I mainly ate the special roll, with some sashimi and regular rolls. I have to say that everything we had were super excellent. The rolls were fresh and each of the special rolls was pretty unique and interesting; a really perfect combination of ingredients, everything just blend in really well.
I can't remember exactly what we ordered, but the TNT and Todd rolls were I think the best. This is a hidden gem guys, no wait when I came but the food was vastly better than other Japanese restaurants that get better or more reviews. -

I ordered this because they offered Grub Hub delivery and were rated 4-stars on both Grub Hub and Yelp. The ratings couldn't have been more wrong!
The delivery to my hotel (Sheraton Commander) couldn't have been slower - it took an hour.
The miso was okay - just okay though with a tiny amount of tofu and seaweed and the power not really dissolved. The green salad was fresh, but the dressing was odd and chunky - more of a dip than a dressing.
The salmon avo roll and the cucumber avo roll were fine. Not bad, but not great. I also ordered a combo of three rolls. I'm so thankful for over ordering because the combo rolls were awful. The fish was not fresh!
Finally they gave me two small containers not even 1/3 full of soy sauce and a tiny helping of ginger. This place is not worth the ratings and I would NEVER go here again! -

Accepts Amex! Tastes like yum!
This was my second time there. The first time I dined there I was surprised at how small the place is, and I had my doubts. The second time, the same feeling came to mind. I mean, this place is small! However, the food will defy those expectations.
This time, in addition to the sushi (of which I ordered a large variety - I love ordering a large variety of maki and rolls) I ordered the scallop teriyaki, with the intent of trying a little bit, and saving most of it for lunch the next day. The scallops were excellent. They were served with white rice, miso soup (which I had neglected to decline as I can't have tofu, I had to apologise to the server and send it back), garden salad with a ginger dressing (which is excellent), assorted roasted vegetables (carrots, asparagus, etc) and of course the scallops. The scallops - oh my. The scallops are wonderful! So sweet, so tender! It was absolutely delightful, and while it was not quite as good the next day, it was still very yummy.
Now, as far as the sushi is concerned? The Boston Maki, Philadelphia roll, spicy salmon maki, and all the usual maki you would expect were great. The spider roll (soft shell crab) was good, but honestly I've had better. Soft shell crab is difficult to get right, and it also depends on the time of year. But it was still quite good, and I'm sure I'll be back yet again, and will order the spider roll as well. -

My husband and I went at 7:30 Saturday night, found street parking close by and fairly quickly. We were surprised to find only a few customers at 7:30 pm. (it picked up after 8 p.m.) Service was good except we did not like using the cheap wooden takeout chopsticks and they did not offer us a clean plate after our first course. We ordered a sushi combo plate and split it. The fish was fresh, okay, but not great. Seaweed salad was decent, miso soup a little light on the miso but not bad. The hot sake tasted watered down and not very hot; better to order japanese beer which we did after the first sake. Overall, I would go again only if in the area probably. I would rate the restaurant good overall but far from great.

I don't review a lot of restaurants (at least not yet) but I have such a great experience every time I eat at Hana Sushi that I just had to write one. it always amazes me that they aren't packed to the gills every night. The sushi here is among the best I've had with plenty of interesting specialty rolls as well as solid standbys to choose from. Everything is always super fresh and gorgeously presented. Although some might say it's a bit lacking in decor, the ambiance is modern, crisp and clean. I personally enjoy the simplicity and uncluttered but intimate feeling of the space there. Service is also consistently excellent at Hana. Wait staff are always courteous and attentive but never intrusive. It's definitely a standby for me and my girlfriend. A real hidden gem on Mass Ave!

