This review is for Pam at Hairy Situations. I decided to try her after reading a few Yelp reviews, after a crappy way-too-many-layers haircut i got somewhere else.
I think Pam does a great job of diagnosing problems and coming up with great ways to fix them based on your preferences. Like today, i went in and said something like "ugh, my hair, i'm not really happy with it, it looks really blah," and she knew just what to do.
I've never been disappointed; I've always been really pleased. She confirms things throughout the cut as well.
Pam is a really cool person, and a smart and creative stylist I highly recommend
I have followed Nikki around for the past 5 years to have her cut and color my hair, from Dallas to Austin, and she even flew out to San Francisco while I lived there and needed a haircut. She always gets it right, even when I don't know what I want. Seriously, all I have to say is, "Do something kind of awesome." and she does it. I dunno how, but it happens every time.
I'm even more excited now that she's at Hairy Situations, which is probably the best salon in Austin. Nevermind that its in the coolest location in the whole city, or that they offer drinks while you get your hair "did", but the staff is suuuuuper friendly and they have great product lines available for sale, too. All in all - its a fantastic salon. And then, after you get a stylish new hair-do, you can walk out the door of the salon and BAM!, you're struttin' your stuff on the main street of south Austin.
If you're new to the place, its best to call and book in advance, and always always always ask for Nikki (last initial is G, just in case there are 2 Nikki's, but I don't think there are). She does a great job, is very professional, and will work with you if you are super picky and neurotic - like me. I've recommended her to a lot of my friends, guys and gals and everyone has been very impressed.
Seriously, if you're looking for a good haircut, go here. Problem solved.
The timing was right for me to get a new stylist. I asked around, and a friend very highly recommended Amber Silver at Hairy Situations.
The people in the front were friendly while I waited, although I know more about some of them than I probably should. No bother...they serve wine and blah blah blah, BUT they serve super cold Coke Zeros. After walking a few blocks to get there, that Coke Zero was damn delicious!
I got back to see Amber and told her what I wanted. ... And I wasn't even totally sure what I wanted! I said a bit of this and a bit of that and I really feel like she listened, but also brought out things I hadn't thought of.
She was a lot of fun and very personable. As she styled, she told me what she was doing, which was very useful to me, since I do pretty much basics only.
A few stylists ago took me way blonder than what I had wanted and now I'm way dark... and I LOVE it! For the first time since I got maroon highlights, I absolutely LOVE my hair (rather than a "yeah, it looks good.")
Since I moved to Austin three and a half years ago, I've searched high and low for someone who can cut my hair and make it look good, even when I have no idea as to what "looking good" entails.
Nikki G. at Hairy Situations (formerly of Birds Barbershop) has made me believe in the power of a good haircut. I went to Birds a couple of times, to other people, since it was close to work, and quick. But as soon as Nikki took out her scissors, my relationship with other stylists was over. Nikki knows my hair, and she makes an effort to get to know me, so the entire experience is like hanging out with a friend, rather than stylist-customer.
Although Hairy Situations is in less of an ideal location, getting a haircut with Nikki now gives me an excuse to get out of North Austin and down where all the fun is.
Nikki was able to fix my less-than-perfect hair cut without having to cut much more off. Hurray!!!! I feel so much better!!! Go see her. She is wonderful.
I agree with some of you and I hate to complain....but my friend Danielle told me to go there...the parking was hilarious...I ended up parking on a hill by the big cupcake.
I waited 30 minutes past my appointment....I was offered tons of drinks, which I took one, and then wondered why they would want me drunk and now I see why...my cut alone was 85 dollars...my hair is short to begin with, and I wanted the Victoria Beckham bob at the time, and the girl did not listen to me, made it uneven so I had one side longer than the other and no I was not drunk it was the truth....
The stylist told me to only use Preference by Loreal hair dye and said I needed to dye my hair which is strawberry blonde, and I was like, well, thank you, and she seemed so put out to even be there...she must have been having a bad day...I even left a considerable tip but kind of regret that now....some stylists were cool, the place looked very nice and very Austin, but I am never going there again....she made my bob crooked and of course tried to sell me every Bumble & Bumble product (which I already had but just let her go buck wild with the sales pitching) and the cut took like an hour and my stylist now can get it done in like 15 minutes...
