The Hanford House earns all of its praise. Rooms range from $99 to mid 200s, and are worth it, especially when you factor in location and breakfast.
Their hospitality is 2nd to none, from checkin to checkout.

The rooms are comfortable, private (I usually shun B&Bs), and the breakfast is worth writing home about.

    Will be back.

I loved this little inn in Sutter Creek.  It was the perfect getaway for a jaunt up the hill from Sacramento.  The inn is a historical building, but the inside is modernized for your convenience.  We stayed in Cottage Room#1, as some of the rooms are in the 1904 house that is next door to the inn.  This room originally concerned me because it was facing the street, but Sutter Creek was exceptionally quiet at night, so I wasn't kept awake by the traffic on 49.  The room was quaint, and beautifully decorated, with soft sheets, a soaking tub, built in wall fireplace, and modern fixtures.  They have a flatscreen TV with a DVD player (the inn has many DVD's to borrow) and a hookup for Apple TV.  The inn was perfectly situated just on the edge of downtown on Hanford street and within a short walking distance from the cute town, shops and restaurants.  The proprietors were eager to help us find reservations and provide recommendations of eating venues.

The food was the best part of the stay.  You are greeted each morning with fresh, warm scones and a choice of coffee or tea and the paper on your doorstep.  After lounging in bed drinking tea and eating scones, it is time to saunter over to the inn for 2-3 courses of breakfast.  They keep hens on the property, so there are fresh eggs in the morning.  There is coffee, tea and juice available when you first walk in.  There is yogurt and granola waiting for you to help yourself as course #1.  The next course was some chicken apple sausage and fresh fruit.  Enough of a serving to enjoy but not fill you up so that you can enjoy the entree course.  The entree course varied both days we were there.  The eggs benedict is TO DIE FOR!  Light and delicious hollandaise accompany these poached eggs, surrounded by steamed spinach, cherry tomatoes, and sopressata on top of fresh artisan french style bread.  Truly delicious.  I loved our breakfast the first day as well:  fresh banana and chocolate chip pancakes accompanied by syrup served on top a candle warmer (nice touch!).

The place was definitely a "must come back" place for my hubby and I.  We weren't alone because three other couples were making reservations for their next stay as we were checking out this morning.  They do provide a 10% discount for returning guests as a nice incentive, but honestly, I would go there anyways.

    Yet another 5 stars for HHB&B!!! :)
my husband and i arrived after the set check in time (i believe 3 - 630).before we left our home, I was given a friendly call with instructions on where our keys would be. i thought that was nice.

we arrived about 710 pm and found the note and keys to our room. We had room #6 (british banker) and it was nice and clean. The note that was left for us, indicated we could help ourselves to any movies we wished to watch. (that came in handy!)

The inn was quiet (not sure if we had any neighbors) and the room was kept cool.

after reading previous reveiws, i COULDNT wait for the scones outside the door!! ( i was a bit anxious and kept looking at the clock to see if it was 730 yet!) THEY ARE DELICIOUS!!!!!

we choose the 830 breakfast time and had a definate gourmet breakfast!! YUMMMY!

    Robert was very friendly!!! :)

    We will definatley be back!!!

I have been dragging my feet on writing this review because I want the Hanford House to stay a secret (there's no chance that is going to happen!). I felt completely at home at the HH from the moment Robert (owner) opened the door for us. Robert was very friendly and an awesome host (he's also a lawyer, for those of you needing one...). The Hanford House was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and I honestly did not want to leave. Wine and cheese in the afternoon, delicious breakfast in the morning, warm scones outside my door when I wake up, and someone makes my bed. When can I move in? We will definitely be staying here again. I've already started scheming to get up there soon.
It really is a lovely place. Warms my heart to think about it.

