In the weeks leading up to Halloween, a throng of costume shops pop up all over the city. Screw em. Stupid fairweather stores. Why bother with them, when Halloween Adventure Shop (which sounds like it was named by a Japanese cartoon character) is rocking all year 'round.
This place is MASSIVE. It's a block wide, and two floors - filled with everything you could possibly want. And if you don't know what you want, chances are you'll find inspiration here.
Sure the place gets insane around Halloween (but not so much Purim... where my NY Jew Costume freaks at?), but that's just an part of the madness of the festivities that you have to go through. And sure the staffers are weird as hell, and somewhat obnoxious... but it's an epic costume store in the Village! Would you really want it to be any other way? (The answer to that is "no" by the way)

This store is huge! It extends between 2 avenues and has 2 floors. But in spite of all of that space, on the day before Halloween, every square foot was occupied by someone either looking for a costume or standing in line to purchase a costume. In fact, people were lining up on the street just to enter the store. Madness.
All I needed was a simple mask to cover my eyes for a masquerade ball which was surprisingly easy to find amidst the chaos. But in the very long line, I did see some pretty clever costumes, and they offer plenty of elaborate flare for rent like coffins and zombies. If Halloween is your holiday, you have to stop here. Recommend.

This place is huge and has it ALL. Costumes, makeup, magic, party tricks, games, and more... if you're ever in need of something crazy or zany for your get-together (particularly a spooky one), HA has it all. Wander its two floors and find things that you know you shouldn't buy, but can't help it. And if you need help, the jaded but knowledgable staff knows where it's at, literally and figuratively.
SELECTION: Everything you could want. The be-all, end-all of Halloween stores.
SERVICE: A little snarky, but they know their stuff. Don't provoke them.
Be prepared, however, during the Halloween and (to a lesser extent) Christmas season. This place gets SWAMPED right after work. As in, you can't move in or out.
I've come here several times in the past for Halloween costume accessories, and I think I've always found what I needed.
the pricing is not bad, though some things are a bit exorbitant. usually, those are the licensed merchandise, like $65 for a Star Trek officer's shirt...meanwhile, a nearly identical regular shirt of the same color is about $20. not a tough choice.
they have a TON of items for your costume needs. all sales are final though, so make sure that what you buy is what you want.
this place gets exponentially more hectic as Halloween draws near - so go early. their staff are usually helpful albeit a bit odd - I heard one last week yell out "yo, you're not going to an audition, you're going out to party, drink, and get high! don't get too elaborate!". I lol'd.

So I'm a being a troll for Halloween. Which will consist of a nude body suit, elf ears, and spray painted hair. Simple enough right? Well, I bought a M nude body suit, which says size 8-10. I didn't want it to be skin tight so I went a little big. I tear it out of the bag and turns out, the designer of the suit forgot to create A WAY OF PUTTING IT ON. I'm not even kidding, there is literally not way a human being with arms can put on the bodysuit. So I took a pair of scissors and cut a line down from the back of the neck to about mid-back. I slipped in and the suit was SKINTIGHT and hurt my crotch. I'm not trying to brag about my size AT ALL, but a M should NOT be this uncomfortably tight on me.
Then I bust open the rubber elf ears and slip them on. Left ear fits reasonably. Right ear WILL NOT STAY ON. I compare the two ears and they are completely different. The right ear is pretty much poorly made. I might have to TAPE it on. URGH.
I haven't tried the spray paint for my hair yet, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was completely defective, too.
The store is All Sales Final, and most of the items are bagged up so you can't try it or examine it before buying. So I guess that kind of says something about the quality.
I don't want to completely trash this huge mega store for the 2 things that I bought that sucked; but just be warned about the bodysuit and the elf ears.

If you know anything about me, you know I love Halloween. I love costumes, dressing up and any excuses to do so. This is one more reason I love living in San Francisco. Walking into this store in New York City made me think I ascended to heaven. And it made me insanely jealous.
There are a number of good costume stores in San Francisco. But this place is AMAZING. All different styles of costumes, two floors, items ranging from detailed to simple and all reasonably priced for what they are. Nothing has made me more lamentable about being unemployed than not being able too afford to buy some of the wonderful costumes and accessories here.
If you want a costume, and know just what you want, go here. If you don't know what you want and need ideas, go here. Want something scary? Movie themed? Robot like? Monster like? Slutty? Do you want to re-enact the masquerade theme from Labyrinth? Go here.
If you're visiting New York and are anywhere near the area, come here. You'll have a costumegasm.