We came to Hana Sushi for dinner a couple of weeks ago and were very impressed! The prices were very fair, and everything was very tasty.
When we arrived (about 8:30 on a Friday night), the restaurant was very quiet--we had no problem getting a table, despite the fact that there are only 10-15 tables in the restaurant (and a sushi bar). Like other reviewers have mentioned, I wasn't blown away by the decor. The restaurant is small inside and feels a bit sterile--aside from a couple of small fishtanks, there's not much character to the room. That being said, if you're focused mostly on the food and ambiance isn't a concern, this is definitely an excellent spot to get your sushi fix.
The menu is pretty typical of storefront-type Japanese restaurants. Appetizer offerings include dumplings, soups, salads, tempura, etc. In addition to the extensive sushi menu, there are cooked entree options including tempura, terriyaki, katsu, and noodle dishes. We started out by splitting an order each of the steamed shumai and oshitashi. The shumai were fabulous: they were cooked perfectly so that the consistency was nice and soft, but not too soft or mushy. The oshitashi--cooked, chilled spinach with sesame seeds--was also quite tasty. It's a great choice if you aren't crazy about seaweed, but like the flavor of seaweed salad. I also had a miso soup, which was tasty, if not particularly remarkable.
For our entrees, we ordered a selection of sushi and sashimi from the a la carte menu. There are also a variety of sushi dinner options, which are a little less expensive than ordering a la carte, but don't give you much say over what you're going to be served. While all of the fish tasted very fresh, the salmon was definitely the standout of the boat. We ordered it both raw and smoked and it was fabulous both ways. I was amazed at how tender and creamy the fish was--it was definitely the best smoked salmon sushi I've had to date! One final note on the menu... be sure to check out the special rolls on the back of the a la carte menu (we failed to do this). They have some interesting choices if you're into more novel rolls.Listed in: Two Years at Tufts

I like how Hana Sushi is low key compared to some of the sushi joints in the Back Bay that are uber trendy. However I did not think that the quality of the fish was very good. I'd have to be very daring to go back.

This is probably my favourite sushi on the East Coast. (Ebisu is my favourite on the West Coast.) I found it through some Japanese grad-student friends, who said it was the best in Boston.
It's a small, family-run place, and the wait-staff all recognize me even though I live in the midWest. The French Kiss is the best of the special rolls, and I find the Ikura to be the best way to distinguish good sushi from bad.
Sometimes you'll be lucky enough to be served one of Mom's special desserts, not on the menu. -

Found this place on http://restaurant.com, where I bought a $25 gift certificate for $2. I came in a group of three for dinner around 6:30, and the place was pretty quiet.
I have to say, the front of the restaurant was very underwhelming. It's kind of squeezed in between two other stores and has a really minimal front display.
The food however, was excellent. We had the steamed shumai and beef negima for appetizers. The shumai was perfect, and the negima was very tasty, although the beef could have been a little rarer.
We were very happy with the maki we ordered. The fish tasted fresh, and the avocados were buttery and tender.
The service was fine as well, the waitress was always there exactly when she needed to be. We didn't wait forever to pay or order.
I will definitely be back again. -
Review from Jonny C.
Yessir. I adore the sush here. Really, truly adore. In a stretch of North Cambridge populated exclusively by pizza and Middle Eastern eateries, Hana stands out as some of the best sushi I've had in Boston.
The menu is exactly what you'd expect from your run of the mill Japanese joint (some noodles, apps and salads in addition to sushi) but the quality is vastly superior - while the prices are slightly less expensive. If you are dining Thurs-Sat evening, prepare for a wait as the cat is out of the bag- raw fish lovers city wide make the trek to north Mass Ave to get the goods.
My only two criticisms: the decor is nice, but the whole front wall of the restaurant is unadorned. In a neighborhood packed with artists and studios, you'd think that the folks at Hana would have been approached by a budding artist looking to exhibit/sell and give the place some aesthetic punch.
Point two- their is a vague odor upon entering that isnt bad- it is just a little weird.
Still, my hands down go to for Cambridge sushi. -

I came here and the miso soup was decent.
I had the spicy tuna and hamachi rolls and they were just okay. The tempura shrimp roll was quite unpleasant.
There was no "spiciness" in the spicy tuna roll. I found all of my sushi to be quite bland and am disappointed in this place, I really really wanted to like it, but ... meh. -

I found this place on http://Restaurant.com and decided to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did. The sushi, from a value standpoint, is excellent. The rolls are fresh and they have a few really cool and unusual choices, as well as all the standard maki and specialty rolls. We tried the steamed dumplings as an appetizer, and they were awesome as well.
It's a no-frills dining experience to say the least, which is fine. I kid you not when I say that there is NOTHING hanging on the walls of the entire restaurant, but I'm definitely looking forward to going back to Hana sometime in the near future. -

I've had my heart set on this place in NH and cannot seem to find a single comparison, well Hana just proved me wrong. Amazing service, very cute and relaxing atmosphere, and deliciousssss fish!
I had the "Sashimi Tostada" which was creative and delicious. The crispy round came with tuna salmon and I think white tuna, and drizzled with peanut sauce! Yum, never had peanut on my sashimi!
The French Kiss roll was too delicious to describe. It was a great combination of fish.
Plus, can't beat the prices! They are the same as my favorite in little ol' NH, so for the area they are a steal!
My new go-to for sushi! -

The best sushi in Boston. At least that's the opinion of my friend and I. Everything was very fresh, the specialty rolls were interesting and very tasty, and even the old standby the Rainbow Roll was much better than anything I've had before.
My only caveat is that I'm a 'roll' sort of guy, so obviously if you're more interested in Omakase or sashimi, I can't comment, though all of their fish was very good, so I imagine their sashimi is excellent. -

So very tasty! I got the seaweed salad (personal favorite dish of mine - so healthy!), miso soup, and I think it was the New York roll? It had salmon, avocado, and APPLE. It was really really delicious. The apple gave it that awesome hint of sweetness to balance out the bitterness of the avocado and great texture. The delivery man was nice, too, which always helps. Definitely will be ordering again.