My girlfriend and I wanted to get away for our anniversary weekend, have some relaxation and wine tasting. We struck gold at The Hanford House Bed and breakfast inn!
Great location on hanford street, walking distance to many shops restaurants and quaint eateries.
Althena greeted us in the early afternoon and gave us a warm tour. they have mini tvs and dvd player in your rooms, but they have a reading room, and a exclusive game room, with big screen tv, cable, dvds to go with your dvd player, and even cruiser bikes to ride around with! i really liked that.
the premises was kept very clean and immaculate. robert and althena do an amazing job at this place. parking was adequate and they make you feel as if you as staying in there home, as honored guests.
feel free to write your name on the walls in the wine tasting room/breakfast area! we sure did..saw some from as far back as 1985!
room was large and has everything you could want. ac and ceiling fan..i appreciate that!
very comfy bed.. i might reccommend them to upgrade to king size, but otherwise very classy and not lumpy at all.
morning could have been my favorite. they ask you at checkin when u want to eat the 3 course breakfast! thats service with a smile!
amazing scones brought right to your doorstep, great coffee and teas ready to enjoy, and really a nice clean healthy breakfast served to us by robert! we really enjoyed talking to him.
homemade granola and yogurt to start, with oj and milk. applewood slow smoked bacon... mmmmm, and to finish 2 sliced of warm french toast topped with banana and strawberry slices. a very nice touch on the presentation let me tell you!
we will be back again, since you are only 45mins away from us!

Awesome awesome stay.  The Inn itself is nice and homey without making you feel claustraphobic, like a lot of B&B's do.  The room was clean and fresh and comfy.

The scones they leave outside your door in the morning literally made both my husband and I go, "Oh my god!" when we tasted them, and I mean that in a good way.  They were so good!

Breakfast was good and the staff was super friendly and nice!  I recommend staying here if you get the chance.

Scones in the morning delivered to your door.  These are absolutely amazing!  Better than any scone I've ever had.

Our room was wonderful--very relaxing and inviting.  Nice attention to detail.

Right next to "downtown" Sutters Creek--so it was easy to walk out the front door and hit the shops.

Robert (owner) and staff are very friendly and available.

    A great, restful stay!

We loved it!  Spent a mid-week break in the Blue Room.  Quiet, comfortable, accommodating.  Cannot wait to go back.  Sutter Creek and the Hanford House are a little slice of Heaven.  Refresh spa next door has great prices.  I had a deep tissue massage--wonderful!  We spent our couple of days perusing the antique shops and wine tasting rooms of historic Sutter Creek.  The inn keepers at Hanford House are fantastic.  Breakfast is huge but delicious.  And if you can find a spot, you can leave your mark in the "bear" cave parlor.  :)

Fabulous B&B in an amazing town.
Took my husband here for a birthday gift. Our time in Sutter Creek was a pleasure from our arrival to our departure. Robert and Athena are amazing hosts, very friendly and accommodating, providing recommendations for anything and everything: what wineries to visit, where to have dinner, where to go during the day.
    And the breakfasts were amazing!!
I think we'll be back in the future.

We had an amazing experience at the Hanford House. Robert was awesome. Very friendly, cooked a great breakfast, and was an expert in the area. Even drew us some maps of a good drive to take and recommended some great wineries. Robert told me he was a lawyer by trade, met a girl from Sutter Creek and decided to live the small town life and run a bed and breakfast. Something so cool about someone who just does what they want to in life. It makes them happy, and makes their guests even happier. I'll be coming back!

As many have alluded to this is not your run of the mill B&B with funky furniture, old smells, etc. None of that here. Immaculate rooms (spring for a suite if you can-fireplace, flat screen TV, heated bathroom floors, jacuzzi tub). Scones, coffee and newspaper outside your door in the AM. Walk that off, then get ready for the best breakfast you'll ever have at a B&B. Sutter Creek is short on good places to eat. Well, Robert and Athena have plans for a bistro right at the Hanford House. It will be first rate I am sure as this couple settles for nothing less. I would not think of staying anywhere else in Amador County.

The amenities themselves, which were very nice, get a four-star rating.  HOWEVER, the service gets a much lower two stars.  I don't pay $250/night for simply a nice place to sleep.  I expect excellent service, as well.  Over the course of our stay, we called the hotel a total of 8 times, and never once got through to anyone directly.

We stayed there for only one night, a Saturday, in the Gold Country room.  In the early afternoon we attempted to get in touch with the hotel to see if we could get a last minute early check-in, since we'd be arriving earlier than planned.  We called first at 12pm, then at 1pm.  Both times the call went through to an answering service, which did nothing more than tell us they'd pass along our message.  We finally heard back from the hotel (they left a message) a few minutes before our scheduled 3pm check-in time.  When I tried calling them back two minutes later, guess who picked up - the answering service.

