I used to come here all the time when I was in middle school - cheap sushi + middle school students = yes.

The lady there is pleasant. I make sure to tip her whenever I sit down to eat there, because she's been good throughout the years.

Sometimes you get an issue with freshness, but most of the time the sushi's great. It's a good cheap fix, so don't come here expecting top-grade ingredients.

Eh.
I use to go to the ghetto cosmetology school across the street and it was convenient in my 30-minute 'lunch'. Since El camino is infested with fastfood joints i resorted to grabbing a bite to eat here.

one time i was waiting for my sushi and the guy shoved his hairy ass arm into the rice to  smash the rice on the seaweed. Ewweee.
Another time my amiga found a hair in her food. Double eww. same hairy guy? i bet.
this series of event resulted in major face cringing and  multiple squaking ewww's!!!
Now, i have reason to believe that Salt and peppa wrote this song especially for hana sushi:
"Neva gonna get it neva gonna get it. Uh uhh. "

Well, the first three times I went to Hana Sushi I absolutely HATED it.
I bought food twice and the third time accompanied my friends. Everything just tasted so off. There wasn't one thing I enjoyed here.

I recently noticed that Hana had been fixed up a bit and is under new management so I decided to give it another chance on my lunch break yesterday.. surprisingly it was WONDERFUL.

I had the best tuna and salmon rolls i'd ever had in my life. The california rolls were great too. The prices have rised, but I can't complain because I got my moneys worth. The fish was fresh and bright. If you've had a bad experience at Hana I suggest you give it a second chance.

The word hasn't really gotten around yet, so spread it!

It's 11am, want sushi, and want it now. Tried to go to Under the Sea, they didn't open till 11:30. Drove back towards Sushi O Sushi, same story. What the heck? Do your ears fall off if you eat sushi before Young and the Restless starts?

Okay, so now you know my guilty pleasure...here's something that I isn't such a secret...Hana sushi isn't fresh. The water is pretty bad too.

But, they are open at 11am. So, one star for you!

Ill take one order of "what the hell is that" and an order of "never again" to go please!

I decided to stop here since it down the street from and then i wish id kept on going.  I had two rolls the spicy tuna and another specialty roll.  Both rolls were extremely mushy and had a weird "I'm eating paste" feel to it.  I can tell that the ingredients were not fresh at all.

The place is cheap though!  If you not really into sushi and want to save some dough i guess you would come.  Do yourself a favor and go a couple of doors down to Sushi-O-Sushi.

The food quality is terrible!  The place is not clean either.

They gave me a used spoon.  There wasn't so many customer when we were there, and you wouldn't think they would make this kind of mistake.

The teriyaki dish tastes "smoky" - like someone who just finished smoking made the food.

Not visiting there again!

The prices are pretty cheap here but well, the place itself just lacks interest to me.

It's a bit run down on the in and outside and doesn't really seem like an inviting place on the inside.  While debating to walk in or not I was really torn.  Could a place that looks that run down be good?

Walking in it's a very small place, maybe 10ish tables. It's a low ceiling square room with the tables in rows in front of the main counter.  It's kind of akward and super out dated.

The waitress was sweet, attentive and nice though.  That always helps for me.

The tea was sort of icky and had an odd taste but my friend liked it.  But the sushi was fresh, the portions were fairly given and over all the food was good.  The miso was pretty good and not too salty.  The quality of the rolls were equal to their price and I left satified.

Go if you want cheaper sushi, not for the ambience.

This is the worst sushi I have ever had in my life.  I ordered about 3 different rolls, and immediately after I ordered, the lady goes around the corner, and 5 seconds later comes out with my food ready.  How long was it sitting there?

It seems that most of the Korean owned restaurants on the El Camino strip have all been church members of mine and Hana Maki is no exception. The individuals that run Hana Maki are pretty friendly and are attentive to their customer's needs and that is satisfactory.

But, tea is a huge part for me and when I taste bad tea, I has a bad time. Hana Maki should probably just stick to water or soda as I felt as if I was drinking lukewarm theraflu. Atrocious.

