

There's a cool gift shop at the end of the exhibit path.  While I had to physically restrain myself from buying a glittery Harry Potter t-shirt, I may or may not have purchased a Sirius Black magnet for my refrigerator.

I had a blast geeking out here with my friend Suzy! We're both huge fans of the books and movies alike and were really excited to check out this exhibit.

Just an FYI - If you buy tickets for weekday evening hours, starting at 5pm and going to 8pm, you can get them for the discounted price of $18.

When we first walked in, we were with a small group and a Brit-accented greeter gave a few brave volunteers a chance to try on the sorting hat, in order to see which house they belonged to. It was a very fun and entertaining way to start such a magical journey into the world of Harry Potter.

The details that went into the costumes, sets and props, that made Harry's world come alive in the movie versions, totally amazed me. I couldn't help but think how much fun it would be to have a helping hand in making such wonderful, magical things.

Some of my favorites included pieces of Delores Umbridge's study complete with her cat plates, pink suit, and the detention pen she makes Harry write with. You know, the one that caused his blood to be used as a replacement for ink, Hermione's Yule Ball Dress, sitting in Hagrid's chair, pulling up the Mandrakes, throwing the Quaffle ball through the Quidditch hoops and so much more.

This is a great exhibit for Harry Potter enthusiasts, no matter how old you are. I'm sure glad I saw this exhibit and now I want to watch the movies again to see if I can spot some of the details I may have missed upon the initial viewing.

I've done a couple other "geeky" exhibits: Star Wars at the Museum of Science and Industry and the Lord of the Rings Exhibition in Indianapolis.  Both were great and full of details and tiny nibblets of geekery to make the die-hard fans feel special.

Harry Potter was equally awesome.  It starts off simple enough with the brit-speaking greeter doing a shtick with the sorting hat which tickled big and little kids alike.  But the true magic started for me in the next chamber where on several screens are shown a montage of clips.  It's not spectacular by themselves, but when the wall opens and you're bathed in the headlight of Hogwart's Express, I dare you not to grin from ear to ear and skip a little bit when you step to the next room.

The Exhibit is chock-full trinkets, doo-dads, props, clothes and sets straight from the films.  Some personal faves were Lupin's costume and his cabinet from DADA class, Umbridge's office, weeeeee Harry's sweater from the first movie, Sirius' dapper duds, the candles floating from the ceiling in the Great Hall, throwing the quaffle, the creepy mood around the Death Eater's display, and the tiny print on the Educational Decrees.  Look closer, the last line says "Blahblah blahbl ah blahblahblah...." :-D

Big, small, old, young, if you're a fan on any scale this exhibit is fantastic.  Go now while the kids are still in school!  And don't forget to check out the Ford Anglia by the ticket counter.
