Came in with a rubbing tire & Jamil took 10 plus minutes to repair it free of charge!
This is the kind of good will that keeps a customer loyal.  I've been to many other bike shops over the years and at some have spent 1000s of dollars.  Did they even offer me a couple of water bottles?  No!  That doesn't mean they aren't good folks; it means they don't understand the importance of "good will" in the form of an extra here or there when you purchase a new bike or a few minutes to repair a minor issue.  Granted, the shop wasn't busy when I came in.  Still, you can't go wrong with the kind of service.  Thanks again Jamil and cheers to all the good staff at Hank & Frank.

Terrible work, terrible service, overpriced. What more needs to be said? Oh, they're total assholes to boot.

I bought a bike a couple years ago from these clowns, I've done all my own work since. Slowly but surely correcting all the mistakes they made in assembly.

Everyone wants to support small, independent businesses. You are risking you're life riding a bike worked on by these guys. Go to REI, order online, Performance downtown Walnut Creek is much nicer and professional.

I went in to have a flat tire repaired. My wife had said the previous summer she brought the bike in for a flat tire, they charged her $10. I was told it would be ten dollars but ended up being charged $23 for the repair without explanation. Once again, the Schwinn has another flat but I won't be taking it to Hank & Frank's this time.

I have mixed feelings about Hank and Franks. I've had good experiences there in the past, so I should say I do like this store. The fixed my girlfriends bike when it broke and it allowed us to continue our ride, which was cool. They are knowledgeable and normally very nice.

My one "not great" experience was when I brought my new mail-order bike in to get the once-over tuning before I ride it. To be honest, it kind of felt like I was being dissed for daring to not buy a bike from a bike shop. There was a certain air of "we don't like your kind around these parts" coming from the manager.  Then I got quoted $100 for a complete bike rebuild, even though it just needed a tune-up.

Bottom line, if they aren't gonna make profit off of a sale, they'll get you on the service.

My problem was, I can't afford a good aluminum/carbon bike from a shop with quality parts on it. I had bought a Trek 1100 from APC Cycles of Change (check my other reviews) but totalled it (cracked frame in two places) in an accident. Ouch, $500 down the drain for two months of owning the bike.

So I need a new bike, and I have very little to spend on it. Every shop I went to was 2-3 times as expensive as I could afford and the ones I could afford were steel frame with off-brand parts. For the same money online, I can get an aluminum bike, carbon fork, all Shimano parts (derailer, shifter, wheels) for ~$400. So derrr, what am I gonna do?

I understand that this cuts into their business, but I was never going to be paying $100 for what I know is little work. I didn't appreciate being treated like some sort of bike leper because I didn't lay down a grand at a bike shop. I had bike in hand and money in the other, can a brother get some service now?

Instead, I had to walk my bike out the door...never to return. To b e fair though, they topped my tires off with air so I didn't have to push it home.

Friendly and courteous, not arrogant.  Informative, not too salesy.  Seemed to be focused on a good client experience, and not so much focus on commissions.

I'm a pretty serious road cyclist and have to express my gratitude to Hank & Frank's.  On my ride yesterday, I ended up throwing my front derailleur in such a way that it bent the cage to the point I couldn't even pedal the bike.  Hank & Frank was the closest shop.  At my request, they offered to loan me tools just to bend things back so I could make it home, but quickly took it themselves, worked on it for 5 minutes and had me rolling better than I would have been able.  "No charge, just an example of our work here" was what the guy told me as he handed me my bike back.

Looks charming from the outside, and even the name projects an image of a friendly shop, perhaps one run by an avuncular type with a twinkle in his eye and delight for seeing his customers happy.

But then you step inside.  I've done so maybe a half dozen times over the past five years, and only once did I like the experience.  Every other time, I felt like I was in the midst of hardcore bike snobs (the employees), who reserved any friendliness for those who were considering dropping 2 or 3 thousand on a bike.  Need a helmet and a water bottle cage, yeah, this is what we have, let me know if you want one of them.  Just bought two kids' bikes, totaling $500?  Well, I really don't know when they'll be ready.  The tube on of those bikes needs replacing and you've got little kids hanging all over you (and the store isn't busy) -- sorry, you'll have to wait awhile before we can fix that, and if you leave, you might get pushed back if we get busy.

    Much better attitude at REI.

My wife and I have purchased a number of bikes for ourselves and our two children over the years, just recently purchasing another for myself and one for my daughter and have always received courteous and knowledgeable service.  As a salesman with over 45 years of experience I know when I talk to an honest sales person and when they may be trying to "sell" me something rather than represent it.  They don't have inexpensive bikes, but then you don't go in a quality jewelry store to buy a Timex watch.

I went in because my bike's derailer had broken and to get it fixed.  They quoted me parts and labor to about $200 to fix the bike.  Its a great bike and I will fix it, but I started talking to Karen and she showed me what Hank and Frank's had to offer.

