We ate there for 4 years until we moved from Hamilton. We heard that it closed then reopened again with different owners. So I only know the previous place and it was excellent then. I can't vouch for it now.

Went there for a Friday lunch and it's CLOSED!
NO explanation on the door.
Went to Toast up the street and had a great lunch. -

Wow. We were very happy to discover this place, based on Yelp reviews. Brunch on Easter was fabulous: eggs Benedict, salmon frittata, excellent sides of roasted potatoes and fresh fruit, and the best baguette and butter. Coffee excellent. Wait staff great.
Unfortunately, this was their last day in business. The current owner had sold the business four months ago, and the new owner ran into some trouble with the City and couldn't proceed with renovations. Too bad. A loss to this lovely community. -

Oh I Loved dinner here! Everything is SO well prepared! We ordered a lot, and everything was fabulous! Perfectly seasoned, too! Husband had the short ribs and could literally cut them with a spoon (don't ask why he tried). The Green Polenta is served with mushrooms and sauteed onions (to perfection) and I think it was red bell pepper... oh my GOD! So good!
The Server was wonderful! She was on her own and the place was packed! She handled it though! Great personality and very on top of things! She knew the food and exactly how to sell it.
I'm going back as soon as I can!
Oh, and the prices seemed really reasonable as well as a good selection of food that could interest a large party.
It's cozy inside, and on the way out I saw that they had patio seating. -
Review from Sascha O.
I had high hopes for this place but they seem to be having MAJOR communication issues between waitresses and kitchen staff.
Went on a Sunday for brunch with http://restaurant.com coupon. The place is really nice and their patio setting was perfect for a sunny warm Sunday. The others that were dining there seemed to be primarily older couples and groups... perhaps church goers?? Dunno.
First off, EXCELLENT baguette and butter!!! Warm and fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside... I could pretty much have that and some fruits and I'd be happy for brunch.
Having said that, we munched away at the bread for a very long time before a blonde waitress came up and finally gave us the menu. I gave her the http://restaurant.com coupon, then we looked at the menu to decide. There were a lot of tempting sounding things, but ultimately we decided on our dishes. A DIFFERENT, brunette waitress comes over and takes our order. We asked for
Me: Tropical smoothie and nutella crepes. Menu said side of fruits and/or potatoes but waitress didn't ask so I figured I'd get a little bit of both.
Husband: Corned Beef Hash with scrambled eggs and potatoes and coffee.
Brother in law: Earl gray tea, nutella crepes and a side of sausages. Asked specifically for fruit and potatoes for the sides that came with crepes.
What we got, and this time back to the blonde waitress:
First round, Me and Bro in law: Strawberry jam crepes, only fruits on the side. We correct her and she takes them back..
Second round,
Me: Nutella crepes, powdered sugar on top. No creme or anything. Just fruits on the side. I guess that's the default when you don't specify?
Brother in law: Nutella crepes, powdered sugar on top, no other garnish, fruits, and a separate plate of potatoes. Separate plate of sausages.
Husband's plate came out fine in one shot.
Oh in the meantime one of the waitresses drop hot coffee onto the back of this poor old lady, and repeatedly apologizes, patting her down and covering her back with towels. (Just how often do you see that happen... especially when the waitresses are older themselves? You'd think they've had at least a few years of practice serving...)
Off to the taste:
Husband's plate: I sampled the corned beef and eggs. Eggs were scrambled great, nice and fluffy. Corned beef was good too but on the greasy side. Potatoes were nicely roasted, and they were nice and smooth textured, not the dry starchy kind.
Brother in law said his sausages were dry and was "not impressed".
The nutella crepes we both had were pretty good, but the crepese were the pan-made kind, not the kind where they would used the crepe spreading T-stick and make it thin and crispy. So these were a bit thick, soft and doughy. I prefer the thin, crispy kinds so these were good but not great IMO.
The smoothie I had was good though.
Overall, the meal was pretty tasty... but the chaos continues.
We get the bill from the brunette waitress. Turns out the blonde waitress cashed the http://restaurant.com coupon without telling her so the first bill came out as a full bill. She takes it back to sort things out, comes back apologetically, and said that to use the coupon we had to spend more than $45 and apparently our bill wasn't. So we offer to order more stuff but apparently once they close the bill, and print it out, they can't modify it?? or something wierd... but anyway, she handled the situation by giving us a $25 gift certificate which we then applied to that bill (so essentially we got what we were supposed to get).
I will totally come back here for the baguette alone, but I feel that the dining experience would've been better ten fold if the waitresses were more skilled and they had better communication between each other and then with the kitchen. At least the waitresses were very, VERY nice and at least they seemed to be trying to please.... but yeah, Lot's of work ahead of you, Hamilton Cafe! -

