Review from Sara R.
This is a solid little deli/grocery with LOTS to choose from in the healthy/organic/vegetarian/vegan realm. (read into that: more expensive too.) Additionally there's a deli counter serving up predominantly non-veg/vegan but creatively interesting sandwich fare with names to match (or at least ponder - read other reviews for samples!)
Outside there are two large wooden benches flanked by shrubs that (thus far) have welcomed me regardless of whether I've purchased anything. Love you too, Hana! -

Mobile, AL
Williamsburg's most expensive grocery store and first stop for impromptu after-hours grub. I can't remember whether it's Sunac or Hana which is 100% organic, but let's assume that both are since this is Williamsburg.
If you're here late, you should expect two things. One is a reminder of what makes New York so great, that in the "City that Never Sleeps," some institutions really do live up to that maxim. Hana's night staff even crushes their day staff for swiftness and quality. They have to. Because the second thing you should expect if you're here late are awful standing lines. Since you're hammered, and since most of the other patrons will be too, the lines do tend to fly by, and you can joke amongst each other about which sandwiches with names so quirky and good, I'm struggling to single out just one. (I think one was My Girlfriend is a Whore. What others do you need?)
The vegetarian sandwiches are a credit to what vegetarian sandwiches everywhere can and should be. Even non-veg heads find it hard to tell or care about the difference (guys like me, for example). Some of the sandwiches, veg and un-veg, are so inventive that they seem like the offspring of a rigorous game of grocery aisle Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe -played in the wake of an earthquake.
Finally, there is Peter. He's the register man working the late-shift Sunday through Thursday. He is one of Williamsburg's essential characters. If you're a patron and you're reading this review to hear what others are saying about Hana, then you already know Peter and are probably nodding in agreement for the first time since you began this overly long review. Peter is awesome. He is probably Northside's most famous non-celebrity. Maybe all of Williamsburg's. (Abdalla in 2012!)
If you're in need of a late night grocery store, Sunac is cheaper and stocks basically the same stuff as Hana. If you're in need of a late night deli, disregard Sunac completely. If it's 3am and you're in need of prepared food because your own impaired motor skills won't allow you to assemble a microwaved hot dog or a bowl of cereal, your options are Hana, Kellogg's or Anytime. Since you're probably going to walk past it anyways, go with Hana. It's Organic. I think. -

Hana Food, what are you trying to tell us? I'm just glad to be able to order these sandwiches and not be the regular customer who inspired them.
A measly $10 minimum if you want a Barely Legal, Gay Boy with Dirty Feet and a pack of cigs at any hour delivered straight to your door at any hour.

What. Da. Fuck.
Is what my girlfriend said as I strolled (ok stumbled) home at 4 in the morning with a chicken cutlet sandwich topped with sauteed onions, brie, basil, tomato, and honey mustard. (Apparently a bottle of champagne makes me feel like some sandwich wizard whatever I'm ok with it).
So. Maybe I am a wizard. Or maybe the man who made my masterpiece is but whatever the fuck happened was magic.
Usually when you go into any deli in the middle of the night you're faced with chicken that you pray was made yesterday, but most likely is about a week old which is clear as soon as you bite into the breaded tire. So not the case here. They are so fully stocked with options its mildly ridiculous.
Also my sandwich made it from the 'burg to Midwood and than to work the next day. Just as good next day mind you. That is sandwich sustainability.
It was $9.50. Late night meal/lunch the next day.
That would be a win.
I was going to wait for the last Harry Potter to buy a wand. But clearly one lives inside my drunk mind.
And yes. I did just go there. -

Riddle me this... with sandwich names like "My Girlfriend's a Whore", "Try Me Beeyotch", "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Love Me Tender", how can you really go wrong??
It's late late in willyB and I just left Sapporo for dindin, No Name bar, Huckleberry Bar and the illustrious Night of Joy. So it's definitely definitely time for a good sandwich. This place hit the spot juuuust right! -

I don't live in billyburg, but I am willing to travel for a really delicious sandwich, especially when it's big enough to count for lunch and dinner.
Enough has been said about their sandwiches. All I can say is the last time I got a "Long Sideburns" and it was awesome. -