I told her my main concerns about being tall (6'3") and that I was riding more road than before.  We settled on a Kona bike and discussed the various models and differences between them.  I am in sales myself and she had a similar approach as I did.. be honest and do whats right for the customer based on their concerns.  I never felt like i was being pushed into a particular bike just because it cost more.  She did recommend a great bike however, it was a little out of my price range, but if it wasnt, I would have bought it based solely on her rec.

I settled on a solid Kona bike with an upgraded derailer; out the door it was $498!  I get free services for life which personally is a wonderful benefit of buying in the store. I live nearby and drink near the shop in berkeley so both stores are very convenient.

i have had dealings with Josh before too and he is extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

bottom line is that they took care of my needs and I dont feel any buyer remorse... so next time you want a bike, go see Karen or Josh or frankly any of the other guys and they will take care of you.

Shopped at several local bike stores & consider them the best value & positive experience I've ever had in a bike store. Short version: great staff, solid repair work, not cheap, but very reasonably priced. And they know the value of repeat loyal customers.

Long version: While riding Briones, potato chip'd my rear wheel & carried my sad Fisher hardtail into H&F, expecting the usual snobbery since I spend less than a grand on my ride. But to my surprise, they bailed me out, without trying to sell me a new high-end ride, offering to build some (relatively) inexpensive & reasonably light wheels w/ decent hubs. It was so pleasant to be treated like they could use my business, that I asked them to overhaul my antiquated thumb shifters. Not only did they humor my quirky requests for the ancient parts (to build/rehab beaters & klunkers for trail & commuting use), but they also took the time to discuss the finer points of chain cleaning & lubes. When they couldn't get some parts in stock soon enough, they substituted more expensive ones NO EXTRA CHARGE. This little "lagniappe" just cemented it, so we keep going back.
Since then every person I've encountered there (sales folks & even
mechanics!) has been courteous without a trace of condescension. Isn't an educated customer better than an entitled one?

I have a solid understanding of bike shops after having spending five years in the industry, so I tend to be very critical of bike shops.  So far I've had nothing but outstanding experiences with both the Oakland and Lafayette Hank and Frank shops. Their employees are well trained, well adjusted, and very helpful.  I've seen multiple instances of them going out of their way to help customers.  Great shop.

    UPDATE -

I've had a couple of great experiences here and one terrible one.

On the upside - some of the sales guys and mechanics have a great attitude and can be very helpful.  They also stock some DH parts that are hard to find without ordering.

Downside - I needed to replace the rear pivots in my Reign X.  I came in with the swingarm dis- assembled and a bearing kit in hand.  I could technically go to Home Depot, grab some bolts and do it at home myself, but I thought it would be good to support the local bike shop and save a little time.  Swapping the bearings is a 20 minute job tops if you have the Giant Maestro bearing tool (which they do).  Price should have worked out to $20-$30.  They wanted $80 for the work.

In this case the shop was blatantly inflating labor times.  It may have been the one employee, who knows.  For now I'm dropping my rating from 5 stars to 3.

I'll give them one more try for service and revise my rating based on that.

This place has a great selection... if you are willing to spend a bunch of money on a bike. I went with my boyfriend so he could get his biked check out because his gears werent working right and i looked around and every bike was over $1000! I understand that they are quality bikes and all but sheesh... carry some cheaper ones... a little kids tricycle was even $250... haha... i think thats ridiculous... since a child will grow out of it. The store had many employees who knew a lot of stuff but we still had to wait a while before someone helped us out. The guy was able to give my bf's bike a tune up and oil up the gears and it was working again... they wanted him to just replace the whole thing at first which would have cost his about $100! ... and all the bike needed was some oil... so i felt like they try to get the money out of you... I looked around at the bike accessories and such.. and ive seen a lot of the stuff they sell at a way lower price elsewhere... They sell a u-lock for $45 and ive seen the same for $18... so i think they jack up the prices in spite that there are people in the area that can afford the items. So unless you have tons of money to just throw away.. go ahead and come here... but you can go somewhere else.. and get the same stuff for a lower price if youre trying to save!

my hubby bought be a bike from h & f.  They are such a solid small shop with great selection, great service, and knowledgeable staff that respect and love what they do and bicycles.  they know a lot about everything you might ask and you can bring your bike in for service or tune up anytime.  it's one of those rare mom and pop type stores that just continues to make a lot of money because of word of mouth.

So I've been here a few times before but after the experience with my girlfriend I figured I should send in a review. They were really courteous and patient with her - she doesn't know a whole lot about bikes and they didn't seem to care at all about answering her questions. They even let her test ride a few bikes and in the end they got a good sale from us. Really nice people who work here.

i have to say that i don't go to hank/frank any more after consistently bad experiences years ago. they may have improved but i always found them to be inattentive on the sales side and not great on the service side. that being said, they have a new head of service so might be better on that end, but i'll likely never go back after how we were treated early on.
