HANE SUSHI is affordable, tasty and with drink specials (2 for 1) DAILY. Who could say no?!
I love sushi, I like to eat sushi at least 2 or 3 times a week. I am glad I discovered this place one day with my model friend. Ever since then I have taken some of my close friends here and EVERYONE has loved it as well. The fish is fresh and the consistancy of all the rolls are exactly what I am always looking for. I have also tried the tiger prawns with the spinach noodles dish which is also amazing. The prawns that are served are huge and big enough portion to share with two people as an appetizer or after some sushi rolls.
My favorite roll is the crunch tuna roll - It is a special roll which is a few extra dollars than the regular rolls but totally worth it and they are large rolls too, not small ones that you usually find in other sushi restaurants. I also enjoy the Special Rainbow Dragon Roll. It has about 8 to 10 pieces and the presentation is gorgeous.
For drinks - I reccommend the plum wine and also saki bombs! Don't go to a Japanese restaurant for "non Japanese drinks" and then write about it to complain about it ;) (like the dude who wrote a rude unhelpful review)
The only "con" I would say about the restaurant is that the service is mediocre. They are not very tenative and sometimes the servers just take your order but have this look on their face like they don't want to be there, so sometimes you end up waiting a while. I've caught the servers twice not picking up our orders from the sushi bar and just hanging out and chatting while our mouths are salivating staring at our orders sitting on the bar. :(
Kudos to Hane Sushi for designing a place that is nice, big and comfortable for the dining public. Extra kudos for the delicious, fresh and affordable sushi.
I had always wondered if Hane Sushi in Stuyvesant Town was related to the Third Avenue and 38th Street location. I was told by the waitress that it once was, but now isn't. But what I can say about the sushi is that you can't go wrong with either location. My final words about this place is that you should bring your date. It's really pleasant inside!
To try to give another spin on this place, I would highly recommend asking the waiter/waitress for his/her recommendations are on the menu.
I tried a few different items when I went here with a friend and, by far, was the best item we had (Rainbow Dragon Roll).
So besides the food being ok, the service was very good. I'm pretty picky about sushi, so I can only give this place 3 stars, but if you go, make sure you get a recommendation on what to eat.
I really like Hane. I've been there a few times for take out and also to eat in with friends that come into town.
Try their special rolls - they are amazing. It's a bit pricey but it's fast delivery and the staff is really attentive when you eat in.
This is solid but not exceptional sushi. I started with the seafood soup (in clear broth) which was pretty bad. For entrees we had a salmon roll (non-spicy) and mackerel roll. Both were good. The atmosphere is kind of cheesy but it was quiet enough that we could easily carry on a conversation. The service was good. Its a decent spot if you live in the neighborhood but i wouldn't make it a travel destination.
I'm torn between one and two stars here. I'm also trying really hard to figure out why this place is absolutely mobbed when it is so incredibly mediocre. It has to be the convenience factor. North Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village is a culinary desert unfortunately, and fortunately for these people, they're one of the few games in town.
I live right down the street in Stuyvesant Town, and I've avoided going since it opened about a two years ago or so, mostly because it represents what Met Life has done to the complex (i.e., putting lipstick on a pig). They pulled all the long term "Mom and Pop" stores out of the complex and in their stead put restaurants and stores of this ilk, i.e., generally overpriced and crappy. I watched the progress as they renovated the space (which used to be occupied by a very homey Hallmark store), and from the looks of things it took a lot longer than they'd anticipated. It was apparent they dropped huge bucks renovating, but to me it has an expensive but cheesy sheen to it. Couldn't bring myself to go in there all this time because there was something really unappealing about it, aside from the Met Life baggage. Turns out my instincts were correct.
Just so happened I ran into some friends on the way to go grocery shopping and since I hadn't had dinner, they convinced me to join them and try it. They'd been there before and said the best thing about it was the convenience factor, so my expectations were low. We'd weighed the local options before choosing and with a lack of a better choice right nearby, we went for it.
