i've never had Sushi in morgan hill so of course, i looked to Yelp for help on where to go. i found great reviews for both Hanami and CreAsia. CreAsia was packed (it was a friday night) so we went to Hanami.
great sushi, friendly service. we sat at the sushi bar (it was dinner so the boats weren't going around). the only complaint i have is not being able to order direction from the Sushi chefs. isn't that the point of sitting at the sushi bar? this is the second sushi restaurant that i've been to recently that has a bar but doesn't let you order directly from the chefs.
overall it was really good and i would eat here again
I don't consider myself to be a Japanese food snob but I dread going into Japanese restaurants without doing research and making sure it is not only good but unique. They're all too much the same nowadays.
I was sitting a couple stores down at Naomi's Coffee and needed hot substance that wasn't some version of a sandwich. I didn't want to spend too much so I figured that the Curry Tonkatsu for $8.50 would be the best deal. Turns out it was. They gave plenty of rice, plenty of curry, and plenty of meat with fresh red daikon!! I got this as takeout and it took less than 15 minutes.
Now this is the first time I've spent any time in Morgan Hill and the town appears to be small and quaint. There seems to be a local feel all around.
Located in a cute little plaza just off 101 on Dunne Ave., Hanami Sushi is a nice little gem of a sushi place in Morgan Hill. The place is clean and very well-kept. Ordered 4 items:
Soft Shell Crab - This isn't the kind you'll find at Fuji's up north. You can actually see that this is indeed a crab you are eating and not just a chunk of batter. Superb. May be too "fishy" for some but I love it.
Spider Roll - Same soft shell crab, but in sushi form. Good, but not the best rolling job on this one so it fell apart easily.
Pink Dragon - (Forgot to take a picture, sorry!) The special sauce makes this roll great as well as the subtle hints of smoked salmon. Yum!
Green Beast Roll - The spicy lobster got lost in the avocado/wasabi tobiko mixture. Beautiful looking roll, though.
I would definitely come back here if I was in the area.
Summary: 4/5 stars
+Nice, clean place
+FAST, friendly service
+Soft shell craaaaaab
+Lovely presentation
-Hit or miss rolls
The best sushi in town at the most reasonable price.
We were pleasantly surprised by Hanami. We weren't expecting anything too authentic, but our skepticism quickly transformed into hope when we walked in and heard Sayuri Ishikawa's enka playing in the background. (And "Amagigoe" is a great song...just so you know.)
We got some sushi rolls, a bento box (with chicken, beef and salmon) and my all-time favorite, Nabeyaki Udon. The tempura in my udon was decent, and so was the broth. In short, I would describe their food as "usukuchi" -- poorly translated as "low in sodium."
The main menu is oddly Americanized for a place that's seemingly run by Japanese. Survival of the fittest, I guess. By the time we noticed a "special" menu hanging on the wall next to the sushi bar, we had finished eating. WHAT A PITY.
The service was unreasonably slow that night, but we had a nice and relaxing dinner after a busy day of shopping at the Gilroy Outlet. A perfect way to finish the weekend!
3.5 stars.
Pretty typical Japanese food. Can't say it was fantastic but it wasn't bad either. We ordered a Bento that had chicken terriyaki, tempura and pork katsu. We also ordered spicy tuna roll and maguro. Chicken terriyaki and tempura were pretty standard. They also give you very little sauce to dip your tempura in. The chicken katsu however was delicious and crispy. The spicy tuna roll was good and the maguro was fresh and melted in my mouth.
Service is really great here. Our server filled our waters continuously and our meal was served quickly. This place is also very very clean. That was the first thing I noticed when walking in. The floors just shined!
We'll be back!
I came here for lunch on a Friday, and my group of 6 were the first customers. We walked in and waited to get seated. The hostess saw us, and seated us at a table near the back. I noticed they have 3 booths, a sushi boat area, and tables in the back.
I looked at the lunch menu and saw the prices range from $8.25 to around $10. I ordered a Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box A, which came with miso soup, rice, salad, CA rolls.
Our soup came out after we ordered. It was definitely hot! I had to wait a few minutes before drinking it. There was seaweed and tofu in the soup. The soup was really good and not salty!
The place started to get really packed. I noticed only 2 tables left.
About 15 minutes after we got our soup, our bento boxes started to come out. For $8.25, the portion size was decent. The salad was not drowning in dressing, but the dressing was ok. There were 3 CA rolls in the bento box, and they were delicious. The chicken teriyaki was good, too. The chicken did not have a lot of fat on it, so I was happy about that.
