i was skeptical to try this bbq joint as i can be pretty picky about bbq.  we were visiting glen rose [to see the dinosaurs! and fossil rim] and, while yelping, found some decent reviews on hammonds.

i couldn't say no to my husband.  we were in small town texas and found a bbq joint that was reviewed well by people who weren't just locals.

first off, the decor is perfect for a bbq joint.  when i am in the mood for bbq, i get a warm feeling when i walk into a place with wooden beams on the ceiling, license plates hammered to the walls, and kitschy knick knacks everywhere.  i feel like i'm at a place that's been around for awhile and housed many wonderful yummy food memories.

our server was super friendly.  and wasn't weird about our two year old pulling some of the knick knacks off of the window sill.  it may have been nice if they were hammered down or glued, though.

we never order baked potatoes when we go to barbecue joints but our server strongly recommended it.  we ordered it as she recommended-  fully loaded with chopped brisket as the meat and OH.  MY.  GOD.  now, we must try every barbecue joint we visit's loaded baked potato con. chopped brisket if they have one.

our server also recommended the ribs.  my husband loved them but i thought that they were a bit on the dry side.  i think this may have something to do with the fact that i am more of a chopped brisket fan unless i am eating my mom's bbq ribs.

oh!  and the coleslaw.  i am not usually a fan of the stuff.  i'll, maybe, eat one or two bites before i am through.  but we ordered it and the green beans instead of our usual potato salad since we already ordered the baked potato.  hammond's coleslaw is PERFECT.  not too wet and very, very fresh.  i like to combine foods to find the perfect bite and a bit of coleslaw and some chopped beef was, indeed, wonderful.

green beans were good and fresh.

the portions are large so our server recommended that my husband and i share a two meat platter.  since we had our son with us, we also ordered the baked potato and it was more than enough.

as we were finishing and looking at the little bits of food left on our plate, my husband said, "it's a sad day for a foodie when you want to eat more because it's just so good but you can't..." and i finished it with, "because you'll probably end up throwing it up all over the place."

    he agreed.

I was in Glen Rose for an evening and had read great things about Hammond's BBQ on Yelp. I decided to give it a try...

Hammond's is located outside the quaint historic Glen Rose city center. It's on the highway bypass that connects the town to other places in the area. Google Maps is WAY off in Hammond's location - it is not out past Fossil Rim Wildlife Preserve.

The restaurant has all of the common Texas knick-knacks found in rural BBQ places - including the uncomfortable picnic tables. I walked in, sat down, and ordered a BBQ plate - brisket, sausage and turkey - and iced tea from the cheerful waitress.

The iced tea was excellent but the sausage was greasy and the brisket flavorful but fat-laden. Shortly after my meal, I had horrible gastrointestinal problems. I mean really bad. Since the only thing I ate that day was BBQ from Hammond's, I presume it was from food that was served to me there (sausage)? The local pharmacy was closed but found some Pepto Bismol at a local gasoline station.

    Can't say I'll return to Hammond's BBQ - EVER.

Woohoo!  Thanks for being the food-highlight of my Glen Rose trip adventure.  Well, maybe I should thank my fellow Yelpers for leading me to Hammond's first!.  After reading all the great reviews, I knew I had to come here and try out the BBQ, and I am so glad that I did!

I ordered sausage and turkey bbq, with Texas toast, french fries and green beans as my sides.  It was so amazing!  The sausage was very soft and flavorful, which tasted perfect in the bbq sauce.  I also had a bit of the brisket, and it shined like a star!  The fried okra reminded me of my grandmother's okra back when I was younger, so it really hit a soft spot for me.  The only thing that I didn't like was that their menu didn't have baked bbq beans.  Other than that, the service was wonderful and the food made my trip out here so much more enjoyable!

    oooohhhh.....I am so full!

Just got home from Hammond's and ouch, my tummy hurts. But in a good way! We have been studying the Texas Monthly and D Magazine Best BBQ spots in Texas. And how else do you recover from St. Patty's Day on Greenville but to eat fatty, salty, BBQ.

So here we are, Sunday morning and I get the bright idea to take a road trip. Now keep in mind, from Uptown (the State and Allen neighborhood to be exact) it takes a good 1 hr and 20 mins to get to Glen Rose. So grab a roadie and hold on tight!

This place is open Sundays and has a decent crowd. The prices are good and the portions are large. I got the small chopped beef sandwich and the bf go the 3 meat plate with ribs, sausage, turkey and two sides. I have to say, after reading some of the review about the ribs in particular I was concerned. But the meat was great! I didn't try the ribs or the turkey but the bf tried both and gobbled them up. I ate my chopped beef and had some sausage bites. YUM! For dessert....cherry cobbler.

This place was great.Great food, great wall art, great service. I'll be back!

Went down to Dinosaur Valley State Park from Dallas. Passed Hammond's on the way to the park. With the great Yelp reviews being validated by the stuffed-to-the-gills parking lot, we chose it as our post-hiking lunch destination.

My sister and I had the rib platter. It came with five huge ribs and one side. The two kids got chicken finger baskets, and my brother-in-law got the two meat dinner.

The food was outstanding. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. The other meals were equally delicious and well portioned. Neither I nor my sister could finish our meals. We left the restaurant with two heaping carryout boxes.

Glen Rose is a nice town, with a lot of attractions. And when you get hungry, stop by Hammond's. You will not leave hungry, and you will enjoy every bite.

