I come here for the Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Fries. The food is really good for the money, the place is very clean and its right next to a Boba Place. YUM!

My boyfriend and I go every friday night and its always good!

Meh. Pretty middling food, though cute atmosphere. Honestly, I was expecting more from a place that is the self-proclaimed "best hamburger joint in LA."

Hubby got the burger, which was dry and flavorless. It came with shredded lettuce, a tomato slice, and it was made fresh (not frozen) - but it lacked any condiments or any flavor. And he didn't like the fact that they used swiss and not cheddar cheese. Overall, run of the mill.

I got the Dipsy Doo which is basically slices of pastrami on a wheat roll. No veggies. Thin pickle slice on the side. Not my thing.

We shared a large fries - these were very good.

For a cheeseburger, the plain pastrami sandwich, a large fries and a drink we paid $17.00... you be the judge if it's worth it.

Best burger in LA, huh?  I must have ordered the wrong cheeseburger, because mine definitely was not.  It was thin, dry, cold, and almost devoid of flavor.  The pastrami sandwiches and corn on the cob were terrible.  The fries and shakes were pretty good, but c'mon, how can you screw up deep-fried potatoes?  Combined with the relatively high prices, I'll take a pass.

I considered giving it only 1 star, but since I didn't end up too sick (my stomach was indeed rumbling, another bad sign) and would not object too much if someone else wanted to go here, I bumped it up to 2.  Barely.

I really wanted to like this place.

I was brought here by my friend T who moved here from Sweden. He's all about all things American so when he saw the sign along the lines of "best burger in Southern CA" he was sold.

The layout is actually kind of neat: 50's diner style in the soda shop standard red and white motif, replete with aluminum accents and servers in white paper hats.

The guy at the counter was an older gentleman with a jolly demeanor and a bombastic voice to match. We placed our orders and were given a playing card as a number. A nice touch.

Sadly, when the food arrived, that was about the end of my happy experience. The burger was decent in size but a tad devoid in flavor. The fries were crisp and tasty, but it's really hard to screw that up. That said, T seemed to enjoy his food.

The thing is, this might be an OK burger, but seeing as my expectations were high due to their boastful sign it was a bit of a let-down.

I left with a quarter of "the best burger in Southern CA" sitting at the bottom of the waste bin.

We kept hearing that this was a great burger place and for natives...were surprised neither of us had tried. Business was slow on Halloween due to the cluster fcuk that West Hoellywood becomes. None the less, we tried the food. It was OK. The pickle was really good.

The food here is always just okay. The burgers aren't even juicy. They say it's so clean, you can eat off the floor. It looks clean, but I probably wouldn't bet on it. You get a lollipop with every order though, and I've found myself addicted to their lollipops. I thought i found it at a mexican candy store. But it turns out they weren't even close to the ones at hambuger habit, and I forgot to read the fine lines too. It turns out, I was sucking on goat milk lollipops (not the ones from hamburger habit, but the ones i found at a candy store). They are also open late.

Great burgers, great attitude and service by the employees.  Really, what more do you need?

Also, I'm told by my roommate who's a vegetarian that they have the best veggie burgers in LA so keep that in mind.

A little pricey for my tastes though.  A cheeseburger and fries today cost me $7.35 - ouch.

Other than the price though the food is delish.

This place is past its prime but I still like it. All of the rave reviews from magazines and radio stations appear to be a couple decades old and they were describing this restaurant's former location. I think it used to be in West Hollywood.

I like the cutesy names for the sandwiches. I think the tuna melt made me sick one time though. It was possible that the multiple cans of Red Bull I drank were responsible for making me sick but I am not sure.

Very solid burger and fries. Not a huge burger, but delicious and made to order. Fries are always crispy and delicious. The real draw are the guys working here, who really act like they were standing there all day just waiting for you to come in and always leave you with a "well see you tomorrow." In this city, that goes a long way.

This place claims to have the best burgers in Los Angeles and their burgers are good...but if this is the "best" LA has to offer I think i'll have to leave town to find a truly awesome burger.

So their burgers are OK maybe slightly better than IN-N-OUT but nothing fantastic and I wouldn't say it's worth the price you pay.  You'll spend a little over $8 for a burger, fries and a drink.

The place has a cute 50's theme going and the guys working there are usually pretty cool.  They use playing cards as your order number and give you a lolipop with every order...but it doesn't make this place spectacular and it doesn't make their burgers spectacular either.