I got a http://restaurant.com certificate for this place and probably wouldn't have noticed it otherwise because it has a small store front and is far enough down on Mass Ave (towards Arlington) that it's not as visable as restaurants in Porter. I'm really glad I had a reason to seek it out because it was great! The service was exceptional and the sushi was fresh and tasty.
They had a wide variety of maki rolls and I don't know if anyone else cares about this, but they serve soda from a fountain. (I've noticed a lot of sushi places serve you a can when you order a coke and I hate that!) The wait staff was really attentive and fast- another plus!
The staff was so friendly, they all said thank you as we walked through the restaurant on our way out. It was a great end to a great experience. -
Review from Deanna D.
Hana is my 2nd favorite sushi spot in Cambridge. From the restaurant doesn't look like anything special but inside its small but very clean and simply decorated. The service has always been great. We've sat at tables as well as at the bar and have always been well taken care off.
The menu has lots of great options and the prices are very reasonable given the quality and portions. I have no complaints about anything I've ordered here but some standout rolls include: French Kiss, Cherry Blossom, Spider, Alaska, and Spicy Maguro. The sushi is very, very fresh, the rolls are creative and the presentation is lovely.
I will definitely keep coming back for more! -

Gross. Ordered 3 rolls for delivery, spicy tuna had no taste, sweet potato roll was mushy and bland, and scallop roll what I thought was baked was raw and slimy! Disappointed cause I was craving sushi so bad!! I'd stick with blu fin around here.

Pleasantly surprised! I had a http://restaurant.com gift certificate, and just like a previous reviewer, I would never have gone here otherwise. I didn't even know it was there - which brings me to my only real complaint (sorry to start with a complaint, but there you go): The decor. Well, there is no decor, so don't be put off by the bare walls and rather spartan environment. This place really is worth visiting, and the bathroom was very clean and smelled nice. A big deal, I think.
Like a previous reviewer said, the Tostada was weirdly delicious, and I don't really like peanut in my food. It's called the "Hana Tostada" now, I guess, and for $6, it's quite a bit of fresh fish piled on this cute little tostada rounds. Again, pleasantly surprised.
I got my usual assortment of sushi and maki (Mostly salmon and vegetables), and the tamago (egg) was adequate. Again, like a prior reviewer, I, too, have a standard for sushi that is also in NH (Though mine is different, I asked her): Sakurabana in Portsmouth. What is the deal with NH sushi places? Now, the closest I have found is (usually) FuGakYu in Brookline (Sudbury is good, too, but not the same). Hana is also coming in strong.
The fish was fresh, the amount of fish was good, and the prices were excellent. 3 of us ate our fill with leftovers for $111 ($85 after the $50 certificate and adding in the tip). TOTALLY worth it. Carla and Anna (Aaron's sister and Carla's eldest if you read my reviews) split a special maki called the TNT - they loved it. It was $13.95 and quite substantial.
Our waitress was very sweet and quite good - just the right amount of attention, though we wanted steamed shumai and got fried, but they were so good we didn't care. All in all, we had a great time and will definitely be back. Thanks! -