First the good, and then the bad (a much longer list).
The good:
1. It is indeed convenient.
2. ::: crickets :::
The bad:
1. I had the worst mojito I've ever experienced. Why order a mojito at Japanese restaurant, you ask? Good question. I ordered it because it was on their cocktail list, i.e., it was a featured drink. It arrived with a few wisps of mint in it and tasting of collins mix. FAIL. I spoke to the waitress and told her how wrong it was and she told me it could be made without the collins mix. She brought me another version that tasted EXACTLY like the first. FAIL AGAIN. A Mojito is a simple but labor-intensive drink. Five ingredients: Rum, sugar, mint, limes and soda water. That's it. The limes, mint and sugar have to be muddled together. No exceptions, no ifs, ands or buts. You can't make a mojito from a mix (DUH) and GOD FORBID you put COLLINS mix in it! DIE. There should be enough mint in there to make it seem like you're eating a salad, not a couple o' wispy pieces o' mint floating around. GEESH.
2. Okay, so I'm at a Japanese restaurant with lousy mojitos. Fine. Then, how about mediocre (at best) sushi? I had their spicy roll combination which included tuna, yellowtail and salmon rolls. The fish was all but indistinguishable from one another and I believe some of it was old. One piece tasted especially fishy and they were not at all spicy.
3. I had their "special" spicy yellowtail roll as well. It was basically that pressed fish stuff on the inside of the roll, and yellowtail draped unattractively on the outside of the roll, which also made it fall apart very easily when dipping it into soy sauce.
4. The soy sauce was WATERY.
5. We had green tea ice cream for desert. Dunno about you,. but when I order green tea ice cream, I want some creamy delicious unadulterated green tea ice cream. DO NOT FUCK WITH IT. What I got were icy balls of green tea ice cream, drizzled with Hershey's syrup (FAIL), Redi-whip (FAIL) and a maraschino cherry (FAIL FAIL FAIL). Just give me the ICE CREAM. What kinda crap is this?
Bleh. People who like this place have never had decent sushi.
I'm feeling two stars drift toward one. Can I actually give them an extra star because of the extra fine talent that was populating every table around us? Yeah, I guess I can.
One star for drink and food. One star for fine wimmenz.
Seriously, skip this place and go elsewhere for Sushi. It really kinda su-u-u-u-cks.
Another run-of-the-mill Japanese restaurant serving thoroughly undistinguished sushi. Other reviewers have made much of the two-for-one drinks. I fail to see how being served two thimblefulls of sake for the price of one normal sized glass of sake qualifies as a deal. The decor is decidedly odd, as if the place had been a mildly upscale Greek restaurant in a previous incarnation.
I took it as a slightly unsettling sign that my Chinese waitress was wearing a nametag with a fake Japanese name. (I'm not surmising this - she told me). This suggests that management's attitude is a holdover from the days when non-Japanese sushi chefs were suspect. I won't even mention the implicit suggestion that foolish Westerners can't be expected to differentiate among Asian cultures, as it's mildly insulting.
An aside to those who are impressed by the chintzy (and poorly installed) Home Depot sinks in the restrooms: Really? You guys need to get out more. Yes, there are restaurants out there with amazing and futuristic restroom fixtures that are alone worth a trip to the loo. This ain't one of them. I posted a picture to prove it.
Great sushi here, it is so fresh and delicious try the Hane special spicy tuna roll and you will not be disappointed! Also a new favorite is the Spider roll - soft shell tempura, avocado and cucumber roll - amazing!!
I came here mostly for the 2-for-1 drinks and convenient location, and that's pretty much all I would come back for. The food was overpriced and just okay. I got the $10.95 3-roll combo (tuna, California, and salmon), and was pretty satisfied. It's a little strange that it doesn't come with soup or salad like most of the sushi places in the area, though. If you order one of the special rolls you'll definitely need more than one to make a meal out of it.