This review is mainly for the deli counter.
Hana is a full-service convenience store right over the subway. Prices are slightly inflated over similar stores but c'mon, they have to pay the rent on that location.
I'm a regular sandwich purchaser from the deli counter but I have to write this review because I have just tasted sandwich magic: prosciutto, sliced chicken, fresh mozzarella, basil, avocado, sprouts in a wrap. I'm eating it in the park on a sunny day and it's making my eyes roll back. -

The unstoppable grind of Bushwick gentrification continues with the opening of Hana. This is a great thing. Before this place, the closest place I could find grass-fed ground beef was the Whole Paycheck in Union Sq. Now, don't get me wrong, they don't sell meat the way WP sells meat (like, with a big case and large selection), they sell meat more the way a bodega in bizarro world might sell it: limited, prepackaged selection.
Their other stuff, however, is insanely great. Hana, as its name might imply, is owned by Japanese, so much of their products include cool and delicious Japanese goodies. Their produce, too, is impressively fresh and varied. As an alternative to WP, this place is great. It really gets the extra bump from a solid 4 to a medium 5 from its location -- certainly the first store in a race to feed the huppies (hipster yuppies, duh) edamame like Mom used to steam in Great Neck. While not a Whole Paycheck-killer (WP's prices are actually, get this, better than Hana's, but the time saved can be used to work overtime to pay for all this food), Hana has a really impressive selection, is open 24 hours (!), and has a staff of friendly, helpful people; it is, undoubtedly, a C-Town-killer. -

OH MY GOODNESS! I can't believe this place doesn't have more reviews! This place is the best place i've been to for vegetarian style sandwhiches! I was visiting my sister, and she brought me here because I was dying for a bottle of Kombucha, and I picked up a veggie sandwhich with portabella mushrooms with cheddar, and it was so yummmmyyy! Seriously, this little deli needs to move itself to san diego, ca! I can't believe the amount of items they carry- it's almost like a whole foods! They don't have anything like it on the west coast, but if I ever come back to williamsburgh, i'd be more than happy to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here!

Delicious Vegan* Sandwiches, vast array of beverage options, various well-selected specialty snacks.
The ice-cream freezer looks like a drunken hipster pawed through it for the last pint of mocha soy ice cream (likely) leaving it nearly impossible to navigate, but that's really my only complaint. I've never had a bad experience here.
*Some of the sandwiches labeled vegan are actually vegetarian, so watch out if you are strict. -
Review from David B.
Hana,
I love you. You are always there for me; morning, noon, & night (and middle of the night). The service is unbeatable at Hana. Their quirkily named sandwiches and wraps are among some of the best that I have ever tasted, not just in the neighborhood.
The prices are extremely reasonable for both prepared foods, of which there is a deliciously large selection, and for packaged goods. I don't know how they fit all of my favorite items all in the little shop. They really have everything, and if there is something that you don't see, just ask at the front counter - maybe they have it stashed away, if not, they will order it for you.
Hana's Turkey, Egg & Cheddar on a Roll sandwich has saved me many an otherwise hungover morning. At $3.50 for about a pound of sandwich, they win the prize.
If you are looking for a suggestion at the deli counter, go with the "Super Turkey" - I know the ingredients, but honestly, I don't know how they do it.
24 Hours - They take credit cards over $10 and have a large and varied selection of cold beer & juices.
Hana = A+++++++ -