Bias: I like fresh tasting burgers, well done, no dressing/,mayo, and I hate onions. I like my fries soft (or soggy) with plenty of salt.

Good: The patty is large in diameter, but thin. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they listen to your requests (i.e., "well done"). The lettuce and tomato are definitely fresh, you have your choice of cheese (cheddar for me) and the burger is made in front of your eyes. The interior of the place has a cozy 50's aesthetic that doesn't seem forced or gimmicky.

Bad: Parking lot is in a small strip mall and surrounding street parking is not much better. Gave me a kosher pickle on the side, though I prefer it sliced and on my burger.

Conclusion: This was an Ok burger, but the final result was actually a bit bland and as a minor point, the fries lacked salt. This is a bigger burger than In-N-Out, but I still think that Fatburger makes the best burger in L.A.

As a side note, the burgers here were quite similar to another burger chain mostly in south east LA, Tams.

Shoot me, I like this place.  I dig the 50's vibe here.  The staff (who have been there a loooooooooong time) are ALWAYS friendly and they do remember you.  My girl and I are always greeted by name and have never had a problem with our food (and she is picky).  The quality of the food is better than average for a burger joint.  The fries ROCK especially when they are nice and crispy.  The burgers are tall with fresh fixins as they should be.
One reviewer mentioned they were comparable to In n Out.   Uhhhhhhhhh NO!!!!!   Somebody has been smoking the crizzack (crack) again.  I HATE In n Out because EVERY SINGLE TIME I eat there I have a major gut bomb stomach ache immediately after.  No such feeling here at Hamburger Habit.  Been eating here for YEARS and I still will.

The atmosphere alone is worth the price of admission.  A quaint little 50s style dinner that is quoted as "the best hamburger in Southern California".  When you walk in to order, they run it like an old school diner, right down to taking your order on the brown paper plates they serve you.  The burger was definitely amazing, with fresh chuck steak, shredded lettuce, swiss cheese, and a dill pickle on the side.  The fries are really where it's happening as they're golden brown, crunchy and taste delicious dunked in the Heinz ketchup.  Fresh lemonade to top it off and you have an All-American meal.

I remember seeing a hood commercial on TV where the magic box told me that Hamburger Habit had the best burgers in LA. My friend also saw this commercial and we knew we had to go.

Were they the best burgers in LA? No, they were not.

Were they ok? Yes, they were.

Were the fries good? Yes! They were excellent.

Were the optional self-serve yellow banana peppers the hottest effing yellow banana peppers we've ever had in our lives? Hell yes, they were.

Say what you will about the burgers (smaller than I thought, not nearly as flavor filled as I would have liked), but those peppers are hot as balls. If you want to have an exciting night, eat a bunch of those, it'll grow hair on your chest.

I adore the 50's style diner style of the joint. this use to be one of my absolute favorite burger joints while in college. it's very cute very clean with an extensive menu. they have humorous signs signs all about the restaurant and the workers are cool.

I generally hit this spot when I need to feed my carnivore ways. I frickin love the "Archie Bonker"  and "The Habit Forming"... mmm patty melt with swiss cheese, grilled onions and toasted rye).

Also they hand out those mexican caramel lolipops, always a nice treat.

Maybe I'm wrong because I've been going there for years, but I think it deserves 4 stars for a solid fast food alternative.

It's essentially a better Johnny Rockets with less food (and just counter service).

The burgers are solid and the fries are good when asked for well done.

Frank and the gang are very chill. Don't worry, Frank only smiles on occasion. But he's awesome.

with such a funny name this place begs to be tried.  I went in with a couple of people, one of whom claimed he loved hamburger habit (by the end of the meal he was disappointed and mumbled a foodie's familiar lament:  "it better last time").  To be fair, I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with fries since I'd already had a burger for lunch.  The food wasn't too spectacular, but it's quick and not pricey and the place has its charm.  I could be convinced to come in again, I guess.

Oh, and it's cute how they use playing cards for your order numbers

These burgers are not the best burgers I ever have, but we bumped onto the place when we went to Santa Monica to go to the pier and to the huge mall.  Anyways it had the huge sign best burgers reviews by some famous celebrity.  We tried it and ordered the chili burger, but I prefer believe it or not Tommy's original burger.  I think it was because my burger was dried.  I have to give them props for coming up with the idea of fresh orange juice, but it is $4.00 for a large however and had bathroom problems. The fries were okay.  For the price hmm, I rather go to Farmer Boys or In-N-Out.