I actually regret going there but I know how hard it is to find that right place but save your money!! It is just hair and it will grow out in a few weeks anyway!
I know many of you are happy there, but I go to an amazing person that I found (and I searched high and low for months) out of all places at a freaking Fantastic Sams....just find what works for you but if you go here, drink it up, sisters and misters, because you are going to pay!! :)
Good Luck!! Hair a great day, I mean, have a great day...
The five stars aren't necessarily for Hairy Situations itself, which is certainly a clean, serviceable salon, but for my stylist Pamela Ross. She was recommended to me when I told a friend I needed to break up with my current stylist due to skyrocketing prices ($80? Seriously, this ain't NYC, people!) and too many appointments where I'd wait for half an hour or longer past my scheduled time to be seen.
It's important to me that I enjoy the company of the face in the mirror above me, and I instantly felt good about Pam. She's one of those wise-beyond-her-years people who has an intelligent, interesting perspective on politics, social relations...and Project Runway. She's not a hipster, but she has mad fabulous style.
Most importantly, I've never had a bad haircut. In fact, I received more compliments on my hair since she's been cutting it than with the $80 stylist.
She's affordably priced for a good haircut ($50) and I've rarely had to wait more than 5-10 minutes (if at all) for her. She schedules early morning appointments on Saturdays, something I highly value. I don't use salon products in general and Pam has never once recommended I buy a single product from the salon.
I almost don't want to give up my secret, but she deserves to be successful. Pam is a hard worker and a great stylist.
I went to this salon upon the recommendation of a few people.
Granted these were all people I've met in passing, so it's not like they were highly motivated to tell me the truth about this.
I made an appointment for a Saturday morning. I already had a haircut that I liked. A lot. I just needed to have it shortened, and I had to find a new placed since my old stylist is still in Dallas.
I walked in, and sat for twenty minutes past my scheduled appointment time. No one offered me anything. No one spoke to me, actually. When the stylist finally came to retrieve me (and she hadn't had a prior customer, so there was no reason for her to be tardy), there was no apology.
Whatever, I can get past this crap if they do a good job.
I explained to her that I liked my haircut, and I liked the layers - I just needed everything shortened up by a few inches. Simple enough, right?
Two freaking hours later (during which she attempted to hard sell me on $40 hair products), I left. I was quoted the price of $45 on the phone, and found myself paying $55.
To add insult to injury, I got home and discovered that my hair was shorter. But only the bottom layers. She had just charged me $55 to make my hair one length all over, even after my explicit instructions to keep the layers.
What a waste.
Whenever my hair starts to look a little too mad-scientist-y, I make an appointment with Laura to get a haircut. I have short, thinning hair these days, and you would think it wouldn't be too difficult for someone to cut it properly, but over the past 3.5 years, I've had my hair cut in four different cities by 8 different people and only been consistently pleased with one--Laura. And I get to talk about good movies, bad movies, and German board games with her throughout my haircut. Even though I've moved further north now, I plan to continue going to Laura for my haircuts!
To cut a foot of hair off is a pretty frightening thing, but it was time for crazy cat hair lady to go and for a kid to get a wig. On a random recommendation, called up Hairy Situations and asked for a professional who was superb with short hair, and whoever answered the phone recommended "Brooke".
I must have had about 3 mimosas as she was lopping off my hair, but all the nerves were for naught. She is a professional and a perfectionist. I've gone back this past year about 3-4 times for cuts and colors and have referred 5 friends to her. Nobody has been disappointed and all come out looking magnifique!
I can't tell you what a relief it is for someone like me who has NO idea about hair styling to go and tell a stylist...make me look great and make it low-maintenance and they do exactly that. Word to the wise, if you have an idea of the type of haircut you want and she doesn't think it will suit you, you're probably better off taking her advice and you'll probably come out with a better cut.
Last gems of wisdom:
Cost: Men's (~ $30), Women's cut (~ $50), color (~$100)
Make a reservation, but be on time! They may not be there if you're 15-30 minutes late.
Flexible scheduling: i.e. They can meet you after work hours if you don't work in the downtown area and can't get there till 6 or so.
