I made my way to SoHo of all places in search of the Hampton Chutney Company (68 Prince Street).  The place was packed with people and I thought to myself "just another ethnic dish exploited by a bunch of f**king yuppies."  I wouldn't say the selection of dosas is "authentic" but I must give them credit, among the over priced fusion-food options...

I can't speak for authenticity, but the dosas here are dee-lish!  Perfect spot for a quick and reasonably healthy lunch or dinner.  I could eat here everyday and wish it was located about 30 blocks north.  Oh well, at least it's on the UWS (i.e., within range for me) and not tucked away in someplace like SoHo.  Wait, there *is* another Hampton Chutney Co. in SoHo, so all you downtown folk that just cursed me can rejoice and be my friend again.  Whichever dosa you decide on, make sure you get a cardamom iced coffee to wash it down.

being new to this kind of food I'm surprised I like it.

The ingredients are fresh and tasty. nothing too toxic to my sensitive stomach at all.

So there wasn't anyone Indian working here, but the food was still great.  It seems like a nice twist on India Dosa's and Udapam's.  Not oily at all, which was great, but different than traditional south indian food.  Would absolutely go back again, or go if there was one in SF!

Hampton Chutney rocks!  I wish there were more around town besides this location and the first Soho location (not counting the East hampton original).  The fusion dosas are such a great idea, mixing provencal ingredients, terrific curry chicken salad, or any other combo.  I love the arugala, olive, and goat cheese version with the mango chutney.  Only sad part is that they charge extra for another container of chutney.

I haven't tried the daily special curries, but they sound delicious too.  You can also get the sandwich fillings on non-Indian bread.
I don't suggest that you try eating one of these to go.  The dosas can be messy to eat and the bottom can become soggy if you wait too long.

Refreshing iced beverages, cardamom coffee and lassis.

They also bake some tasty treats - cookies, brownies and other desserts.

This place looks like a weird combination of a play date meet up spot and Southern Indian cuisine cafe.  The soups are excellent and the cardamom coffee is a unique beverage I haven't tasted elsewhere.

This review is based  solely on my delivery experiences here. I am a hamburger, pizza, pasta, you name it fried food and I'll love it kinda girl. So when the opportunity presents itself for me to try concoctions that involve veggies of any kind let's just say I'm not too thrilled. Given my small health kick lately, I decided it might be in my best interest to give healthy foods a shot before my metabolism slows and I find myself morbidly obese. I checked out the menu for this place and had no idea what I was getting myself into.. What the hell is a dosa? I decided to try a number five with grilled chicken.. A dosa with grilled chicken, jack cheeses, avocado and spinach. I called up, got it delivered, and before I knew it there was the delivery man at my door with a giant white bag. I opened the bag to find this LOOOONG thing wrapped in tin foil and the thoughts of "Why the hell do I order healthy food, I can already tell by the way this thing looks that it's gonna suckkkk." I couldn't have been more wrong! Turns out a Dosa is what I would describe as a paper thin tortilla, kinda bland, but a perfect pairing for the fresh wonderfully delicious things that Hampton Chutney packs them with. It was yummy and left me completely full and satisfied.  Also, if I might add.. These dosa's come with your choice of chutney..I recommend the Mango with the #5, it's fabulous!

This edition of Hampton Chutney is more spacious, therefore nicer and a preferred, location as compared to the one in Soho. I have also decided that this is hardly Indian food. If anything, it's a form of fusion food that draws on a handful of elements in South Indian cuisine. It is actually a pretty combination, dosas (South Indian crepes, the equivalent of a naan or roti I suppose) with Western fillings instead of masala. I especially enjoyed the portobello mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese filling, though it did make for a rather messy dinner. Their service was incredibly quick, which is always nice when one is famished.

Very yum.
Located among many other UWS options in the 80s I think the Hampton Chutney Co. stands out because it is "ethnic" food; but, won't scare off a first timer.
Great combinations and fillings of the dosas.  My fav is #12 with chicken, goat cheese, spinach and roasted tomatoes.  You can choose from mango, curry, cilanto, or peanut chutney and drinks such as watermelon juice, mango lassi or have a side of spicy pineapple gazpacho.
Also a soup/daal option each day.