I've ordered delivery from Hana on a number of occassions (they're on grubhub, foodler, and seamlessweb i believe) and anyone else who uses online ordering websites, there is certainly something to be said for the consistency and quality of product.
If you get exasperated with waiting an hour between ordering and delivery, you should relax. Hana usually takes about a full hour, sometimes a little more or less. Sushi delivery is often a toss up and raw fish is not typically something you want to gamble with, but I have never been disappointed in the quality... the rice is always cooked well (as a side, as well) and the fish is always a desirable texture, temperature and scent (like the sea... not a can of Starkist).
Cost wise, I definitely think Hana is competitive... their avacado makis (6 piece) come in at something like $3.50 and I don't think their fancier fare exceeds $15. I usually get the Boston Roll, Alaska Roll and Shrimp Shumai - all of which I would recommend. They lose a star on their non-sushi dinners; I tried some friend chicken concoction just once and was underwhelmed by the dry meat and lack of sauce/flavor. Local delivery is $2 extra... the delivery guys are always polite and friendly. I've never come across an incomplete or incorrect order. -
Review from David W.
Roxbury, MA
Hana Sushi is the perfect neighborhood sushi joint. There's nothing fancy or snooty about it, and it's not exactly what I would call "creative" sushi. If you're looking for the newest sushi applications for designer purse leather and blow-torched eel skin, you should move on. But if you're just looking for simple, consistently high-quality food in a quiet, comfortable setting with excellent customer service, all to be had at an excellent price (usually $10-$15 per head, depending on what you order), then you should by all means try this place out.
Highlights: their avocado is always fresh, creamy, and very flavorful; their salmon is always buttery and tender; their steamed gyoza are always perfectly prepared; their oshinko sushi is something that doesn't crop up on a lot of sushi menus in this area, and has a really light, refreshing flavor.
The food here is really good, but the wait staff is what gets this restaurant's fifth star for me. I've been a regular here for a couple of years now, and the waitstaff has always been friendly and welcoming without being overbearing. I was there tonight, having had a day which I would not describe as my finest, and having just polished off a very light dinner of (delicious) avocado rolls and seaweed salad, the waitress brought me and my boyfriend an order of mochi. She said she could tell we needed it. For those of you who are new to the area, this does not happen often in Boston. -

Great local place - my default when I'm craving sushi, and that happens to be pretty frequently. I'm not quite a regular, but pretty close.
They do delivery in the area and are very friendly. Nothing to write home about in terms of specialties (but I compare everything to west coast sushi), but consistently very tasty food.
You can't go wrong here, but it's definitely not the once in a lifetime sushi kind of place. -

Hana sushi is great! I go there pretty frequently nowadays- about once a month. They offer reasonably priced and really delicious sushi. I order a little differently each time I go and have yet to receive something I didn't like.
The staff is always really friendly and actually gives a crap about whether or not you're enjoying your meal and dining experience.
Although it isn't in the middle of a T-accessible square, it always seems to fill up by 6pm. This is testament to it's excellence! -

LOVE Hana! What a great little find...we discovered it thanks to a http://Restaurant.com gift certificate, and then it turned out that my mileage program (United) also offers rewards here. Excellent.
We went simple - a small bottle of sake, 4 different maki (all tasty!), and miso (tasted fresh). The price was comparable to everything else nearby.
Nothing fancy, but cute, simple, and fresh. -

Nom nom nom nom nom. Mmmmmm!
I picked up some "sush" from here this evening and was pleasantly surprised about how oh so delicious it was.
I had:
Miso soup: standard if not a wee bit too salty
Salmon Nigiri: I DIE. Buttery and melt in my mouth.
Tobiko Nigiri: Red tobiko mmm mmm good.
Eel and Avocado: Fan-freakin-tastic.
I'm still hungry though...but that's my own fault for not ordering enough. I will defiantly be ordering delivery now that I know how good it is.
THE END.
Pssssst....hey you over there, I have a good tip:
Call Hana while ordering delivery and it's FREE (Arlington and Somerville). Ordering through their online menu or Grubhub charges you between 3-6 bucks for delivery. That's another order of Nigiri! Yeah, you can thank me latah. -

My roommate and I were craving sushi and man did we get it. After a quick glance at the yelp reviews for sushi places and taking into consideration that we didn't want to go farther than five miles, we picked Hana.
When we first arrived we were warmly greeted by a waitress in the nearly empty restaurant. We quickly received our requested water, and soon placed our order.
The reviews don't lie! The miso soup was one of the best I've ever had. With just the right ratio of miso, tofu, and seaweed, it was a great way to start the meal.
However, I might have given Hana five stars if our main course (about 40 pieces of sushi) hadn't taken at least 45 minutes. Now, by that time, the place was packed, and I'm not sure the wait time was usual, but it was about 15 minutes too long for me. (and I am a pretty patient person)
When it did did finally arrive, it was FANTASTIC. Fresh, flavorful and beautifully prepared, it was well worth the wait! -

Stellar service. They go above and beyond more-so than any other sushi place I've ever been to. I've been to a LOT of places in the city but this takes the cake.
The service, as I've said before, is top notch. They have my loyalty based on that alone, but the food here is fantastic as well! Definitely top ranking in the Boston and surrounding cities area. A must try for anyone that calls themselves a sushi enthusiast ;)
Pricy, yes. But come for lunch in that case. It's worth every penny! -