Brooklyn, NY
One of the things I like most about living in Brooklyn is the feeling that just about anyone's wacky, unrelenting vision can be carried out with a little basic business sense. Obsession seems to give way to strangely positive things, when it comes to consumables, and case-in-point is Hana Food, a bodega which acts as a shell for a half vegetarian, to-go sandwich place with the filthiest sandwich titles possible. Some names to grace its menu are "My Girlfriend is a Whore!", "The Drunk Asshole", "My Huge Sideburn", and "Donkey Brains". The dude behind the corner is a mild, adorable, middle-aged asian man, which makes these titles about 20 times more hilarious. He seems to have written the names himself, or at least fully delights in their existence, and he always has a great attitude which is a pleasure to experience.
The sandwiches there have always been talked-up to me, though no one of my friends ever remotely did it justice. They failed to really capture how perfect these things are - warm, ideally proportioned, fresh, and completely loved-over. Someone is in this for their own personal pride and satisfaction, and it shows.
I had to wait until I was desperate to this find out, but you don't have to. I'm here to qualify that their weird cult following is completely justified, and you will be totally shocked by what amazing stuff comes out from behind this little counter. I'm a strong follower of the Shrek sandwich (2 slabs of pressed, fried tofu with avocado, hummus, and spinach). Simple, but way greater than the sum of its parts. Really kind of visionary, as has been my experience with just about everything here. Neither revolutionary nor gourmet, but certainly the best-thought-out and executed deli sandwiches ever, with a dizzying variety. So many that you'll never make it through them all. And, guess what? You can score this loot 24 hours a day. Sweet, right?
I should mention that the selection at the store is way above average in quality and variety, and that their prices are not half bad compared to the relentless gouging that is Sunac. (By the way, screw those people.) The produce is not the strong suit, but if we're talking beer, cereal, food bars, chips, drinks, and other basic goods, then this place pretty much does all one could ever do in the space they've got. They have good taste, picking only the better of the brands and varieties of what they carry, and there is a strong nod to health food without being overpriced. Really, kind of the ideal bodega, the kind that gives them a good name. It is, in fact, the only health-food based bodega where I don't feel screwed over. It just makes me feel like "There, that wasn't so hard, now was it? Why can't more places just do THIS?".
I guess you could say I feel uniquely un-hassled here.
This is easily the best sandwich spot in the area. And it's in a 24 hour grocery. Go figure. Ride on, Hana Food. -

I've never been to Defonte's...so at the moment Hana is my favorite sub shop in Brooklyn. Creative subs with even more creative names (The Beeyotch and Douche Bag sound great but I'm too embarassed to order them in front of the cute hipster girls). Yesterday I whispered my order "One Monkey Ass please"......smoked mozzarella, cajun turkey, pancetta, sundried tomatoes, and ranch dressing on a super fresh roll. Yeah, I'm sad I don't live near here anymore.
They also sell most of their organic items/produce/snacks/groceries for a dollar or so less than Sunac down the street. -
Review from Gary L.
Food - Excellent! It's the best 24 hour deli around the area. They make really great tasting sandwiches here. They carry a pretty good selection of chips, sodas, beers, O.D amount of power bars, and more. I mainly come here for their sandwiches. They make breakfast, wraps, and vegetarian sandwiches. The only small issue I have with Hana is their late night service behind the sandwich counter. From time to time, you'll find yourself on a line while only one dude is making everyone their sandwiches. For a 24 hour deli that has delivery, it's a great place for midnight munchies.
Service - Your usual deli service. You got the guys behind the sandwich counter and the guys behind the register. The guys behind the sandwich counter don't mess up on large orders which is a plus in my book and the dude that's behind the register is a nice guy.
Verdict - If you're from Williamsburg and got the munchies, this is the place to be. But beware of dickhead cops that camp out around Metropolitan Ave. Those pigs sit in their cars scoping out drivers who look like they had a drink or two and if they're high. This place would get 5 stars if the prices were a little cheaper. -

She said "Today I am going to introduce you to my deli" and she did, and it was a transcending experience. Everyone in new york thinks their deli is the best deli, that their deli makes the best sandwiches and every other one is complete shit.
Hana foods might be the best deli in Williamsburg.
That of course is a WILD statement considering i had ONE sandwich from there but it was SO SO good. Not that I care about vegetarian options, but they have about 100000 things on their menu that will appease the most PETA crazed person you know. I highly recommend the philly cheese steak which they make fresh with chopped peppers and onions. So so excellent. Don't forget to grab some chips from their wall of deliciousness with every organic variety you can imagine.
Yummmm. -

