San Diego, CA
This is my FAVORITE vegetarian restaurant (granted, I have not tried that many veggie restaurants...). But if all vegetarian food taste like how this restaurant's food tastes like, then I would have no problem going vegetarian (I think..)!!
My family and I come here often and that's just what we did today. Usually, my parents order dishes, but this time I ordered some too!
This is what we got (mind you, I'm not sure if this is exactly what the dishes are called because my parents order in Chinese):
1. Sesame pancakes
2. Eggplant tofu claypot
3. Bean curd + fake pork
4. Some...vegetable.. (Hahaha, sorry I don't know the name of this vegetable in English. But it was a very simple dish, but SOOO good.. I know this doesn't really help, but we just asked our waiter what their fresh veggies were and picked one.)
5. Vegetarian liver + mushrooms (at least...I think...this is what it's called..!?)
Anyway, the point is... EVERYTHINGGG here is sooo tasty. Another dish I'd recommend is their bamboo shoots w/ fake pork strips. SOOOOOO GOOD. omg. -

If you've ever eaten at Happy Family Vegetarian off Colima in Rowland, or any of their other locations, you will find a very similar if not identical menu here at Happy Veggie Garden.
This restaurant is very tidy, and serves fresh, piping hot food. This trip, we ordered Chicken Nuggets with Basil, Shredded Bean Curd with Bamboo, and another dish with Snow Peas, Lilly bud, and Red Nuts.
The chicken with basil is crispy and well seasoned on the outside and moist on the inside. The texture is that of real chicken only slightly stringy.
Shredded Bean Curd with Bamboo is lightly spicy. The crispy bite to the bamboo is a pleasant treat.
The Snow Peas, Lilly bud, and Red Nuts was a pleasant surprise that my fiance ordered. It was a nice vegetable stir fry with a light sauce. The Lilly buds give a starchy component akin to a potato and the red nuts (actually re-hydrated dried jujubee) bring sweet to contrast with the salty sauce.
While Happy Veggie Garden serves up great food in a bright and clean environment, service is lacking. Being one of only 5 tables being served, I found that too much time passed before our server returned to take our order after seating us. She disappeared again when she brought our food. I repeatedly had to waive down a busy busboy for water, boxes and our check. The server returned again only to collect the bill. We left a smaller tip than usual.
Overall Happy veggie garden provides great Chinese vegetarian affair that even a die-hard meat eater can appreciate. It may not be a perfect substitute, but comes pretty darn close in flavor and texture whether its "fish, chicken, or beef."
I'll be back, but I'll probably go back to Happy Family first for better prices and more at attentive service. -

Happy Veggie Garden meets vegetarian. Vegetarian is instantly hooked by the rich aromas, bright colors, and texture of food. Whether tofu, soy, or mushroom based-- it tastes GOOD. The fish is fishy, the chicken is stringy and chewy, the tofu is fried just right.
Pricier than normal Asian food but def worth a try! -

Probably the one of the best vegetarian place I've been to in San Gabriel Valley. It's located inside the 99 Ranch Market. Lunch specials on the weekdays.

Chinese food that's vegetarian! They have a good combination of food dishes.. I forget which one I got, but all the food was great!
Bottomline: They have a good lunch special, and it's good for all days on the week except holidays. Just like typical Rowland Heights, be prepared for a bunch of drivers on the road. -