Great place... having just moved here and not knowing where to go, the people here were friendly, inviting and a pleasure to deal with. I am making my 2nd appointment so I guess I like it!
I went to Johann Escoabar the first time and I am going again. She gives great cut.
I don't love Hairy Situations as much as I love my stylist, Lindsey! She is amazing with my hair, she know it perhaps better than myself. I've been seeing her for a couple of years now, and have referred several of my friends to her (men and women) who are also repeat clients now!
I don't know how walk-in's work in this kind of salon, but if you need a cut you should call ahead and ask for her.
The Good:
:: the place is really interestingly run. each stylist rents his/her own space, instead of working for the salon. cool! so they can set their own hours and their own fees.
:: reasonable prices charged. you can pick who you want in whatever price range. i pay $40-50 for a haircut, which includes a shampoo, a cut, and a styling.
:: the interior is really fun and feels open
:: free mimosas and other beverages while you get your hair cut. sweet!
:: great location off of south congress. when i am done, i go next door to the monkey store and waste money on cute stuff.
The Bad:
:: if you try different people, you will get different results. i really like a couple of people i've tried there, and there are a couple of other people i am not as crazy about. they didn't know how short was too short to go on my hair, so when they were done i ended up looking like a teenage asian boy. so find someone good and stick with that person as long as you can!
:: my favorite stylist can be really really moody grumpy at times. makes me kind of uncomfortable. ack.
The Ugly:
:: none.
Would I go back? Definitely. I'll just drink more mimosas so I can better deal with my favorite stylist on her bad days. :)
This place is IN.
I've been going to Doug for about 5 years now. Hairwise, I've gone long to short, and back to long again. The last time he gave me layers to remove some weight out of my long hair, and they grew out very nicely so my hair looks great even a few months later. Though I moved to Dallas two years ago for work, I still go to Austin twice a year to get my haircut by Doug because he is the best hair dresser!
I really enjoy the Hairy Situations location as well...good music, drinks, and a very friendly atmosphere. It's at a nice location on South Lamar too so if you bring a friend or SO, they can shop around while you get your hair done.
Admittedly, I am a bit of a haircut snob (not that I brush my hair in real life or anything). When I moved to Austin from LA in 2004, I was very used to a certain level of stylist skill, and I was terrified that some hick-ass Texas "beautician" would f@*% up my hair. I went to two stylists that were marginal but nothing special before a friend of mine recommended Doug Mesh. No one has touched my hair ever since (it has been over three years!!!).
Doug is very skilled at his craft, always asks plenty of questions to make sure he is both doing his best job and doing what you want done to your hair, and is always willing to ensure your complete satisfaction with his work. Case in point: once my stupid ass asked for some pretty extreme blonde highlights. Doug did exactly what I asked, beautifully. The next day, I realized that I couldn't exactly go to work with such awesome hair. I called Doug and asked him if he could please, please, please take down some of those crazy highlights. He made time to do it the very next day, no questions asked. Pretty darn nice I must say. If you are looking for a creative stylist who is friendly, knowledgeable, and really down to make sure you love your hair, ask for Doug at Hairy Situations. He rocks.
When I left Austin for Boston, I went through four colorists before I found someone as good as Melody at Hairy Situations to do my color. FOUR. And I still think she is a bit better than my person in Boston. She is amazing with color, especially if you're going blonde. She is also a person that will go the extra mile and work late to accomodate your schedule when you're in a pinch. I don't want people to take advantage of her flexibility/kindness based on that comment, so if you keep her there after hours make sure to tip accordingly. She's worth it!
Since I recently moved to Austin, I had no idea where to get my hair done...which is a scary prospect. A friend and I went here (they gladly squeezed us in one Saturday afternoon) and couldn't have been happier. They greeted us warmly with offerings of booze, we didn't have to wait long to be seen, and the vibe in the place was really relaxing. I saw Aryck (I hope this is how you spell his name) for an overall color and trim. He knew what I wanted with little direction - I'm not good at verbalizing...more of a "do what you think will look good" kind of girl. My hair looked great and his prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be back!