Tweener: (twE-nur) noun. a player who has some but not all of the necessary characteristics for each of two or more positions (as in football or basketball)
Hana food defines themselves as a grocery store. I say that they're a bodega. Merriam-Webster may define them as a tweener. Hana food straddles that fine line between the two entities. They are a small store open 24 hours a day where one can by beer, cigarettes, and condoms. Bodega, right? They also have a produce section but it doesn't have much there and the quality is suspect. Sounds like Key Food, doesn't it? They have food items you may not find at your garden variety bodega but the selection sometimes is just as random. You may not find cornstarch or chicken stock. You may find 4 different brands of maple syrup. You may not find chicken, beef, or self-rising flour. You may find 3 types of fish sauces and sesame oils.
If you ask me, what makes Hana Food great isn't their groceries but their potential for great to-go meals. They have a sandwich counter with tons of specialty sandwiches. They ain't cheap but, by and large, they are spectacular. Add a soda and chips (or some of their surprisingly decent buffalo wings) to that, and you've got a great meal that you can eat on the subway. Every few weeks, they introduce new exotic sandwiches with funny names. Like the Kanye West Interupt, the My Big Sideburn, the Try Me Beeotch, the Drunken Asshole, etc. My current favorite is the Black Panther which has ham, roast pork, pepperoni, jack cheese, avocado, basil, onions, and hot sauce on a hero.
Hana Food also boasts to having some of the best breakfast sandwiches ever. The Hungry Man , which has ham, pepperoni, egg, chedar cheese and bacon on a hero is now a staple of my diet. After a surgery that left me confined to my apartment, delivery from Hana was a lifesaver. I tried a new sandwich just about every other day and was never disappointed. Another great thing about Hana is their candy selection. They have a whole section devoted to Canadian and European candy which has Crunchie bars (which are amazing), Double Deckers, Take 5's, Yorkies, and a ton of different artisan chocolates. Hana also has a great selection of craft beers. -1 Star for the domestic beers being more expensive than any other bodega in the neighborhood. What are you, trying to be Sunac? While there may be disagreement on what to classify Hana Food, the quality of their deli is undeniable.Listed in: Bodegas

Culver City, CA
This friendly neighborhood 24 hour organic-laden deli holds the best sandwich counter in all of New York. Hana's menu holds 26 dreamy warm vegetarian combinations partnered with witty names. The proprietor, Omar, is a huge Shrek fan and his love translates into the SHREK (tofu, avocado, spinach, hummus) the FIONA (Eggplant, sprouts, avocado, basil, hummus), the DONKEY (portobella, tomato, avocado, hummus) and the SHREK 2 (tofu, mozzarella, roasted red pepper, and balsamic).
If the counter is not busy, Omar will be happy to cook up whatever you want. At 1:00am last night I learned that if your nice/buzzed/cute-female he might just invite you behind the counter to help him make your perfect sandwich (I made a lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, sprouts, cheddar, and veggie bacon)... its was ridiculously delicious (and a bit overpriced).Listed in: OK Williamsburg, A Vegetarian in Brooklyn, Vegetarian Sandwiches

This was my favorite snack/quick meal when I lived down the street. My favorite sandwich was the Monkey-brains, I originally got it for the name, but quickly realized that it was seriously legit. I've tried the other sandwiches and I find them to be good in their own ways, but as with any meal it depends on what you like to eat, they do a great job making great sandwiches, so check out their menu for what your into and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
For me my first was monkey-brains and it was love at first bite. -

Hana RULES. A health food store that's open 24/7! Between Hana and Sunac, all of my late-night food needs are covered. This place is small and bodega-like, but you can get some really good food and truly interesting snacks (green tea ice cream! instant udon! gummi candy! pocky!) here. With a million 24/7 bodegas, Hana stands out for not being run-of-the-mill.
They even have a nice selection of plants.Listed in: My Old Stomping Grounds…

Dear Hana,
Thank you for delivering beer, cigarettes, and sandwiches to me late night. You were helpful in the support of my laziness, apparently after midnight I turn into a pumpkin and cannot walk to the nearby bodega on my own. My boyfriend and I ordered the american hero and the cuban sandwich, both were really good and seemed fresh. The place is generally reasonable and Im sure I will definitely be using thier services a lot more. So happy I discovered that they deliver...haha. They are also fairly quick.
Once again, Thanks. -

Every time I've been here its been past 3AM and I order the roast beef sammy because its the cheapest thing on the menu at $6.50 and I'm usually too drunk to read the other options or stand still for more than 30 seconds so I just go with what I know.
Never been disappointed. That sandwich rocks. I jump at every opportunity to grace this place with my sloppy presence. -

