One of the best places to eat on the Big Island! Small cozy restaurant that serves delicious food at reasonable prices. Nothing fancy, just good food.
My favorite is their Turkey sandwich. They use fresh warm chunks of carved turkey, not crappy deli style turkey, and good bread to meat ratio. Mac Nut cream pie is delicious as well.
Perfect spot to eat at after a long hike to Green Sand Beach and rock diving at South Point! Eat there or take the food to go and have a picnic at Black Sand beach just a few miles down the road. -

My two friends and I made a day of hiking the Kilauea 'Iki trail at Volcano. After that, we high-tailed it down to K to go to Punaluu Black Sand Beach and the Punaluu Bake Shop. What we didnt anticipate was that there would barely be any places to eat along the way! We made it to Punaluu Bake Shop with about 5-10 minutes to spare and asked the nice lady behind the counter if there was somewhere close by we could eat at. She recommended Hana Hou, and we couldnt have been happier!
We ate like runaway slaves!!! LOL We had steak w/ mashed potatoes gravy & spinach, grilled cheese sandwich, and a quesadilla that we ate ohana (family) style. OMG, the grilled cheese sandwich we were not prepared for. was so ono, we ordered another one! There was three types of cheese and made with texas size toast. YUMMY!
Definitely stop in if youre in the area! -

This is real hawaiian food. It doesn't get any better than this - so stop - sit down and order anything on the menu and be prepared to enjoy a tasty lunch or dinner made and served to you with Aloha.
On the recommendation of a fellow yelper, we headed south today just to have lunch at Hana Hou. We were not disappointed!
I enjoyed the pulled pork plate lunch and the man devoured his pulled pork sandwich. We both saved room for the macadamia nut cream pie. This is the cream pie to top all cream pies. The queen of cream pies....
The macadamia nut cream pie: Flaky crust, a layer of macadamia toffee, a thick layer of macadamia custard, topped with whipped cream and a light sprinkle of macadamia nuts. This is off the hook riduculously good.
The high point? Besides the fabulous food - the service was friendly and warm - ALOHA!
P.S As we were leaving we noticed two tour busses parked across the street at the competition - that tells me that they cater to mass production - Hana Hou is family style and small - no big box here. -

Stopped for lunch as we were driving across the island. Everything was awesome. I had the outrageous grilled cheese. More like a huge super tasty salad piled on top of an open faced grilled cheese. The lemonade was really great, and the carrot cake was HUGE and delicious. Service was very friendly.

Great "outrageous grilled cheese" open faced sandwich with lots of veggies on top! It's so huge it's hard to fit in your mouth! Mac nut pie was rich and delicious!

The macadamia nut cream pie is amazing! Lovely textures, complex enough in flavor to make you think it's simple. Really awesome pie! Nice customer service, lot's of natural light, clean. Other food was only ok, but trust me the pie made up for a whole lot of mediocrity!

If you're driving from Kona to Volcano/Hilo:
1. Make the ~2.5 mile trek to Green Sand Beach to visit an amazing site and build up your appetite.
2. Stop by Hana Hou and get a piece of the Macadamia Nut Cream Pie to-go.
3. Enjoy your piece of pie at Black Sand Beach under the swaying coconut trees.
We didn't order any entrees here (which based on the mixed reviews, seems like a good call), and the Lillikoi (passion fruit) Bar was a tad too sweet, but I'm still willing to give this place 5 stars based on the Mac Nut Pie. After many good meals and desserts on the island, I'm still dreaming of this pie. The whipped cream on top is fresh and airy, the custard is creamy and not too sweet, and the thin layer of caramely-macadamia nut is just perfect. -
Review from Jinny Y.
I ordered the mixed plate lunch special with hamburger curry and chicken katsu. The chicken katsu was nice and crispy and came with a kind of BBQ sauce. The hamburger curry was just okay.
The hubs ordered the fish and chips... Worst fish and chips ever. I don't think you can really call it fish and chips because the fish, although it may be fresh, was just slightly pan fried, not fried "tempura style" as the menu described. Very disappointing.
Our friend ordered the "outrageous grilled cheese sandwich". Definitely the best meal out of the four of us. It was an open faced grilled cheese on wheat, with zucchini, summer squash, a mixed green salad, and other veggies loaded on top, served with lilikoi (passion fruit) vinaigrette.
The dad got roast pork lunch plate. Probably the second best dish we ordered.
For dessert we got a lilikoi cheesecake. It had a macadamia nut shortbread crust. yum! A bit too tart for me, but overall a really good dessert.
Not bad for the Southern most restaurant in the US. ;) -

