This was the best Sausage/Wurst I Have ever eaten. Don't waste your time eating at hot dog stands or Halal stands, they can't touch this guy. Everything from the sausage to the bread to the seasoned onions were delicious. I got the BMW with everything on it and My girlfriend got the Porsche with everything, both were magnificent.

Seriously? THAT is what all the hype was about?!
I must admit that the German dude manning the food cart is worth a good star all by himself. He actually says "hallo!" when you frequent his truck! That, and he's super efficient. Another star for the fact that they have a Stalin wurst, with the desciription being "No choice!" I will gladly give stars for humor.
I ended up getting the Porsche sandwich, which is a beef curry wurst, and it really was "meh" for me at best ; that being said, I'm used to the mind-bending sausage I get at Radegast Beer Hall in Brooklyn, which is beyond this world.
Pretty good value for $6, but I don't think I'll be comin' back.Listed in: So You Work in Midtown...

So glad this cart came back, i thought i'd never get the chance to try it. I went with the Fifth Ave Combo and had the Bratwurst and Knockwust. I really enjoyed the sausages and topping that went with then. I was able to make mini sausage sandwiches with the bread they give you. I also really liked their mustard, and i hate mustard, one of my least favorite foods, but this mustard was just awesome. One complaint with the meal was that everything is mixed together. I couldn't really tell which sausage was which, and the flavors all mixed together. I also could've passed on the german fries, which are basically home fries. They're great for breakfast but i dont really want them with my lunch. I'm gonna try the sausages on a roll next time and skip the fries.

For the fifth time over the last few months, I found myself standing on the east side of 54th and Madison, gazing forlornly across the street and seeing only a NYC hot dog cart. No Lufthansa umbrella, no throng of suit-clad sausage lovers.
"That's it," I thought to myself, whipping out the good ole' BB. "I know he's gone for a month in the summer, and he takes a day off every once in awhile, but this is ridiculous."
I stood on the corner, nose in my BB, and the world went silent when Google turned up this result on Midtown Lunch: Hallo Berlin Cart Owner Rolf Babiel Has Passed Away, dated 10/23/09. He was 57, and died of cancer. RIP, Rolf Babiel.
MLB also mentioned that the cart has been back on several occasions, run by his brother, but I haven't seen it in awhile. Has anyone else?1 Previous Review: Show all »

After hearing about the Vendy's (yearly street cart awards) I've had a desire to make it up to NYC to try out some of the food carts. Some NYC residents were skeptical saying "we eat out of food carts because we have to, not because it's good", but when you travel to other countries, isn't checking out the street food one of the best parts?? So, why not in our country?
Anyway, I finally get to check Hallo Berlin off the list, which I've been wanting to try since I heard about it 2 years ago. Wow was it worth it! The food was just so awesome, and an amazing deal. $11 got me the Triple soul food platter which had 3 sausages (veal, pork, beef) along with sauteed onions, cabbage, potatoes, and a crusty roll. A pretty sizeable amount of food. The guy has 5 or 6 iron skillets going with the onions and potatoes, and sausages. It takes a while to prepare (maybe 2-4 minutes per person?) so if there's a line it's entirely possible to wait over 20 minutes, but it is so worth it. I plowed through that little pile of sausage, toppings, and sauces in no time and the entire experience was pure pleasure. If I worked in the area I'd definitely be here, but it's even worth going out of your way for. -
Review from Larry L.
Hallo! They should have a neon sign that says "Sausages, sausages, sausages."
My co-workers got to the cart a little before noon and there were about 10 people in line ahead of us. The line was moving pretty slow because there was only 1 guy working the cart. I'd say we waited close to 30-40 minutes before our group ordered. When we left (around 12:45) there were about 30 people in line. So word to the wise - go early.
Also, there was only 1 woman in line - everyone else in line was a guy. Ladies, if you are looking for a male suitor, maybe this line would be a good place to mingle. Just a suggestion.
The food here is good. They have different items on the menu, but mainly it's sausages. You can choose "platters" that come with kraut, onions, cabbage, potatoes and some bread. Or you can get your sausage on a roll. I recommend the Churchill.
I really wanted to give them 5 stars but the line kindof knocked it down a half star. -