Every time I go back to LA there's always some corner that looks somehow different, or construction going on some road, or some brand new building that wasn't there months ago.  Things are constantly in flux.  However, one thing that hasn't changed since I can remember is that yellow banner at Hamburger Habit proclaiming it to be the best burger in LA according to KABC radio.  Cracks me up every time.

Anyway, the burgers are fresh and the fries are decent, pretty similar to Johnny Rockets both in food style and 50s-diner ambiance.  Shakes are good too, and there's always a good selection of free weeklies to peruse while I wait.

Man!  You yelpers are a tough crowd!

My friends and I had a fabulous time visiting Hamburger Habit.   Some of us had just gone on a 7 mile bike ride,  and we would accept nothing but greasy food as a reward for our hard workout.

If you're hungry and craving a burger like we were, this place will deliver.  I think we tried 50% of their menu we were so hungry/greedy.  We ordered:

3 large fries
3 "sassy cheese" burgers
2 "lean & mean" steak sandwiches
1 "Charlie's Tuna Melt" sandwich
1"Mikey Mouse Special" grilled cheese sandwich
1 chocolate milkshake
1 apple pie a la mode

Though this was an insane amount of food for just FIVE people,  we gobbled it all up with no qualms.  The counter help was laughing at us as we kept bellying up to the bar to order more.  We thought each item was so good that we might as well try another.

We don't eat like this normally.

I'd say Hamburger Habit is WAY better than Cafe 50's (and it lives up to that name too... old-school, fire-engine red swivel stools and workers with paper hats and white aprons,  et cetera); it's also better priced.  Yeah,  In-N-Out is cheaper still but this is a bit more of a dining experience I think,  and has a more extensive menu.  I like the fries here better than those at In-N-Out,  too.

Anyhoo,  it's worth a try if you're a Westsider hankering for a cheeseburger!

I was dragged here several times by an ex-coworker who I thought was an idiot.  The food was not worth a second trip, yet we kept coming back.

They have a banner up that says that KABC 790 (which is a big radio station in Los Angeles) awarded them best burger in Los Angeles.  I've been here enough times to have tried everything and can say that they easily don't deserve an award for anything!

* The burgers are average burgers.  They aren't horrible, but they also aren't award wining.  They are about the size of the McDonald's Angus burgers, but not as good.
* The fries are thick cut and oily, probably caused by their oil not being hot enough.
* The hot dogs are small and have a crunchy skin.  Some people are all about the "snap" of a hot dog skin.  I am not.  I hate hot dogs that fight me when I'm trying to eat them.
* The shakes aren't thick.  They come pre-made out of a machine, so if there is ice cream in these shakes, it went into the machine and melted.  The shakes are way thicker (and better) at Jack In The Box.

Don't be fooled by the banner, this is just a run-of-the-mill burger place.  Their prices are okay for the portions, but I shouldn't have to keep saying that the food from chain fast food restaurants are better.  Now that my coworker is an ex-coworker, I'm never coming here again.

It's my opinion that it's pretty hard to screw up an average burger while it's quite the challenge to make one absolutely amazing. Though Hamburger Habit doesn't land in the higher end of the spectrum, it ends up where it should be. Dead average.

I'm giving this establishment two stars instead of the average three based solely on the reason of price and expectations. While not as expensive as Apple Pan (and definitely not as good), you'll have better luck going to Big Tomy's down the street and getting yourself a more legitimate meal for a better price.

I had the Sassy Cheese turkey burger with cheddar cheese and I wasn't really impressed. I paid roughly the same price for the same burger at Fatburger but this one wasn't as juicy nor was it very filling. Didn't try the fries otherwise that would have added another $2 and I didn't think an $8 meal was worth it here. I don't think I will be coming back as I think Fatburger is better in price and quality.

Sometimes after a 2 hour+ bike ride all you want is a greasy fat-ass burger. With four famished hungry girls and a plain 'ol hungry boy, burgers were the way to go on a late friday night.

With our hearts set-on Hamburger Habit we were not disappointed. We ordered practically half the menu (see Chelsee H.'s review) and we waddled our way out of the restaurant unbuttoning the buttons that had not already fallen off our pants.

Overall a great way to end our evening. Delicious burgers, tuna melt, grilled cheese, french fries, french fries, french fries, chocolate shake, steak sandwich, apple pie a la mode, and lemon cake. Whew! A great way to treat ourselves from an exhausting day!