This is always a fun store to browse though when looking for a costume - from inexpensive Venetian masks to High End full body stuff.
I was looking for something very specific here for the them of being a slave ala bondage, but alas they didn't really have many choices. I was looking along the lines of a leather mask, collar, and chain and bouncing back and forth from the Goth shop down the block I only managed to find a collar for $8 here. A better quality collar more in line with my theme was $40 at the Goth shop.
Nonetheless, the prices are reasonable, the shop is well done - besides the cracked glass storefront along Broadway, it's very well organized for a place that packs a ton of costumes and (large) decorations. If you're someone like me who doesn't want to spend a lot of money on a costume (that you'd probably not wear again) this is a good place to at least get some ideas. -And do so in September to avoid the rush of Halloween.
When you have lofty Halloween ambitions, like, say, making a Medusa wig in a fancy up-do for a Monster Prom, it's good to have a place like HAS.
I went to seven Halloween-themed stores, from Yonkers to Manhattan, looking for small rubber snakes, but everyone decided that rats, bats, & bugs are scarier/Halloweenier than snakes. I was worried I'd have to order them bulk online & be stuck having to explain the 200 leftover rubber snakes at the most inopportune of moments.
HAS had my back though. I scored 50+ snakes, some stretchy & some bendy, for the reasonable price of $0.99 each. Staff was super-helpful but not pushy, & even though the store was busy, it wasn't too crowded or difficult to navigate. Only con was that I had to dig through big buckets of assorted critters to find the snakes, & I wished the creatures could have been organized by kind instead. Regardless, I'll definitely come back here anytime I need anything costume-related!

Popped my head in here to see if they had glasses for my Halloween costume. They had what I was looking for ($7.99) and I was a happy camper, eager to put together my outfit for this year. All sales are final so make sure it's what you want!

I needed a crown of ivy for a toga party. Not only did the first employee I asked know exactly where it was, but she was extremely apologetic that they only had green left, and were out of the gold. (I was only expecting green, but she thought gold would look better on a god such as myself.*)
In addition to having such great service, Halloween Adventure is enormous. I don't think there is a store in the world with a more comprehensive collection of costumes and props. It runs all the way through the block, and they carry everything you could possibly need for theme parties, Halloween, or just general freakiness.
Even though they employ around 15 cashiers during the weeks leading up to Halloween, there are still lines around the block. I would recommend hitting them up at least a month before Halloween if you want a costume. But no one ever thinks about that. It'd be like finishing a paper a week before it's due; we just don't have it in us.
I must admit, I was a bit disturbed by the penholder. When I went to sign my credit card receipt, I was forced to pull a pen out of a tiny gentleman's rear end. I hesitated to reinsert it when I was done. I mean, this pen to his rear end was like a fire hydrant to mine. Traumatizing.
*She told me that. With her eyes, at least.

A costume shop, pure and simple here. No refunds, so beware what you buy... all kinds of plastic and molded costumes, with masks, popular sci-fi/fantasy things, nurse/school girl outfits, police costumes, etc.
A bit expensive for something you'll wear maybe once or twice, but hey, I guess everyone has an itch to be something different.
A couple stories, two entrances, too. Gets very very busy around Halloween... get your costume early. They don't really have sales until after Halloween.