Service: Slow, prepare to wait in a ridiculous line
Attitude: Gruff German, theses guys don't want to be your friend.
Menu: Convoluted, Most of your options involve Cold War Leaders.
Food: After waiting 45 minutes in line for a street cart, at noon, you're kinda pissed, and at this point thinking there is no way this could be worth it.....but you're wrong...oh it is so worth it.
Lets start with the crusty bread....its awesome and just the right amount of "crustiness" for sopping up all those wonderful juices.
The sauerkraut, well lets put it this way, I don't love sauerkraut, and for the most part only eat the stuff my Polish mother makes, old world recipe, but now I can also add Hallo Berlin kraut to my list of must haves, it has just the right mixture of flavors and literally enhances the sausage experience.
I think I've tried all of their wursts, and while the brat might be my favorite, I usually like to order the triple Soul Food....three different types of wurst, with some German mustard, it really doesn't get much better than that.
Oh and the pickle.....Just get a pickle, you won't regret it.
The only thing that could improve the dining experience at this cart is if they brought a beer truck along and served delicious giant German beers on the same block.Listed in: Recession Special, Street Carts

All the people in line for the Hallo Berlin cart can't be wrong. These sausages and their compliments (potatoes, kraut, etc) are delicious and genuine. Tourists, New Yorkers and German expats alike love this cart, and the brothers who run it are friendly and talkative. This cart isn't your typical speedy hot dog cart though - be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes if you have 4-5 people in front of you.
A great meal that usually gets overshadowed by the sausages themselves is the $5 sausage and soup combo. When the guy has potato leek soup, he'll cut up a sausage for you and mix it in! Most. Satisfying. Meal. Ever. On days that he does not have potato leek soup, there's usually a very delicious and filling chicken goulash.
And it's extra awesome that the guys always ask their customers "For here or to go?" even in the dead of winter. By "for here" they mean the little fold out counter attached to the cart. What service! -
Review from Adam R.
This is the best street cart I've ever been to. I have no reservation giving it the full five stars.
Delicious food, cool guy that serves them, lots of options, your entire meal in a little fry-box looking thing. Oh and did I mention the food is delicious? I've been to fairly expensive restaurants that serve worse stuff than here.
If there's a line, it's worth the wait. If you don't work near the area, it's worth a long lunch. -

Hallo Berlin cart is back in action! I had the amazing Freakin' deal and for an extra $1 I got the cheese brat in it. It comes with potato salad, onion and german meatball with mustart on top and a crusty roll. Amazing and delicious. As noted below, this is not fast food and with missing Rolf, there is only the one guy braving it alone. By 11:45 the line was 10 deep with about 5 minutes prep per person.

I have to give this place 5, because otherwise my German boyfriend will never talk to me again. Seriously. He f'ing loves this place.
In all seriousness, the wursts here are delicious. I have been to the restaurant on 9th avenue, and was really not impressed, however this cart on 5th & 54th is pretty good. I imagine that they put all of the hot dog vendors on break while they are there.
The red cabbage is delicious, german french fries are unreal, and sauerkraut is even good! You really can't go wrong with anything you order here. My only complaint is its a pain in the ass to eat. If you forget to order it in a bowl, they put the wurst and all the toppings in this thick roll, and seriously, its a mess to try and eat. Therefore, I recommend ordering the soul food bowl.
Also remember the hours here. I was mighty disappointed at that German boyfriend when he took me here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch, only to discover that the cart is only here M-F for lunch time. -

It doesn't get much better than this, especially for a cart. I've been to the cart twice so far and planning on going again this week. Everything is great. I think I'm becoming addicted to the wursts, german fries, red cabbage, bread, and basically everything else.
As far as recommendations you can't really go wrong with anything. If you normally get the "soul food" mix I would say try a wursts (on bread w/ sauerkraut, german mustard, etc) with some german fries or cabbage on the side, it's a great combination. The guys running the cart are pretty cool also. My one warning is that as far as I know the carts only there during weekday around lunch hours (check yelp for hours). -

I love these german sausages. I got two Maybachs (that's the name of the sausage sandwich) one time (I barely finished the second one). One was not enough, but two was overkill. Anyway, no complaints here. The grilled sausages were juicy and succulent. It was a bit spicy, but spicy in a very good way. The spice adds another layer to the bite It does not rob away from the wonderful flavors of the grilled sausage & seasoned potatoes. Yum.
The price is fair for NYC. It certainly won't break the bank. Give yourself extra time, because the line can be long around lunch time. If you have exact change, he prefers that.
It's a welcome change to the 10,000 chicken carts all over the city.
PS: this is why I hate writing food reviews, now I'm craving a Maybach :( -

