Definitely my favorite place for coffee downtown.

+ Amazing staff, love them all!
+ Reasonable prices
+ Great downtown lounge atmosphere with outdoor seating
+ Awesome coffee

I've never eaten there, so I really can't comment on that. Check this place out for some good times.

These guys had a terrible attitude and for the price, poor food. Disappointing.

When I asked for the onion in a wrap not to be added I was curtly told that "they're pre-made". Then when I asked for milk to go with my tea, you would have thought I was demanding an arm and a leg.

This is not a review about Halcyon at night, when it's very busy and right in the middle of the 4th Street scene.

Rather, it's a review about Halcyon during the day when it's a bit quieter and is just about the best place in all of downtown to find a peaceful spot to wi-fi and grab a bite to eat.

There are lots of nooks and crannies to set up camp and polish off your last-minute court filing, check  your email, build the next amazing social media software, or whatever all of us notebook-types do in coffeehouses.  Lots of outlets and good wi-fi connectivity!

As for food, the carrot cake is awesome.  It's served with fresh berries (or mine was) which were also quite tasty.

And the service -- always excellent! The last time I was there, I ordered iced black tea.  I don't think a lot of folks who go to Halcyon drink iced tea; but I do.  And this tea was sadly old and had that unfortunate old-iced-tea look and taste that would make Burl Ives quite unhappy.

When my cake was served, I mentioned it to the barista who graciously removed it and offered me brewed iced tea (which I love and never usually ask for since it can be quite a pain to make).

But, never fear, Halcyon is prepared.

He brought me some yummy Earl Gray in that very cool kind of transparent brewing pot that releases on the bottom.  In a couple of minutes, I was effortlessly creating my own iced tea.  And it was great!

One last thing -- they do have a cigarette bar.  I don't smoke, but I believe I saw Dunhill boxes.  And maybe Gitanes?

Can we get one of these in Atlanta?!?!

This was the BEST late-night spot I have ever been too! I visited both Friday and Saturday nights after the Widespread concert last weekend and ordered the same thing both nights! Caprese Panini and Spinach Dip for the table. I'm sure if it weren't midnight I would have explored the menu more, but at least I know what i like:) I Love the couches all over the restaurant too.

I cant believe this place exists! Its PERFECT! Next time I will try to the smores which you can make at your table!

If you were there on Saturday and saw a smurf dancing around... that might have been me:)

Great place. Perfect for the freelancer worker who wants to get out of the house and work in a more social atmosphere. The 'wrap' I ordered was actually a pressed sandwich (using a wrap rather than bread), but thoroughly enjoyable. Just that the menu should not say 'wrap' if it's not a wrap, right? I had a very nice glass of wine. The staff was very nice. Just a pleasant experience all around. I found a parking spot on the street very easily, but had that spot not been there, I would have had to either drive around searching for a spot, or pay for parking in a lot. That is the only downside to Halcyon for me. But I will not begrudge this establishment a star for parking issues since it is downtown.

My Thursday Night Excursion:
The first time I went was for work. The second was because I had been to House Wine for a glass of wine. Wanting to go somewhere different, and new to Austin, I had no idea where to go. I was alone, which is nothing new these days (see: new to austin). Halcyon not the greatest place to go at night solo. You have to pay for parking and you'll be surrounded by small groups of socializers. I didn't really feel left out because that's not what I was longing for. So I found a place I would definitely meet friends at for a libation at night, but not someplace I'd go alone for a quiet glass of wine. I won't change my star rating since I stand with my original observation of Halcyon as a great place to work in the afternoon.

A laid back, coffee house atmosphere (chairs, tables and couches) The short and skinny: Great paninis and the "make your own" smores are a good dessert diversion. Great coffee too! The outside dining area is a nice people watching spot and excellent for the occasional bike race.

No doubt one of those locations whose reputation is at least predicated somewhat on its legacy: in the last ten years it's seen a facelift, but some of Halcyon's original zeitgeist remain: it's a coffee friendly bar with its own bustling patio culture, and to that end expect some spot-on people watching around here. Most afternoons it's pretty chill, but in the evenings things tend to open up and while I wouldn't reference this place as hopping, it's certainly hoppier than some spots, with a decent brew selection happening.