I just spent and incredible (and by incredible I mean vegan food-filled) weekend in NYC and I am just now starting my many, well deserved, Yelp! reviews. Who wouldn't, right? And, with the many places to review I am starting here - with Hana Food Corp - for two reasons: 1) their vegan deli sandwiches and 2) their variety of healthy, organic, vegan grocery items.
My boyfriend and I were actually headed to Vinnie's Pizza because who doesn't want to start their last day in NYC with vegan pizza, yeah? But he wanted to stop at Hana because he was told they had "outstanding" sandwiches. The plan was, swing by Hana, pick up his meaty sammy, then head to Vinnie's so I could get my vegan pizza fix. Buuuuuut, we never made it to Vinnie's because Hana stole my attention, and fast.
I scanned their ceiling hung chalkboard menu with little hope and with my mind still set on Vinnie's but to my surprise there was a joyous number of vegan sandwiches and pasta salads.
I had the "Show Time" - vegan beef burger, vegan bacon, vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, hummus/Roll ---- it was the perfect size, incredibly filling, and oh so delicious. Each item seemed perfectly placed, the right amount of each for an amazing flavor, and in just two bites I completely forgot about vegan pizza (hey, I've got my Peace O' Pie here anyhow!).
I only had one thing but I kept the take out menu (just in case) and there is a list of 20 vegan/vegetarian sandwiches, and it looks like they have some tasty breakfast items as well.
I couldn't finish this review without mentioning the incredible variety of organic, vegan groceries throughout the store. Oh, and did I mention that it's 24 hours?
I never thought I'd walk into a run of the mill deli faced with so many options for vegans. No question, 5 stars! -

I like this place because they have a variety of sandwiches/wraps on their menu and they'll even let you customize your own!
I also love the creative names of their sandwiches like the Metropolitan Hang Over or the Douche Bag. Another plus is that it is open 24 hours!
One drawback is that the food is pricey, but if you need something quick and healthy, this is your place! -

**Wheelchair access notes: Entrance is ramped, insides are cramped as expected but generally manageable."
Sometimes, you're a dude (well... I'm always a dude... for the foreseeable future.) and it's 3am and you're going through Bro-PMS... which means you want a sandwich, a pint of ice cream, cigarettes, and some other random items.
Sometimes, it's also -432.3 degrees outside with winds out of the northwest ranging just below 93 mph.
Sometimes, you also haven't showered because you've been playing Call of Duty for 45 out of the last 48 hours.
It's during those times, I call on friends in my time of need. That friend being the faceless voice on the other end of the phone number for Hana Food Corp.
Hana is my go to sandwich shop. People may complain that it's expensive, but honestly, the Godfather #1 is worth it. Hell, just reading the names on the menu is worth a $.50 premium. Yes, there is usually a language barrier with the delivery guy who only knows the words "come down, my friend." Apparently, my new fangled call box is completely baffling... BUT... he calls me friend... so I mean who is gonna diss on their new friend for being technologically unsavvy. Maybe if I was a better friend, I'd learn whatever language he speaks.
Sometimes, you're actually out of the house and had a drink or ten... and Kellogg is packed... well Hana is calling your name. There's the mythic sandwich counter available... but the real beauty of this place is when you go in hammered. I mean you'd never think of getting a yogurt and fruit parfait in any other circumstances, but it looks delicious and so you find yourself sitting on the curb scarfing down a variety of organic delights that have absolutely no business being consumed at the same time.
Sometimes, you regret your dietary decisions an hour later.
Sometimes, with Hana... it's just as good the second time.Listed in: Handicapped Accessible…

I believe Hana Food is a 24-hour joint that features organic ingredients on their menu. It seems like their "thing" is sandwiches, but I'm completely not convinced.
My boyfriend is a fan of their Monkey Brains sandwich, which I have no idea what it consists of. I just recall eating something like a buffalo turkey or chicken sandwich... and it was FUNKY. No bueno in my tummy!
Seeing how my boyfriend continues to eat the MB, I'm going to rate two stars because I'm still mad that I had to throw out the rest of my expensive nasty sandwich. So difficult to swallow. -

This place rules. It has a better selection of specialty items than any grocery story I've been to in Brooklyn. They have my favorite Japanese salad dressing. They have a huge variety of sandwiches - and they're fucking tasty! Chips, soups, some produce, snacks, frozen meals, frozen Dr. Praeger veggie burgers even... and, best of all, they DELIVER 24 hours a day!
Also, the cashier gave me a coupon for $2.50 off my next order with them. Werd. -