The service here was pretty good. There was only one waitress and she had to take orders, pour tea, bring out dishes, calculate and give the bill to customers. She was always smiling and friendly!
The prices here are a bit pricey for lunch specials, but the food was good.
I thought it was O.K. I like Creasian better.
I ordered the Chicken Katsu and Teriyaki Salmon. I love Salmon and was not happy with the small thin portion this was. Actually the portion sizes are a bit small in the Bento boxes.
Maybe worth another try, not sure yet.
Hanami is definitely the best Japanese restaurant in the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area and is pretty up there with some of the better Japanese restaurants in the bay area.
Yes, outside the restaurant smells like crap but honestly, we can all learn to just suck it up and quickly make our way inside. The interior is very clean and has a pleasant environment. The sushi boat is nice and there's a decent amount of seating.
The sushi is very well prepared. It stays together very well while taking bites out of it... no need to stuff an entire piece into your mouth all at once. And it tastes great! My favorite is the dragon roll (shrimp tempura, unagi and avocado). Teriyaki items are very good and come in pretty generous portions. Their tempura is also excellent. Unlike heavy and greasy tempura you get at most places, Hanami makes theirs super light and crispy. Everything else I've tried is also very tasty.
The prices are about average for Japanese food. Not cheap but not expensive. The great food combined with the friendly service makes Hanami a wonderful dining experience.
Quaint little sushi place located in Morgan Hill. Easy to get to from the 101. I loved the wooden floor and tables.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the prices here are a little lower than other sushi places in the area. My boyfriend and I ordered the Agedashi Tofu, the Philadelphia Roll, the Rock 'N Roll, and the Pink Dragon Roll.
The two smaller rolls were 6 pieces and cost about $6/each. The Pink Dragon Roll was 10 pieces and cost around $11.
The agedashi tofu was to DIE for and our rolls were quite good, but I thought the Pink Dragon Roll was a bit bland for being a specialty roll.
I was stoked to hear that there was finally another sushi place in Morgan Hill. I used to frequent this place a lot during basketball season when I was coaching at Live Oak.
Everything was standard as to any other Japanese restaurant. Nothing special that would set this place apart other than it was in Morgan HIll. If you need a quick fix of sushi or Japanese food and you by chance find yourself stuck in Morgan Hill, go and hit this place up. The service is always excellent and attentive. Never will your drink go empty and you will always get your food/rolls promptly.
Only in the past few months have I really acquired a taste for sushi beyond the typical California roll and Tekka Maki. And in my quest for the perfect sashimi-grade tuna, I have tried several of the sushi places in downtown San Jose to varying degrees of success. So one night, in a fit of desperation for something other than burgers, Italian food or burritos in Morgan Hill, I managed to Yelp across Hanami Sushi. What a lucky find!
The restaurant itself is clean and well-lighted, with tasteful decor and the music set at a level that you can hear it but still quietly converse with your table-mate. Our server was busy but attentive (it was a Saturday night and the restaurant was about 3/4 full) and actually had to come back a couple times before I could finally decide which of the myriad selections of nigri/sashimi/maki I wanted to order.
I ended up ordering the salmon, yellowtail, tuna rolls and eel (mmmmmm...Unagi!) and was amazed at the quality of the sushi set before me. My selections were arranged artfully around my plate, and I noticed that there was a generous portion of sashimi to each portion of rice. The tuna was the wondrous light pink and oh-so-delicate, and I finally realized why some people are absolutely obsessed with raw salmon--when it's really, really good it has the most incredible soft buttery taste! And the unagi was simply the best I've ever had. Hot and fresh and a little bit crisp. Who knew that eel could be so good? The yellowtail was also very good, and my husband seemed to enjoy whichever roll he had ordered. Lucky for me, he had eaten a late lunch--so I got to finish what he couldn't eat!
So if you're ever in the mood for the best sushi in the South Bay, and you don't mind the drive down to Morgan Hill, come find Hanami Sushi squirreled away in a tiny strip mall on the east side of the 101. My quest for the perfect sushi has been completed--all hail Hanami Sushi!
Hanami Sushi is my favorite sushi restaurant in town. Staff is very friendly and prices are reasonable. My boyfriend and I love their Dragon roll...sooo yummy!
Hanami Sushi is the best Japanese restaurant in all of Morgan Hill and quite possibly San Jose!
If for some reason you happen to be in Morgan Hill please be sure to stop by Hanami Sushi! The sushi chef is humble (as they all should be) and makes great rolls. Other items to consider (besides sushi) are: pork cutlet with curry rice, tempura (light and fluffy), and beef/chicken teriyaki.