That you can also treat yourself to a decent glass of wine as I recall is an added bonus, but in the evening I think the real star here are the cocktails: the chocolate espresso martini was as good as any I've had in the city. We'll be back around, Halcyon: heaven knows we've seen plenty of each other in between when I saunter by.

Nice chill atmosphere during the day and sometimes at night. Although, during the first real cold snap of last year we thought we had a great idea to skip dessert at dinner and go eat smores here instead. Apparently everyone else decided to as well. So just be warned on cold nights it gets busy here.

That being said, the drinks are fantastic here. The coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages! They also make some drinks here that Peche makes and they're cheaper and some of them actually taste better. I like coming here on Saturday's to study and eat lunch. I like their lunch panini's I've never had their breakfast but it sounds good. This is definitely in my rotation of study spots near my house during the day only though. Like I said, it's definitely NOT quiet and relaxing at night but it's still nice.

Oh man.. I miss the Old Ruta Maya...

Back when it was Ruta Maya, it felt like the center of the Austin Universe.  They roasted their own organic coffee beans,  had live music, tasty vegetarian sandwiches... a nice walk-in humidor... all sorts of characters from all walks of life coming and going... wonderful place to meet people, socialize, grab a coffee...  and of course watch people.

With Halcyon, all that feels far gone and dead...  The coffee is pretty lame, the drinks are way over priced, the food is not very good,  and the mix of people is just kind of bland.

This latest iteration of Halcyon has seen the virtual elimination of the humidor...  No longer is it a "walk-in" humidor... but a  "wait for the guy to unlock the door and inch-in one person at a time" humidor with a very poor selection.

The atmosphere is trying to be a little more swank,  but the service is not up to standards.  It feels very much like it's trying to be a yuppie bar... and just feels very out of place.

It is still a great location, great outside patio,  and a great place to sit back, smoke a cigar (which you'll probably want to bring yourself) and watch people.    ....mostly drunk people falling down the small stairs into the street.

The smores are good and all, but I wish they weren't so pricey! Sigh. Many a time I have come here in need of a dessert fix, but then I see the prices and remember I just can't do it. No, no. You have to be in the mood for a SMORE fix in particular. Then the stars will align and all will be right.

Elsewise, tortellini basil pesto salad was good; considering other menu prices, it's a bargain for the amount they stuff in that little bowl!

Cheese plates are good, but definitely on the hoity toity side of the menu.

I really like Halcyon. I come here very often. It's very lax and chill. Great music and an awesome place to bring friends who are not from this area. Or you could even come here alone, and read. I'm not sure if the Wi-Fi is free, but I've seen lots of peeps in here with their laptops just...relaxing. :)

I love that this place has a patio. The only thing that sucks about the patio...there's a lot of traffic through it. But if you manage to position your chair right to where you wont be in the way, then  you should be good.

I absolutely love how lounge-type this place is. OH, and I'm in LOVE with the doors. Weird, I know..lol, but the entrance doors are BEAUTIFUL. You  should check it outtt. :)

I've been on a coffee-shop reviewing kick lately, so I think I'm in the right frame of mind right now to give this place a fair looking-at. Since the face lift, the space has become less coffee-shop, more bar. Which is probably exactly what it should be, being located at 4th/Lavaca and all. As a bar, it's not a bad place to stop early in the evening, but it's not the kind of place that really gets you pumped up. Relaxed atmosphere, classy crowd, and classy drinks. Price range is what you'd expect for 4th street, and the vagabonds tend to disappear by 9 or 10 o'clock.

As a coffee-house in the traditional sense, it's a different animal. Not reaaaalllly a place to go study and get work done, but that's a problem for me mostly because I can't help but people watch, and being in the heart of downtown, it's understandable that there is a huge huge range of characters coming in to get caffeine or alcohol.