The drinks were incredibly sweet - even by my standards (I generally don't like to taste too much alcohol in my mixed drinks). Both the cosmo and the mango mojito could have used less sugar and more vodka and rum, respectively.
I do have to give them props for being dog-friendly. While many NYC establishments make you tie your dog up outside the perimeter of the outdoor seating area, Hane let my pup sit under our table, and even brought her a dish of water.
Next time I'll get a Japanese beer or two and then bring the dog home and go to Sushi Lounge for dinner - cheaper, more food, and tastier.
Irasshaimase!!!! all the sushi masters smiled, stopped what they were doing, and greeted us with their joyous welcome. it made me feel magical.
this place started right of the bat with five stars. the waitresses all wore neon pink tops and cute denim skirts with leggings. this was my kind of sushi. the decor alone is jumpin'. neon lights, straw booths, and lots of room. i am sad i didn't go to the bathroom based on katherine w's review "the bathroom possibly came from the set of Battle Star Galactica." that sounds awesome.
the food was good. so many delicious choices. vegetarian sushi is always a requirement for me so when i was able to have not one ladies and gentlemen but TWO big vegetarian rolls i was happy. in terms of real sushi options, jason a was in HEAVEN. his eyes literally looked like they were going to glaze over in delight... and i quote "i want everything on the menu."
the scary thing is the sushi rolls don't have prices under the picture/description... could it be cheap? could it be Masa pricing? we didn't know. it ended up being a little over priced in my opinion (thus no five star status) but again, the food was good and made up for us not getting into any mexican establishment on the monumental holiday of cinco de mayo. hey wasabi could be like guacamole.....?
b-t-dub the mango sauce tastes like apricots.
Came here with a friend last Sunday, and we was very pleasantly surprised! I was expecting a run of the mill corner sushi place, but Hane was very good. We had the spicy tuna and avocado salad, which was very large and good, the pork gyoza, and two of the Hane special rolls. The Hane special rolls were very delicious, and sizable. We were quite stuffed by the end of the meal.
Also notable is that many (if not all) drinks are 2 for 1 during dinner, and each night features a different sushi discounted. Sunday was the Hane special rolls, Monday is all tuna sushi, Wednesday is salmon and I don't remember the others.
Okay, so straight up, you walk in and the place screams "diner". I was very skeptical. But I quickly got over it for two simple reasons -
1. All drinks are 2 for 1! What? Yes, you're reading correctly. I could not get over this fact and kept exclaiming about it throughout the whole dinner. Our group got many a round of sake, beer and wine to take full advantage. Even AFTER we received our check, one of the guys in my group realized that he had not received his 2nd "free" beer, and they actually brought it for him!
2. The sushi is solid! I didn't expect much, but they actually had some creative rolls and everything was super-fresh and tasty.
Never would have guessed from the outside that I'd have a great time at this place, but I really did. Yay Hane!
I liked this place in terms of value and quality. We went on a Saturday for a little lunch/brunch/hangover cure, and I'm pretty sure we were their first customers of the day. The decor is a little strange (there were string curtains in the middle of the windows that didn't block the light, and the sink in the bathroom possibly came from the set of Battlestar Galactica). The food, however, came out quickly and was good.
I ordered the chicken teriyaki (chicken breasts, not the leftovers) and an eel cucumber roll. Both of mine were very good. My friend got two of the spicy rolls and the pumpkin tempura roll as park of the three roll deal that they have at lunch time. I don't remember which spicy rolls she got, but she said that they weren't quite as spicy as they probably should have been and that the pumpkin tempura roll was also a little bland. But with a little wasabi and ginger, everything was pretty good. I would definitely recommend it for a quick and cheap Japanese grill/sushi meal.
Pretty large space. Always pretty busy. They have a larger menu than most japanese restaurants--especially for vegetarians. At most restaurants, I have to ask to see if they can make me vegi sushi but it's on their menu at Hane.