Happy Veggie Garden is my favorite Chinese vegetarian restaurant...not that there is a lot around the area, but still my favorite. :)
Their Vege House Chicken is my favorite! Vege Kidney with Basil is also really good. And they have what I always always crave: the almond puff pastry dessert. I have yet to find another restaurant that makes it as yummy as they do. Yum! Love this place! -
Review from Greg N.
I am just smitten with Garden's delights, so outta sight
I'm just beginning to unleash my rhymes, been there four times
Staring at the menu before me
Plethora of choices do I see
There are no meat nor meat by-products you can find
Try to be vegetarian for one meal
So much healthier you will feel
Release your inhibitions
Feel tofu on your lips
Brown or ma-po sauces both good
I eat so much I shove it in
Eating here, eating here
Will shed some fat from your hips
And make you regular. You should
Eat here as much as you could.
You'll eat a ton and still be thin
Plant yourself at Happy Veggie Garden
Get their mock house fried chicken with sesame, so good to me
Their bean curd pouches with veggies they're stuffed, juicy and fluffed
String beans and spinach fried simply
Fried yet won't get my face all pimply
And mock fish that's swimming in several sauces so sweet
Hot pots with vitamins and high nutrition
A delicious coalition
Release your inhibitions
Feel mushrooms on your lips
Made many ways it's so good
I eat so much I shove it in
Eating here, eating here
Will shed some fat from your hips
And make you regular. You should
Eat here as much as you could.
You'll eat a ton and still be thin

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the place was PACKED!
My god, eating vegetarian food is the cool thing to do.
Their dishes are all pretty good. My mom ordered a variety of "fish" and "chicken" dishes and I was very satisfied. I could barely taste the difference between the orange peel chicken and other orange chicken I've had. Vermicilli spicy noodles are YUMM!
You also get this tasty Asian bread when you wait. I like to put soy sauce on it.
Healthy food. I definitely recommend! -

It's tough to bring flavor out of vegetarian food. It's especially difficult when you can't use garlic or onion. Happy Veggie does a commendable job of offering a variety of dishes that imitate other Chinese dishes or stand on their own as specifically vegetarian dishes.
The restaurant can get very crowded at peak meal times an the tables aren't placed particularly well so expect some elbow brushing with other patrons and waitresses.
The dishes that aren't trying to be something else are clearly better. Things like tofu dishes and the hand roll were surprisingly good.
Service is less than stellar because they're always in a rush. Just be patient and expect some odd behavior on occasion and things will be fine.
If you need to eat vegetarian food, this is a decent place to be. The food is food for what it is and you might find yourself really enjoying some dishes. -

STIR FRY UDON was good. full of flavor.
VEGETARIAN KIDNEYS was too light. even the basil leaves lacked flavor.
overall, i wouldnt come back again. afterall, this isnt my favorite vegetarian restaurant. -
Review from Tony L.
This is one of our favorite spots to get some yummy vegetarian nomnom's. It's located inside the ranch 99 plaza on Nogales near the back entrance. The food here is always delicious with a nice selection of your traditional chinese foods. But of course all dishes are vegetarian! Although if you no one told you your taste buds probably couldn't really tell the difference.
One of our favorite dishes is definitely the pumpkin bisque with puff pasty. The soup itself is served in a huge ceramic soup bowl with a large puff pastry baked ontop. The soup is always super creamy yet perfectly cooked. If you're a lover of lobster bisque or just bisque's in general this is definitely the dish to try!
Other favs include any of the "chicken" dishes like the popcorn basil chicken or orange chicken dishes. The veggie chicken tender literally taste like chicken nuggets somehow!
The waitresses are also always very nice and service you with a smile. Although sometimes they get really packed with only 1 waitress so the wait time might be a little slow. But otherwise, they're always pretty attentive. -

Best Chinese ever. Totally veg. Been going here for the 20 years. Whenever I go to LA, I have to stop by here. Best Chinese in world potentially. Not greasy, served fresh and hot. Especially like the folded bean curd with mustard greens and soybean.

I'm not a vegetarian, nor will I ever be one. That being said, Happy Veggie Garden is still decent. Sometimes you forget that you're not eating meat.
They serve you porridge with green beans inside or rice. You can get brown rice for an extra $1. Additionally, you get a fried bread roll that's soft on the inside.
There are so many items on the menu that you usually have no idea what to pick. The food can get pretty oily though.
Things I recommend to order:
1. Eggplant and Tofu Clay Pot
2. Orange Peel Chicken
3. Sweet and Sour Pork
4. Fried Taro in Sweet Sauce (aka chicken nuggets)
5. Mustard Greens, with Beancurd Sheets
6. Bamboo with Fake Pork
7. Ma-Po Tofu
8. Spinach Soup
9. Fake Fried Anchovies (looks like little seaweed strips)- my favorite!
Don't bring any food with meat inside because they will get mad at you. When I was little, I brought in California Rolls and almost had to go out of the restaurant.Listed in: Chinese

