If you live on the U of M campus and you are poor then you need to get to Harris Canvas.  They are this crazy survivalist store that is filled with cheap military surplus, cold weather gear and camping stuff.  All my spring break camping trips were outfitter here (tip: don't buy the cheapest tent avaialbe.  Go for a mid-range one with a decent rainfly.  You can't go wrong with Eureka.  You may be better off renting, if you can't afford it.).  I still have a pair of gloves I got here 15 years ago and they are still the warmest ones I own, which I dig out when it gets really, really cold.  

Also this store is just an interesting place to browse.  It has an ax-man kind of feel to it, with perhaps a bit of Unabomber thrown in.
