I was very happy with Handyman Matters - I've used Mr. Handyman of Lincoln Park before & wasn't able to get an appointment on a day I was working from home. So I took a shot in the dark on the Google & found these guys.
Thought they were faster, cheaper & easier to find convenient appointment times than Mr. Handyman. The guy who was sent to my house (Damian) was polite, worked quickly & gave me a deal on labor -- I didn't hear my doorbell ring so the poor guy waited outside for an hour - I said that I'd be more than happy to pay for the full hour since it was 100% my fault that I didn't hear the doorbell ring since I was on a call for work on my blackberry & didn't hear my personal cell ringing in the bottom of my purse when he arrived - but he only charged me for 1/2 hr.
Definitely a fan - think I have a new go-to handyman service. -

My wife and I had been searching for a good company to install our new entry door and screen door. After realizing that Home Depot was going to charge us an arm, leg, foot, and a hand to install them we started looking elsewhere.
I read the reviews on yelp and realized that Handyman Matters seem to treat people good and give a fair price all the while doing quality work. I called the company on a Monday and they sent Arthur out on Wednesday. Arthur showed up on the dot and was professional. He realized the job was going to take longer but he decided to do the same day anyway. Arthur took his time and had great patience with our old doors. The entry door took 1 day to install so he came back 3 days later and installed the storm door. Excellent work. Arthur told us what he was doing every step of the way and made some suggestions that did not cost too much extra.
Love these guys. I will be working with them for a long time.
If you have a project call them. They will do it right the first time and charge you a fair price.
I sound like a spokesperson for the company but I am not. I just believe in giving credit where credit is due. In these shady economical times, it is nice to know that there are still quality workers out there that are fair and honest.Comment from Paul B. of Handyman Matters Chicago 8/18/2011

We needed some outlets added in our new house. We had gotten a quote from another place that seemed really high but they couldn't come over for a few weeks. I called Handyman Matters and they were able to come out in 2 days. The guy was early. early. that never happens with a contractor. He did the job quickly and did it right - at the price was more than half of the other quote.

Life is short. Do you really want to spend 20 hours of this precious gift painting the foyer, living room and dining room, yelling at your partner, chasing a cat that ran through a roller pan, chipping paint speckles off of your chunky hipster glasses, and feeling high but not in a good way? No, it is worth using your soft, college-educated hands to write a check to Handyman Matters. After one visit, you will think of other things to have those handy men to do, things that involve band saws, electricity, and nail guns. Things that you pretend you are handy enough to do, but in reality would mean death or disfigurement if you ever attempted them.
After one pre-holiday visit from Handyman Matters, to make the house more presentable to in-laws, I was beyond shame: I had those handy dudes installing shelves and hooks, hanging blinds, rehanging a bedroom door to open out instead of in, repairing rotting iron porch railings, making under-stairs storage area doors, and yes...painting.
There is an initial service charge. The last time I used them, in summer 2006, it was $75.00. On top of the service charge, it is time plus materials. This means that small jobs are most cost-effective if you batch as many together as possible during a single visit. In most cases, I bought my own materials, since time used by the service person to buy them is charged at the same rate as actual repair time.
The work was done correctly and quickly, and all three gentlemen were courteous, intelligent, and cleaned up after themselves. For the reluctant DIYer, I couldn't recommend them more highly. You can always fix stuff yourself when you're retired...RIGHT. -

I had a terrible experience with Handyman Matters this week. I hope to prevent others from having a negative experience with this review.
Mike from Handyman Matters came on Monday to try to help us find where the pipe for our dryer vent got disconnected behind our ceiling - NOT an easy task. He did pretty well trouble-shooting, had to put a few holes in the ceiling to take a look, never found where it was disconnected because it goes behind our neighbor's wall a little, but taped the pipe a little more tightly in some areas. We're hoping that suffices for now, but are considering getting a new dryer.
We scheduled him to come back to patch up the ceiling. This was the nightmare. He knew what the job was, because he had been here 4 days before. Nevertheless, he arrived without drywall and needed directions to Menards because he was at a Home Depot earlier that day and it was way too crowded. Why didn't he get the stuff for our job while he was there??? He KNEW what he needed to do because he was the one doing the job before.
BTW, we happened to have drywall in the garage, but it was the wrong kind, he said.
He goes, and it takes an hour before he gets back. There's $85 down the drain. Then he's here until after 7 pm. (The appointment was at 3 pm.) He hasn't yet painted the patches - they still need to dry about a half hour, he says, before he can paint, and he hates to have us pay while he's waiting for them to dry.
Handyman Matters calls this morning around 9 am asking if Mike can return at 11 today. They must be kidding! As if I'm doing nothing but waiting at home for them to come for a third visit and hundreds more dollars to accomplish nothing? I work for a living, too.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...Comment from Paul B. of Handyman Matters Chicago 5/27/2009