I don't know if they're officially famous for their s'mores, but, as far as I've heard, anytime Halcyon comes up, the s'mores do as well. I've had them from time to time, and I think it's more of an activity than a treat, which is not to say they're not delicious. So, all in all, not bad, does well enough with the market it would appeal to on that corner of downtown.

I tried not to like this place.  I really did.  However, working in the warehouse district I don't think I have a choice.  Thank you Halcyon for selling me coffee and hummus wraps before work and cigarettes and drinks when I get off.

Late at night it seems to take quite awhile to get service from any of the workers, regardless of how busy it is.  Their coffee also isn't the best, but it's better than Starbucks and not dreadfully expensive.  I'm not sure if I would take a specific trip to Halcyon if I wasn't already in the area, but it does the job when I am!

I've been in love with just one coffeeshop since moving to Austin one year ago. In fact, my lover and I have never failed to see each other at least twice a week since we met back in July of 2008. Details will be spared here, but know that things have been lovely.

Until, one day, things went so innocently wrong. He couldn't be reached due to a really bad citywide rush-hour traffic-jam. We made promises to see each other soon, but I was feeling lonely that afternoon and thought I would just hang around downtown for awhile, you know, to wait for the storm to blow over so that I could see my beau later that night.

But something unexpected happened. It was like one of those moments you dream about but know will never come true...a parking spot became available right in front the Halcyon and I was able to whip right in.

Obviously, there were immediate sparks between us and I stayed longer than I should have. But he was so charming and so accommodating there was no way I could not have stayed, at least for a little while.

I've always been a loyal girlfriend, but now I'm rethinking my current monogomous coffeeshop relationship. Can a girl keep a coffeeshop on the southside and still have room for one more north of the river?

And so begins my series of "complimentary Yelp meals" --- not that yelp is giving me food for free, but more like my friends keep treating me to places that I have yet to yelp.

Anywho, we wanted to go to Apple Annie's because we read online, it said on their menu, AND their phone operator that they were open until 2am. What a trick. We get there and they tell us that they JUST started to close at midnight that weekend. Whatevs, so we walk downtown to Halcyon. We figured we'd eat there again since it was a classic and i was reminded, once again, how much i like that place.

The atmosphere is very..."mature austin." The crowd is usually older, and everyone is having a late night smoke or enjoying an alcoholic beverage. But we came for food. Lol. I had the Chicken Pesto Pannini and a Mango Italian Soda. *Drool*  Honestly, the pannini is cooked to PERFECTION. Not too hot where you can't hold the darn thing, but warm enough to have the chicken release some steam when you take a bite. And of course, the Mango italian soda goes without saying. Delicious.

Atmosphere is ALWAYS great. You can go to chat with some friends, maybe study (if you like the loud music) or, if you were there on a Saturday night as we were, see some lovebirds exchanging snoggs. Whatever it may be, you'll feel right at home. You don't have to dress up or anything, yet the place does give off some sort of classy vibe. Service is good, the guy who helped us kept offering to make things warmer, better, etc.

Now, onto the best and last part. THE MUSIC. I have NEVER, and i mean NEVER come here, without diggin' the music they played. I can't even describe it. The music they play is very indie/underground and maybe that's just because my knowledge of music is limited, but whatevs. The sounds are mellow enough to keep you chill yet there's always a really good beat that can get you pumped for a night on the town.

They're smores are good too. :)

You know, I really want to like Halcyon because I love the concept and the ambiance of the place, but as a coffee bar lounge you have to be able to deliver good coffee...at least when you're in a city like Austin.

My latte was way hotter than it should have been and tasted like the beans were stale and over-roasted and the shot was pulled too short. In other words, it tasted like Starbucks. That's disgusting. Someone else bought it for me so I tried to act like it was good and just drink it, but it wasn't getting finished -no way, no how.

Please Halcyon, start making better coffee.

I wasn't a fan of this place. I went for lunch one day and ordered the Turkey Pepper jack Panini. First off let me say, Paninis are grilled sandwiches, not slightly warmed ones.