this place is freaking awesome. whenever i feel bored i know i can step into the halloween adventure shop and be taken away to halloween land! WHEEEE!!!
the place has crazy displays and mirrors everywhere so you can hang out and put on some silly halloween stuff and take pictures on your iphone or what have you.
man this place is genious. i duno how they stay in business all year long but BLESS THEM!! I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!
I sometimes go in there just for the hell of it. It's a beautiful store, and I have to slap myself on the wrist there so I don't end up walking out with a sackful of dismembered limbs and an Exorcist girl statue. It's your one-stop shop for pointy ears, fake noses, wigs, and clown shoes. I've taken friends there when they come to visit the city, and they all love it.
I love my new costume. I'm dressing up for Halloween as a Yelp Elite member. I'm going to march into bars wearing my totally cool hoodie, demanding free cocktails and hors d'vers. I won't go anywhere unless it's been reviewed and will proudly display a pin representing the 1,039 "Funny" votes I've received. My diet consists of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Halal Carts, and ethnic foods I can't pronounce. I can STILL look cool wearing shades indoors.
So what do I need Halloween Adventure Shop for? Just an extra large jockstrap. Apparently, Yelp Elite members are incredibly well-endowed.
What a useless review.

This place has to have the best and biggest selection of Halloween costumes and decor. I could wander around in this place for hours and not get bored (and I have done that). I think the employees are really nice and helpful. The place is very well-organized so you don't get lost finding whatever it is that you need.
I do suggest doing your Halloween shopping a month or two in advance because the store (yes, I mean BOTH floors) will be crowded and the line will be dreadful once autumn kicks in.

Okay....first let me give a shout out to the folks that told me "where" to go to look for Halloween props for a photo shoot concept I'm creating, but it was there suggestions that also has super charged my desire to find my Halloween outfit sooner rather than later.
In the Talk area of Yelp, folks were kind enough to give me 2 places to search for snakes, bugs, bats, rats, and other such creepy crawlies.....Abracadabra Superstore AND the Halloween Adventure Shop. Being the fugal shopper than I am and the relative proximity of these locations to each other, I had enough time to check them both out this evening, but Halloween Adventure Shop was the winner - hence the review.
First, Halloween Adventure Shop has a lot more items; though I have to admit that it may feel that way due to the smaller size of the store.....Abracadabra is huge and unfortunately more expensive from the items I priced. Pricing things like rubber snakes and rats, which at Abracadabra were a $1 for the exact same thing was a bit of a turn off and something that made me glad I shopped around and checked out Halloween Adventure Shop (HAS).
Costumes were also much more than as HAS. In addition, HAS as many more "inexpensive" outfits and divided up into nice sections which makes it easy to figure what you want to be on that special night....a pirate...they have a section. Indian - check, Indiana Jones - check. Gladiator - check. Witch, vampire, Freddy K, etc....the list goes on and on. Abracadabra seem to have a lot more "complex/expensive masks and outfits and some truly insane props.
Down stairs is a magic area and more items and folks are CONSTANTLY asking if you have a question or need help throughout the store which was much less at Abracadabra and some didn't even ask me just watched me.
NOTE: You may be inclined to just keep you eyes straight and down, but look up! Items are stacked as high as 10+ feet above you.
They do have a costume rental section and they take credit cards (amazing because they really only get volume once a year, yet bars I frequent weekly only take cash WTF?).
Very close to the Union Station Subways (R/W/6/5/4/L/N....and I'm sure a few more).
So if you are looking to get your freak on....at least from a Halloween perspective, Halloween Adventure Shop is your one stop shop!

Awesome selection of costumes - I agree with Ethan C. - this place is overwhelming!!
I find the staff pretty helpful for the most part. Several of them are more knowledgeable than the others - usually the ones who are the most dressed up tend to be the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
A bit overpriced, but you can find pretty much any costume you want. It's open year round, so it's my go-to stop for other holidays or for theme parties.
Notes: You cannot try on wigs without buying a wig cap, which costs $3.25. Also, there are no returns/exchanges on any items.

One word describes this place: OVERWHELMING!
The people who work here are rude and bossy, but I think they have to be in order to keep some kind of peace in this place. They had every kind of costume you could imagine, except of course the Waldo outfit I was looking for. Oh well. Prices are high, but worth it to find exactly what you're looking for.