Best place on the Big Island.
I could not have been happier.
Home cooked meal and top shelf desserts. Great service.
Don't eat anywhere else, just save me a table. -

Lovely, airy and spacious bakery. The menu selection doesn't disappoint, and their food hits the spot. Make sure to stop by. I deducted one star for lack luster service, but don't let that stop you, I'm sure it was just an off day for our waitress.
Make sure to hit up the bathrooms, there's a lovely little Japanese garden on the way back there. -

Let's start backwards. The mac nut pie was delicious! 4 stars for the pie. I had the Korean chicken with rice and Asian slaw because it sounded interesting. The portion was big, but the taste was so-so. The chicken was super sweet and the slaw was not so good. It was a bit soggy. Probably 2 stars for that dish. We also had a pork burrito at our table (I forget the exact name), but that was pretty different and good.
There aren't too many choices in the area. Overall, I'm giving this place a little above 3 stars. Service was very friendly and welcoming, so that's a big plus. -

I love this place. Awesome fish sandwiches, homemade bread, pork burritos, passion-fruit lemonade, and Macadamia nut cream pie to-die-for. Service is a little slow as they are always busy (which should tell you something for the out-of-the-way diner) and they do cook to order. WORTH THE WAIT. Dont miss this one if you make a day trip to Hawaii Volcanos Park from Kona

Hana Hou Bakery - Naalehu, HI , South Point area.
My down south favorite for years.
......that is the place to go ...... home made da kine everything.
(especially for breakfast and dessert)
I wish they would bring the Smoke Meat back on breakfast menu though ..... Oi! .... I miss that (hint hint)
You walk through the neighbor Koi pond area to get to the rest rooms in the back.

Food was fantastic! We had French dip, pastrami, & stuffed papaya. $3 for an iced tea was a bit much though.

The first time we came here we came for dessert and lemonade.
The second time we came for lunch and lemonade.
Lets start out with the fact that their lemonade is pretty much the best lemonade I've ever had. It is sweet and flavorful without being too sweet and quenches your thirst like nothing else!! You cannot go here and not get the lemonade - I'm pretty sure its some sort of crime.. or at least it should be.
The dessert cannot be missed. Just look to your right as you walk in and try to tell me that you don't want one or all of those scrumptious treats that you see waiting for you. I would go through the gross amount of desserts that I've tried in the two times that I've been there, but its a little embarrassing. I'd say you can't go wrong here, so pick your favorite and go with it!
Lunch was fresh and pretty darn good. Its solid is what I'd say for it. Five of us got lunch here and every one of our entrees were quite good. I would say to go for one of their wraps for sure. Just fresh veggies packed with whatever you choose. And then after lunch, in case you haven't gotten the point of this review, get the dessert.
I guess my advice would be to come hungry here because I'd say its absolutely necessary to get the LEMONADE, lunch, AND dessert. If you have to cut one out, I suppose you could go without lunch ... but I'd still say that's a mistake! -

We stopped here on our way from Kona to Volcano National Park and this place hit the spot!!
I ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon - huge with delicious ingredients...I couldn't even finish half. The lemonade was everything I expected from the reviews - definitely order it! The husband ordered an omlette - standard fare, nothing special.
But the stars of the show were the desserts we got on the way out. Shortbread cookies with toffee - a little dry, but still great (and they threw them in for FREE!!)
Banana bread - just like mom makes
Lillikoi bar - I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I wanted to go back and get another one. The crumble on stop was perfectly soft yet crunchy and the filling was out of this world. I ate half of it cold right away and half of it at room temp later. I preferred it cold, but it was AMAZING either way. GET IT!!!! -