The service was inattentive. I waited 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged me, and I was only one one there.

I do like to open windows and doors so it feels like you're in the mix of the street goings on. But I can get that same feeling across the street at 219.

Oh, and I considered giving them a second chance when I saw the "Now serving Torchy's Tacos sign" but apparently they only serve breakfast tacos.

Two years ago I visited Halcyon when it was a spacious and daring coffee shop.  We learned, on a recent visit, that not long after that first visit management decided to downsize the footprint and, take down all the art except the blandest, and give the place a face-lift, leaving only a sliver of its original character.  You'll see it at the bottom corner of the menu, the s'mores for 2 or 4.  Everything else is almost hard to recognize.

I miss the original.  For two years, Halcyon was the centerpiece of our anticipation of another trip to Austin.  It's still a nice place to hang out, but it's just not the same.

For the artsy yup that smokes, drinks, indulges in coffee, chocolate, pretty people, and secondhand Karaoke.  This place is definitely addicting!

One of Austin's best places to catch a cup of joe, for sure.  The coffee-quality is quite good, and with a great tobacco / cigar selection, food menu, and nightlife location, Halcyon is perfect for your early evening hang out.  You can check your e-mail, people watch, catch some decent food (I recommend the croissants), or even power-nap on the spacious couches.  Everything you need in a place when you get to town and realize its too early to go to the bar, but still want a cocktail.  They do make a mean Irish Coffee, too!

Halcyon is also wickedly conveniently close to some great nighttime hot-spots...  so much so that from the porch, you can hear the Skaraoke blaring from the bar next-door.  There's also the pretentious Truluck's a block away, if you just can't resist the call of the sea.

The atmosphere and warm, quirky staff remains inviting, especially to the regulars.  There's always great art on the walls, and you almost always run into someone interesting.

First off:  My visit to Austin last week rocked.  I plan to write several reviews, but I must begin with Halcyon Coffee-Bar-Lounge.  Like an oasis, this lovely cafe appeared right when I desperately needed a clean restroom, to put my stiletto sore feet up, to drink some tea, and to have a snack to bring up my blood sugar.  I walked in past sexy looking patrons having a smoke, chatting, and drinking various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on a sun-dappled patio.  SXSW brought an eclectic crowd of locals and visitors, one of whom was kind enough to let me use his laptop (free high speed internet) to re-orient myself.  Fluffy couches, a spotless restroom and fantastic, unexpected tea selection, not to mention my fave Austin band Ghostland Observatory playing over the speakers, beckoned me and encouraged me to hang out despite the impending rush hour traffic to San Antonio.

Chatty, adorably hip staff attended to my needs with a smile and sweet questions about my stay in Austin.  Patrons were equally cheerful and polite, and the atmosphere buzzed with the excitement of a beautiful 80 degree spring day, SXSW madness and overall sense of happiness to be right where we were at the moment.  A vegan sandwich hit the spot like nobody's business, and I even got some tips for future visits.  Highly recommended!  I even got props for my shoes, which hurt a little less thereafter.  Don't eat sugar or drink, but if I did I'd get a brandy alexander (my porn name!) and a smore!

Seriously - why don't more coffee shops have s'mores?

I didn't try the drinks or anything else offered here, but why should I? S'mores are usually regulated to camping trips rarely taken, or desperate times in need of chocolate where I end up microwaving the marshmallow. Sad. The mere fact that I could go to a shop with some friends and hang out with drinks and bond over s'mores in an urban setting is -awesome-. I will come here every time I'm in Austin!

They really need a place like this in Miami.  If anyone knows of such a thing, please let me know.

It's been about 4 years since I discovered this gem of an establishment, when I was in town for Austin City Limits Music Fest.  I walked inside, sunburned and exhausted, and felt like I had gone down the rabbit hole and into the most amazing coffee shop in the world.  "I must be tripping", I thought.  Where had this place been throughout my whole coffee-junkie existence?!