A trip to Northern Marin on the way to Wine Country or on the way back, should include a stop at the Hamilton Cafe and Wine bar. The owner is a San Francisco institution with roots at Vanessi's, Postrio, and Jelcos.
The menu is superb and priced right and the wine list will satisfy even the snobbiest folks. On a beautiful day the deck is the place to be. -

Novato, CA
I would actually give it 3.5 stars if give the opportunity by Yelp....
Hamilton Cafe and Wine Bar is located on the old Hamilton Army base that is now a fairly hellish cookie cutter development. But luckily the cafe is in the area where all the charming old Spanish style buildings that were built by the army in the 1930's are located, with palm tree lined streets that are actually quite pretty.
The Cafe is comfortable and basic inside, which pretty much also describes the food. Everything we had was good, but nothing was too exciting or particularly interesting. Good spaghetti with large tender meatballs, a nice lamb shank over white beans and greens, and a decent moussaka that needed a lot of salt. The portions were large, and the prices, while not cheap, were pretty standard for the area, with entrees at around $17 to $19. We shared a white chocolate bread pudding for dessert, which was huge and yummy. The deck/ patio area out back looked nice with lots of colorful flowers, and since I'm always looking for places to eat outside, I would come back to eat on the patio and check out the lunch or brunch options. -

El Sobrante, CA
Having had many a working lunch here (office being a mere 10 minutes' walk away), I came away with a feeling that this is a pretty decent place but would never really be a destination for me.
I am not a big fan of sandwiches (I do enjoy them occasionally) and half their "main meal" section of the menu is dedicated to one sandwich or the other and an equally big section to salads.
So there I was, on a sunny lazy midweek afternoon peering over the pasta entrees for something that was more up my alley. My eyes fell on the Spaghetti with tomato sauce, capers, and olives; I ask them to skip the cheese, as usual, and add on a serving of grilled prawns. The grilled prawns were really good and went pretty well with the spaghetti. The tomato sauce with capers and olives was good but Pasta Pomodoro's was better.
My colleagues always rave about the grilled flat iron steak sandwich so I'd would have to recommend it seeing how so many people can not collectively be very off the mark.
On other occasions, I have had the fussili with roasted chicken , the chicken sandwich, the arugula salad (with either grilled chicken or salmon), and the grilled salmon fillet. Nothing about any of the dishes were sub-par (everything I have had so far were pretty good) but nothing called out to me either that made me say "hey, let's go have (somedish) here" or "let me take (someone/anyone) for lunch here".
After all is said and done, it's safe but lacks pizazz. -
Review from Jade R.
It's currently a 3.75, and I'm hoping it will turn into a 4 soon..
Ive come here for lunch and loved it, but after talking to the owner, something tells me that I will HAVE to come back for dinner. The place is very relaxing, with a pretty good selection on the menu, but the specials are available only at night and they change all the time.
The cousine is Croatian... which is a rarety, from my own experience. Southern european/mediterranean, complete with very good music and great service. Some might call the price for lunch kinda steep.. but then again, it is a sit-down restaurant and not a deli, so $10 for a burger with complimentary salad is not outrageous. Definitely have to come here more often.. and take more pictures. -

I've been here several times over the past couple years and never had a bad dinner. The food has always been exceptional for me and the service is good.
The only criticism I have is that the service is a little too attentive and sometimes I feel a bit rushed. They do encourage you to give them feedback when you get the bill.
Desserts are killer - baked daily - A great place to eat!Listed in: Marin Munchies

San Rafael, CA
On a sunny day, Hamilton Cafe is a great place to go and hang out on the back patio under the big umbrellas, among the palm trees and Spanish architecture. I agree with one of the other posters, I'd give this a 3.5 if I could. The food is usually pretty good, but the choices are a bit limited and the service is a little spotty.
Particularly on weekends, I like it for a good brunch spot - to the point, that yes, I will drive there from San Rafael. This area still feels different from the rest of Marin, so there is a bit of a feeling of being transported somewhere else when going here. Also, there is a surprisingly decently little art gallery next door that is free to the public and frequently has interesting events. -

