How is there no other hotel on the beach with balconies? The hotel itself is pretty average, but the location in Newport can't be beat.
The rooms are reasonably priced, and you can spend hours watching the surf.
And yeah, you are on the beach; it's probably about 30 seconds from your room.
In my search for a oceanfront Newport hotel that would accomodate dogs, I stumbled upon Hallmark Resort. From check-in to check-out, our stay was wonderful. The service was super friendly and excellent all-around.
Being that we brought two dogs, we were placed in a King Spa Suite on the ground floor of the hotel. We had a walk-out patio with easy access to the pet area, and a great view of the ocean.
Our room was very clean, and came complete with a two-person jacuzzi spa tub, gas fireplace and a comfy bed. The dogs also got a special gift basket with treats, portable bowls, beach towels and toys.
Beach access was very convenient from two locations on the property.
The only issues we had with the room were the fact that there was not air conditioning and both the mini-fridge and the coffee maker did not work intially. A quick call to the front desk got the mini-fridge working again, as well as a coffee maker replacement.
Both we and the dogs had a wonderful time however, and we will surely be return for future stays when we head to Newport again.

Didn't need to use the conference room after all because I broke a couple of ribs and spent the day and night in Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. No business meeting for you today, bad boy!
The wife called Sunny to let her know I didn't need the conference room that afternoon. Fortunately, Sunny understood my situation and cancelled the reservation WITHOUT charging me the $50 for the conference room. Nice.
Then--get this--the Hallmark Resort Sales office ladies sent a flower to me at the SPCH emergency room!
Incredible!
Sunny, you have a customer for life! Many, many thanks...

Ok, here's the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for the Hallmark at Newport.
First the Good.
They are ideally located on the Oregon coast so that the rooms have fabulous ocean front views, and close enough to the water that you can lull yourself to sleep with the sounds of surf. Nice.
Our room was huge and had a great walk out patio with chairs to enjoy the stunning ocean views.
The room seemed relatively clean for an older hotel.
The staff were helpful and very friendly.
They have some dog friendly rooms.
They actually honored our "do not disturb" sign and didn't bug us for a turndown service or anything else. (this is important when you have dogs in the room and don't want them barking at a knock on the door).
The beds were quite comfy and I slept better on them than my bed at home (I am now seeking a new mattress...). In fact I even took the sheet off to try and identify the mattress brand tag, but failed in my quest, as alas,--no tags were to be found. But I digress...
The Bad:
The room decor was dated vintage late 1980s or 1990s or whenever mauve and peach were the dominant color schemes. Picture a set from the Golden Girls, or your granny's house in Florida. In fact, it was pretty funny. We didn't care so much, except that for nearly $200 a night, I expect at least *some* updating to have occurred in the past two decades or so. Oh well, call me picky. I'm just sayin...
(Note: my friends stayed in the honeymoon suite and they said their room WAS updated, and was fabulous. So, clearly, we just got one of the dated rooms.)
And, the room does have the basic amenities--we got the suite with "kitchenette" which includes a microwave, mini fridge and dishwasher. The appliances were also very old--the fridge barely kept things cold and I could not find an adjustment knob on it, so the milk and beer were kinda lukewarm-ish. Oddly, there were cooking pans in the cabinet....but no stove, so...uh. The dishwasher is so loud as to drown out everything within about a half mile distance, so only run that puppy when you plan on leaving the room for a while.
This next bit is just an FYI: you will have to walk down a lot of stairs to get to the actual beach--which is not necessarily bad, but if you are carrying a cooler and load of wood for a beach bonfire, could be quite a trek. Also, I am sharing this in case you have bad knees or are somewhat disabled--you will not be able to just roll out onto the beach here in Newport, the hotel is on a cliff.
The Ugly.
I hate to even mention this bit, as generally speaking, this is a nice hotel and I *might* consider staying there again, but I have to reveal it. I was laying on the bed watching TV and kept *sniff*sniff* smelling something wrong. It smelled like urine. I kept sniffing around, looking for spots on the carpet, etc. After all, it is a dog friendly room, and while my dogs are house broken, you never know the history of the carpet. I finally realized, to my horror, that the smell was coming from the BEDSPREAD. Gross! Seriously, I was actually laying down on a bed spread that smelled as if someone took a nice long whiz on it, only moments ago. Look--I know that hotels don't switch out the bedspreads every day, but you could smell this from a couple feet away. To their credit, they did replace it immediately with a clean one when we called, but still. Clean the laundry or at least check it! Nasty.
So, this left me with an overall impression of about a three star review. I don't expect perfection, though admittedly my expectations are a bit high for nearly $200 a night. The hotel is generally nice, and I think they are trying. Update the rooms and keep things clean, and this hotel will go up a few ticks.
Storm watchers special is where it's at! This is the best find on the Oregon Coast. King suite with an ocean view and a jacuzzi tub in the room? For $150 bucks? Done and done. I have stayed here many times, some with our dog and some without. If you are staying with a dog, they put you on the ground floor so that you can just open up your patio door and be in the "dog exercise area." The exercise area isn't that great, but how can I complain, the beach is 20 feet away.
They have a indoor pool onsite as well. It tends to have lots of kids in it, so I say stick to the jacuzzi in your room, but depends on what you are looking for. You even get a fridge and microwave in your room so you don't have to eat at their restaurant if you don't want (a little pricey, but pretty good). Right on the beach and close to downtown Newport. Nye beach is also close by and has many cute restaurants and shops.
I have mixed reviews about our stay. We spent $160 for a queen sized bed on a Thursday night, which being that the room was oceanfront seemed reasonable. We got to the hotel, checked in quickly, and went to our room.
Upon arriving in the room we were struck by the overwhelming odor of urine, most likely from an animal. Not only were we not told that this room was "animal friendly" but I am allergic to dogs. Anyways, since the hotel was really busy we decided to try airing out the room. Eventually the smell seemed to go away, or we got use to it.
The plus side was that the view was gorgous. The rooms, however, are not sound proof at all. We could hear people running around outside our room until after 1am. Not great when you are with your SO trying to have a romantic night away.
The next morning we ordered room service from the resturant ajacent to the hotel, which I recommend. The food was great and they got the food to us pretty fast. However, by this point the smell had returned and I had hives from the animal dander in the room.
When we went to check out I mentioned all this to the desk clerk, who said nothing and gave us our paperwork. No appologies, no explination of why we weren't told animals were allowed in the room... nothing. So while I really liked the location, I would NEVER stay there again.