Halloween Adventure Shop...
Yelp Elite Event... Bubble Lounge... Mardi Gras Theme... Time to seek out a mask!
Having passed by Halloween Adventures on more than 2 dozen occasions, I frequently wondered what mysterious items that generated spooks and fright laid residence at this establishment. Given that that Yelp Elite Event @ Bubble Lounge were to occur on that same evening, a venture to Halloween Adventure Shop was required in order to gain a certain accessory for the event.
At first arrival, the setting of the establishment consumes each patronage by the illustrious array of spectacles on display. Every Halloween Item or Costume Theme Party accessory is available for purchase. Such items ranging from a 1:1 ratio statue of Batman / Borg Queen / Grim Reaper, Masks of Villainous Horror Movie Characters such as Jason Voorhies, Michael Myers, and Freddy Kruegger, and of course, Mardi Gras masks are displayed throughout the establishment. There is little doubt that the theme party costume or accessory sought after by a consumer can be located at Halloween Adventure. Although the establishment was a bit cluttered (through the massive array of products on display), the walkways were reasonable and allowed consumers to freely roam and appreciate each of the store's items.
Seeking a Mardi Gras mask is often a difficult task. Given the facial structure and preferences of a consumer, the best of masks sought after can at times be the most difficult task. Halloween Adventures' array of masks ranging from Paper Machete to Imported Italian Leather allows emphasizes their product array. Prices for such masks range anywhere from $5.00 to $250.00. After 15 minutes of staring and trying on masks, the sales associate, Oriana, offered insight and product suggestions on what would be most suitable. Despite trying on almost every suggested mask at the establishment, it was deemed that I was unable to locate the mask I sought. Luckily, Oriana had suggested that the same franchise had a second location near Times Square. She proceeded to show me various cell phone pictures of masks taken while at the other location. I was able to locate the two masks for which I sought. Oriana proceeded to contact the other store to inform them of my interest in this purchase. The sales associate (Gabby) at the other Halloween Adventures kept the masks on hold.
Granted... I wasn't able to locate the item sought at this Halloween Adventures, but that doesn't hinder the quality of the customer service rendered. The added effort displayed by Oriana in assisting with my purchase greatly aided the shopping experience. While most other sales associates in other businesses would display lack luster customer service, Oriana exemplified the means of due diligence when it comes to securing the needs of a customer. Needless to say, I shall be returning to Halloween Adventure Shop when Halloween rolls along...

Halloween Adventure Shop has every costume you could think of. You could spend hours in here checking everything out. The staff is really helpful. They're constantly walking around and checking on people, and asking if you need any help. They have a wide variety of wigs, masks, costume make up, etc.
That being said, it's a little pricey. You can find every costume that they sell here online for a cheaper price.
Regardless of that fact, it's a great store. I'd come here to get accessories for a costume, or if I needed a costume in a hurry. If you're on the fence about what costume you want, and you're looking to buy online like me, I'd come here to get a good look at them up close.
I agree with other reviewers as well, good date spot. Fun place to walk around and check stuff out.

I waited an hour and a half outside of Halloween Adventure to buy a white tommy gun to go with my Clyde costume. It made a 'rat-a-tat' sound when you pulled the trigger, and I later threw it away for fear of being detained at JFK.
This place must have easily pulled in $100 K on Halloween night, if not more.
That being said, I found their selection great and the staff, while a bit crazed, were helping others find exactly what they needed to complete their ensemble. If I find myself in NY next year, I'm definitely going to get my costume shopping done a day or two in advance.

What's that you say? You want me to dress up like Speed Racer and wear nothing under my one piece leather riding suit? You dirty little boy you. Yep, they got that costume too.
Wait right here while I go change into my costume. brb.

Note: My review is for a very last minute costume experience at the Halloween Adventure Shop.
I came here about 2 hours before closing on Halloween night. They were about to close for the season and the place looked like a hurricane had came through and ravaged the store. Things were all over the place and last minuters like myself was desperate to grab on to anything. I finally settled on Han Solo and a Star Wars blaster and had to stand in line for about an hour to pay for it. To add insult to injury, I have seen this costume for half the price somewhere else about a month ago in Boston. What could I do? My first costume fell through and I needed something for the night.
Let me be a cautionary tale for you all: Never shop for a halloween costume the evening of!

