This ride was a lot of fun. My husband and I tried to stay in the back so people who were faster and more experienced atv'ers can go the speed they want without giving us the pressure to go any faster and causing us to do something we would regret, like driving over a large rock and flipping the atv over. So to the back we went.
When we felt more confident, or actually when I felt more confident, I paced it so that people ahead were further up and I left a large gap to play catch up at top speed and left my husband behind :D
We took the 2 hour tour, but I think I would have liked to stay longer on the atv and like others have said, the 2 hours includes in getting instructions, a training course, a stop for photos and snack.
The next day my wrists were hurting after the atv tour, I think from gripping the handles too tight. BUT, was totally worth the fun.
We had to rent cover alls for the ride, we didn't think we would get that dirty at first because in their ad pictures online they have a chick with no helmet wearing a tank top, but our matching white tennis shoes we bought for our Maui trip came back to a matching reddish brown filth. So we had matching dirty brown shoes for the rest of our trip that was impossible to get clean.
Ladies should note that there are no restroom facilities, but an outhouse in the back of the ranch. The staff recommends going before the atv tour because once you are on the atv track, there are no restroom stops and the cold air gets you.
The staff was very friendly and we had a pretty cool tour guide. Towards the end of our tour we saw a cute little calf up close and cattle, but they ignored us. We both learned very quickly to not straddle the seat going over rough roads, but instead to hunch over and and lift ourselves over the seat in a half stand position.
Super fun for our first atv ride, but afterwards I look at every hill and construction site around my hometown and wished I had an atv tear up those hills.
My husband and I stopped at a little deli called Sunrise Deli on our way out from Haleakala recommended by one of the ATV reception ladies. Many people from the bike tours stop here for a quick bite. It was nice to sit out at the benches, eat a sandwich, get a drink, and feed the birds to tone things down a bit after this intense ride.

Um... how much do these things cost? 'cause I'm going to need to go ahead and purchase one.
We woke our asses up bright and early, drove across the island to get this place.. and spent 3 delightful hours raring and tearing around on four wheelers.
At first it seemed a bit lame, driving around in a single file line on dirt paths.. but after a while you realize you can spread out a bit and then have a bit of fun. I let the person in front of me get nice and far ahead and then just gun it... flying around side to side, up and down and practically hurling myself off my ATV.
One piece of advice, either rent the dust suit or bring a change of clothes that you won't want to wear again on your trip because you will get super dirty.
I highly recommend an ATV tour... it's something different to do on the island and tons of fun.

This was a lot of fun!!! You'll definitely want to do the 3-hour tour, because you'll actually ONLY spend about 1.8 hours of it on your ATV, the other time is taken up by instructions and checking in...
ATV ride: Awesome, they have this trail blazed for you so you know exactly where to go, but we were in a single file, so that was somewhat disappointing. As Derek stated, started off kinda boring, but once you realize you can slow down then burn rubber and learn how to shift up and down, you're going to have a spectacular time.
Tour: Well, they called it a tour, mostly it was just following the leader of the pack. We made one stop, which was to go on a short hike to a remote area to get educated on what the "rainforest" used to look like... other than that, you're paying for the ride and not really a "tour".
Price: A little pricey, $135 for 3 hours, while only really riding for less than 2 hours?
Overall: Fun experience, a word of warning... although the ATVs can climb over some boulders, you shouldn't try doing it going uphill.... why? well, one of my friend's ATV went vertical and toppled over to the side, does that paint you a good picture? Luckily the fell to the side and not on top of him, because those suckers are around 400 lbs!!! The ride gets 5 stars, for I took one star out because it was pricey and we didn't get to ride for 3 hours (like I expected).
PHEWWW, I think I'm finally done with all of my Maui reviews... pat on back... haahaa

My entire body hurts. Hurts like I've been put in a giant tire and bounced off a steep cliff. Yesterday, we went ATV'ing and wow. WOW I say. I was definitely put in my place of Girl Who Doesn't Off Road. The ATVs looked harmless enough, but the terrain kicked my ass. The guides must be some of the most gentle souls I have ever met. They didn't once make me feel like I was a complete ATV retard. I went through the practice course scared and afraid for my life. The guide who gave me the "go" was freaking out as I was driving the p.c. because I was almost leaning at a 45 degree angle on some of the hills. Ugh. Talk about retarded and more retarded. But after the p.c. our main guide came over, took his sunglasses off and asked "How are you feeling?" And I managed, through my face sock (a.k.a. head condom, stink rag) and helmet to say "I'm okay" and shrugged a bit. He looked at me again, intently, as if trying to see into my soul - that little scared me hiding in the corner, shrinking away from the ATV as quickly as I could. He gave me a nod and went to check on the others.
The beginning of the trail was rough. Lots of rocks, roots and holes. I went through them like a jello-legged granny, holding on for dear life. I forgot I was supposed to be taking in the scenery so I slowed down and looked around me. What we drove through were grasslands which used to be a three-canopied rainforest. The introduction of feral animals, non-indigenous trees and foreign explorers depleted the rainforest within a span of 50 years. It was still quite beautiful up there, in the fog, surrounded by rolling hills and curious blue exploding rocks and ferns. The chorus of moo's as we passed made me laugh and stop to take a photo of these cows almost causing my sister to crash into the back of my ATV.
We made a couple of stops - the first was to gather myself, the others were raving about the landscape, chests pumped from the rugged ride and I slink off my ATV to join them for a photo opportunity. The second stop was at the highest point of our tour. We listened to our guide play the uke and sing us a song. We had Aloha juice and soaked in the quiet beauty of forest around us.
By the time we headed back, I was ready to do wheelies. I rode with my butt off the seat so my legs could absorb the shock of the bumps. My speedometer read 13mph and I let out a 'hell yeah' under my breath, under my face sock, under my helmet. I climbed up those steep rocky hills and I rolled effortlessly down the slopes, feeling like a salty crunchy granola outdoorsy daredevil. It was a GREAT (fleeting) feeling.
At the end of our tour, we gathered at the barn to wash our faces of exhaust and red dirt. We drank water and gushed about ourselves and our newfound love for off-road ATV'ing. I was sad to leave. I was just starting to feel comfortable in maneuvering that clumsy vehicle and feeling like I hadn't absorbed enough of the scenery.