Novato, CA
First off, I've got to say I am biased in that I want this restaurant to do well. They are the first restaurant to open up in this neighborhood since the redevelopment, and could be the anchor for this area becoming more than a bedroom community, which is really all Hamilton is. How about someone opens a nice neighborhood store near the cafe? Seems like a sure thing to me, but what do I know?
Anyway, on to the review- The Hamilton Cafe is a small restaurant with probably about 10 tables inside and an equal number outside on the deck. Food is good and they've got a pretty good wine list, but no liquor. They also offer take out and you can't beat their cheeseburger which comes with a salad and fries for like 8 or 9 bucks (you'd be hard pressed to find a better burger). The deck is a great place to go for brunch and they are happy to accomodate large groups. -

Second time dining at the Hamilton Cafe, and both times very enjoyable. Compared to other Marin restaurants serving equal quality food, the Hamilton Cafe is downright affordable. And, it has two of my favorite desserts: bread pudding and fruit crisp!
We will be back. -

The first time we tried to visit Hamilton Cafe, we had just moved to Novato. I saw the Yelp reviews and wanted to go. But I did not print out a map. It's Novato. How hard could it be? It was a dark and rainy night. We could not find it, and ending up at Toast.
We tried again. It was great. Lots of choices on the menu. The pastas are good, lamb is too. Good service. The restaurant is pleasant inside, and you can eat outside on a nice patio in good weather. A real winner in a town without too many options. Probably not a great choice for a date--it's mellow without being romantic. -

Marin, CA
Hamilton Cafe is tucked away back in the old air base. It's inside what was probably an officer's club in a very nondescript building with a fading awning.
Bottom line is that despite the uninviting outside appearance, the food is quite good. I've only been for lunch, but the sandwiches are great and the portions are large. A sandwich, fries, AND salad for around $10.
The coworkers I go with rave about the Sarma special that they have in the beginning of the week. -

San Francisco, CA
I'm very happy to work so close to this place. The burger is fantastic, very juicy, flavorful meat with tiny chopped onions mixed in for a very nice flavor, and a soft and tasty ciabatta bun (and I usually don't like ciabatta buns). I also had a fusili pasta dish with pancetta there that was nice and light but packed a lot of flavor in the creamy tomato-based sauce. They always have a nice assortment of specials, and each one I've tried has been very tasty.
The staff is very friendly, especially the owner who is always behind the counter. Good cold Anchor Steam on tap, and the deserts look amazing, though I've never tried them. Great sunny patio for warmer weather too.
In short, a great place to eat, especially if you live or work in walking distance. -

Novato, CA
I have made my rounds in Novato, Marin and beyond... and I keep coming back to this gem in the heart of Hamilton Field. I love the surrounding area and the history of the Hamilton airbase... and the palm trees on the road entering the community. But, the real draw here is the food. As a frequent diner in San Francisco, it is amazing to me to get a quality glass of wine for $6-$8 bucks and an amazing full rack of lamb for $23... really?? This past time in I had a fresh peach salad and my GF had a fig and prosciutto appetizer...both winners... we were having a rough time deciding whether to get the calamari as well - but we knew we wanted to save some room for dessert. The banana chocolate strudel is our go-to and did not disappoint - especially with the vanilla gelato... mm mmm.
At any rate - I have said this before - and I say it again with authority... this is food and service that would stand up tall in the highly competitive market in the city... we are really lucky to have it in Marin.
I deduct the 5th star... because I really wish they were open later than 8:30pm. I know many restaurants are reducing their hours in this economy... but my stomach does not understand!!Listed in: Top Restaurants

We just had a lovely dinner at Hamilton Cafe--after an afternoon of wine tasting, dinner on the deck in the back was a great relaxing way to end the day.
The staff was so friendly and welcoming, the food was solid with lots of salad choices for the vegetarian in our party and the atmosphere was quiet and comfortable -- made even more homey by the marmalade tabby cat wandering around the deck greeting diners. Plenty of good wines by the glass and our Croatian host, Zoran, was kind enough to bring out glasses of Prosek, a Croatian dessert wine for all of us to try.
A good place to stop on the way from Napa/Sonoma back to SF, especially if you're trying to wait out the commute traffic by getting a nice dinner. -