Extra points for naming combo meals after dictators and comparing sausages to cars
Had the dictator special (I think it was Mao) when i was here. The sausages by themselves didn't really fill me up, but the soup of the day (creamy spinach & chicken?) was really delicious. Will come back to try the democracy special or the Porsche or Maybach wurst. -
Review from Ken K.
There were two sausages that were recommended to me at Hallo Berlin, but only one was available when I went. They were out of the Maybach, so I settled for the Mercedes.
The bratwurst was excellent. Full of flavor. And he divided it up with three different toppings: red cabbage, grilled onions and sauerkraut. I couldn't care less for sauerkraut to begin with, but the grilled onions were good (can grilled onions ever be bad?). And the red cabbage? Outstanding! Next time, I'm getting the entire dog covered with that stuff! It was sweet, so it created a nice balance w/ the brat. I forgot to add their homemade mustard per my friend's recommendation, but it's okay - it was perfect the way it was.
The sausage itself is a bit on the smaller side and the bun doesn't quite match up w/ Top Dog's (in Berkeley), but I still thought it was top-notch. Eating that w/ a piping-hot side of potatoes on the streets of New York in the winter was quite soothing.
There seems to be a lot of other choices on the menu, so I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.
BTW, the owner is extremely friendly and chatted w/ us for a while even though there were a handful of people behind us (my apologies to you if you were in that line). That increases my willingness to return in the future.
4.5 stars -

Behold - the wonder that is Yelp.
Seriously, how would I otherwise find a quick, cheap, tasty bite within close proximity to the MOMA amongst the array of pretzel carts and haute-cuisine in the area?
Hallo Berlin serves up a good wurst, and the owner is a real mensch. I ordered a classic currywurst (fat sausage with spicy sauce typical of Berlin) and was extremely satisfied based on taste, price and overall quality.
Next time I come down to NYC I'm going to attach this cart to the back of my car and haul it up to Boston...yah dude how 'bout dem apples! -

I read about this place, having wanted some authentic German sausage after visiting Berlin and finding out how good the food can be... so I went down the other day, and though I had to wait maybe 15 or 20 minutes (it was a nice day out in the middle of lunch time), it was amazing and well worth it. I had a combo that involved currywurst, potato salad, onions, a crusty roll, and a bavarian meatball... delicious. As good as food in Germany, and the guys who run the place seem cool.
I just wish I could come up with some other reason to go to midtown on the middle of a weekday other than just lunch so I could eat there again... but I suppose that isn't really a knock against the place itself. -

YUMMY! we had Hallo Berlin for my company's Oktoberfest party and the food was awesome.
i tried two types of bratwurst - the curry beef bratwurst and the traditional pork bratwurst, and both were grilled to perfection - both were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
this platters also came with sauerkraut, cabbage and german fries. though these items were not spectacular they were still good.
the stand out item here is the bratwurst and i will definitely be back to sample other ways they prepare this item :) -

Don't miss this street cart if you're in the area. A welcome change & VERY good.

Thank you New York. Thank you for continuing to be the mecca and center of all that is delicious food. Also, a special thanks to Kyle S. for taking me to this under-hyped scrumptious location-on-wheels, and being willing to go two days in a row.
Each person has their food made to order so the wait can be a few minutes but its worth every bit. I guess the portions could be a LITTLE better but I can not stop thinking about the flavors and sides. I ordered the currywurst and it came with sauerkraut, a biscuit, and German potato salad. Damn - I want it now. I hope this guy is a legend and a hero in every sense of the word. -

I started coming to the brat cart when I worked at Playboy on 5th and 57th, which was a sausage fest in its own way. Still, there was nothing more satisfying than a lunchtime escape to Hallo Berlin for as much sausage as I could handle.
I was originally overwhelmed by the huge variety of delicious sausages, but I eventually settled on the "double soul" combo. The mix of two sausages, fried onions and potatoes, and cabbage, was absolute heaven. And even though I practically licked my little paper tray clean and craved more, it was actually plenty of food to last through the rest of the work day.
At $7.50, the double soul was a bit on the pricey side for cart food. But there's a reason Hallo Berlin won the vendy award in 2005--it's the tastiest cart I've been to in New York, hands down. Despite the price and the long lines, it deserves its 5 stars. -