One shouldn't really expect much quality as the price reflects the contents and is at best, mediocre. During my high school years, I'd come here every so often with a couple of friends on the occasion we craved some rolls, and we'd head over down the street for a quick eat. The general outlook of the place is small and can't really attend to many people but it's a great place to chillax and eat underpriced sushi/chicken donburi bowls/etc.

The portions were in my opinion, scant, and I wasn't really content with the "fullness" factor. You may have to order more than one dish if you're a pretty heavy eater.

There are many other sushi places that are better eats but if you're looking for the cheapest price for a quick bite, try it out.

Don't be lured in by their "CA rolls $1.49"... they ain't that cheap!

This place is priced a bit lower than the average sushi joint mainly because the ambiance isn't comparable to the others down on El Camino.

My previous experiences with Hana Maki's were mediocre... nothing really to complain about except the weird stares my friend and I got while dining there.

... SO recently, my boyfriend and I grabbed lunch and then...

...And then I got food poisoning! This wasn't any ordinary food poisoning, I was shitting my intestines out for 4 days straight. All I ate was the damn tempura veggie rolls, soup, and edamame. WTF? My boyfriend was suffering the same as well.

Don't be lured in by the "$1.49", don't eat soy sauce marinated mini-flies.... don't eat here. Just don't.

Ugh.

Like everyone else has said, if you want good sushi at a great price come here.

First, I would like to say Sushi O Sushi, which is a couple stores down, is definitely NOT the same price.  It's more expensive, but you're paying for a nicer atmosphere.

I always order the Crazy Monkey roll and Philly Roll.  I would say you couldn't spend more than $20 to get completely stuffed.  I usually spend like $15 and I can eat a lot.

This is a hole in the wall sushi place.  The quality is decent and so are the proportions.  The prices are very reasonable.  It doesn't have all the amenities that other places have, but the sushi is decent and takes good.  It's a great sushi on the fly place as the atmosphere is laid back and casual.

if you want an awesome hipster vibe with a bar/lounge, then this place is obviously not for you - go to Blowfish for that.

I was first introduced to Hana Maki by a friend about a year and a half ago, and I've been heading there for a quick fix of sushi if I ever want some without spending $9 on two pieces of sashimi. This place doesn't look much from the outside, but trust me when I say that you'll get your money's worth when you come here. My orders usually end up totalling just under $10 which is more than enough to make me full.

As far as cleanliness goes, I haven't run into anything major like finding flies in my soy sauce, etc. But I'll be sure to edit this review if I do.

I've probably been to over a dozen sushi restaurants and this by far is the worst one. I don't mean to be harsh, but the filling for their california rolls is disgusting.  I was there with a friend and had to pretend I enjoyed my food. Well, at least the staff was nice.

i used to adore this place when i was a broke college kid trying to get my sushi "fix" wherever i could afford it... ah, yes... the days pre-refined "sushi-snob" sharon... [i think its funny how every Californian assumes they KNOW good sushi when they've never been to japan themselves... even though i fall in that category as well... we're such spoiled and privileged individuals!  =P]

its not as bad as it sounds though, with these other reviews all over the place with its "1 ,2 ,3 ,4 ,5" star reviews.  on a budget for a few rolls for lunch - it really isn't so bad.  rolls avg. between $4-10 for rolls w/ anywhere from 4-10 pieces.  economical... no?

i have to admit this WAS the first time I've ever been exposed to a tempura deep fried roll before... which was the GODZILLA roll... i fell in love instantly, but it was always a hit or miss... sometimes it would be crispy and fried to perfection... other times, it would taste as though I'm chewing through a pillowy layer of non-sense to get to my unagi... cruel and unusual for an addict scraping up the last few bits and pieces of change laying around her car/room for sushi/sustenance... so i always ordered a dragon roll as a backup, because if ANY sushi place manages to botch a dragon roll, then that's my cue to high-tail it out of there... and hana maki makes a decent dragon roll for a good price.

this place is great to educate the young adult about what combinations there exists in the sushi world, but not a good place for the refined palette of a veteran self proclaimed sushi-snob.

