7 reviews for Hale and Hearty Soups
Don't be put off if the queue extends past the front door when you arrive at Hale and Hearty - they move rapidly in this soup joint! Their creamy tomato with pasta & meatballs provided me a guilty kind of pleasure and made me more than a little glad they don't post the calorie count for soups on special.
Next time I'll get the 10 vegetable soup, that is, if I can resist the call of something creamier...
It's grown on me. Initially, I was skeptical. After enjoying regular Mexican Chicken Tortilla soups at the SF Soup Co. back in the Bay for two years straight I took one sample taste of a corn chowder here and was crushed. Their menu is huge...and a bit overwhelming. Portioned into the Regular, Today's, and then Specials you can easily miss some good ones if you allow yourself to be rushed by the lunch crowd. I suggest you step back and take a moment before diving into line unless you want your black bean soup sample on your blouse.
They also have a chopped salad bar which is superior. They have different sized salads so you don't end up with more or less than you want. Their sandwich selection is mediocre and all pre-made. I usually go with the tomato mozzarella on ciabatta half sandwich which would be perfect if they put balsamic on it but after I add it back at my desk it's amazing.
Everyone needs a soup, salad and sandwich spot and this is in my rotation. The INCREDIBLE coconut chicken soup today almost rivaled my old fave in San Francisco, chicken tortilla. I said almost.
2 large soups, a pair of choc chunk cookies, and a turkey cranberry sammich. $25. That's a pair of BCBG pumps at DSW folks. But whatever. The weather was horrendous and there was nothing I wanted more than soup at that very moment. And I've been curious about Hale and Hearty since I moved to this blessed city. The soups were both SOOO good. Crab chowder was sweet and spicy, a shout out to that part of me that wishes I was Creole. Tomato base, chunks of fresh mushroom and real crab meat (somehow between scarfs of soup I managed to spot an actual piece of claw meat!). The sweet corn chowder was actually sweet and creamy, probably the best I've ever tasted. Honestly. The sandwich was so-so; the bread was too hard on the outside crust and too soggy inside from being out all day (I swooped in right before closing), the turkey tasted like regular deli meat instead of fresh roasted turkey breast which is what I expected for $25 worth of soup and sandwich. The cookies were really yummy, soft and chewy. The food was very good for the deli-style place that Hale and Hearty is, and I can definitely see myself wanting to splurge on their soups in the future.
I love this place because there are tons and tons of yummy soups to choose from daily. It's the one place you can go and have a choice of about 20 soups without waiting in an extremely outrageously long line (Whole Foods). The soups are priced about the same as any deli sandwich and come with a slice of bread. No, it's not cheap for lunch, but it's dependable and safe when you're in the mood for soup.
Like all the others, a haven on a cold, rainy day.
I LOVE the dairy-free tomato soups here. Simply amazing. The salads are average, but a salad-and-soup combo makes for a great lunch. I only wish there was one closer to my office!
the soup line is long during lunchtime, but moves quickly.
the number of soups offered is often times overwhelming and they don't list out the ingredients so you often have to guess what the soup consists of. fortunately, you can sample before buying, which will help you determine is a soup is too salty, too creamy, or too sweet. if you're type-a and want to see the menu beforehand, there is a website you can go to and check out their daily specials before you head outside.
the 10 vegetable soup is always on the menu, thank goodness. it's hearty, amazing, addictive and relatively healthy! it's the best pick-me-up for a gloomy day - and you get a choice of oyster crackers, sourdough bread, or multigrain bread along with it. i always go and try another soup, but more often than not, i will end up with the 10 vegetable anyways... because it is THAT good.
plus, it's buy 10 medium+ soups, get one free!