The actual diner food was not that good, we both had the Loco Moco mine with the hamburger and my hubby with the pork. It was kind of dry and uninspiring. However, the desserts.. that is a whole other story. We should have really skipped the meal and went straight in for dessert. We got the German Chocolate Cake a la mode and the Macadamia nut brownie. Excellent dessert selection and the things we tried were delicious! A very nice home made bakery feeling to them.
NO on food but YES on desserts. -
Review from Nick H.
There are not a lot of dining choices in this area of the big island. Hana Hou is a reasonable place to stop, but set your expectations.
I had been hiking all morning and was ravenous, so I ordered one of their giant burgers. All are 1/2 pound patties. The buns are baked in-house. My burger came with cheddar, chillies, salsa and huge wedges of fresh avocado. Sadly, the bun couldn't hold up to all that mess and it practically exploded after my first bite. I ate the rest with a knife and fork. It was just so-so. Unfortunately the patty was overcooked and dry. I think they'd have better luck by forming a thinner, wider patty and cooking it less. You might try asking for yours done medium or medium rare and see what happens.
They've got a bunch of Hawaiian fare as well--including pulled pork and moco loco. They have some delicious looking pies and desserts too. Of course, after my enormous burger (which I couldn't even finish) there was no way I could fit any pie in my belly. -

Only local go to Hana Hou, OR people who can't resist driving 50+ mile for their Macadmia Nut Creme Pie. Our families travel to Hawaii twice a year, with my wife's family, then with my family. So every time we go to Hawaii, we try to find the Best Mac pie. In ten years and all of the Hawaiian Islands, "This Is It' the best Mac Nut Pie ever for us.
Once we walked into the restaurant and saw the "Eat Desert First" sign, my wife asked if they had a Mac Nut Pie. Sure only 3 slices left. So we ordered a slice of pie and loco moco breakfast.
One bite of the pie and we knew this was the real deal. Bottom crust, a layer of chopped mac nut in a sort of pecan pie style, then a mac nut infused chiffon (my guess) topped by whipped creme. So every bite you tasted the mac nuts on your tongue followed by the creme chiffon and whipped creme chaser. I wanted a whole pie to go, but they only had 1 slice left. So we went on to Hilo. On our return trip Hana Hou had a freshly made pie that I ordered ready. We ate the pie all week, can't wait to return for another. -

Best macadamia nut creme pie. Get a slice and some lemonade. I dare you to stop at just one slice! (Lemonade was yummy and with free refills. Good thing they had nice bathrooms to use before the 60+ miles back to Waikoloa!)

The sign in the front reads "the southernmost restaurant of US" I think it's a pretty neat fact to ponder about.
3 stars for the food.
It's not too shabby for a place in the middle of no where. I had 1/2 lb patty smothered with gravy, fried rice and a salad. My hubby had the beef stew (special of the day) white rice and the salad. Our two friends had the shredded pork, fried rice and mac salad.
My meat was cooked too long and was fairly dry despite all that gravy. My fried rice was delicious because it was cooked with bits of bacon to add to the flavoring. The waitress told us they made the dressing in house and I was excited to try the salad dressings. I had my salad with a side of lilikoi vinaigrette and the sauce was not impressive at all.
The pulled pork was quite flavorful and the mound of gravy was not necessary. In fact, I think it took away all the natural flavors of the pork. My husband was quite happy with his special order of the day, but was hungry enough to try some of my over done patty.
We were too stuffed to order any dessert, but the display of them through the refrigerated case was impressive. They had lilikoi bars, lilikoi crisp, chocolate cake, banana creme pie, banana bread, carrot cake and macadamia nut pie all baked fresh.
I almost forgot the most important part of the review. Their to go boxes and cups are all biodegradable products =) They get an extra star in my books for being so Earth friendly. -

So, after coming back home to CA, I called and asked if they shipped their cookies to CA. They did... but I had to order like 3 dozen for them to make it worthwhile. No problem! I'll eat and share a few!
So... I anxiously waited for my box to arrive... and when it finally did... I tore open a bag to sink my teeth into a delicious oatmeal cookie. Delicious it was not. Taste was almost the same... but instead of being soft and chewy... it was almost rock hard. Seriously. Like I had to use both hands and a lot of pressure to break of a piece hard! I was so sad and disappointed. I had looked forward to sharing these with friends and family since I had raved on and on about them.
Anyways, I called the bakery just to let them know that the cookies were rock hard and that I was sad since I was expecting soft and chewy cookies. I wasn't looking for a refund or anything... I just wanted to let them know for quality control purposes. The lady was so nice that she offered to give us a refund! I was surprised and thanked her profusely.
So... even though the cookies weren't like what I had in Hawaii... I still give them 5 stars for service and effort. I plan on going back in person anyways!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Finally getting around to reviewing the Big Island eateries we tried on our last trip to the islands.
Not sure if Steve S. was writing about the same place, but there was no stage at Hana Hou. Just a down-home type of place, with yummy bakery smells wafting through the dining area while you wait. We stopped in for lunch and were pleasantly surprised! There was a wider selection than I expected, and the local plates had better prices. I tried the roast pork plate--ono!!! The pork was tender and moist, and the gravy accompaniment complemented rather than overpowered. Husband had the Hogzilla--a wet burrito stuffed full of roast pork, beans and rice with a rich red sauce. I normally don't go for wet burritos, but that was great too. We were too stuffed for dessert, which was a shame, because the pies in their bakery case looked super fresh and delicious.
The cheerful lady who was our server kept everything running smoothly, warmly greeting locals and visitors alike. A hui hou, Hana Hou Bakery and Restaurant! -