There are many Japanese restaurants in Morgan Hill, but this one is the best and Japanese owned! The restaurant is spotless, the decor is simple, and the (only?) lady who works here is incredibly sweet. Their motto reads, "Fresh Everyday" and after having dinner here, I certainly agree!
Mmmmmmm.... love Sushi!!! A very nice restaurant, nice staff, and good food!! :) This is the first Sushi restaurant that I have tried in Morgan Hill so far, and we were both very happy with our meals.
We were there on a Saturday night, and it wasn't too busy... probably because everyone is out Xmas shopping :) The service was really fast... I had my main dish in front of me before I had a chance to finish the soup or salad.
We will go again!! :)
Yeah this place is pretty much the best for Sushi, i read thge reviews about people ordering bento boxes thus not liking the place, so i didnt order the bentos and just got the sushi. The Hokai roll is hella good, and also the Dragon Roll. I've been to a lot of sushi bars, and this is the best i've gone to
I love this place, the South Bay is really lacking quality Sushi restaurant's and stumbling upon this place was a god sent.
The fish is fresh, the staff is friendly and child friendly.
Other items on the menu are great too.
This restaurant is to access from E. Dunne. There is plenty of parking too! Hanami is clean, the staff friendly, and the service consistent. The sushi is reasonably priced. We order sashimi, spicy tuna rolls, salmon rolls, and the like, regularly. It's always fresh and tasty. The green tea is excellent. The hot sake is good too. We're definitely fans.
We tried take-away dinner from Hanami Sushi last night and were pleased with our experience. We had several standard rolls, and tried one of their specialty rolls and the veggie tempura.
The quality and taste were really good. I'm glad to have found a good sushi place so close to home.
I came here for lunch and was pretty impressed.
The interior was spotless and it was all smiles from the staff which was nice.
I've been meaning to go here for a while and finally had a few dollars so I came for lunch.
The bento box I got was pretty good and the miso soup was piping hot.
Rice was fresh and I got to try the yellow tail roll, rock n roll, and my meal came with a California roll.
Everything tasted great and the wasabi / ginger was fresh as well.
Portions weren't as big as AOI Sushi across town but it was pretty damn good!
I want to come back when I got 50 or 60 bucks so I can try a lot of rolls and sashimi.
Oh speaking of the prices are pretty decent. A lot of rolls in the 5 dollar range and the dinner prices aren't overly inflated from lunch (like a lot of places like to do)
If this place offered all you can eat I would surely be down here tryin' to put em out of business....such is life!
I'll be back for sure.
Good place for sushi, they have a decent variety of sushi. Food is very fresh and tastes great. I've been here so many times for lunch they memorized my order each time I come in. Their staff is small but are very friendly.
Finally as Sushi bar in Morgan Hill where I can get my weekly fix :) This place is really clean, the fish is very fresh, I only wish they served Toro. The service is promt and very friendly. If you live in Morgan Hill, and not tried Hanami, then your missing out. Either way its well worth a drive to Morgan Hill.
A group of us went there on a Sunday night. We found this restaurant to have the best Sushi in Morgan Hill, well decorated, and the service to be pretty good.
We didn't try the sushi bar (there was no sushi in the boats at the time - maybe it was being made to order due to Sunday night or something) but next time, I'll give it a try.
Hanami's is a great find in a small strip mall. Once you get past the smell of the Mushroom compost and get inside you're in for a real treat. Very creative sushi. Try it and go to the Gelato place next door.
I came here with my boyfriend, his sister, his cousin, and the babies to get some sushi to go. We ordered two California Rolls, two Spicy Tuna rolls, and one of the Spider rolls. The order was ready in 15 minutes. The seafood was quality grade and we still had some sushi left after dinner.
Let me begin by saying that I am a sushi snob! Good sushi doesn't always come in deep fried rolls. I actually am from Walnut Creek and work in San Francisco, so am quite familiar with many good sushi joints in the bay area. I frequently visit my boyfriend in Morgan Hill and have held the opinion that food in Morgan Hill in general is sub-par. But this place really impressed me to where I had to get a yelp account and share. I had some rolls which were very good (they don't skimp on the filling), and I LOVED the Hamachi Sashimi and Tuna Poke Salad. The sashimi was extremely fresh and the salad had a very light tangy dressing that didn't overpower the tuna. I highly recommend it.
Thank goodness for good food in Morgan Hill.