Hammond's is a proper small-town BBQ joint with great food and attentive service.

The plates are huge, big enough to split.  The turkey is well smoked and packs more flavour per bite than anything else you'll have that day.  The fries are seasoned perfectly, but skip the onion rings.

There's crazy crap on the walls like license plates and old-timey newspapers, and the tea (and other drinks) are served in mason jars, so there's enough character to keep you entertained, but there's not much wait. If you find yourself in Glen Rose for whatever reason, make sure you eat at Hammond's.  If you're in the area, it's worth the trip.

They do take-out if you so desire, but there's no real reason to sit and relax at the picnic tables inside; the waitresses are cute and take good care of patrons.

    BEWARE - closed on Wednesdays.

While on a day trip out to find some great 'cue, we stumbled on Hammonds. Well, not really, thanks to Yelp. Love the iPhone app!

The barbecue isn't anything special, but the portions are gigantic and the atmosphere is really unique. Some tables are long, communal eating tables and others are set up for groups.

The four of us easily found a table on a busy holiday weekend and were greeted by a busty woman that made us feel like we were sitting in her kitchen. She called us names like "sweetheart" and said words like "git" and "yer." That's my kind of woman!

But seriously, the portions are beyond generous. Kevin and I ordered separate lunch entrees and I regretted it when the food was delivered. We each took home a hefty to-go container.

Don't forget to stop at the gas station nearby and pick up beer, as this place is BYOB.

Right out of bag generic food - literally saw them pouring it out. Cole slaw and potato salad fresh out of the bag.  Cobblers were still in the sysco food tins.   Ribs were very tough .  Sauce waa sickeningly sweet with no heat or spice.  This is NOT Texas BBQ.

All you can eat takes on a whole new meaning in a place like this.

We were looking for a place to eat in Glen Rose and so I pulled up to a farmer loading peaches on a truck in the square and asked where to find some good BBQ, and he mentioned Hammond's.

The restaurant has some really fun decor, including old newspapers with historic events framed on the wall. I got to sit next to "Japan attacks Pearl Harbor". I had a beef plate with fries, cole slaw, and it came with Texas Toast. The price was right and the sauce came in a single serve glass bottle placed on the table. I will be back here, it was a great slice of rural Texas.

If you start out for Glenrose hungry, you will be starving by the time you get there. Truly a Saturday afternoon roadtrip. Part of the magic of Hammonds is just getting there.
I had the brisket plate with okra and potato salad . The brisket had a good flavor and came with a small jar of sauce that was really good. The beef however, was a little tough and probably could have used another half hour in the cooker. The better half had the rib plate and they were great. A couple of pieces of homemade pie and we were on the road.
All in all a fun afternoon, the barbecue was passable,  as good or better easily found in the Fort Worth/Mid Cities area, but a fun run to Glenrose.

The business was busy on Labor Day.  They had a steady of people coming in motor bikes, Porsche, trucks, minivans, etc.  The line was long, but it was moving at very fast pace; which was a good thing!  I think everybody pretty much had the buffet ($11).  They had baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, regular links, hot links, ribs, and briskets.

I personally liked the brisket and the hot links very much.  The sauce was great; it had a little hint of citrus, which I enjoyed.  I was full with 1 serving plate of BBQ, but my friends went back to get seconds on briskets.  They simply melt in your mouth.  Will definitely go back to get more!

Being a barbecue lover and having passed this place on the way to Dinosaur Valley State Park, we just had to try it.  We also read all the reviews here on Yelp before going and I have to say that they all bring something to the table when it comes to this place.
The moment you walk in it smells like a BBQ joint.  Smokey and meaty (be aware that if you buy a shirt or a hat that this smell comes with you....... my hat still smells of it a week later).  There were four of us and we all had slightly different sides with our meals which were decent for the most part.  I had potato salad and onion rings..... The potato salad was just basic and Ok but the onion rings were pretty good.  They had a cornmeal crust on them but the were big and crunchy with a nice ring of onion on the inside.
The mains were pretty good.  I got ribs and chopped brisket.  While the ribs were good, they really seemed a bit basic and did not really stand out as anything special.  The brisket on the other hand was great.  They did a great job with the beef and they make a really good sauce too that goes really well with it.  They do it so well that I actually wonder why they do not do beef ribs too since Texas is supposed to be the BBQ beef capital of the US.
Anyway.  I gave it three stars because they have some good highs (beef and sauce) and they have a few lows but the lows would not be enough to stop me from going again.  If you are in the mood for some decent BBQ and are in the area it's not a bad place to stop.

Hammonds actual BBQ is above average, but it's the sauce that really puts this place over the top.  Served hot at the table, it's difficult to get enough, especially after a couple hours on the Brazos.  The atmosphere was good, exactly what should be expected from a local Texas BBQ, plenty of memorabilia, etc. and the price was very reasonable.
We brought home extra sauce and have already run through it... hope we can convince them to ship us some more

We ordered the ribs. They were ok. A little tough or over cooked. The sides were pretty good and the ambiance is perfect for a bar-b-que place with license plates on the walls and picnic benches for tables. Being a Texan, I've definitely had better bbq, but this will do in a pinch.

Just visited Glen Rose for a wedding and we went to Hammond's the night before. I don't know much about BBQ but I know I can appreciate a good pulled pork sandwich, and theirs was AMAZING. My boyfriend was upset though that they don't serve beef ribs, just pork. Otherwise pretty good.