When we finally got to our room, it was very nice.  We'd splurged and ordered the $25-extra "fruit and cheese plate," though.  Obviously when you order an "extra," you're paying for the convenience of it, and don't expect it to be an awesome deal.  BUT, there were literally only FOUR BERRIES to constitute the "fruit" portion (two raspberries and two blackberries, if you're curious).  It was comical, in a sense.

Over the course of the evening and next morning, we tried at various times to call the "hosts" five more times, and each time got the answering service.  Our room was probably 68 degrees, and there was no thermostat for us to control the room temp, so we tried calling them to locate it (at this point, we discovered that the phone in the room didn't work, period, so we used our cell - and got the answering service.  The next morning during breakfast we asked the server about it, and she said the Gold Country room's temperature was controlled by a thermostat in a different room across the hall, so...).  We tried calling a couple more times on Sunday morning, to see when the paper and coffee would be delivered, since we're early risers.  Alas, we couldn't get in touch with anyone via phone, so we had to walk over to the front desk to inquire (FYI - the paper and coffee are delivered no earlier than 8AM).

Again, the room was pretty, but for $250 for a one-night stay, I expect excellent service.  Not only did this service fall short of excellent, it was decidedly sub par.  We definitely won't be returning to the Hanford House.

Last week, I traveled with my girlfriend and her family to the Sierra foothills for a wedding. For our accommodations, we were fortunate to have chosen the Hanford House Inn.

First, the inn is ideally situated right in the heart of the very picturesque Sutter Creek. From it's prime location, restaurants, antique stores and shops are all a short stroll (or a short ride on bikes that have been thoughtfully provided by the inn). The inn itself consists of an historic two-story brick building and an adjacent set of three cottage rooms. The rooms in the main inn are tastefully decorated in a mix of antique and period furniture. Some of the beds are the kind one imagines when reading the Princess and the Pea...high, big and fluffy. The ceilings must be 15' high and the rooms seem quite huge. They are very comfortable. We had two rooms in the main inn.

The cottage rooms (of which we also had two), had a very different feeling. The building was recently redone, and the rooms have a very clean, zen aesthetic. A sleek gas fireplaces with glass beads, contemporary furniture, and soothing earth-tone paints (think Pottery Barn/West Elm) set the mood. The baths were amazing with radiant heat in the polished concrete floors, rain dome showerheads, glass tiles, and clean modern fixtures.

I believe all of the rooms have Tempur-Pedic mattresses, small refrigerators, upscale Gilchrist and Soames bath products, soft luxurious and absorbent towels, televisions with DVD players and iPod docks.

Each morning, a tray with homemade scones, delicious coffee and/or tea, and a newspaper is placed outside your door. A nice breakfast that changes each day is served inside the main building in a room where previous guests have illustrated the walls and ceiling with their thoughts and comments.

And if all of this isn't enough, the innkeepers, Robert and Athena, are an incredible couple that truly enjoy what they are doing. Both have engaging personalities. Athena is the accomplished chef and has a keen eye for style and detail. Robert runs the front of the house and is always ready with spot-on recommendations and suggestions. He's also pretty funny.

The Hanford House, with Robert and Athena at the helm, is the kind of place you feel fortunate to have found...and one that you really don't want to leave.

This is our 5th year enjoying the hospitality of Hanford House. The owners, Robert and Athena, are quite gracious and enjoyable. We thoroughly enjoy their gourmet breakfasts and the whole ambiance of this B & B. If you're anywhere near the Sierra foothills, this is the place to stay. It's an excellent home-base for discovering wineries, shopping for antiques, or just enjoying a surcease from your hectic day-to-day life.

This was our first time at a B&B and we were skeptical; however, Robert has done a wonderful job with the Hanford House and we can't wait to come back!  We stayed here for a few days after our wedding to get some much needed rest and relaxation.  We stayed in a cottage room which was upscale, modern and romantic - not flowery as we thought all B&B's had to be.  The bed was the most comfortable bed we had ever slept on - we tried to steal it but thought they might notice us driving out with it on the roof of our car.  Breakfast was also amazing and the scones were to die for.  Unfortunately, we had to come back to reality but, as mentioned above, can't wait to come back!