A friend of mine told me about Hairy Situations and our fab stylist, Amber, about a year or so ago, and I've been very satisfied with her talent and the salon's funky, fun environment ever since. I'm always offered a much appreciated glass of wine upon entering (after a looong day of teaching high school English), and though sometimes I have to wait (and when doesn't one occasionally at any salon?), I can settle in on the sofa, read the Chronicle or watch the SoCo crowd strut by on the sidewalk. Amber's prices are very reasonable, and I love every cut she's given me, and she's a great colorist as well. I try to schedule my appointments on Fridays, too, so I just HAVE to go out and show off my new 'do. In fact, one Friday evening the owner even called a cab for me so I could meet my sweetie at Fado, AND poured me a second glass of wine!
Great location, great people, great hospitality. For those reviews that complained about not getting offered anything to drink, well, you can always ask and i'm sure ye shall receive.
I first visited here when my boyfriend got his haircut (by Laura). They served me red wine while I waited (though I hear their mimosas are dee-lish). When my boyfriend paid up, I checked, and they followed the swirl of his hair and cut the extra hairs at the back of his neck very well. Needless to say, I was very impressed. I decided to try them out myself this Thanksgiving holiday. I got my hair cut by Pam. I was served blush wine this time. True to other reviews, Pam is very good, straightforward, and I like her personality too. She did not use techie hair products on me and followed my wishes not to use a razor on my hair. She took a look and feel of it, and yeah, I am loving my hair, and I will definitely try my best to get my hair cut here by Pam again. Definitely recommended.
Top 10 signs you know you just got a shitty haircut:
1. The salon is too funky for its own good. When each and every stylist on premise has punk rock hair, more tattoos than Red Dragon and more perforations than a bulletin board, you have to be a *leetle* wary that their hipness is just masking bad snipping skills.
2. Your stylist (Doug, in this case) says he "wants to try out a technique that I learned at the Bumble & Bumble clinic." Wrest the scissors out of his damn hands and throw them across the room. Don't let him do this.
3. Your stylist spends your entire time in the chair talking smack about other salons around town. Prolly 'cuz he was fired from all of them.
4. Your haircut takes 2 hours, mainly because he spends the last hour straightening your hair to mask the badness of the layers in the back.
5. Your layers look like a tiered wedding cake.
6. When you get your crap haircut fixed by an actual stylist with talent at another salon (see my Salon at Saks review), this new stylist points out how your haircut is a fine example of bad-itude to the assistant he's training.
7. While he explains and points this out, he actually says "if you ever do this (as he points at said wedding cake layers), I will kill you."
8. There is crap-tastic "artwork" on the walls done by some of the staff that looks like someone used a bedazzler on canvas. Of course, this only adds more "indie street cred" to the kitschy hipster vibe, right? Wrong.
9. He proceeds to charge you $50 for this cut. Next time I want to throw away $50, I am just going to drive down the street chucking money out the window. It won't take 2 hours and leave me with bad layers.
10. You call to book an appointment and they schedule you with Doug. You are so screwed if this happens.
But, I will give them an extra star because everyone else's hair seemed to turn out well and they offered me wine while I waited. Apparently not enough, though. I needed a whole damn bottle.
And no, I won't be going back.
It was hard at first to up sell myself on a salon cut from the SuperCuts, but after getting terrible cut after terrible cut, I bit the bullet and went high dollar. (Fabian is still one of the cheapest at the salon.) That was seven years ago and Fabian has been cutting my hair ever since. He must be doing something right because guys ask me all the time where I get my hair cut. I send them here.
Michael Fenner is my favorite. more fun than a bag of hammers, and he will make you look like a rock star, or whatever it is that you want to look like.