Tomorrow, I may be sporting a huge bruise on my left hip. No, not because I bought effects makeup at this one-stop super-shop, but because I took a bit of a spill leaving the store through its 4th Avenue exit. (I will admit I was distracted by my friend & the glow-in-the-dark ghouls in the foyer.)
Fun, fun, fun @ this massive emporium of costumes. If you can imagine it, you can probably source it here. It's not cheap, but it is an "Adventure" as their name suggests. As for the "Halloween" part, I'm not sure because I think the store is open year round. (I went tonight for St. Patty's Day items.)
Lots of laughs & amusement even if you go just to browse. (Hello cheap date!)

Never ever come here the day before Halloween or any time during the week of Halloween, ever.
For one, the lines are HUUGE. They run from the front of the store to the back.
Second, sometimes you get reaally bad customer service (depends on who you go to).
Otherwise, there's a really good selection of everything, and the more costumed an employee is, the more eager they are to help. The store is a bit confusing when crowded, though, so beware.
Halloween, has been considered for centuries as one of the most magical nights of the year.
A night of power, when the veil that separates our world from the Otherworld is at its thinnest.
As ubiquitous as Halloween celebrations are throughout the world, few of us know that the true origin of Halloween is a ceremony of honoring our ancestors and the day of the dead. A time when the veils between the worlds were thinner, and so many could "see" the other side of life.
A time in the year when the spiritual and material worlds touched for a moment, and a greater potential exists for magical creation.
tric or treat! happy halloween
I'm spooked easily. I was dragged in this place and I was impressed how spooky it was, but at the same time not frightening.
Halloween Adventure Shop shouldn't be the title.. something along the lines of open all year round, not just for halloween.
They have huge statues of monsters and creepy animals, witches... They also have a section for Hollywood: you can pick up Emmy Awards, Oscars, Tonys.. (fake of course!! hehe)
I love it in here and always make a point to stop in.

I love Halloween, and I love this store! From wigs, to every mask you can think of, passing through costumes, gags, hats, sunglasses, accessories, this place is the ultimate purveyor for your costume party shopping. I love that they divide costumes into sections so that you will find pretty much everything concerning an specific theme in one spot; there's a Roman/Gladiator spot, an Star Wars spot, a Dungeon/Sexy Costume spot (girl's pay attention) etc...
Huge rental repertoire, with costume props gallore; want to dress as Napoleon Bonaparte, an Spanish Conquistador, or a full Knight in Shinning Armor? You'll feel just like in a movie, for $250.00 bucks. Or you can actually buy the props for $1,000.00 USD or less, so you can enact your crazy fetish fantasies, film ur own movie, or any other crazy prank that may strike ur fancy.
The service is also worth the mention; the guys that work there are usually in costume, so guide yourself by the apron they wear (see pic) and by the fact that they carouse the store, yelling out loud "Do not wear the costumes and accessories, or else..." -half in jest, half serious; people do it anyways. One final personal touch is that the owner himself plays around in the store, trying out gags, costumes and just having a good time.
Do check their life sized display mannequins; Frankenstein, Darth Vader and other seasonal characters; you may also stumble with a Yelper or 5, in full star costumes.

A Halloween store that's open all year long? What?! Tell me where it is!!!
I can't recall exactly how I stumbled upon this magical place. Maybe I heard about it through a friend. Maybe I saw an advertisement online. Maybe I did a Google search for costumes in the New York area. Regardless of how I found the Yellow Brick Road, I surely have shuffled my way to Oz plenty of times. Seriously, I love this place!
Aside from being a costume fan - and believe me, there are plenty to choose from in this double-decker superstore - I am so happy to have found a place that sells great theatrical props at prices that don't break my theatrical student budget. I've come here many a time for a pack of fake cigarettes, feather boas, oversized flowers, and the like to use as props for acting class. I've also visited just to browse the impressive selection. It's easy to get lost in your imagination at a place like this. For those hostesses with the mostesses, you can easily find all the trimmings you'd need for any themed party. Now, a fair warning: some of the stuff on stock can be ridiculously priced. But you know, it's the usual $60 for a sexy pirate costume kind of thing that you'd encounter at a place like Ricky's in the late fall. Dig around for a while, and you'll be sure to find something within your budget.
Friendly staff, fun toys, fantastic costumes. See you there!