PERFECTION.  Whether you are a die hard B&B'er or this is really not your "thing", Hanford House is here to impress.  Beautiful place, large rooms, very adorable, a mind-blowing breakfast (converted me to being an eggs benedict fan), great scones, all fabulous.  The selling point however that will keep me coming back was the absolute amazing hospitality from Robert Gordon, owner of the Hanford House.  He was born to do this for a living.  Friendly non-stop and full of helpful tourist stops and restaurants, I will not forget how perfect our stay was.  Thank you Robert, we will be back and we will be referring you to everyone!

I just stayed here this past weekend and it was AMAZING!  It was the first time I have ever stayed at a B&B, but I am already trying to figure out when I can go back.  The staff was great, helpful, polite, and nice.  The food was ridiculously delicious, especially the scones!  I need those recipes to stay sane.  We stayed in one of their cottages and had out our private parking, a balcony, and fire place.  I thought about stealing the bed, since it was the most comfortable piece of heaven I have ever experienced but thought they would notice.  It was so good I thought about skipping my wedding just to stay and relax in the room!   I cannot say enough good things about this B&B.  I would recommend anyone who was going to the area to stay here and I would recommend going to the area just to stay here.

What a perfect escape from the real world
Almost makes me wish I lived away from the city in the middle of nowhere (Almost = for two or three days)
So nice - super modern décor (my sister asked what did you stay in some 70's cabin)
Massive flat screen TV's and Granite counter tops
    Huge rain shower !!
Every need is thought out (the cupboard are stocked with every spice/oil one would need for cooking
The fridge had coffee, condiments and SoCo (although I imagine the latter was left over by previous occupants)
WiFi too !! Which I wouldn't have expected being so far out there
The Hot Tub was so clean absolutely massive and really hot but the VIEW for Godsake the VIEW !!! You could see the moon through the trees and the valley down below
The property also included secluded outlook spots that allowed you to see for miles
We had intended to only stay for one night but it was so amazingly good we stayed for two
    The owners are FANTASTIC
You can pick from a huge array of movies as well (plus they have direct TV)
15 min. from the wineries and Jackson

The room was very well decorated and there was ample room for my wife and I. We have already discussed returning to Sutter Creek and we will definitely stay at the HH.

This place has got to be the best lodging in the gold country. I took my husband here for his 30th birthday and we were blown away. We had a cottage room and they are incredibly well-done and sophisticated in a way that most B&Bs are not. The cottage has a flat screen tv, modern fireplace and an amazing new bathroom. Completely modern while architecturally still very Sutter Creek- I'd recommend this place to ANYONE.

If you're looking for an upscale yet friendly B&B, artistic appointments, gourmet refreshments and full course breakfast, look no further than Hanford House.  My husband and I were looking for a comfortable place near San Francisco for a mini-retreat.  This was a perfect find!  Their website is gorgeous, showing you details of the wide range of rooms.  We stayed in the main house but you can also stay in larger rooms in their expanded cottage.  Right next door is Soothe with experienced CMTs.  Cathy was wonderful; you can immediately tell that she has 18 years of experience.
We loved exploring Main Street with its ice cream & candy shop and other stores.  But we also enjoyed just lounging in their living room with comfortable chairs, sipping on coffee. They offer freshly baked cookies in the mid-day, then a tasty wine, cheese and cracker spread at 5 PM, and an amazing (and beautiful) multi-course breakfast.  And I've never stayed at a B&B that provides freshly baked scones at your door at 8 AM!

A few other unique aspects: they allow you full access to their pantry with a refrigerator/freezer and microwave (popcorn available).  And check out the dining room's four walls of love-notes from previous guests.

A perfect place to run away from City Life.

This place rocks!  Highly recommended for its charm, attention to detail, you really feel like you're staying in a home away from home.  The common areas and rooms are tidy, everything works like it should, and you're well stocked with toiletries, movies, etc.  Robert and Athena know the area and can help with recommendations for food, wine, and outdoor activities. They clearly have propery pride and are keen on delivering the  utmost customer service. I've stayed three times and will be back many more.

We stay at the Hanford House 2-3 times a year.  We love it!  Robert and Athena are fairly new owners and have really done a nice job expanding and fixing up a B & B that was already one of our favorites.  Athena does an amazing job on the breakfast and the scones are killer!  We belong to Sutter Creek Wine Tasting's wine club which is right around the corner, so we walk into old town, pick up our wines, go to dinner at one of the terrific restaurants downtown, and then head back to our room at HH.  It's a great getaway!

