Hampton Inn Cambridge is the best choice in Boston for the budget traveler.

I stayed here for three nights in February 2008. The best part about this hotel is--surprising for the price--the amenities. For $129 a night, you get a lot of freebies: parking, hot breakfasts, high-speed internet, use of the "business center" (an Internet-enabled PC and printer). The hotel even puts out free popcorn at night.

The rooms are decent. My king room was a tad small but spacious enough for one person. It was in pretty new condition, as were the common areas. I didn't expect the hotel to have a lot of services but I was pleasantly surprised to find a fitness center, though it has only cardio equipment (no weights or Nautilus). Still, I gladly ran on its treadmills rather than brave the streets of Boston in winter.

You can't beat Hampton Inn Cambridge's location. It's a short drive away from MIT and downtown Boston and only a block away from the T.

I would give Hampton Inn Cambridge 3.5 stars if I could. While it isn't a four-star hotel, it is the best of the budget class.

This is not even up to the standard a typical mediocre Hampton Inn. The front desk staff seemed distracted and overworked. (There was one person on duty even though the hotel was sold out.) Some of the meagre breakfast was inedible. (The crust on the french toast sticks, for example, were unaffected by chewing.)

My biggest complaint is that the entire hotel SMELLS LIKE MOLD! Our room smelled even worse than the hallway.

In-room internet access is wired only which made it difficult for us to use our laptops simultaneously. It is possible to pick up the lobby WiFi on lower floors but it's unreliable.

The location is convenient, though, and the bed was really comfortable. Housekeeping actually respected our Do Not Disturb sign, a rarity anywhere these days!

For the price this is a great value.  My parent's stayed here and reports the rooms were clean, nice and comfortable.  Nothing fancy, but if you want a nice clean place near the T, this is a good bet.