This is my family's favorite hot spot!
weither it is mother's day, birthdays or even just to go eat out with the family, this place is the number one kick it spot for our cIan!
I even started to incorporate some catch up dinner with friends here too,
one less person intaking my animal friends... =(
anywhoot-
They have the best VEGETARIAN Orange peel chicken- which is a number one pick and a must order plate! I always always order this..and practically everyone enjoys this dish..
I also really like their wannabee fish chips, basically made out of seeweed and dried mushrooms- Delish!!
hey peeps..don't knock it till u try it! -

Diamond Bar, CA
We used to dine here every weekend until they switched ownership. From there, the service has been horrible. This happens several times especially with this particular deep-voiced stalky Asian waitress (who might be part owner with her greed) that pretends she forgot to cancel a few items we didn't order...or she might say they are too busy so there are some dishes they cannot serve today ( even when the place is not full ) and she will recommend pricey alternatives. Took them 1/2 hr to give us water and for refills. Totally understaffed and multiple mishaps with this waitress that I will never return to this place. I would like to rate it zero stars but can only chose 1 star.... A great alternative would be the real and original Happy Family in nearby RH plaza, 2nd level.

This restaurant has an impressive selection of vegetarian food. Many common meat dishes are offered vegetarian-style here and they taste quite similar. The staff is friendly and the service is good.

Customer service here is good. Very attentive and nice. Decor is simple and its inside the plaza. Food is pretty unique but i'm not a huge fan of this restaurant. I thought the food was missing on flavor. I would probably say the only thing that was pretty good was the sesame pancake. Everything else was okay. I prefer the other vegetarian restaurant on Valley, San Gabriel next to Yoshino.
Parking is annoying because it's inside a plaza and with Class 302 so parking is hard to find. -

I was the MAYOR of HAPPY VEGGIE GARDEN!
I first came here with (I think the reviewer's below me, Daniel Tan's wife lol)
I HATE VEGGIES, lets just say that.
GREENS ARE FRIENDS, NOT FOOD.
but oh my gosh, I fell in love with this restaurant.
Their "chicken" katsu appetizer was so SOOOOO good
even better than a real "chicken katsu" :P
Their steamed fish was also oh-so tasty.
I love this place, thank you for being my VERY FIRST vegetarian restaurant that I fell so deeply in love for. -
Review from Ray S.
Whittier, CA
I love this place. I give it give stars for the food alone. My review may lean towards the negative, but I go here at least once a month, if not more. The service isn't the best, but the food is worth the wait. (if you end up getting your complete order). If you go out of your way to flag down a waitress, you'll be fine.
The orange peel chicken (soy) is one of my favorites. As a former meat-eater, it reminds me of the chinese food I had growing up. The steamed buns (with condensed milk?), steamed gyozas, fried rice, hot & sour soup, mongolian beef, eggplant & tofu claypot, and kung pao chicken are all excellent. I try something new every time i go.
Parking can be a pain, and don't be surprised if your car is dinged by someone opening their doors next to you whether you're in the car or not. It's a tight squeeze, and people don't seem so friendly if you aren't asians. But, the restaurant itself has plenty of seating, and is rather nice inside.
The menu is not in any type of order, and the staff sometimes mixes up your order or has trouble understanding what you want unless you point it out on the menu. They are friendly though, and eventually get the order out.
Despite the hardships, you'll leave satisfied as the portions are generous, and the prices are fair. They also close at a certain time in the afternoon, so be sure to check their hours before going.
On a final note, this place reminds me a lot of happy family restaurant. Which, I also love. But I like it just a bit more as far as food options and quality.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Jonathan K.
Irvine, CA
Amidst a general dearth of vegetarian restaurants, Happy Veggie Garden stands out as a champion of the cause. Unlike some vegetarian restaurants, which can come across as crippled versions of their omnivorous counterparts, Veggie Garden takes much noted pride in its all veggie selection. Inside the restaurant, televisions scroll through impressive displays of glistening vegetable dishes and elegant puff pastry deserts. The images showcase Veggie Garden's extensive entrée selection while simultaneously helping new diners wade through an unfamiliar menu. The confluence of food and ambiance demonstrate that vegetarian cuisine is not a compromise, where something is reluctantly given up or sacrificed, but more like an ethnic food--something to be tried, savored, and appreciated.
The flavor of Veggie Garden is distinctly Chinese, which nicely complements ingredients that would typically be served bland in Western dining. The Chinese have a long history of incorporating vegetables as staples of their diet and their use of ancient sauces and aromatic flavorings add sort of culinary cadence to this zestful fare. Among my favorites are the aptly named Buddha's feast, an assortment of lightly sautéed mixed vegetables and tofu, and the Sizzling Tofu, a heap of lip-smacking tofu served sizzling hot on an iron plate. For those unable to forsake their carnivorous palettes, the menu includes a decent variety of faux meats, mostly chicken and seafood, incorporated into dishes with other vegetables. If going this route, I recommend picking something the closely mimics the texture of the original food, such as abalone.
If great tasting food wasn't enough to satiate hungry diners, the icing on the cake is that Happy Veggie Garden is very inexpensive. A recent visit there with a group of four cost only about $40. With such a wide range of delectable, healthy, and recession proof options, there's no reason not to eat here. -