Last time I was there, they seated us at a table near the fountain the back. Well, it splashed on us our entire meal--that's poorly designed. Service was alright--the food took a while to come out so the waiter brought us complimentary edamame. It was nice of him but what bothers me is, if we were hungry for edamame wouldn't we just order it? Why can't they just take something that we DID order off the bill? It just seems silly. Food was alright, nothing amazing. There was some drink special--2 for one which seemed like a good deal. Reasonably priced. Nice presentation.
Not necessarily the best sushi in the world, but decent sushi and very reasonably priced. They have some tasty rolls and you really can't beat the 2-for-1 drinks special (every night!!). It's my go-to neighborhood sushi place.
Simple lunch, but 4 star for value and some quality! You get a drink and get one free of the same value during this time. I also got the 7.95 lunch
of Salmon Terriyaki, veggies, miso soup and salad. The salad dressing sucked, but everything else was fine. Even the veggies well evenly steamed all the way thru, and not rock hard, or way too mushy.
The salmon had absolutely no bones in it!!! Amazing!!! It was only a tad
bit dry, but mainly moist. Extra on the side, I ordered an inside out eel avocado roll with sesame on the outside (they forgot the sesame seeds). It was the best I've ever had, melts in your mouth.
They had 4 sushi chefs at work.. and 3 more are due for the dinner shift.
Two big flat screens which can get all cable sports channels were running, with the volume turned down.. and soft new age music was wafting thru the speakers throughout the restaurant. The tables are nicely adorned in smooth granite stone, and the dishware is all white modern. The portions are modest.
I also ordered some plum wine which was nice and chilled well too, and some simple chocolate ice cream for dessert which I could have had fried, but chose plain, and it was of above average quality too.
I had one of the japanese lite beers... and I had to ask for water often,
but otherwise the service was average.
For the value, ambience, and quality, and delicious food... high marks.. solid 4. They have expensive items on the menu too, such as highly
exotic rolls.. and lobster, but for the cheaper items -- I still scored a
good meal.
What's there not to like? Pleasant decor, 2-for-1 drinks and really good sushi. I like the sink in the bathrm, too. The service is a little slow, but I can get past that.
clean, happy, up lifting, modern, inexpensive, great neighborhood, fresh food, friendly staff and 2 for 1 drinks every evening. i end up there at least 3 times a week. who knows, maybe tonight. the only reason i give it 4 instead of 5 stars is that although the food is really really really fresh and good, the menu does need just a few more interesting options.
I had another awesome experience at Hane last weekend, this time with my girlfriend. As always, Hane served us up delicious gyoza and a variety of sushi, but what made this experience even better was the 2-for-1 drink special. After we each had a drink and were given our second one free, our waitress allowed us to order a third drink, giving us the 2-for-1 special upfront. We both thought highly of the lychee and pomegranate martinis.

Hane is a must if you in Gramercy/StuyTown/Peter Cooper. The place is always busy and consistently… Read more »
Hane's sushi leaves something to be desired. Yes the drink special is nice especially if looking for your date to have that extra glass of wine to complete the 2 for 1 special but as for the food it is just so-so.
I recently moved to PCV from Tudor City and where I used to have such an amazing place, Tony's Sushi on 38th and 2nd, as my local sushi establishment; I now have Hane Sushi. 38th is a little too far for me to trek for neighborhood sushi but Hane quickly moved to my B list for places to eat.
Ok this place doesn't totally suck, it mostly sucks. there's so much good sushi in manhattan, why are you here hane! everything is overpriced, and underexciting. everyone else seems to be big on the drink specials, but i dunno, i don't think it excuses it. i live in pcv so this is literally like the nearest possible restaurant, and i'm ashamed to be part of the local economy that supports restaurant mediocrity! i love sushi and i live across the street, but after two attempts to order take out from hane i will never ever go there again.
