Ok, "Block Island (as overheard from a guido booze bag- is that PC?)
is Rhode Island's ISLAND!!"
Leave your Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard sense of entitlement at the dock. Let loose and allow yourself to enjoy the "smallest town in the smallest state."

You want to eavesdrop? ok, well you've struck blue collar gold! You want to get drunk? what are you waiting for?
You want to stay in a reasonable clean hotel- right off the ferry? stay here.
4 girls 3 nights $163 each. Deal! You get a complimentary continental breakfast of stale bagels- but who care's it's free! Do yourself a favor and request a non striped wall paper room.
You hear that? non- striped wall paper!  I thought I was in a 4 walled magic eye poster. I had a great time, and you will to: If you leave your pretention at the door.

interesting facts:
the stairs are slanted
the place is old
there are no skunks on block island
no a/c
you can sit on the deck in the wicker chairs and watch the people come and go (as you sip your winebeervodkapinacoladagin&tonicmargarita).

eeeek!!!!!!!!!!!  gross, dirty, ew.  need i say anymore?

We booked for mid August, maybe a month ahead only (we weren't sure we could make it to the wedding till a month ahead). This is the most expensive time to go, but for weddings you cannot choose the date :-)

Anyway, not cheap.  We went with a 3 yr old and a 6 month old.   We couldn't wish this weekend over quick enough, sadly so, because the island is not too bad.  I like a couple stores there a lot, and the beach we saw was nice.  I would recommend a car, take it by ferry, or rent one if possible, walking is not so fun, and dangerous in those narrow straits on the island.  Lots of cabs, but kinda pricey if you want to go a lot of places.

Only a shower, no tub (hard to bathe a 3 yr old, impossible to bathe a 6 m old).  But that's fine (almost...) if the shower was not green-black from some unknown otherwordly bacteria that might have been growing there since the 60's. Really, the shower and sink could never EVER have seen a smidgeon of cleaning liquids, organic or otherwise.  I was dying to go buy a bottle of bleach, 10 sponges, and gloves and a mask, but stuck to wearing flip-flops and minimized any contact with the bathroom, if possible.

One queen size bed, and only walking room around the one side.  Every other room was sold out.  No airconditioning, which is normal on this island they say, but this weekend was ungodly HOT!!!  And if you have kids you might know they don't like sweating and sleeping when really hot...  Oh, I forgot to add, no curtains...  Just thin blinds, that do nothing for keeping any sunlight out of the room.

Oh ok, I know you don't want to hear ALL of it, but really...  The main stair case looks ready to fall in, not just faintly crooked, structurally unsafe, how can this be legal?  We were also on the third floor, which made it really extra hot in our corner room, possibly the worst room in the hotel/motel.  I would've killed for a Hampton Inn that weekend...! :-)

The carpets were so black and dirty in our room (and the rest of hotel) that my daughter who was crawling had black knees, feet and hands after a couple minutes on the floor only....tell me that's not gross?  We spread an extra blanket on the floor at least it was still it's original green and we could see no visible dirt on it, the girls played on that.

And the wait staff at nearby restaurants had only to hear where we stayed to give us a pitying look, yes, that bad.  Don't eat at the restaurant there, staff is not the friendliest, they look very unhappy...maybe because they hate working in dirt too.

Anyway, felt like we were in a Stephen King novel, I wish we booked a bit earlier so we could've stayed in a cleaner joint, but at least we were there and we can share this experience with someone else.  For what it's worth.