Since everyone else has covered the awesomeness factor of Halloween Adventure, I have a few points and recommendations to add to the pile:
1) Boy do these guys know how to decorate. Even just walking into the store is an adventure in itself, with all the crazy automated/robotic witches, ghouls, giant heads, and other fun stuff moving and yelling at you when you pass by.
2) The store is delightfully organized by topic and theme. There are separate alcoves for most themes you can think of - pirate, island, nurse, medieval, gangster, pets, BDSM, gag costumes, all kinds of accessories & makeup, movie themes (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter), and other stuff, obviously including popular horror movie prop replicas. There's even a spot in the center of the store for various shoes, though their selection is often narrow and they don't have many sizes.
3) Downstairs there's an awesome rental area in the back with racks and racks of gowns, tuxedos, and more elaborate costumes. It's a little pricey though. And by "a little" I mean "HOLY SHIT NO WAY, I'LL JUST WEAR A SHEET THANK YOU".
4) The staff is tremendously kind and helpful. And fun. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
5) There are TWO entrances to the store. One on 4th Avenue, and one on Broadway. I always forget which is the "front", but I don't think it really matters.
IMPORTANT:
If you want the best selection for your costume, do NOT wait until October to start putting it together. The place is PACKED when even the first whispers of Halloween come around, so start early. The place is open all year long, so take advantage of that and go shopping for costume pieces when they're seeing the least traffic.
Overall it's a bit on the expensive side to purchase a whole costume here. So if you're REALLY looking to save money, I'd recommend getting the essentials here - like a specific mask or prop - and either making the rest (cheapest option, but most labor intensive) or getting something cool and cheap at a thrift or salvation army store and piecing things together so it all meshes. Besides, a home-brewed costume is usually infinitely more cool than a store-bought one.

even if it isn't Halloween or some crazy holiday I'll stop pop into the shop and get that aw struck feeling of amazement of how cool these costumes are. this place practically has everything for every occasion and of course if you're on a budget they'll have something affordable to the high end costumes and masks. i try not to get a costume every year for halloween but i can't help it once i get into this place, there's something new every season.
if you're looking for a really cool costume, props, masks, stage make up, look no further folks.
If you like to take the easy way, this is the place to find your costume. The store is enormous, and there's a classic costume for anyone. They're typical, obviously manufactured [cheapish looking] outfits. Wig selection leaves a little to be desired, but it's quite an expedition less than a week before Halloween to see all the business people and kids scouring the shop.
Some of the employees are irritable around this time, but it's humorous to hear. And they're still helpful, like the guy behind the make-up counter who was really cool & aided us with our zombie-countenance ingredients.

With two floors, this place is huge and have a great costume selection with anything you can think of and more. This place is perfect if your looking for a one-stop shop for all your halloween needs, and I sometimes come here just to waste time and laugh at all the crazy costumes. However, there are some issues with the place. 1) really expensive 2) Rude employees. I was in the store last week, and one of the employees yelled out "Does anyone need any help?" and another employee responded with "Yes, a new job!". Sure, it gets pretty hectic, and it is the East Village, and a halloween store - so it has some leniency, but still not appropriate. 3) on days leaning up to halloween, there is an extremely long line out the door and around corners. It can take an hour or more to get through to the front of the line. 4) you can't try on any costumes under a certain price (not sure the price).

Who wants to play dress-up?
Not only can you spend hours and hours in here, they have a great, comprehensive selection of costumes. The only one they didn't seem to have much of was flapper costumes which I was unfortunately in the market for.
Prices are slightly high if you're looking for complete costumes but this store is great for picking up accessories (which are moderately priced) and piecing the rest together on your own.
Will def bookmark for Halloween.
Great place until i found the Abracadabra Magic store. Don't get me wrong this place is awesome, but things are typically over priced and cheaply made. Also the Employees are usually running around yelling at eachother rather than being helpful.
The magic store on the lower level, although is also pretty expensive, has quality magic effects and a nice staff. This is probably because they hire real magicians with social skills.
I would definatly check this place out, its one of the cooler places in NYC.

Dropped in here for decorations for our annual Halloween party. CRAZY, HUGE selection. The prices were kinda high, but you're paying for things that are hard to find anywhere else. The staff was helpful and it was just plan fun to romp through the costumes and props. Everyone can find something cool that they didn't think they needed here year round.