the service here is great though - seems mom and pop owned, because i always had the same lady taking my orders... prep time for your food is fairly decent, but who am i to complain for sushi on a budget?  during the COLD winter evenings, they'll start you out with a complimentary bowl of miso while you wait for your food to warm yourself up.  a very sweet gesture indeed.  i have not been there since last year, but I've graduated from your school of sushi, and its time for me to explore other restaurant horizons... thank you, hana maki, for helping me figure out what i like... and what i don't like.  i promise to take this knowledge to further my sushi education/experiences and explore new ingredients available to me.  i will miss the days you placated me when i asked for more avocados on my dragon roll, and you piled it on high because i was once a regular starving student...

i am sorry i have not returned because although i still find myself a starving student, i am willing to dig myself into an eternity of debt for good consistent sushi...

hana maki, i miss your prices... if only your sushi got better or remained consistent - i would gratefully return, and my wallet would thank you by filling up my belly.

Looking for a cheap sushi place, this was the recommended place.
The place isn't small, but it's not big either.

So with a party of 2 at 12, the place was empty! except for 2 other party's there.

The menu is a 3 flap type with lots of pictures.  They offer bento, lunch specials starting at 5.99 and up, udon, and a variety of sushi.  (No specials of the day here)

Regular rolls (Rice/fish/seaweed wrap) starts at 1.49 to 3.99.

we ordered:
salmon roll, Godzilla, Crazy horse, and combo #1 (teryaki chicken)

The salmon roll (2.50) consisted of seaweed wrapping rice and salmon.  these things were tiny, and lacked flavor.  I LOVE SALMON, but this sucked.

The Crazy Horse consisted of rice, seaweed, salmon, han..somethng fish, and some fish eggs.  It didn't taste all that great.

Overall, the food was cheap (compared to other sushi places) but you get what you pay....

I used to love this place...keywords: "used to"

The prices are great, and the service from the owner is great. The food was good, until one day I had lunch there, and as I was pouring the soy sauce into the mini saucer, I noticed those little flys in my soy sauce. So I though, maybe it was already on the dish. So I asked for another dish and proceeded to pour another dish. To my amazement, I find more mini flies. I looked at the bottom of the soy sauce bottle and found a pile of them sunken at the bottom of the soy sauce bottle. I kindly asked for my food togo, and left there never to return.

I though it might have been something that didn't happen often. I asked a friend to inspect the soy sauce bottle when he went to go eat there that had never seen the flies in the soy sauce, or maybe never noticed. But once he got there he called me and said he told the lady, stood up and walked out.

I feel bad for her..I'd be willing to go back there if she brought the cleanliness back up to par.

Recommend: Oishi Roll, Godzilla Roll & (Oakland) A's Roll.  Did I mention the Oishi Roll?  Deelicious.

I noticed everyone commenting on the cheap-ness of Hana Sushi and I'm sorry to break the news but the last time I went they raised the prices.  Bummer, but not bad for every once in a while.  Cozy little restaurant and the staff is small so if they're busy you'll notice the lag.

Great place to go for cheap, good sushi. I go here from time to time when I have the craving for some California roll or just you run-of-the-mill beef teriyaki bento box.

The prices are much more reasonable compared to other small Japanese restaurants that I go to. In fact, whenever I go to a restaurant that's just like Hana Sushi, I compare the two by the quality of the California roll and the price. Hana Sushi has by far the cheapest California rolls I've come across at $1.49 and with 8 pieces.

Sometimes when it's busy it's tough to get a decent service, since usually one lady acts as both the server AND the cashier, so you have to get her attention if it's somewhat busy. I've seen an older woman work there too but not recently.

This is a great place to go for lunch too, since it's fast, cheap, and good.

I used to come here a lot, but I started to realize, why am I paying almost the same price for mediocre sushi?

This place has huge rolls at comparable prices to nearby sushi places... but the different is the quality of fish that they use... and the rolls are huge because there is a THICK layer of rice...

BUT its a bargain for your buck so if you're hungry come here. It won't disappoint you too much... but after a while you just get sick of this place.

Their bento's are a great price and the chicken teriyaki is good.

