Korean BBQ
A warning before you come here. If you don't like grungy, almost hole in the wall type restaurants and you feel like you need to hand sanitize everything around you, this is definitely not the restaurant for you.
Located around the Murray Hill LIRR train station, is this gem of a place. Offering great late night eats at great prices. There are ample amounts of food on the menu, and alot to choose from that you aren't sure what you want to eat. I've ordered some meats and mainly seafood BBQ orders when I've come here. The meat is standard for most BBQ places. The seafood is very fresh and they give you a good amount. Good food at a good price and a fun atmosphere.
Parking is a little of a hassle as the neighborhood is a little cramped and alot of people come down to eat or go to the bars in the area. So there are always cars on the small streets looking for parking.
when you walk in, you feel the "street eats" ambiance right away. It is fun and not pretentious at all. every table has a grill for BBQ meat or seafood. Our waiter was so helpful I think I would have panicked if he was not there for me to ask questions. My hubby and I had the clam BBQ for approx. $32.99 and the beef stew with pumpkins for approx. $27?? well.... the clam BBQ was sooooooo great! It was juicy and sweet. You will get a spicy dipping sauce for the clams also. The waiter showed us how to wait for the shell to open, then crack it in half, then bake it some more till done. yummmmm... The pumpkin beef was very good too. Good drinking place.
I don't think it reads Han Shin Pocha anywhere on the sign. This is the second bar from the corner of 149th Place and Roosevelt, and the sign reads "9-0-[Korean lettering]" or 9-0-Tan. I used to go here often then little things like finding the razor clams full of dirt inside started getting to me and I stopped going. They can't take a moment to dunk 'em in water?
This is not a place for dinner. Total bar food, and that means everything is really salty. However, I highly recommend the ganjang sooyook as it is just right. It's thinly sliced cooked pork belly marinated in soy sauce and it is delicious. I totally forgot about this until I attempted to read the first review. If the server doesn't remind you, don't grill in the middle of the pan nor for too long as it is already cooked.
Round tables with a deep hole in the middle for the cement thing holding charcoal. (Sorry don't know what it's called!) I wonder if the business has some sort of insurance for that. Lawsuit waiting to happen. Tangent. Again sorry. Yeah that place is known for watching your clams open in front of your eyes atop a charcoal fire. On a side note, I have a story to share, more like a Missed Encounter post.
For quite some time they had only one bathroom. One night I am waiting to use it and a guy leaves, but as soon as he sees me, he goes back in to put the toilet seat down. I'll never forget it.
If you're reading this, holla. A bowl of jjajangmyun on me.
Their ambience is young, live & fun with graffiti all over the walls, customer are welcome to add their own. The place gets crowded on weekend night, try their seafood pancake, the crust is crisp and the batter tasty. Of all the Seafood Pajun I had over the years, this one definitely stand out.
For first time visitor try either the seafood (a varieties of clams, razor calms chop up scallops) platters, using real charcoal for grilling. Their short ribs Casserole are tender and flavorful.
They recently added a tube connecting device lower from the roof to the ventilation system, can be pull down during grilling, inside air quality does improve somewhat.
There are great deals of Korean establishment near the Murray Hill LIRR station, but Han Shin Pocha is definitely one of the popular one.
I enjoy korean cuisine just as much as the next korean, though Ive never experienced korean dining as I had last night. The basic premise of the cuisine is freshly served seafood that you cook on a hot grill in front of you. The ambience is of that of a young college crowd and its perfect for gatherings with friends. We had the #3 seafood combo platter (which was inclusive of clams, razor clams, oysters, turban and mussels), as well as a pork dish to feed three people. Food was fresh and delicious. A must visit for seafood lovers.
Divey seafood place with the smell of charcoal hanging in the air. Very loud music. You sit on little plastic stools around small tables, good for only four people. Parking is a pain. The food is basically as good as your cooking skills are. They give you the live shellfish and you cook it on the charcoal grill until you think it's done. For me, the food was great =)
What an awesome place this is!! Came here after the Mets torched Houston last night and was really pleased. First off, it is extremely authentic, tucked away in the Murray Hill section in eastern Flushing. Needless to say, we were the only white folk in the whole establishment.. I would also like to point out how incredible the service was. Our waitress took care of everything, she was a real sweetheart. Also note this place uses real live super hot burning charcoal. Doesn't exactly leave you smelling like roses but it's a nice change of pace. Anyway on to the grub, we started off with the Seafood Pajun, which was great. Not greasy and it was really a huge pancake at that. We then continued with the Modeum jogae (assorted clam grill):I'd call this the Korean version of a mixed clam bake, it came with regular clams, razor clams, turban (sea snails), chopped seasoned scallops, chopped clams, and mussels .....i may be missing some stuff as it was after 1 when we finally ate and I wasn't entirely sober. Next we had the gan jang soo yook (soy sauce pork belly) and it was really yummy. Again our waitress did everything for us and it came with a wonderful dipping sauce, as well as lettuce leaves to wrap 'em, whole garlic and jalapenos. Seriously this was quite yummy.....So being that we had already had some KFC - korean fried chicken for u home gamers, and it was nearly 2am that was all we could muster. The food was tasty, the atmosphere even better. I really love that spot over by the Murray Hill LIRR and I will have to revisit on another day......
side note.....as we were paying the bill, two huge raccoons hopped up on the window in the back patio, thank god there was separation cause i really think they wanted some of that pork belly, but still just a trippy end to a great night in queens!!!!!