Please don't confuse this place with The Habit, another burger joint chain which is actually good!  I've had way better burgers and service before.  The burgers were pretty dry, and the fries were slightly overcooked and they were very stingy with the portion.  Not only that, they couldn't even get our simple order right- we clearly asked for bacon on each and they didn't put it on.  When we told them we wanted the bacon, rather than admit their mistake, they argued and then insisted on charging the extra couple cents instead of just putting it on as complimentary for their screw-up.  To add insult to injury, we also got the hardest, driest bacon I've ever had in my life.  The place also has a distinctly trashy, unclean vibe.  I'll stick with In-N-Out, thanks!

I have to say the place does a great a job in pulling the customer in with its catchy advertisement. However, on the flip side the expectations are really high due to the claims about being the best hamburger in southern california. The burgers were good but nothing great.. I did think the ambience was good (unusual) and the guys were pretty friendly. However, all in all, I would still prefer In'N'out which has better burger at a lower price.

The fries were decent as well.

Cute, kitschy diner style place with really solid food.  The hamburgers are freshly made, with lots of fixings and buns grilled to a nice crunch around the edges, and surprisingly aren't very greasy at all.  I also liked their tasty chili cheese fries--they have great fries that are thick yet nicely crispy.  To sweeten the deal, the food here is really cheap (about $5 for a burger with the works, and a few more bucks for fries) and there's a parking lot right outside.  Definitely not (as they claim) "the best burgers in LA," but a solid alternative to fast food.

So... I grabbed a burger for me and my wife on the way home. My wife took a bite out of hers first and the first thing that came out of her mouth was "This tastes like McDonalds!". Since I got the chili burger, my first bite literally tasted like a cross between a cheap burger and TACO BELL! Yes! is that F%^$ up or what! This place is right DOWN there with the worst places I have ever eaten at!

Pass this dive by and head over to Sunny Grill, Apple Pan or even plain old McDonalds which are right around the corner.

The fries had an odd PLASTIC aftertaste to them that made me a little worried? Maybe they threw the plastic bag in with the fries?

I wanted to try their "Home-made" apple pies, which tasted worse than those mini apple pies you buy from 7-Eleven. It had enough sugar for your whole weeks worth of food. No wonder we have an obesity problem in this country! "Could I have a little pie with your sugar?"

That said, I have to admit the pickles that came with the burger was O.K., and the Root Beer, tasted pretty much like Root Beer!

IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD HAVE. Don't waste your money. It's not worth the $20 in subsidies for the 1/4 pound and the dead cow that had to give it's life! If a cow is going to die for your meal, it better be worth it.

Okay Im gonna say it. This banner has been promoting Elmer Dills "The Best Hamburger" for EONS!!!! My friend and I went there amny years ago and also recently and this place still is bleh. A take off of Johnnie Rockets, this place might appeal to some folks but to have Islands, Tomy's (note spelling), and Fatburger nearby, you need to step it up and this place took a seat in this case.
Parking is a HUGE joke and good luck not getting a ticket cause you made 15 U-turns just trying to get to the parking lot.
I gave this place an extra star only because we need places like this to remind us why we need to to to the other places.

This place is my local mom & pop burger spot that I would recommend.

Although, it is a bit on the oily side, the burger is pretty darn good. So are their fries. When I first moved to LA, my friends and I ended up here a lot.

Not sure, if they still do this, but when I used to go, they would always give you a piece of hard candy after your order. Nothing much but I always thought that was a nice touch and definitely something that most other burger joints wouldn't bother to do.

Solid service.

Also, there are televisions in there to watch.

Good, but not great. Burgers are good, but the shakes leave something to be desired. The chocolate shake tastes like it was a vanilla shake with chocolate syrup added to it, like at Tommy's. But at least Tommy's is cheaper.

The staff at the counter are either charming or abrasive, depending on your mood. I like the hard candies that they give you with your food. It's some strange European candy that suits the meal well.

Probably the best fast-food burger you can get in L.A. I love the "Big Scene" add avocado, and get a side of chili cheese fries. It's a fatburger style of burger. It's a little pricey for a fast-food burger and the 50's style atmosphere is... ughh cheesey?, but other than that it's very delicious.

The verdict: If you're in the mood for Fatburger, come here instead.

Review for their lentil soup:  Pretty spicy and good!  Less than $1.50 I think!  It tastes ALMOST like my momma's daal, man.  Good job over there.  You vegetarians will appreciate it.
They also serve O'douls for under $2/bottle.  Wow.
Some weirdos definitely loiter in the area though, if you don't mind.