Its a very casual place and you'll often find people with platters and platters of sushi in front of them just eating and eating... wow.

and a good thing about this place is they don't close between lunch and dinner so if you're hungry and want sushi come here.

If you're into sushi gluttony like me, this is an excellent spot. Cheap and good sushi.

This is however not the spot for a date. It's kinda ghetto and low key. I go here just with my buddies when we want to grub on some sushi.

Now if you do want a date spot, Sushi O Sushi next door is just the right place.

Oh Hani Maki, how I love thee.

I love California Rolls. I am pretty much a California Roll Freak. So when you see an order for only 1.49, youre in heaven. They are really good too! A lot bigger then other sushi places, sometimes I like to shove the whole piece in my mouth and with this place I cant do that. The Inari is also really good too. yum. Kinda small, like its cut in half, and I could do without the black seeds they put on it, but still yummy.

And I always get a side order of rice (I'm also a rice freak) and they never let me down. I'm really picky about my rice, and most sushi places I go to, their side orders of rice pretty much sucks.  It shouldn't matter that they specialize in sushi, if you offer sides of rice it should taste good, and Hani Makis is awesome.

Watch out though, the bad things about this place is there is one lady that works there who is not very nice. But the owner makes up for it because shes 50x nicer. Also, they are really stingy on giving you extra soy sauce. Especially the packets. So if youre ordering to-go, make sure you have your own soy sauce at home.

I love this place! Absolutely nothing negative to say about it here!!!

IN FACT - I once went there, and they gave me my whole $30 order (I was picking up for more than one person, $30 there feeds many more than the usual one person anywhere else) for FREE when I didnt have any cash on hand and my card wouldnt go through. Probably because my boyfriend and I became regulars there!

I eat a LOT of sushi, like almost once a week, and I dont think the quality of the fish here is bad at all. Sure, its not top notch, what what do you expect for the price! C'mon people.

I've always gotten take out, but the staff (well like the 2 people that work there lol) were always sweet-as-pie and gave us water/tea as well as pleasant conversation while we waited for no more than 10 mins.

A bit on the pricey side considering the portions, but overall, worth it.

There party trays are good for feeding a lot of people!

I've found my favorite Japanese fast-food place in the bay area.  The $1.49 California rolls are great and hit the spot very nicely when called upon.  But my go-to favorite is the HDB Bowl.  Yes, I know it's not Japanese.  But just one bite, is an absolute explosion of flavor in your mouth.  The variety of different sashimi as well as tobiko makes for a visually pleasing masterpiece as well.  Take-out?  No problem!  And no drop-off in presentation either (see my user-submitted picture).  And to top it all off, it's less than 10 bucks!  Try finding a dish with that much sashimi for that price anywhere else in the valley.  A must-have whenever I'm in the neighborhood!

Maybe it was just today, but this place seems really short-staffed.  I came in at about 1 PM today, and there was only one woman who seemed to working in the place with a kitchen cook.  I waited forever to get my menu and to get my tea.  The other patrons around me seemed like they were just sitting there, thinking "Where's my food?"  Because the place was short-staffed and the woman was as nice as she could be, I didn't want to be all ill and complain about how slow the service was, but at the same time, I was hoping to be in and out in about 25 minutes, not 45 minutes.  The reason that I still give this place three stars and not two is because the food I ordered (udon + california roll)  tasted good.  But I'm not sure I will come back here because  I just don't like to wait.

One of my favorite sushi restaurants! I love the owner, she is soooo sweet. The prices are soooo affordable. yes, they are short staffed, but it's family owned. I love the Oishi roll and the Poki roll. It's close to home, great for potlucks because they do party trays. Don't eat here if you have no patience!

Cons - do you really want to eat cheap raw fish?

The raw fish has been quite frozen, actually it's safe to eat since it's so frozen...

If you need cheap, good sushi for a party, go here.  I was driving by on my way to an informal party when it occurred to me that sushi = good, so I dropped in to grab a few orders.  And by a few I mean 12.