I've been here twice since I moved to Austin; both times I saw Doug for haircuts. On my first visit, my hair was really long and, even though I was dying to cut it off, I was apprehensive about doing anything different with a brand new stylist so I just asked him to clean up the layers and trim it. My layers were looking extremely ratty and far too wispy on the ends--it was a bit too close to Carol Brady's 70s fullet for my liking. I was very happy with the way he chipped into the layers and made the ends seem thicker so that they matched the rest of my hair. I went back this past week to cut off my hair and was very pleased with the short asymmetrical haircut Doug gave me. I am extremely lazy with my styling routine (who am I kidding--there is no styling routine and I never even brush my hair most days) and, though I am perfectly willing to spend good money on a haircut, I refuse to spend more than $4 for shampoo; there is nothing worse than going to a stylist who basically tears you a new one because you use drugstore products on your hair or who doesn't take you seriously when you say you absolutely will not put any effort into styling. Doug never asked me what brand of products I used and has never tried to sell me anything expensive. When cutting my bangs and the hair around my face, he made sure I tried on my glasses to see if it was too long and then adjusted accordingly. Both times he told me that if I had any problems with the haircut or needed a bang trim or my layers kept up between appointments, I could stop in and he would do it at no charge. Plus we also talked about the Wii, which was awesome. All in all, I've been happy going to Doug and will continue to do so in the future.
Disclaimer: Given the nature of some of the reviews below (i.e., one review and no friends), I would like to make it known that Doug did not ask me to write a review.
Lindsey cuts and colors my hair and has done so for years! I trust her with whatever color or cut she suggests whether it's the color of the week or my going to grandma's house color!
I love this salon, and my hair stylist in particular. Brooke Ellington who does amazing things with hair, she gives an awesome head massage while washing your hair. And she will make you smile and laugh for sure with her great personality...check her out..
I've never been to anyone but Melody. I was referred by a friend and have stuck with her ever since. She always has new, fun ideas, does phenomenal color, and is just generally enjoyable to be around. I think it might take an act of God for me to change hairdressers again.
**UPDATE BELOW**
I found that this salon was top ranked on http://Yelp.com, and since my boyfriend was paying for it, I called to see if they had an opening the weekend before New Year's 08. They scheduled me with Brooke, who later placed an ad in Rare Magazine, making it very hard to book her now as randomly as I did at first. She was very knowledgeable about current trends, and knew exactly what I wanted even though I had a hard time explaining it. They use Shu Uemura's line of hair products, which are so wonderful and amazing (and expensive), and go all out when it comes to blow-drying your hair, meaning they'll flat iron/style it for those of us that need it, too. The shampoo/haircut was a whopping $55 dollars, plus a $35 bottle of Satin Design White Tea Polishing Milk (Shu Uemura) that I was sold on after she put it my hair before blow-drying it. I know, that's very high, but you are paying for quality and I would do it again if my guy would pay for it! Five Stars!
**UPDATE!**
I saw Doug yesterday to adjust the hack job some crazy from a well know trendy, overpriced salon on South Lamar that rhymes with CURDS called a haircut. Doug is the most caring hair dresser I've ever been to. No lie! He is super meticulous and really REALLY loves what he does. He explained everything he was doing step by step, and even gave me some tips on styling my always straight hair wavy. My hair is totally amazing! I love it!
I HEART DOUG!!!
Great place, love the S. Congress area, fun area to shop and hang out... There is a Freebirds around there now... My gf's friend's friend works at Hair Situations so I got my harcuts from here. It was great, pretty inexpensive for a salon IMO. Highly recommended!
I've had my hair cut by Pam twice. Before I moved to Austin I had a hair stylist I loved who had revolutionized my hairstyle expectations and perfected an edgy, rocking look that felt both at one with current trends and yet unique to myself. Naturally, it was hard for me to trust anyone else.
Pam has done a great job with my hair. Both cutting and coloring, she has met my newly raised expectations for my hair without breaking a sweat. Not only is she capable and creative, she LISTENS, which is paramount for someone like me who came from an already great relationship with my previous stylist. She listened to my long, highly specific instructions and explanations and then realized that vision perfectly. When she wanted to add her own personal touch or try something that differed from my instructions, she made sure to ask me. For the most part I trusted her judgment and ended up being EXTREMELY happy with the result. My new haircut is reminiscent of, builds upon, and is every bit as good as the best haircuts my last stylist gave me. Even after crawling out of bed, throwing on a sweatshirt and jeans, and driving to the mall on a Saturday morning looking like a schlub, I still got complements on my hair. Thanks, Pam!
Oh, and she's also offered me wine both times, which makes me smile. I don't know if that's standard in Austin, but it was a first for me. It ain't Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but it's complementary!