Review from David V.
Hana Sushi is a solid but unremarkable neighborhood sushi joint. The decor is punctuated by a couple of small aquariums and not much else. Not sure if it's a minimalist approach or if they just haven't gotten around to painting or putting up any artwork.
The servers are friendly and attentive, though there was a long gap between our order and the arrival of the first appetizer. The chicken yakitori hit the spot, and the yellowtail collar appetizer was a large crescent-shaped piece of flaky white fish cooked just right.
The nigiri was pretty good, but I've encountered fresher fish for lower prices before. Nothing was off - but for $5, I expect my salmon nigiri to be melt-in-mouth buttery. There was a page of fancy maki but none of the combinations jumped off the menu at me. Ended up going with a simple salmon/avocado maki and a spicy yellowtail, but after one bite I realized we were mistakenly brought the spicy tuna maki. No biggie, but quality sushi emphasizes attention to detail.
I'll keep this place in the rotation, but it'll probably be relegated for times when I'm hanging out near Davis Square or North Cambridge. -
Review from simon l.
Hanna sushi is the all that. Always consistent. Always fresh, always amazing. I have ordered the sashimi special set for 4 years and it has always been perfect. Served with a small bowl of steamed rice on which to eat your perfect pieces of sashimi. First you have some delicious miso soup, plenty of seaweed and tofu, perfect temperature. Sake served by the bottle, certainly order at least two. On this Thursday night special, overwhelmed again. I love this place, love it.
The sashimi set is wonderful, fresh tuna, salmon, white tuna, broiled eel, surf clam, mackerel. Amazing, as always. Bowl of steamed rice. We added a TNT roll, delicious. I ordered an order of the salmon roe sushi, also delicious, with a perfect amount of wasabi. Friend had the same and was equally impressed. To finish, we had chef's taste of the hamachi toro and some green tea ice cream. If you have never had toro, try it, this is a special cut that is not always available and worth every flavor bud in gold. You can't go wrong at this place. Pleasant servers, nice atmosphere, modern digs. Hit it often. -

100 reviews, 4 stars, in my new hood? Let's go to a new sushi joint!
The first time there will not be our last. It was wonderful. Super fresh, local names (hello Boston Maki), attentive waitstaff and a delicious product. The sushi is top notch and the prices will make your wallet super happy ($13 for the dinner maki meal: 3 rolls and miso soup, sign me up!). Online ordering, in case we want to eat in, it's on!
Seriously, I could go for some more right now. -

Astoria, Queens, NY
A craving for sushi and a desire to stay in led me to Foodler, which led me to several sushi joints, which led me back to Yelp to see if any of these sushi joints that delivered to Cambridge were any good, which led me, ultimately, to Hana Sushi.
Well-priced and fresh, Hana offers your typical Japanese menu selection, including noodles dinners, seawood salads, tempura and teriyaki dishes, plus a decent selection of sushi and sashimi plates. The 10-piece Sashimi Regular is a great deal at $16, which comes with rice and miso soup. Great cuts of fish, not too large and very fresh.
The sticker shock came when, although my meal priced out at $16, the total for my dinner with delivery (and 20% tip for the driver) came out to a whopping $29.70! Here I was, thinking I was getting a stellar deal on some great sushi and I was slapped with a $5.99 delivery fee on top of tax and tip. Thinking it was a mistake or a Foodler-related fee, I double checked Hana's website, where they charge $4.99. Considering most of the delivery I order is free, that just seems like a frivolous charge. Great sushi at a great price, but keep the delivery fees in mind! -

As soon as we walked in there was a waft of fishy odor-- I think it was from the fish tank, but alas, it set the mood for our meal. The seaweed salad and the fried tofu appetizers were delicious, but the sushi itself fell sort of the mark. The yellowtail with scallions was acceptable as was the tuna sashimi. I was disappointed by both the spider roll and the hamachi tempura roll. Everyone else has commented on how fresh their sushi has been here, so perhaps by coming in for dinner on a Sunday night we caught them off their game, but my dinner here left much to be wanted.

Solid sushi joint. It helps that they participate on http://restaurant.com (I probably wouldn't trek all the way to Somerville for sushi otherwise). The people there are super-nice and the sushi is always very fresh. My only complaint is that the menu is not diverse enough, and many of their rolls revolve around "crabstick salad" which has mayonnaise in it (gross). We end up getting the same thing every time because of the lack of diversity on the menu, which can get a bit old. If they expanded their sushi menu this could be a five-star place.