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week AND they deliver. It's like - I want to love them, I even want to hate them....I'm just kind of stuck dealing with them.
Overpriced. Like, really overpriced.
Ordering delivery can be a nightmare. But, they deliver - so I deal with it. Be prepared to be put on hold several times - for more then several minutes. Be prepared to repeat your order several times and be prepared to wait for awhile for it to show up (I once waited TWO HOURS, seriously). Also be prepared for the order to be completely screwed up. Almost always is (got a bunch of dog food the other day...I had ordered a sandwich, fruit, and beer - still confused).
Still. Sandwiches are great. And everything you didn't feel like walking in the cold during the middle of the night for - they will deliver to you. Points for that. It's convenient and it's not like they have competition, so, yeah, I use Hana all the time. -

i've given this place a ton of money. What I won't give it is 5 stars.
I will say that Hana Food beats hell out of Sunac but customer service sucks. Sometimes they don't even answer the phone. It's great when you are drunk, but when you are sober and ready to lay down nearly 10 dollars for a vegetarian sandwich, it is annoying. I've called and ordered food for pick up, I waited 10 minutes and walked 10 minutes to get there. that's 20 minutes. Do you think it was ready? Hell no. The guy hadn't even started making it and it wasn't crowded. Maybe now that I'm there on the regular, they'll be a little more nice to me.
Late at night when everyone in there is drunk and starving it can be fun to deal with the bitchy sandwich-makers. That's the best way to describe it, bitchy. I've spent over 100 bucks here in one week...It is on the way home and open 24 hours. When you are drunk, you think nothing of laying down 20 bucks for a sandwich that you really could make at home and some fancy corn-syrup free soda.
I will say that Hana Food has all of my favorite snacks and foods in one over-priced space. Pre-cut mangoes, gummy bears, soy jerky, Newman's Own sparking lemonade, brownies, rice krispy treats, gelato, chips, salsa, hummus and waffle cookies. Sometimes there are cute guys or at least guys that think they are cute. Overall Hana Food really is, reluctantly, one of my favorite neighborhood places. -

Yelp, why can't users give half stars??
I think Hana is more deserving of 4.5 stars than 4, but since we must use whole numbers... 4 it is.
Sometimes I go on kicks where I will only eat one thing for every meal, and recently that one thing has been sandwiches. Alas, for me, getting a sandwich is not as easy as going to the local deli or bagel store or whatnot, because I'm one of those nutso vegetarians and usually that translates into a hunk of cheese on bread when I go somewhere conventional to order a sandwich. But then I discovered Hana!
Hana's sandwiches had been talked up to me, but I failed to see what was so extraordinary about a deli sandwich until I tried it myself. Veggie burgers? Portobella? Eggplant? Tofu? Facon?? It was my dream come true! So for the past few weeks, my go-to meal has been a Hana sandwich, and boy are they delicious.
The sandwiches can be a little pricey, but I've never been able to finish the whole thing in one sitting (seriously, once I split one into three meals) so to me the $9-$12 you pay is worth the monstrosity you receive. Their biggest drawback is that sometimes delivery takes FOREVER - seriously it shouldn't take an hour to make two sandwiches and walk five blocks. But other than that, I have nothing bad to say about it, and until my taste buds get sick of sandwiches, it's Hana for me! -

In my particular neck of the woods (East Williamsburg, it exists!) good delivery is hard to find. So damn hard.
Hana meets my lazy day food delivery needs for two reasons:
1. They deliver groceries including beer. Yes those groceries will be Holy Crap Expensive, but paying for convenience is a NYC way of life. You know what I'm talking about. Getting Stacy's Pita snacks and beer delivered to my door is inexplicably rewarding and joyful.
2. The sandwiches are tasty. Not ALL the sandwiches are, but boyfriend and I have found our special favorites through trial and error. (Mr. Compadre!) Choose carefully because it hurts to pay 9 bucks for a bland sandwich your Midwestern vegetarian cousin could have made.
So how come I don't just walk a half block to the bodega on my corner to get all the same stuff for half the price?
I don't know man, sometimes it's raining.