Embarking into the world of service based repair is a dreaded task for most of the general population. Everyone we know has at least one story of unnecessary or hidden charges or poor service. Another all too common trend is the daunting missed or late for appointments excuses. You almost feel lucky to find a place that treats you right.
H.M. is that place. The customer service rep I spoke to for making the appointment was pleasant to deal with and thorough in gathering information. She explained all the possible charges in detail.
The repair technician called prior to the appointment to get detail on the problem, so he could be more prepared. He was on time, and was even able to come a little early. He worked quickly yet completely, explaining everything along the way. Just like the customer service rep, the technician was affable and cordial. I felt very comfortable letting him into our house.
I highly recommend Handyman Matters. We used them for plumbing services, but will be using them for any and all needs we can't handle ourselves in the future. -

We definitely had a five star experience with Handyman Matters, and in particular with our handyman, Orlando. The rep on the phone took detailed information about the installation of two sinks, kitchen and bath, that we needed done. She called back to confirm additional information, and we got an appointment within 3 working days. Orlando was right on time at 8am, told us how long it would take, and he got right to work.
Handyman Matters is very clear on pricing and charges by the quarter hour. They guarantee their work and did a great job.
A couple of days after the job, Handyman Matters called us to check and make sure that we were pleased with the work. We are. -

Second time was as good as the first. Quality work done, not rushed, so likely a tad expensive, but no buyer's remorse on having them do the job. Had them install shelving inside in a closet and out in the garage. Handyman arrived right on time, ready to work, got the supplies and went to work. Turns out that my electrician knew him from a house that they worked on together, so this further credentializes this business. Good to know.
I would/will use them again.... and again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

So let me start my review by explaining the situation. We had a clogged drain in our kitchen and called a few places to see who could fix it. Handyman gave me a call back and was very friendly about scheduling an appointment. I was able to have them come out within a couple of hours of them initially calling me.
When they arrived, the handyman guy got right to work trying to fix the drain. He even went to the hardware store to get some replacement parts which were needed. However, I asked him to try and see if he had unclogged the sink prior to getting the new parts, as it didn't matter whether the parts were busted or not if the sink was still clogged. He went and got the parts anyway. Ah well. Now we have the new parts installed, but when he installed them, the sink was still clogged. At this point, he had been there for two hours, which I was fine with, but without the sink being fixed, which I was not fine with. He then said, well, you need to get a "real" plumber out here with the right equipment.
At this point, I wasn't really upset as he was working the entire time to fix the issue and it was legitimate that he didn't have the right equipment. What I would suggest is that Handyman doesn't market themselves as being able to fix clogged drains if they cannot fix them due to a lack of equipment. That would be like me saying "Of course I can do all of your financial planning" when really I only know how to do a few things in Excel.
I did have some other projects for him to work on around the house, so I had him stick around to work on those, while I called Power Plumbing and had them come out to fix the issue. Overall, Handyman is really good at what they do, it's just that I think they overstepped their bounds on this plumbing issue a bit.Comment from Paul B. of Handyman Matters Chicago 10/2/2009

The count of small fix-it jobs had finally reached critical mass; it was time to call Handyman Matters!
I made an appointment for the following week without any trouble; I called three days later to expand the "to do" list; again, not problem. And the handyman called me to confirm early afternoon the day before my appointment. I was always confident he'd show up.
He arrived 3 minutes early; I was up and ready so I met him while he waited to knock. He rehung my garage door, caulked two bathrooms, and rehung kitchen cabinet doors, all in about 2 hours. It would take me 3 weeks (I'm not very handy).
I've worked with Handyman Matters a half dozen times in the past three years they've delivered a superior product every time. The customer only commitment is to let HM know what needs to be done well before the date of the actual appointment. On-site requests cannot always be accomdated.
I recommend then enthusiastically. -

Handyman Matters was effortless to deal with. I needed two sinks fixed for my tenants. They were able to arrange a same day appointment and got the job done faster than I expected. Very satisfied with their work and would call them again if I needed anything.