The beauty of Halcyon is that it's a coffee shop and bar all rolled into one beautiful space.  Wooden floors, dim lighting, and comfy couches abound.  One one side, they serve baked goodies, lattes, and tea.  Walk over toward the back of the joint and you come across a full bar.

What an amazing concept!

I dream about going back to this place... Hopefully I will revisit during this year's ACL Fest.

Typically, I people watch. And at this place, the staff are really nice and understanding. But I have to say, some of the customers are really irritating to watch because they essentially treat the staff as 3rd class citizens. So I'd say if you like the pompous atmosphere, hit it up. I prefer starbucks - though starbucks doesn't serve alcohol or tobacco. I have to say it's the people that killed the good vibe this place was trying to envoke.

This place serves alcohol/tobacco. And they typically ask for ID (although i've heard times where they don't even ask for id - wink wink) - Like you watch people get angry because they try to order a drink without an ID and I feel sorry for the staff because I think the customers are really stupid.

I agree with a previous post that their staff seems to have a high turn around. Again, this probably is due - not to poor customer service - but to bad customers.

Good staff - loud music - soft seats - o and they serve food - and sometimes have live music!

Again, I think the customers killed this place for me.

Not terrible.  Not blowing me out of the water either.
I met my Stitch n' Bitch group here and we found comfy seating and glasses of wine available.  Their prices are a bit high, especially for their desserts and small treats.
The music is WAY too loud.  I'm not an old lady by any means, but it was rather difficult to have any kind of conversation with people sitting next to me.
I remember this place from the 'before time' when I visited Austin in the late 90s and I remember it being a little less club and more arty.  Was that just the time?
Oh, and parking is such a joke downtown.  This reminded me why I typically avoid it.
I doubt I'll go back on my own.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a huge fan, but that is probably because I'm not really a coffeeshop person.

However, as far as coffeeshops go, this one has pretty much everything going for it and I can only identify one negative.
+++++
1. great location and it looks pretty cool
2. cool vibe; gradually turns from studious to kind of drunk as it gets dark
3. excellent liquor and cigarette selection
4. I had the spicy chicken black bean panini and it was really good
5. free wireless
- - - - -
1. the coffee drinks take a LONG TIME if you're used to the speedy service of Starbucks

The "roast your own s'mores" phenom has yet to reach Seattle. I hope it does, and soon.

In search of a coffee shop on a recent visit to Austin, I ended up at Halcyon. They serve not only coffee, but booze and some food as well. As I mentioned, you can make your own smores here. Imagine sitting at your table with a package of graham crackers, Hershey's chocolate bars, marshmallows and a an open flame! FUN.

Unfortunately, I was too full to order the smores. I enjoyed a cappuccino though. Good crowd and decent music. Can see why it's a big hit.

When you've partied out all along 6th street and are looking to wind down, this is the place to be. If I could somehow put a headline on this, it would be "Yes, they have smores, and you'd be a fool not to get them". It's a coffee bar / lounge, and so I did what anyone else would do in such a situation, get a friend to surprise you with a yummy drink. I wasn't disappointed either. It was an iced coffee + liquor thing which had just enough caffeine to keep you going and just enough alcohol to prevent coming down hard after a long night of partying.

We had a large group (8) but seating was absolutely no problem. We grabbed some couches towards the back, and basically closed the place out with good conversation around a small fire cooking our smores.

The atmosphere, the prices, and the late hours make Halcyon a place I'm definitely coming back to when I'm in Austin next. I suppose the next time I'm going to also find out what that drink was my friend bought me.

Update: I am informed the drink I had was a "Long Island Iced Coffee", just for review completeness.

This place is definitely getting four stars just for the atmosphere. It was incredibly laid back, nice for conversation and relaxing, or even just quietly relaxing. My espresso chocolate martini was delicious.

I'd love to go back here. I think if I lived in Austin I'd definitely be there way more often.  It's a great vibe for a coffee place- and definitely more lounge like and not just a pseudo-starbucks atmosphere.