Overall, an excellent restaurant. It is very clean, food is well prepared and fresh, and the general ambiance is pleasant. I definitely plan on coming here more often, especial during lunch when they have cheaper prices. It's a good place for a large group or family as well.
I tried the shark fin soup, excellent. The Kung pao chicken, awesome. The udon pepper noodles, pretty good!
And it's all vegan, fresh and tasty! -

"4 Stars" for food.
A great variety to choose from. It's one of the better Chinese vegetarian places around. Their fried pork chop, the one that's an appetizer is really good.
"2 Stars" for service or lack of.
I remember going there once years ago and waiting around 15 minutes after no one taking our order and seeing other customers seated after us being served. Not sure if it's a non-Chinese or outsider thing I don't know. So these days I rarely go back. Poor service seems to be a trend.
Slightly better service at Happy Family down the street and food's pretty similar. -

Merry Xmas to me...for the first time in 26 years, I witnessed my fob father SUGGESTING we go to an ALL VEGGIE restaurant for Xmas eve lunch. And he didn't make me gag nor make fun of me for a whole hour and a half. They get 4 stars just for being open on Xmas eve and having immediate seating.

soo some may think that vegetarian and 'yummy tasting' dont go in the same sentence but surprisingly, happy veggie garden makes it happen!
keep in mind that everything here is vegetarian and all meat products are made from soy or tofu
so things that are worth getting:
-vermicilli spicy noodles
-glazed orange chicken: this was so good and taste just like the real thing, except HEALTHIER!
-vegetarian meatball: these came in a soup with veggies and more thin glassed noodles. the meatballs were practically tofu and did not taste like a meatball at all. but i still liked it alot
-vegetarian fish in some sorta kung pao sauce. this sorta tastes like the real thing..and the kung pao sauce was pretty good.
overall i like the food here for a vegetarian place and its better than Sweet Veggie, in my opinion. service was okay and restaurant is clean. The good thing about eating at a vegetarian restaurant is that you dont have to feel bad about eating a lot and over stuffing yourself since everything is really healthy :) -

Veggie garden in meaty and fishy flavors.
Vegetarian cuisine comes in greasy chicken, shrimp, crab... other than vegetables are actually artificial coloring and imitations.