We re-visited Sutter Creek for our 20th annivesary.  I found Hanford House Inn on the internet and it was one of those great finds.  We enjoyed our stay very much and felt pampered by all the amenities at the Inn.  Robert and Athena are very nice, quiet, helpful  and informative hosts.
We were served scones and coffee at our door with the local paper each morning; we then proceeded to a delicious breakfast made by Athena herself.  Healthy portions, well crafted, plentiful.  I am a coffee snob and they have some of the best coffee at this inn.  Sutter Creek itself is right around the corner--even though you are situated near Main Street it wasn't noisy at all.  Charming town with lots of shopping opportunities.  Go to Susan's Wine Bar/Restaurant--I'll be yelping on their behalf separately but Robert pointed us there and we were extrememely satisfied with the food there.  Robert and Athena are working on developing the inn further and I think that is a good idea as the big meeting area on the street side needs some TLC.  The spa Refresh is right next door and they are also very accommodating and worth it!

This bed and breakfast is top 'shelf'! Robert and Athena are attentive to every detail, very accommodating, and very generous.  The rooms are beautiful and spacious. The food is delicious! Everything is fresh, healthy, and perfectly portioned.  They even offer a wine and cheese reception in the afternoon! Yum!!  We will definitely return!

This was my first visit to Sutter Creek (even Amador county, in fact). I found Hanford House while searching online and decided to book it for a weekend with my aunt for her birthday. We stayed in Cottage Suite #1 and we absolutely LOVED it. The large bed was so comfortable. The chairs in front of the gas fireplace were much more cozy than I thought they would be. The mini-fridge, heated bath floors and over-sized tub were awesome features. The best part was definitely the coffee and scones (even a daily Sacramento Bee) delivered to our room each morning. We enjoyed them in front of the fireplace before going to breakfast in the gathering room. They also offer wine & cheese from 5-6pm in the gathering room. The cheese plate is rather small but still better than not having at all. They also have another public room off of the gathering room that has a big screen TV, books and DVDs and even bikes for guest use. We hope to visit again very soon.

My wife and I spent a restful weekend in their "Mountain Retreat", which is a private property in the hills above Sutter Creek. The cabin was wonderfully appointed, incredibly comfortable, and had an amazing view of the central valley. Each morning we were greeted by foraging deer!  It was wonderful watching the stars from our private hot tub as well.  We will definitely be back.

Hanford House is an absolutely wonderful destination in the Gold Country.  Yes, not just accomodation, but destination.  We stayed only one night on a quickly planned escape from urbanity and kids.  The next time, I want to come back to stay for much longer, because:
--a beautifully decorated and run bed and breakfast.  The manager/owner, Athena, is knowledgeable, helpful and knows how to let you be as well.  The rooms are a bit more modern and classic than many bed and breakfasts--no flowery wallpaper and teddy bears in sight!  Very modern while in a traditional building.
--great public spaces for relaxing, enjoying the goodies that abound, with lots of reading materials, quiet spaces and places to meet up with other guests or friends as well.
--great location, just around the corner from the sweet little downtown, 10 minutes from Plymouth with its fabulous restaurant, Taste and the Amador County wineries and next door to three local tasting rooms.
--amazing breakfast, served in courses, with additional yogurt, yummy homemade granola and great coffee.

I've stayed at lots of bed and breakfasts.  I often don't like the lack of privacy at b and b's.  But Hanford House is a real find.  I can't wait to go back.

A fabulous stay with fabulous hosts.  Robert and Athena couldn't be sweeter and the breakfasts Athena prepared were awesome!!! And Robert's pre-brekkie scones were equally awesome.   Wine and cheese hour was a relaxing way to segue into a short walk to one of the town's restaurants.  We brought our nine year-old daughter, who loved it and even helped set the table.  Lots of historic sights so a great place to park it if you've got a CA 4th grader studying state history.  And for the grown-ups, if you don't have to time to explore the local vineyards, the inn is literally next door to three tasting rooms.  Only one was open on Wednesday but we did some tasting at 4:30, had wine and cheese at Hanford House from 5-6, then sauntered over to the Sutter Creek Palace for dinner at 6ish.  What a way to live!!!!!!!!!!!