This place was on my mind all morning. I was down at a library in Midtown, slowly grinding out a project that would still need my attention after lunch. I knew that a hearty meal was in order, both to recover from the morning drudgery and keep my morale up for the coming afternoon. Hallo Berlin was a short twelve blocks away, and a little German soul food seemed like just the thing.
I walked up to what appeared to be a normal, aluminum-paneled food cart, complete with yellow patio umbrella. A smattering of ads for German companies covered the side of the cart. I got in line behind half a dozen guys who stood almost in single file. The frequency of beards and beer bellies among the clientele was high. I took this as a good sign. The line moved slowly, since the owner ran the cart himself and dealt with each customer one at a time. When I got to the front, I ordered the bauernwurst combo, also known on the menu as the "Audi". Each dish had its own nickname, borrowed from a different German car company. A Mercedes or a Wartburg were also possibilities. I'll definitely be back for the Maybach, since it's the closest I'll ever come to buying a half million-dollar luxury car.
Three cast iron frying pans at the back of the cart held a mix of these bangers in different states of doneness. I can't imagine how the owner kept track of all of them, but he seemed to have a system, casually checking and flipping a few sausages until he found the one that would be my lunch. He chopped this quickly in a wire slicer and tossed the pieces into the bottom of a paper bowl. Two covered skillets yielded scoops of fried onions and fried potatoes that, along with an equal-sized scoop of sauerkraut, topped the sliced sausage. A little wine sauce brought the dish together. For $6 I got this heaping bowl of food and small, crusty roll. I wolfed it all down within a few yards of the stand, taking bites of the roll between heavy forkfuls of sausage and sauerkraut. This place will bring me back. -
Review from Susan A.
Oh so good. Wow, Yelp, you have not let me down on this one.
The slow, slow line. But... you did warn me about this. At least you know it wasn't something someone schlepped together in 2-seconds. A+ for quality. Worth the wait? Yes. Opportunity cost? Depends on how much work you have waiting for you at your desk.... uggggggg
My only regret-- not having enough cash to try other goodies.
I can't believe I've been working here for almost a year and a half and NOT encountered this cart. I've certainly tried a good number of them in this area.
The skin of the wurst crunches in your mouth. Like that potato chip you've been eying from the corner of your eye while on a diet. Only so much better. -

I felt it was necessary to add this wonderful German street vendor stand. I walked out on 54th street and noticed a long line heading towards 5th Avenue and wondered what was going on. Low and behold, it was Rolf's stand, where he offered Bratwurst, Kartoffelbraten and other German yummies. I went there for two weeks in a row, even when it rained or when it was bitterly cold, the lines were always there. Sometimes, he has another guy there in place of him, who doesn't speak much English, he's hilarious.
The prices are a bit high for a stand, but you also get bread and sauerkraut. His list on the side of the wagon is cute. -

*3.5*
I am not sure if I had too high expectations, but I didn't love it. It definitely is a great deal, but I felt as if I can make the wursts on my own that are just as good.
I had the bratwurst, veal sausage (BMW), and the meatballs. The brats were definitely the best out of the three but pork usually does win in the battle of sausages.
What I did enjoy was the cold potato salad - too die for. I thought the red cabbage was quite delicious as well. I didn't care too much for the German fries.
Would I visit again? Definitely. Would I go out of my way and walk more than 10 blocks? I don't think so. -

Friends and I are obsessed with this cart. We were all extremely distressed that the owners were on vacation for a whole month in the summer. How dare they take a vacation when we were craving some delicious sausage & potatoes?!
Seriously though, the soul food combo is the best deal around - your choice of sausage, german potatoes, sauerkraut, onions, and that addictive mustard... I'm getting hungry for it now! -

Three words: git ya some. Just went today for the first time and it was SO GOOD. I had a cheese bratwurst topped with potatoes, onions and spicy sauce, all on a perfectly chewy and crusty roll.
At just $6, I'd say this is a deal for midtown lunchers! -