Does Hanami mean INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS in Japanese ? This place will make your pallet quiver with pleasure. I really enjoyed their well crafted sushi rolls that seemed to melt in my mouth. The seafood ingredients smelled and tasted fresh. This is what makes their sushi addictive and what separates this restaurant from their competition in Morgan Hill. The two sushi chefs keep their working space impeccably clean - an absolute must when working with raw fish. I've been here a few times, but I'm really impressed by the establishment's dedication to high quality ingredients, cleanness and keeping the menu focused. If you have a question, the staff is knowledgeable and courteous. I truly enjoy visiting Hanami Sushi - a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
My sister Tiffany has been raving about Hanami Sushi ever since she ate here about a year ago. I finally came here for dinner a few weeks ago for the first time and I liked it a lot. I got to try the Sunrise Roll and a 3 item dinner which consisted of pork cutlet, sashimi, and something else that I don't remember. The dinner also came with the usual miso soup and salad. Everything tasted nice and fresh to me! I like the environment too - it's bright and airy, has nice wood floors, and it's clean. The employees are also nice. I would definitely go again. Oh yeah, as some other reviewers mentioned, I also smelled something yucky outside the restaurant but I didn't smell it inside so I think it might be from somewhere else.
The best place for sushi in Morgan Hill by far. The sushi chefs were both trained in Japan, which helps a lot in my opinion. They dont slather every roll in sweet sauce and are happy to let the flavor of the fish shine through. Janet, the owner, is extremely friendly and accomodating. Definitely check out the specials menu too as it changes often and some of their best things are up there. Their regular salmon skin roll (not hand roll) is the best I've ever had.
Sweet peeps and the food is very, very good. Also, Hanami is very clean. I wish they were in San Francisco!
My husband and I love this place. We have been to the other sushi restaurants in Morgan Hill and this one is our favorite. They always have great service, they have lower prices than the other restaurants, and there sushi is always fresh. I am a picky eater and they even let me customize my sushi.
My wife is Japanese American so when we moved to the South Bay a year and a half ago we knew we needed to find a good place for Sushi and other Japanese food. I think we have tried every Japanese place in Gilroy and Morgan Hill. That may not be 100% correct. After we discovered Hanami Sushi, we stopped looking. We live in Gilroy so we probably drive by 5-6 other options to get to this place, but it's worth it. This place is great. A few weeks back the in-laws were visiting and even my Mother-in-law, who grew up in Japan, gave it two thumbs up. To me, that is the ultimate approval of any Japanese place.
My wife normally orders a combo dinner with sashimi, gyoza, and tempura. I get their box "C" off the take out menu + a spider roll. We have also tried and liked other options, but these are our default orders.
Highly recomended.
I love this place, very inexpensive and yummy!
Very tasty, good prices and friendly service. Atmosphere is very nice.
Soup was one of the tasiests I have had.
If you're looking for fresh sushi in Morgan Hill, look no further. The first thing I noticed about this place was its cleanliness. The tables and seats were clean and orderly, the restaurant was well lit with an abundance of natural light, and even the sushi boats were lacquered and well kept.
I ordered quickly and the food arrived promptly. The unagi was awesome, very tender upon a bed of soft rice. The maguro and sake nigiri were also very fresh, and with generous proportion to the rice. The miso was excellent as well.
They definitely have regulars too as there were two pick up orders, and three more dine-in customers, all arriving after me, who were greeted like friends.
Excellent service, fair price for the great quality food, and a very hospitable environment. I'll be returning for sure.
Great little find on our road trips between the Peninsula and SLO. Having lived 12 years in Japan, I can confirm its the real McCoy. Everyone very accommodating. Fish was very fresh and preparation authentic.
Good Japanese food. Great bento boxes and great service.
We tried Hanami after reading several good yelp reviews. Good prompt service. We had primarily sushi and the fish was very good, wonderful texture and flavor.
My husband, daughter and I have eaten here more times to count! We've actually only eaten in around 3 or 4 times, but have ordered takeout countless times. The owner recognizes my voice over the phone and ALWAYS gets our order correct. She is always polite and full of charm no matter how busy it gets in there. My sister and I have gone in with my daughter (2) and her son (1) and we are always taken care of. The fish is fresh and well priced. I think their chirashi bowl is the best priced and most filling I have ever had!
I come here almost once a week! It is the best sushi restaurant in Morgan Hill, although I do love Ichiban as well. We're on a first name basis with the owner (who is also the waitress) and she tries so hard to be accomodating. Keep in mind, this place hasn't been around for that long so I think they're still trying to make a name for themselves in the area. I'm really glad other people are catching on! I recommend the creamy scallop hand roll, salmon skin roll, and the pink dragon roll. Their agidashi tofu is also delicious. My dad LOVES the curry, if that's what you're into. If you're in Morgan Hill, you must try this place!