Sausalito, CA
I would have given it a 2 1/2 star if it had been available. The wait staff was 5 star. They made the day. The food was very disappointing. Lamb shanks need more spice. The bed of greens and white beans very good. The rigatoni, which looked great on the menu, was the most disappointing wanted a bottle of red pepper flakes to add some life to this dish. I really wanted this place to be good.
Ending on a good note. I can give one desert 5 stars ..The Bread Pudding was absolutely fantastic!!! -

San Geronimo, CA
Very good workmanlike food, but there is one dish that is outstanding.
If you like calamari, you have to try it here. Sauteed, not fried and served on cannelli (I think) beans with some olives, some kind of green, and the best garlicky sauce.
It is now our favorite calamari ever, and we love calamari.
Have also enjoyed the lamb stew, accompanied by perfectly cooked carrots and broccoli, the lamb shanks, the moussaka, and the stuffed cabbage.
My only wish was that there was a sidewalk from the parking area to the door of the cafe. -

Been here for lunch a few times and have nothing negative to say. Everyone who works here is very nice and there is always a nice mix of people eating here (I love to people watch, my favorites here are the old timers that come have lunch together and drink wine and laugh with twinkly eyes and look like they've been friends for forty years at least.). They have a very decent wine selection as well, I'm always impressed how many options there are to choose from. :)

When I first went here with the parents, I imagined it would be infested with old people - like my parents. I was surprised! There were some little children (grandchildren) there as well! I kid. Hamilton Cafe has the best burger in Marin hands down. The meat is juicy, thick, and well-seasoned. Get it with blue cheese or goat cheese for a $1 more. Comes on a ciabatta roll and a salad and delightful fries. Service is great and friendly. This burger needs to be reviewed and rated the best in Marin already. I'm gonna say something else people might not like....the burger is better than the Zuni burger...there I said it!

This restaurant is a gem in hiding. They serve food that has my husband and I talking every time. I still can't believe they can make portobello mushrooms taste as good as they do. We've asked what their secrets are and have been told that they get all fresh ingredients from the farmer's markets. I believe it. This restaurant is outstanding and I want to make sure more people know about it so that I can keep eating there for decades to come.

It's not much to look at from the outside...but don't let that fool you. The staff are all warm & wonderful. The food is outstanding! We've been (hmm...way too many times) 30 times+ - (?) and keep going back for more. The other nearby restaurants (Boca & Wildfox) don't even come close to the level of consistency and quality that Hamilton Cafe does. We've also had several large parties here...we've even visited for our extended family's Christmas gathering here- and have NEVER been disappointed. Also, the staff always seem to bring just 'something extra'...a dessert, a glass of port, coffee- something on the house. Our favorites: the calamari salad, the vegetarian lasagna, the short ribs, etc.

I really miss The Hammy, as we called it. Unfortunately, it is now closed. It was a worthy "destination spot"...but, unfortunately, not close to anything else. We miss Zorin. Thank you for the incredible moussaka and sarma. I still dream of your rainbow fusilli with chicken, prosciutto and spinach. And the baked brie w/roasted garlic on a baguette w/grapes was the perfect (decadent) starter. Our favorite table in the house? Sitting at the bar with Robin (whoever hires you is very fortunate).

Went to lunch with my Mother-in-Law and husband. My MIL had the stuffed cabbage, don't remember what they called it, She was in heaven. I couldn't decide which salad to have, a lot to choose from. Ended up with the beet salad and added salmon. Great choice. My husband had a hamburger and said it was the best he has ever had. We couldn't resist having desert. Fresh strawberry Pie, Lemon Meringue and a Bread Pudding. So nice to find a place that has home cooked meals and desert. Want to come try your Brunch and Dinner. We'll be back.

This has become a regular for us as we live nearby, but more importantly, it's quiet and they have a lovely outdoor dining area. The indoor area is small but cozy and there is a cute little bar area. The menu is varied enough that you won't be bored and the portions are pretty big. There's a lot of items that you would need to take a nap after you ate!. The surprise is that everything is delicious AND reasonably priced for Marin. I immediately fell in love when I saw they had cabbage rolls. Try them, you won't regret it!

My mother took me to this place on a recent visit and all I can say is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Once you enter into this place you are greeted by the friend wait staff. We chose to eat outside on the patio and the environment that is provided there was great. I had the hamburger, but this was a BURGER. The meat was delicious and perfectly seasoned. Cocktails were the perfect price and you get a lot of excellent food for and excellent price.