Love the cozy space, quick sausages, pitchers of beer. Very informal.
The tasty sausages are small, but the pitchers of beer ($17) are delightful and will keep me coming back. 'Cozy space' means it's small, but the service is good and the place is run very efficiently, making the tight tables and minimal wiggle room kind of homey and charming. I've had better sausages in my life, but this place is totally fine. -
Review from Jared C.
Over on 10th Avenue, a happy little beer garden exists in Hell's Kitchen, but the Hallo Berlin franchise also runs a tiny one-man street cart operation that has a following all its own. Basically it's the same stuff (minus the beer), but the 4-star rating on Yelp! compared to 3 stars for the beer garden probably attests to experience, which I would agree with.
The man running the show keeps his cool and takes and fills orders in a strict order. Place your order, then he fills it. He won't ask the next people for their order until you have your order and walk away. Efficiency could be questioned, but it's just the way it is here, probably leading to many people returning back to work late from lunch.
The 3-item "German Soul Food" is a mound of deliciousness.
It doesn't exactly appear the most appetizing thing in the world when it is placed in your hand, but the $11 trifecta of currywurst, bratwurst, and weisswurst is excellent value for two people. It comes with plenty of toppings, sauerkraut, and a small piece of bread to soak in all the juicy remains at the end.
Coming at peak lunch time hours (the stand is only open for lunch) will require a hefty wait, so it is not recommended to come if you are pinched for time, a lesson some of us learned the hard way unfortunately. The line seemed like a friendly place though, and the businessmen waiting were all generally friendly and talkative despite everyone's growing hunger. -

i am ready to be a new yorker. if this is what it takes to live in the big apple, i am more than happy to give up being a wussy californian (who complains about any slight of wind or rain) and stand on the corner of 54th street and 5th ave. to be one of many new yorkers waiting patiently in the gusty wind for the perfect scrumptious fulfilling wurst lunch.
thanks to you yelpers. i was so ready for my hallo german wurst experience. i settled for # 11--soul food mix with a choice of wurst (my final choice...smoked hungarian kielbash). the combination of meatful wurst with red cabbage, potato, and sauerkraut was just $6!!!
the pickle ($1) is MUST!!!!! it's $1 worth spending and you wouldn't regret. order it to go and walk over to central park and have a lit' picnic lunch. it will make you feel like a new yorker. -

I wish I got to Hallo Berlin more often. When only 1 guy is responsible for cramming 2 wursts and a respectable serving of home fries, cabbage, and maybe more into a container usually reserved for a small order of french fries, things tend to take a while especially when the line is long. I can, however, assure you that your lunch will be worth the wait. I have walked far out of my way for a stop here. The roll that comes with your lunch is deliciously crusty but far from stale, and they are the only restaurant (let alone cart) to include delicious Sarnac root beer as a beverage option. A STREETCART NAMED DELICIOUS!!!!

I have come to the realization that I have been eating the wrong weenies for the past two years, why I am not sure... well maybe because they are cheap and readily available on every block of Manhattan. But besides those 2 reasons I can't think of any gastronomical reasons to why. It took me 2 years to figure it out but I have found the place for your sausage/links fix in Manhattan, Hallo Berlin (cart) located on 54th St and 5th Ave.
Not readily available, Hallo Berlin is located all the way in Midtown, and only one cart per island unfortunately (the one and only). Greeted by the Babiel brother, the one with creamy baby blue eyes and a great wonderful simile, was ready to cook us some home cooked eats. We got the "Mercedes" with the works- bratwurst with cabbage, onions, and house mustard served on a crusty roll for $5 and the "Super" which is a Bavarian meatball hero with cabbage, onions, and house mustard served on a crusty roll for $4. If you've never had bratwurst before you're in for a treat, a sausage prepared with pork, beef, and sometimes veal was juicy and tender with a bite. If you love meat you'll love their bratwurst. And the Bavarian meatball - for-get-a-bout-it! 3 large sized meatballs made of pork and beef, had a nice kick to it, I think came mostly from black pepper and it was perfectly dressed with the sour and crunchy pickled cabbage.
For indecisive person they have the "Dictator Special". Everyday they rotate different dictators like Mao (maybe Hitler?) Today the dictator is Stalin, which the special ($9) will get you One Berliner Frank, One Bratwurst, topped with German Fries, Red & White Cabbage, Sauteed Onion and a Small Soup. You have no choice to choose which sausage you are gonna get.
Or you can get the Democracy specials ($10) which you got Two Wurst Topped with German Fries OR Potato Salad + The Works, Red Wine Cabbage, Sauteed onion and Two Bavarian Meatballs!
RANTS & RAVES:
The Babiel Brothers cart open from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm and serving German sausage Midtown. Choose from 10 different kinds of sausages with a numerous of condiments.
This place is fun to order, they named all the sausage after cars.
They served non-alcoholic beer.