I recently got robbed and was in need of a completely new door. I called all over the city and Handyman Matters was the most professional and understanding. I was able to get someone the next day to install the new door and frame, as well as the locks. The job was done quickly, the worker was professional and easy to deal with, and the quality of work was outstanding! I will definitely be using them in the future for other jobs that might come up. I highly recommend them.

this is the best place ever. They really are incredibly good at so many things.
Case in point: I have used Handyman Matters for baseboard heating installation, plumbing repair, and other things around the house. Their service people come on time (or even early!), they are very communicative by phone, and they're quick and relatively inexpensive. I had one baseboard heating unit installed by another company, and it took several weeks of choosing the part and installing it and ended up costing over 600.00. Handyman Matters came in, installed another baseboard (clocking the time that it took the guy to actually buy the part and come back to my house), and it was cheaper than that, even with the labor included. They're so great; use them! I swear that I'm not being paid by them (haha), but I'm just very satisfied with their service, and so will you be. Fast, efficient, cheap, and user-friendly. -

I've used Handyman Matters for a couple of jobs in my townhouse and have been impressed with everything. The latest job (completed by Damien) was tiling a stairway landing to my rooftop deck. Damien was upfront with everything he had to complete to get the job done correctly and tried his best to get it complete before he hit OT. The landing looks great, and I'd gladly call on Handyman to do other jobs as necessary (of course, not the jobs I can complete myself!)

I was in need of a handyman and the last one bailed on me so I came to Yelp for help. Handyman Matters received high praise so I figured, why not. So far, they've been to my place 3 times and since it's an hourly rate I've completely exceeded my budget. Word of advice: go to a place that quotes based on jobs and not by the hour.

so i guess i did not have high expectations from the beginning as it just seems that handyman area always unprofessional but this was bad. The company in general was nice but it was the handyman themselves that I did not like.
I gave them two stars because they did hang my TV correctly but that is about all the stars why. It all started out fine, they came on time (well, 5 mins late) they were nice. Apparently I needed two hire two people because my TV was too large for one person. 48 inches. So the rates are $85 and hour for each man. So last time I got my TV hung it took less than an hour so I figure $170 maybe at max would be all it took to get the TV hung which compared to Best Buy was a great value. Except it ended up taking two hours so now we are at $340. One of the guys kept 'forgetting' stuff in his truck and was gone for long amounts of time. Oh ' I forgot a bolt' etc. That was really annoying.
Then the guy said that he had to run to the hardware store and it would only take 40 mins! I said no way, I did not need better cables on my TV and I sure as heck was not going to pay $140 dollars so he could run to the hardware store!
So anyways the work finally gets done and everything looks great except he hands me the bill and he said it was $32 for parking (although he parked across the street and it is $12.00 for the entire day) and he also would not honor the Yelp voucher and was so rude so I had to call the office and tell them while these two big guys were standing there and he wanted me to talk in front of him as if I was the one being shady. The women who set everything up was really nice and had me put him on the phone and he ended up honoring it. I was just disappointed and feel like he was being dishonest. And his partner did not say a word. I was scared to say anything about the parking after I pointed it out and he started rambling on so I just paid in fear of that they know where I live!Comment from Paul B. of Handyman Matters Chicago 8/18/2011

I have used this company multiple times. Most recently - level my sunroom floor and replaster my LR walls after having electrical work done. Ed the plasterer was very good. After waiting the recommended time, I painted the walls and you simply cannot tell that there was any work done on those walls. They are rather steep in their prices but I have never had a problem with the work being performed.

My car was snowed in from the last storm, in my parking spot behind the building. Most of the exit area of the alley was also snowed in, and since my car is RWD I could not get it out. It would most likely get stuck and then I would have a massive headache. I had this same problem last year, and had to take the cab to work everyday (I don't have a nearby el stop (and also I can't stand the el anyways) and since I work off-hours waiting for a bus (and getting to the bus stop) are both sources of serious headaches). I normally drive my car to the Metra stop 1 mile away and take that to work. This was about a foot of snow all around my car and at the exit way - I was not about to clear it because a) I did not have a good shovel (last time I had a shovel I tried it and broke the shovel) and b) I had no means of getting a shovel at the time. Also c) convenience, I really did want someone to do it for me. Didn't want to break my back.
Checking the forecast, it's clear the weather is not going to turning good anytime soon - so I got tired of paying so much extra to get to work and decided to do something. I looked up Handyman Matters and was very pleased with the cordiality and response. Had a handyman come out Saturday morning and get my spot cleared in a very reasonable amount of time. Enabling me to easily get my car out and trade it in for an AWD SUV! I will never be stuck again.
Thank you, Handyman Matters!