After having a couple mediocre meals coming into Kona, we were delighted to find Hana Hou. Our party of 4 foodies were hesitant due to the overall rating bit we were amazed. Great home made dishes combining local Hawaiian cuisine with their own twist. Nothing fancy just solid local and fresh ingredients. Killer breakfasts - thing country/Hawaiian. Dinner was the surprise...some of the best crab cake ever. Large portions. Great friendly staff. Gotta try this.

The southern-most restaurant in the United States, Hana Hou Bakery offers fresh ingredients at reasonable prices.
We stopped for lunch on our way from Kilauea to Kona. We had a vegetarian wrap and a cheese and avocado sandwich. The sandwich is served on their own fresh baked bread. Portions were generous.
We bought a couple of brownies on our way out to snack on. They were so rich and tasty that they lasted several days. -

I think I had a loco moco here and it was passable, but what really stood out was that the woman running the place (owner?) was not friendly, not happy, and seemed to be more bothered by us than anything. The indifference seemed to show in everything, the food, the price, the decor.

We stopped in for coffee and a cookie on our way to Volcano - I thought I would add it to my list as I wanted to stay but we were running out of time, and I wanted to add it to my map!
A nice gentleman was playing guitar and singing Hawaiian music. The pies looked amazing and the atmosphere was relaxed. It touts itself as the southern-most restaurant in the United States. -

My Husband and I just got back from a trip to the Big Island and cannot stop talking about this place! We had the best burgers ever here! They were huge and so delicious neither of us could stop eating them. Fresh ingredients and the bun it is put on is simply amazing. Pair their burgers with one of their chocolate dipped coconut macaroons and you will be in pure heaven.
The service was great as well! -

The food was really amazing ... We had a party of 13 and everyone's needs were met! The pie was great, too, and the nine if us that tried the lemonade really enjoyed it! We arrived at closing and were rushed a bit by the wait staff .. But other than that, we recommend!

The pie here is amazing! I had the macadamian cream pie and my husband had the coconut cream pie. Both were beyond incredible.
The food here is good, too. My husband had the "Bleu Moo" burger, and it was delicious. I had a pulled pork plate lunch; it was good but not great.
Definitely recommend the pie - we are still talking about how great it was. -

It's the southernmost restaurant in the US and the guidebooks say the best in the area, which frankly doesn't mean much, but it's good enough as a lunch stop. The fried pork smothered in roast beef gravy is as good (healthy!) as it sounds. Do not get the Outrageous Grilled Cheese - it's just a salad thrown on top of an ok grilled cheese and the taste combo is just weird.

A little disappointed after reading good Yelp reviews and a recommendation from the Hawaii Revealed book. We stopped here as a quick pit stop on our way to the volcano. Husband got a coconut macaroon and I a Mac nut brownie. Both were disappointing, especially after the hype. Macaroon was a big soggy and the brownie was cold, hard and gritty, tasting like it had been the cold case for a few days. Blech. Wish we would have stopped at the Punaluu Bakery instead!

Terrible place. Paid a visit thanks to my Hawaii guid book. We waited about an hour for our food (grilled cheese, soup, and fish sandwich). Never were told sorry for the delay and weren't checked in on all meal. The food was not good at all either. This was our worst dining experience in our two weeks in Hawaii. Don't waste your time.

I was nauseated and cranky with a migraine, but we needed food. They have some basic things on the menu other than plate lunches. I had a lovely half of an egg salad sandwich which stayed down (TMI) and great lemonade. The service is friendly, the decor is quite island like without the fripperies which made me happy. The desserts looked delish as well. It seems to be a place that is frequented by locals as well as the tourist set -- noted by the bad burns and white tennis shoes.