Brooke, Brooke, Brooke, I hesitate to write this as I am afraid I will no longer get you to myself!! I am not one to experiment, but after our discussion of cut and "crazy" red highlights, I LOVE MY HAIR!!! I get compliments all the time on how good the bold red color looks, and I have VERY conservative friends. Thanks again Brooke for your talent and consult!! See you soon!!! Blue next time?? j/k
Brooke gave me da hook up. My luv for the Korean soaps went off the chain when I tried to get my hair cut in Ktown New York Citay... and Dr. Dimento went to town like Edward Scissorhands on the rock. Brooke broke it down like Boyz II Men back in da day and holla'ed to say my last haircut was a dizaster. Told my ass I need to moisturize my hizair and how to condition like a rock star. Fun peeps all around. I'd go back here again in a heartbeat. Solid haircut for 50 bucks. Fo real.
Doug is tops! I moved away from Austin over a year ago, and have been so upset by the prospect of letting someone else cut my hair that I simply haven't visited a salon since I left. If I could afford it, I would fly back to Austin just to get a haircut by Doug.
I was referred to Doug by multiple friends, and I happily became a longtime (10 years) client. I, in turn, have recommended Doug to several people - all of whom have been satisfied customers. My sister even makes a regular 3+ hour trek from Dallas to get her hair cut.
I always found Doug to be completely professional -- he offered clear explanations, asked and answered questions, and shared his honest opinions. He *always* made it clear that if I ever had any questions or problems regarding my haircut I should not hesitate to let him know.
Before I visited Doug, I hadn't put much thought into my hairstyle, and I can honestly say his fabulous haircuts gave me a newfound sense of pride in my locks. (I had long wanted to drastically shorten my lengthy hair, but it was my confidence in Doug's talent and skill that gave me the courage to finally do it.) I cannot recommend him enough!
I won't go back. My hair is to my waist, but whatever. They charged me $175 to dye my hair when I was told it was going to be around $100 (which I still thought was too much, but I was going to a special event so I figured I would splurge). They didn't have to bleach anything as I'm naturally a strawberry-blonde, and the kicker was it was *supposed* to be permanent, but it washed out with in a couple of weeks and then said I could come back to have it redone for $75!!
I'm kinda confused by all the "super hip salon" references some of the other people have made because the salon itself really isn't all that hip at all. I'm telling you this because when my favorite stylist EVER moved there, I was pretty shocked. However, it's a nice spot and she seems happy, so hooray for Hairy Situations... Now on to the important stuff: Lyndsey. She's so freakin good that I don't even tell her what I want anymore--she figures out what works with my face and style and *snip snip* there it is! She even remembers what we've tried in the past that I didn't like and avoids it AND she argues with me when she knows that what I want is mental (i.e. my fascination with 70's curls never materialized because she informed me it was the worst idea I'd had in a long time). She doesn't talk, talk, talk for no reason, she informs you when it's time to start considering the gray hairs as an enemy as opposed to nature's highlights, she pays attention to what you want and does what actually works... in short, she's my favorite stylist for lots of reasons. Now don't book an appointment with her because I don't want to have to wait 6 months to get one myself. (UPDATE! Lynsey has since moved to Vain on the eastside - http://www.vainaustin.com - and though I wish Hairy Situations the best, I'm following her and highly suggest you do the same as she is THAT good.)
Had my hair cut for the first time at Hairy Situations about a month ago on the recommendation of several friends. Nice place, cool people. Anne Shackleford did the cut. She did a great job on my hair and made me feel really comfortable. She explained all the products she used, gave me advice on how to style my hair, and was all-around, really helpful and friendly. Best of all, at the end of the appointment, while she did talk with me about good products for my hair/lifestyle, I didn't feel at all pressured to buy (or to buy there).
i would have liked to have experienced this salon. But apparently they are too cool to answer the phone. and yes they are open at this time and not its not a special holiday
i find hairy situations to be a very professional salon. the people at the front desk are always friendly and helpful. i followed my hair stylist, doug, there. i have been following him the last 10 + years to whatever salon he is currently at because he has always done such a great job on my hair. i'm moving to nyc and i bemoan having to find a new stylist who i can trust with my hair. i have been really happy that he moved to this salon. it's a great location and, like i said quite professional.
