Like another reviewer mentioned, I don't get the "cult of Sushi King" either. I have been going to Hanamura for years. The service is great, the staff is friendly, and the food is fantastic! I have yet to eat something there I didn't like.

My favorites are the Kinoko Miso, Shumai, and Philadelphia Rolls. There is also a maki roll involving crab meat and Old Bay, I believe it is called the Lake Side roll. Being a sushi lover from the Baltimore area, it doesn't get any better than that.

I don't get the "cult of Sushi King" at all. The one time we ate there, our meal was average, the service was indifferent, and the bill was high. Give me Hanamura any day. There is no better roll around than the Spicy Kevin Roll, a tempura fried spicy tuna roll. The gyoza are crisp and light. The yaki dishes are full of noodley goodness. And the staff is friendly and attentive.

I know that sushi in Maryland isn't up to the standards of the sushi snobs from other cities but really. Can we stop cr@pping all over a perfectly good restaurants? We get it, you are cooler than we are.

Another bad sushi restaurant in Maryland!   If you're japanese and a sushi chef, please come and open a Sushi bar in Maryland, please!

The one notable at Hanamura is not the sushi but the fried ice cream:  tempura-battered, deep fried so that the scoop of ice cream melts perfectly.  Why is this artery-clogging treat so hard to find anywhere?  More importantly, how can I get fried ice cream flambe'ed (a critical element missing in Hanamura's version)--the last time of which I experienced some twenty-plus years ago at the old China Garden restaurant when it was still located on the top floor of a high rise in Rosslyn?  As a child I stared in wide-eyed wonder at the fried ice cream prepared tableside, liqueur lit aflame then doused with chocolate syrup, which I'm sure violated multiple fire codes and necessitated the special training of wait staff.  Now if I ever happen upon that fiery version of ice cream tempura again, I just may end up having a heart attack.

Oh, and I agree with Twinkie:  Forget the sushi...unless you're vegetarian.  They have an inordinate number of vegetarian maki--go figure.

Quick and simple:  Expensive and not fresh.  These are the two most obvious things that are to be avoided when going out for sushi.  The selection isn't very bad, but what's that matter when you're not going to enjoy anything that you order?  Why not just go across the street to Sushi King?  You'll thank them for being so close.

not visiting Columbia often I didn't know about Sushi King....just happened to stumble across this one and I thought it was a great find.

the bento box was good, almost great.  I like variety in my food and sushi/sashimi never fills me and i feel bad going out for sushi and getting chicken, but the bento box had 3 choice items..so i chose chix teriyaki, tofu, and salmon rolls, pretty cool.  only could be better if the third choice was sashimi.

you know, now that i think about it the scallop sushi i had tasted kinda fishy, maybe it's not fresh like twinkie says? hmmm, i will have to return and try again...service was great, prompt.

Bad food, very expensive and the "sushi chef" was eating WHILE preparing food.

When I complained, I got a half-hearted apology and a real dirty look from the chef. Good thing I had my food already.

Don't bother ever eating at this place.

I don't know what experience the other person had, but I had a pretty good time. The food was fresh, the service was lightning fast, and the selection was good. I am a huge fan of salmon, avocado, asparagus, and shrimp tempura all of which they had for a very fair price. The sushi may not be mind blowingly good, but it certainly wasn't bad. Go here if you need a sushi fix, but not necessarily if you're trying to impress someone with your love for sushi.