I've always been tempted to get a time share in the Hamptons but didn't for one reason - there's nothing I enjoy more on a warm, summer day than a large, spicy, tubular Indian sandwich wrap and I assumed those were unavailable in that area.

But now do I feel stupid!  B/c the Hampton Chutney Company makes such good dosas that they've opened two restaurants in Manhattan - the UWS one looks like a nice, homey, summer town sandwich shop...that just happens to serve the last cuisine you'd expect it to.

I've tried the grilled chicken, spiced potato and spinach dosa and the Masala Deluxe with spiced potato, spinach, jack cheese, and tomato.  You can choose one chutney - I went with mango both times.  These dosas aren't cheap ($10-$12) but it was worth it since it's easily the size of a sandwich and a half (if you're looking for a smaller dosa, try Kati Roll).

The spiced potato was mild for Indian food but it would've been hard to finish if it was more heavily spiced.  I'd say this is the lightest (but filling) Indian meal I've had in a long time.  It was light enough that you could top it off with a chocolate chip cookie for $.99 that is well worth it.

On a slight but perverse tangent, if I was Indian, dosa would be my phallic euphemism of choice - it's a four letter word starting with D, it's imagery fits the bill....in fact, if I was casting an Indian adult flick, I'd name the male actor Masala Dosa and the female actress Mango Chutney.  I apologize in advance if this image jumps in your head next time you're eating dosas and ruins your appetite.

This is one of my standbys. There is so much variety, not just in terms of dosas but also soups and platters and cookies, etc. I love love love the dosas here.

I think this place is great.  True, the dosas are not cheap but I've tried quite a few of them and they were all delicious.  It is really a unique NYC kind of place.

Furthermore, although the dosas are pricey, they are also gigantic and could easily be shared.  Throw in some inventive beverage choices and I think this is a fantastic lunch spot.

Interestingly, one of the few places in my hood that you can just go in, order at a counter, and have a seat by yourself.  I had the grilled chicken with mango chutney sandwich and I reeeeally liked it.  As many have said, it is a little on the pricey-er side, but I think you do get what you pay for.

The service was very friendly and very quick.  The place is spotless and the decor is unique compared to many of the surrounding eateries.  I would definitely go again.

PROTIP: Not that this really concerns me, but they had a pretty legitimate kids menu.  You would think this place wouldn't be too kid friendly, but they has some pretty delicious options for children.

Tasty, but overpriced.  If you haven't been here before, you'll end up getting something unexpected, especially because it's served on paper instead of a plate.  Very odd.  Overall, the food is good, but I won't return because it's not worth the money.

i don't even like the sourdoughish taste of dosas but i love this place. its all about the mango chutney.... oh how i wish they'd open a Boston branch....

and once again I find myself loving Jaime S. for introducing me to more fabulous food, and giving me yet another reason to frequently visit her in NYC.

Hampton Chutney provides simple pleasures - explosive taste yet uncomplicated ingredients. The restaurant is refreshingly simple; the faculties designed to imbue a mix of yoga casual and hippy aesthetic.

The dosas and uttapams are delicious, healthy, and huge. One can pick from five to six varieties of chutney (season depending). I personally like the classic masala dosa, but everyone else in my crew eats westernized dosas filled with avocado, grilled chicken, or tuna. They also make this incredible iced cardamom coffee that would make Starbucks cry itself to sleep.

Hampton Chutney is perfect for a quick bite. It's possibly the best fast food I have ever eaten. There is no table service so it's quite nice for an unpretentious get together or family affair.

The only downfall is that Hampton Chutney has Hampton-inspired prices. An average meal costs $10 - $16.

im so happy hampton chutney moved into my neighborhood. this place primarily serves dosas & uttapam, many of which are filled with more american ingredients that you would typically find at an indian restaurant. theyre really good. though, as the name suggests, the chutney is truly the best part. i usually order a bunch extra. my faves are the mango (so fresh! not what you typically get in an indian restaurant) and the cilantro. right now they have pumpkin chutney for fall and im dying to try it.  the food is a little pricier, (dosas are like $8 - $12) but i find that one dosa is usually enough for two meals so essentially your paying like $5 a meal, which is a great deal.