I didn't want to risk the raw fish since I wasn't sure how soon we would eat it and there were also vegetarians in our midst, so I ended up with 20 pieces of California roll, 18 pieces of avocado & cucumber roll, 12 pieces of Kappa maki, and 12 pieces of vegetable tempura roll.  Even ordering a la carte, in total this only cost $25.  Not bad -- but even better, if you are sensible and order a party tray a day in advance instead of impulse-buying 62 pieces of sushi, you could probably get a lot more here for this price.  (I think the menu said you could get 50 pieces of CA roll for $17, and there were a couple other trays in the $30-$40 range.)

The quality of the maki is more than decent.  Good rice, fresh vegetables, good CA roll (perfect ratio of mayo to krab).  Also, the CA roll are 4 pieces for $1.49.  That's pretty damn cheap for being pretty damn good.

Overall, everything was so much better than a nasty Costco tray, and everything was gone within 15 minutes.  Not bad for impulse sushi.

I have gone to this place on and off for years. But being the sushi whore that I am, recently going back to this place to get some take out and I am not that impressed. Heres the thing,

PROS: its cheap and well its really close to where I live.

CONS: the fish quality is ok. I mean if you have eaten at other sushi places, you'll for sure know that the quality of the fish here isnt fantastic...oh and the service...yeah they need to hire maybe one or two more folks.

however, if you're lame, and you like "california" rolls and things that are cooked...this is a good place.

edit: I just went there for some ikura rolls and they were way better than what I got a couple weeks ago...

I love this little family run sushi place.  I have never eaten there but frequently (at least once a week) go there for take out.  I discovered this place at a party where the host had a large platter from this restaurant.  The prices are the best I've seen.  8 pieces of California Roll is only $1.49.

I also love the spicy tuna roll and many of their own special rolls.  I only get the sushi and haven't tried any of the other offerings of Terriyaki, tempura and noodle dishes but it all looks good.  Although the ambiance leaves much to be desired,  there is no fancy sushi chef making the rolls behind a counter the place is clean and you couldn't ask for friendlier service.

For under $10. I go home with enough sushi for two meals.  This is definitely one of my favs.  It is a little unfair to my cat Gracie who looks longingly at me eating my sushi on the sofa.

If you're looking for VERY GOOD-BEST sushi place, this probably isn't the place to go to.  However, this place has pretty good sushi.  Don't get me wrong, it's not like the sushi here is nasty.  This is highly recommended for those that have empty wallets b/c the prices here are VERY cheap and reasonable.  Compared to other sushi spots, where I'd probably spend about $30 myself, I usually spend about $10-15 here.

Very cheap prices with good sushi.  Definitely not the best, but very good for the price.  If you want good sushi, cross the street and go to Cherry's .. but expect to pay more.

we had a teriyaki chicken plate (looked like boiled chicken with bottled teriyaki sauce over it) TINY portion

spicy and regular cali rolls.- taste was nothing special.

granted im eating CALIFORNIA rolls, but imagine what would've happened if i ate the sashimi. game over.

Hana Maki Sushi (Maki) has been my favorite sushi restaurant since 2000!

5 Reasons to Eat at Maki:

1) Inexpensive: in terms of sushi, they have the lowest prices!  In terms of the typical bento meals, they have very reasonable deals.

2) Good Service: although their service can be quicker and more engaging, I am still satisfied.  The owner and her employees are exceptionally sincere, friendly, and welcoming.

3) Tastes Great:  I'm sure premium restaurants serve higher quality dishes, but I've never complained about Maki's food.

4) Lovely Catering: My wife and I used their food to feed our bridal party on our wedding day when we took wedding photos nearby.  All of us found Maki's presentation and organization satisfying.

5) Big Portions: for what you pay for, you get A LOT.  For example, you can get 100 California rolls for around $30.

This place sucks.  I heard it was cheap/good sushi and then I found out you get what you paid for.  Service blows.  There was no one to greet us and food came out extremely slow!  We just ordered a bento and a roll!  There was no other people around at the time either.  The california rolls should be called mayo rolls because of all the mayo they put in it!  Avoid this places at all costs.  Go to Sushi O Sushi instead.  It is only a few stores over.  A small distance away for WAY better sushi.