Went here for New Year's. Very different fromy my past experiences of a laid-back place -- it was frantic, packed, and the opposite of relaxing, much the way I've seen it many a weekend when I've simply walked past, too overwhelmed by the crowd. Now I know to do that any evening I'm tempted to stop -- keep walking.

I grabbed an outdoor table for two while my date went inside to grab us drinks. More than 20 minutes later, he escaped with a pair of bluish, sugar-rimmed lemon drop martinis in hand.

Apparently the bar staff was so swamped, he had to get what they were making even though he didn't know what it was, exactly. VERY lemony, in a lemony-fresh cleanser sense of the term. Not my style.

I might try Halcyon on a weeknight or afternoon again sometime, but this was a 1-2 star experience, at best (and I love fun crowds -- these poor people were just collectively annoyed at poor service and cramped quarters, not enjoying the holiday).

I really liked Halcyon and here's why. It's a hipster vibe, but despite that it seemed to maintain a good mixed clientele feeling welcoming to all. They're open until 2am. I can get a good breakfast panini with my coffee cocktail at 11pm. And the afore mentioned coffee cocktails are really very good. They have couches, lots of couches, I love couches. The act of settling into a soft reclined position changes ones mood and I think it really sets the tone of an establishment.

Stand out drinks were the insomniac, and Cazadores Anejo Paloma, which I recommend sans salt. The smores looked awesomely fun, you make your own toasting them over a sterno flame at your table, paninis are a welcome power up late in the evening.

Bartender Eric makes a good drink.

In any of my numerous trips to Austin, I had always passed this place with intrigue, and was determined to try this place one day.

You can't go wrong with the following formula - coffee, drinks, music, lounge chairs, and outdoor seating.

I dunno, maybe this formula might be common and others may have run into it elsewhere, but in my travels, the only place that has used this formula (that I know of) is a place called The Open Cafe in Paris, FR.

I've had a drink here, and also a caffe latte here (two different visits - once in the afternoon, and once in the evening). Well, the drink of course is pretty standard fare. The caffe latte was WELL-MADE: not too hot with the right amount of foam and froth - not too many places (i.e. Starbucks)know how to make a good latte anymore!

The interior is kind of dark, but has some comfy chairs, and is lounge-like. I opted for the outdoor seating, which ranges from table/chairs, to the ledge/stools (my choice). I had a book in hand, and started reading it with my drink well into the evening.

The greatest thing about this place is that it's got the elevated sidewalk where the seating is located, and you get a view of the street/intersection! If you like to people-watch, the location is conducive to it.

Another awesome thing is the fact that even though it is centrally located amidst other bars/clubs, it's still a relaxing place - not too loud, kind of "chill," and you can still talk to your partner without having to shout.

In my humble opinion - and this might be just a nature of their business - but I thought that the staff, though friendly "enough," could've been a tad bit more engaging (they weren't horrible though!)

I'd come here again - esp for those who want a casual, yet classy, place to hang out.

I remember we went here Halloween night. The atmosphere was so much more relaxed and chill compared to all the craziness out on 6th street. I really liked the aura.

My friend ordered some kind of drink with espresso and a shot of something, it was terribly strong and bitter and sugar didn't help any.. I dunno, maybe the espresso shot was old. I do also remember my friends saying the bartender ASKED for a tip? How rude. Maybe this mixologist was having a bad night.

Aside from that , I'll come back. Maybe that bartender won't be there.I would probably go on a date here. I think this place may be one of my new hang outs. I hope they bring back the s'mores :(

I like it!

It's downtown, they have exposed brick, nice tables and wooden bistro chairs, club chairs, AND banquets that give that section the feeling of a private living room.

The barristras are nice, interesting and competent, and don't mind the least if you sit there all day.  Just remember to tip very well if you take advantage of their hospitality.

This is the one coffee house  that seemed "clique-free".

I would have given them 5 stars, but the music is distracting and...bad.

$6.66 for a fruit smoothie.  Are you kidding?

Good atmosphere.  This is a great place to relax at night, but the music was a little too loud - I couldn't hear the person sitting across from me.