Novato, CA
Outdoor seating is nice. Service in the 3 times we have been there has been attentive and courteous. The burgers are quite good and come with both a salad and fries. The salad is as basic as it gets though. Place lettuce on plate, drizzle on some vinaigrette and you are done. Not a big deal though considering you don't have to choose the side. The burgers are on a ciabatta bun and come already sliced in half. This makes it difficult if you order it with avocado or something since that is given to you on the side. This means you have to cut the avocado to fit the already cut burger. I'd rather they just serve it uncut and let the customer decide how to assemble their meal. Prices are reasonable and it is located on an old base. There is a museum next door that may be worth checking out (I haven't been in there yet.)

I work in the area and eat here sometimes. Would I drive a ways to get here if I didn't work nearby? Probably not. Is it the best place to get lunch in the area? Yes, but Hamilton Landing isn't developed yet so that's not saying much. Service is good, specials are good, environment is pleasant.

Been here twice for brunch and loved it both times.
The dinner menu looks promising so I look forward to up-ing this star-rating pending the outcome!
Definitely enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and absence of over-crowded-ness that is so prevalent in most of the bay area.
Very prompt service and oft-overlooked due to its non-corporate personality.

What a cool place! Went here for lunch today and the back porch is beautiful. I have to admit it was 74 degrees without a cloud in the sky, so the weather was helpful to the review. The food was wonderful. I had an almond saffron soup that was mild and unique. A special for the day was a stuffed pepper with mash and green beans. I had it, and it rocked. Beef, pork and rice in a sweet yellow pepper. Everything was cooked to perfection. A little pricey for lunch, but you get what you pay for. The work they have done on the old Hamilton AFB to turn it into an upscale community is impressive. It's worth a trip.

I felt it time to write an update for the Hamilton Cafe after another amazing dinner. Since my last review I have enjoyed many wonderful dinners and lunches, but tonight was the one that brought me back to yelp for another great update.
Zoran greeted my friend and I with his usual warm smile. He is truly a pro at making guests feel welcome and part of his extended family.
We ordered a small meal as we weren't too hungry, but were met with a sample of a new dish that he is working on....turkey meatloaf. It was delicious!! Soon to be another home style classic on his unique menu. One of the reasons that I love this place is because it reminds me of my mothers food. And my mama can cook!
Our salads were crisp and fresh, and dressed perfectly. I love the anchovies on the Cesar salad. I had a taste of my friends flat iron steak, which was accompanied with a forest mushroom ragout....superb. My friend felt the whipped potatoes could have been a little fluffier, I had to agree. I had the calamari...again, and it was grilled perfectly. The nice blend of spinach and white beans were a nice combo of flavors topped with a little aioli.
There was another special that they were serving that I passed on tonight, only because I was craving seafood. They do a roasted artichoke with fresh fava beans that I lose my mind over! I forget how much I love legumes until they are paired with something else that just works.
Another of my favorites is the sarma, which are stuffed cabbage rolls. I have been eating these since I could remember...I'm Polish. I ask them for sour cream on the side. These rolls bring me back to my family dinner table, even when it is actually 2,000 miles away from here.
The service is always warm and friendly. You always hear the waitstaff call people by there names, sign of a lot of repeat customers. They always remember MY name :-)
Desserts are baked fresh all the time and one of my favorites is the chocolate - coconut cream pie.
This restaurant is worth a drive from anywhere in the Bay area. You will find a warm host and staff, great fresh home style food and an interesting reasonably priced wine list.
What can I say...I'm a fan!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We went here for dinner tonight. I have been here before and I usually get the rainbow fusilli with chicken and proscuitto -- the dish never disappoints. The tilapia my brother had was OK but the presentation was quite good with the string beans and rice. My sister's lasagna was served cooler than she liked so she asked them to heat it up. Took a while before her dish came back to the table. When we were done with dinner it took a while for them to ring up our credit card. We found out that they automatically put the tip on the receipt -- something we didn't like since we were disappointed with the service on the lasagna. The tip should be something the customer decides, not the restaurant. If the service is better next time we go, I will up the stars but for now I will keep it at a 3-star rating.

OK. I thought overpriced, and the kid's menu didn't do it for us. Also the portions were too big. I felt sick after eating breakfast there.