Great vegetarian Chinese food. It's located inside the 99 Ranch supermaket building, towards the front entrance of the supermarket itself.
Sounds odd, but I highly recommend the Orange Peel "Chicken." -
Review from Elena I.
San Luis Obispo, CA
I really, really wish they would open up a chain of these restaurants in every city. They know how to cook almost anything from vegetables, tofu, and seitan. I recommend anything made from tofu "skin." It is actually a soy product that has been rolled out paper thin and then rolled up again, sautéed or braised with wine , soy sauce, garlic, and greens. I've also had the veggie "shrimp," ( not fishy but still good,) the sesame "ham," (amazing; it supposedly tasted like the real deal, but I wouldn't know,) and the flavorful BBQ "pork." I'm not a fan of fake chicken-- it tastes bland and slightly fake. The veggie tofu dumplings are a must, but don't forget to dip them in a mix of sesame oil, soy sauce, and chili sauce. The almond tea with puff pastry baked on top is the best way to end the meal.
Eating at the Happy Veggie is the best part of driving to Palm Springs. -

Wow, I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. Well this is my all time favorite. I posted pic's already of the foods we have eaten. I took my carnivorous nephew and niece here and they ate it all up. The hot & sour noodle soup, chicken nuggets with basil, kung pao chicken nuggets, pumpkin bisque. Oh my I can go on forever. So delicious.
*There is only one problem, there is a waitress there that always gets the order wrong. When you are ordering, she mocks everything you say. Wish I knew her name, but when she is not there, best experience ever. -

Inside a shopping center with the 99 Ranch Market. Casual family restaurant.
We tried a few things. Dumplings: didn't like too much, too big, not much flavor. Eggplant dish: was okay for me. Shrimp dish: didn't like it, didn't appreciate that they tried to mimic shrimp color/stripes, nay I can do without that.
I'd like to try other dishes but service was not so good. So I don't really feel like returning unless we have not many other options. -

My favorite place in Rowland Heights! Possibly my favorite anywhere in terms it's combination of yumminess and price.
You can't go wrong with:
- House Special Chicken - AMAZING!!! My favorite hands down. The "chicken" are mushrooms fried in the most delicate batter, and delicious sauce. Crisp, and delicious.
- Seaweed with basil - Just yum, and healthy too!
I always order these two, and usually another random one. Most are good, some are just okay, but if you want the BEST, get the two above.
You can also request "No MSG" and surprisingly still VERY good.
Go here! Order House Special Chicken! Then return every time you are in the neighborhood, like I do. -

Maybe it was an off night?
Almond tea with puff pastry - not available tonight. I was positively drooling at the earlier reviewers' mentions of the almond tea with puff pastry, but alas, the kitchen was too busy to make it. Major disappointment. They told me to come back next week. Right.
Turnip cakes - not available tonight. Once again, we were told the kitchen was too busy. Frustrating.
Sorta bothers me that each portion of rice/porridge costs $.
House Chicken was tasty (just like Happy Family's). String beans were well-seasoned and had a great crunch to them. I would comment on our third and final dish we ordered - sizzling udon - except we never received it - so we were forced to cancel the order.
Service was friendly once you get the waitresses' attention - but that's difficult to do since the restaurant is severely understaffed, especially in the kitchen. Surprisingly nice ambiance considering the upscale Ranch 99 location.
I'm not going to go out of my way to return here - and i'm still craving that almond tea with puff pastry. -
Review from Jenny S.
another vegetarian restaurant winner in my book!
I didn't know chinese cuisine could be savvy about veggie cuisine, i'm so used to seeing the pigs hanging in the window and what not!
this place was an EXCELLENT choice for lunch because they have specials at the back of the menu, and each dish comes with your choice of bread and porridge or rice and soup!... the bread is like a steamed semi-sweet white bread (with noodle like texture inside) that has a deep fried shell.. ITS DELICIOUS (in the chinese comfort food way).. the porridge is very plain and the soup is a thick egg &corn soup
my mom and I ordered the lotus root and snow peas dish, great saltiness and CRUNCH to the lotus root. we also got their veggie rendition of deep fried sweet and sour pork, but its got TARO instead of pork! the sauce was a bit sour for me, but i liked the taro
for dessert.. well i was kind of tricked! my mom and i ordered two puff pastries (ORDER AHEAD since they take at least 15 minutes to prepare i think they said) one was the almond tea puff pastry the other was the pumpkin puff pastry that i had heard about on yelp, but actually didn't see on the dessert menu (hint number ONE)!.. now after my meal i HAVE TO finish off with something sweet, but NO NO NO that pumpkin puff pastry SLAPPED ME IN THE TONGUE, its actually a salty soup!!! i was pretty sad, but my mom traded me no problem, so the almond puff pastry satisfied my sweet tooth!.. it was my fault for assuming the pumpkin would be sweet
so don't go ordering the pumpkin one anticipating a sweet dessert!
free tea to drink during your meal!
OH and this place is on the INSIDE of 99 ranch market plaza -