Not great but definitely good for the price. A decent amount of sushi and drinks for 4 came to about $75. It seems like a lower quality take on the menu at somewhere like Haru. The service was attentive at first and then no where to be found. The decor is pretty bizarre - it is almost worth a trip to see the chariot and orca mosaics. The best bet in the area is still Petite Abeille.
UPDATE: So we gave Hane another shot...the service was still very uncoordinated and spotty with the same all over you when you sit down routine (we had 3 waiters at one point) and then no where to be found when you are done. The food is decent and cheap but the service was poor.
My favorite sushi in the neighborhood. Very reasonably priced and lovely atmosphere. Staff is always very pleasant and kind. Different nights of the week have both food and drink specials. My personal fav: Tuesday night is 50% off the Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll, it's delicious!
Sushi here was really good, the price moderate but the service terrible. The waitress managed to screw up our appetizer and she brought us our food late
If you're looking for inexpensive sushi within a higher priced atmosphere HANE is the place to be. The service and ambiance are great and worth the wait for one of their booths overlooking the street. The sushi is always fresh and delish! To top it all off they have 2-for-1 drink specials every night, 7 days a week! How can you beat that. Try their Sauvignon Blanc or Prosecco, a perfect compliment with a spicy tuna roll.
The area is also nice, not too busy and if you'd like to sit outside on a warm day there isn't alot of foot traffic to annoy you.
solid sushi. i've eaten a bunch of different dishes (both sushi and otherwise) and am always satisfied. 2 for 1 drinks a big big plus.
Good sushi, reasonable prices, awesome bathrooms.
good fresh sushi and very attentive service. the decor of the place is nice too - especially being that the location is at a spot where there is not much around..1st ave in the 20s is definitely revamping to a place with some good restaurants.
that being said, i live 3 streets down..if i didn't live 3 streets down i wouldn't make an extra effort to eat here.
its good though - i liked the eel sushi, the dragon roll, and the salmon avocado. Their green tea ice cream is pretty yum too. yum.
Hane Sushi has a new location on the corner of 20th Street and 1st Avenue. I had my first dinner there recently and it was so full I had to sit at the sushi bar. The meal was quite good. Our waitress was extremely attentive and very nice. I'll give them a big thumbs up for bringing some variety to a neighborhood that had a diner and a Burger King 3 years ago. I haven't eaten there enough to get too good a grasp on the food, but what I had was very good. Dragon Roll, Spice Tuna, some individual pieces of eel sushi. Very good.
I LOVE Hane. I live above the restaurant and eat there at least once a week. The Sesame Crust Tuna roll is the best tuna roll i have ever had. The take out is not as good, but if you visit the restaurant you will enjoy the 2 for 1 drink specials and great sushi.
Welcome to Denny's.
food i had here (sushi) was kinda OK, but nothing grand, though (as I've been to better japanese restaurants). i vaguely remember that the service was not that good, though.
Updating my review...this is my FAVORITE sushi place ever. Instead of just 4 stars, I'm giving this place 5 stars. I've been going here for about a year now, and have frequented this place up to 3 times a week for awhile. Because I have since moved pretty far away, I'm only able to come here maybe once a month or so. However, the hosts, waiters, and chefs remember me and they're very friendly. The food is as great as I remembered it when I first walked in a year ago. My favorite thing in this place, oddly enough, is their soy sauce. It is home-made and has a touch of sweetness, and not at all super spicey like the usual soy sauces you get at other restaurants. The sushi/sashimi platters are always presented nicely and everything tastes great. I usually order the sushi/sashimi combo with some rolls, and my boyfriend orders the lobster roll or the blue crab roll, and the sushi fusion. Very good stuff. Sitting at the bar beats sitting at the tables or booths because you can see the chefs at work. They're absolutely great at what they do. I would definitely recommend this place, and I will definitely be back very soon.