Amazing views, pleasant staff and dreamy beds.
We stayed in room 235 - it was on the first floor and a walk out. We booked a room at Hallmark Resort during the annual Newport Seafood and Wine Festival. During the Festival, there was a shuttle stop close to Hallmark. Also, the hotel provided two (2) wine glasses for their hotel guests. We had the room for one (1) night for a rate of $198.00. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but there was an event in the city, so we don't think we could have gotten a place equal to this for less. We had four (4) adults in the room. There is plenty of space in the room for four (4) adults. There was enough room at the end of the beds for our small dog to run around. The hotel is pet-friendly and has a fee of $15.00, but not sure if that's per visit or per night. The room was odorless; what a relief! The hotel rooms are nonsmoking, but we could smell other guests smoking on their deck or terrace. It was annoying. Our room included two (2) pillow-top, queen-sized beds that each came with two (2) standard pillows. The sink was separate than the toilet and shower/tub and there was a gas fireplace in the room. All the drains and hot water worked properly. The paint is a bit old and the room looked like it needed a bit of retouching. The staff was courteous and dropped of extra towels and a hair dryer. We couldn't find a hair dryer at first. The gas fireplace quickly heated up the room. The ocean views were amazing. The room almost had floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall views. We took advantage of the walkout because of our dog. There were several sets of staircases for guests to reach to the beach. We're glad we choose Hallmark because Shilo Inn and Elizabeth Inn did not look as good as Hallmark did from the beach, call me bias. We didn't use the pool, fitness center, restaurant or other hotel amenities besides those listed above.
All in all, we would recommend Hallmark Resort to friends and family.

This is one of the hotels in Oregon coast that I recommend in the Newport area. I haven't stayed at the Hallmark Resort in Cannon Beach Oregon before. I really like the view. Everytime that we book the room, either the King Spa Stateroom or the traditional room for 2, we always have a good view of the ocean. This hotel booked up really quickly even on non-holiday weekends. I love the King Spa stateroom. It's very spacious. They have really good service. A couple of years ago I stayed there for my 7 year anniversary with my fiancee and I accidently left my shirt in the closet. They called us and said they can ship my shirt to my address. I never got a call from a hotel stating I left my personal items there & for them to initiate to ship it to me. It was very generous of them. Another time when I order some breakfast from Georgies Beachside Grill to my room and it took about 1 hr and 15 min to get to me;the waitress apoligized because she went to the wrong end of the hotel so the food was getting cold, she offer me and my fiancee extra hashbrowns and fresh fruits. It was very kind of her. The service is excellent. We had breakfast and dinner at Georgies Beachside Grill, which is located right next to the resort, several times and the food is good. This restaurant is always packed. I like to order the food to my room because sometimes, the restaurant do get a little bit too noisy. This is the only restaurant that I know about around Newport that's nice and clean with decent food;the one thing I'm getting disappointed is the service at the restaurant itself is declining;they are not as friendly as before;the service I get from room service is excellent.
As for the Hallmark Resort, they do have excellent service. It doesn't matter what room you booked, either the suite or the traditional rooms, you still get the same excellent service. All the rooms that I stayed at are clean, spacious, oceanview, and it had a very comfortable atmosphere. I prefer that the bed is closer to the window. When we stayed at the suite, their mini livingroom sort of blocks the oceanview. The TV is all the way in the livingroom section which is on the leftside of our bed; so when we lay on our bed, we have to lay sideway to watch TV. Overall, this is a nice hotel with good service, clean room, and have nice oceanview.
ok, the coffee alone is worth a trip. mom visiting from the mid-west we needed an ocean fix. googled hotels on the ocean and lucked out. amazing views, we took binoculars watched whales and a few shore birds, when it got dark we made dinner and turned on the fire and watched the waves roll in. they have a coffee cart in the am, the most incredible coffee find anywhere, locally roasted organic beans, ground to order and brewed perfectly...the drive through Lincoln is sad, but once inside you can shut out the world and enjoy the view.