I ordered the steamed oyster mushroom. It was one of the lunch specials. it was pretty good. Their porridge has mung bean in it which was pretty interesting. I didn't mind it. When you get the porridge, it comes with a fried bread bun. It's pretty hot so be careful but enjoy :)

I'm not a vegetarian but I like this restaurant. They have some tasty dishes that are both filling and satisfying. I like the regular vegetable dishes more than the fake meat ones. Though the fake meat ones are good, they are usually fried and that leaves me bloated for some reason.
They also have a lunch menu of about 30 dishes with the choice of porridge+Chinese bread or rice+soup. The portions are smaller than the regular menu. Overall, the dishes are delicious with authentic Chinese cooking.
Service is good. There is usually a wait on the weekends. The restaurant is located inside the 99 Ranch Market plaza. -

Rowland Heights, CA
came early on a weekday for lunch. i love when they serve tea without asking. thats the way it should be. what was even better was that it was served in these cute white ceramic pots, not the usual cheap metal ones u see. excellent.
our server was very nice and helped by recommending a few dishes. we settled on basil chicken nuggets, skin bean curd and spinach, and tofu and vermicelli casserole.
the basil chicken nuggets was probably the best, as it had the most flavor and meatiness of all. i thought the skin bean curd was excellent as well. theyr these triangle pouches of.. bean curd.. that are stuffed w/ some kinda cabbage filling. the crispness of the cabbage and the way theyr packed in emulates the feel of biting into and chewing striated protein, but its actually natural vegetable. brilliant dish. the tofu and vermicelli casserole is something i'll never get again. the flavor is so plain! it just tastes a bit earthy and a bit salty.
im definitely coming back. i like it here better than happy family. -

You almost know this is going to be good, legit vegetarian Chinese food when you walk in and see a table of full of Buddhist monks eating and laughing.
Their menu is sooo long it was hard for us to decide what to eat, so we just went with the most basic items. Try the pumpkin soup puff pastry. It was really rich, creamy and delicious. We also ordered the kung pao "chicken" and black pepper udon, which were both really yummy. If you have a hard time deciding, just look at their tv's. They have a slide show going of all their most popular dishes. -

Happy Veggie Garden is located inside the 99 Ranch Market in Rowland Heights. A friend suggested it to me once she learned that I recently went vegetarian, and we decided to meet there for dinner.
Everything she ordered for me was fantastic! The fried oyster mushrooms were amazing! And we ordered them as an appetizer - ohhh my - we ended up eating so many we almost didn't have room for dinner!
Then there was the squash soup, which was buttery and to DIE for. The fresh baked pastry topping was delicious as well. As well as the sweet and sour eggplant - which I had never had before, and was so good I went home and tried to make it myself :)
I don't recall all of the dishes we ordered, but everything was so tasty... we were stuffed and just kept eating.
I would highly recommend this to any veggie or meat eater in the area - if I lived closer, I would go there more often! -

Love this place!!! One of the few vegetarian places around, and it's very very good. My girlfriend and I came over today to try their dishes and we ordered the popcorn chicken with basil along with Oh O Gen (Uh A Jien). Our servers were very polite, and for a price of 10$, you get a great portion of your dishes, a pot of tea, hot and sour soup, along with rice!!!
Everything here tastes authentically good, and the lunch specials here are especially cheap. I would totally come visit here again soon!!! FIVE STARS!1 Previous Review: Show all »
