I took a bare minimalist approach to my hair for awhile-I just let it go au naturel-meaning I stopped coloring it, let it be gray, and got my own clippers and cropped it myself. So, I didn't visit anyone for a while.
Well, I got bored of all of that, missed my curls, and was like, "crap, this gray hair is not me!"
Thus, I made several mistakes this past week. The first was signing up at as a hair model for all over color at a salon in SF, had a small fee for materials but I paid big time with the weirdest damn brown hair color I had ever seen. In different lighting, it was either ok or very bad. People said it looked good! I think it needed a giant hair band to hide it. That was Monday. Then on Tuesday, I tried to "self help" with home chemistry, and went Clairol bleach in a box, and all I achieved was this awful straw-yellow, orange-tinted chemistry disaster color. People said it looked great, but I was like, I want to take what you are on, 'cuz I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror right now...so on Wednesday....
I called Thia immediately. I said, "Miss Thia, I haven't been in in a while, but I need a color intervention!" Thia promptly got me in, inquired as to what was going on so that she could set up the appt. time accordingly, and so it was set. I had my intervention today! YEAH! I was completely honest and explained my week of strange hair model color, then my home chemistry experiment, and anything else. Thia took it all in, went over what was best, and we proceeded...
Well, stuuuupid me, I should have just seen Thia IN THE FIRST PLACE when I was feeling some color, actually, lack thereof, 'cause I wanted platinum, and that is what I got, and I couldn't be more delighted! Thia's attention to achieving exactly what I had been dreaming of for like, four months was/is impeccable. She really worked hard to get my locks de-strawed, and whatever she used to do so was ever so gentle to my scalp, I felt nothing but delight, sitting in that chair, readin' mah Vogue magazine, sippin' on coffee...
Anyway, you asked me for the time, and I have built a clock, forgive me, but I am just trying to express 1. HOW desperate and awful I personally felt my hair looked in cow town; 2. How wonderful Thia and her staff worked to make my hair something I can proudly wear sans head wrap, 3. this salon has attitude but not attitude...meaning, this salon, is still a wonderful oasis that makes me feel 'big city' in our little cow town! And let me tell you-I BARTED to the big city and got nothin' but trouble! So stay in the Tri-Valley and think you went to the 'big city"! Get to Hairtini!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Thank you, Yelpers, for guiding me to Hairtini! I have curly hair and I cut my hair myself. I haven't had a professional cut in 6 years. Needless to say I was in dire need of Hairtini.
Ralene is the bomb! She is so much fun to talk to and gave me a wicked cut. She transformed my 80s hair into something fun and professional at the same time.
My cut cost $60 plus I gave her a $10 tip. For me, that's a lot of money but it's totally worth it because I now love my hair!
UPDATE: I saw on Yelp that Ralene moved to Uptown Girls. See my review for them! -

After several great referrals I decided to go to Hairtini to have my hair styled for the car show my club was putting on. I needed a sweet 50's do and Ariel Darling did an AMAZING job! I gave her very little direction and in hardly any time at all I had very cute pin curled hair. All day and night of the show I got compliment after compliment on my hair. Since Ariel did such a great job I went back to her when I needed my hair styled for my friends wedding and she put my hair up in a cute twist with a sweeping bang....very young Audrey Hepburn...I loved it!
The salon itself is adorable! They have incredible artwork from local artist on the walls. All in all a great experience with both Ariel and Thia! -

I hadn't cut my hair or had it colored in an embarrassingly long time...let's just say my last experience was getting a mullet (omg) against my will at an expensive salon in Walnut Creek. I got an appointment at Hairtini on a Saturday morning, no problem! Truth be told, I was a bit nervous because I couldn't find a review of the person who was supposed ro cut my hair anywhere on the Internet! With grown out mullet remnants and a really poor box-dye color job, I was desperate. Tatjana really listened to what I asked for, and made some good calls - I got the greatest haircut and my favorite part, dark dark brown hair with purple lowlights! She did such a great job...my friends are all drooling and want the same color! I'm happy to be the first one to write a review on Tatjana, 5 stars!

Correction to Shannon's one star "review" (that ironically didn't offer any useful review-worthy information of Hairtini): By my calculations, Ralene's name is mentioned in 8 out of the 15 reviews (Shanon's non-review included, my actual review excluded - for argument's sake). That's roughly 50% of the reviews that give some credit to Ralene, not the 90% you mention. Considering Ralene was one of two stylists in the salon prior to last week, the review ratio seems accurate rather than exorbitant. Suspicious one-star review but I'm moving on...
Other than the unintentional rating exaggeration (again, giving the benefit of the doubt), Shannon is correct in that Ralene has moved her services from Hairtini. What's left behind is a very hip, professional, relaxing salon tucked away in Livermore.
The owner/stylist, Thia, is an incredibly talented woman that's created a day-spa-esque environment in the middle of a cowboy wine town. You'll never leave disappointed after a visit to Thia, although you may be disappointed to leave (the chair you lay in for your wash/massage sucks you in, I swear).
Go to Thia, she's got skillz that have me traveling all the way from San Francisco to see her! -

After a year and a half of committing to one stylist, I still love Thia. I find that she's refreshingly honest about what will look good on you and what won't. ("I would never do a bob on you. I just don't think it would work.")
We have now progressed to the point where I tell her "You know what I like, just do what you want." And it's usually a variation of something I've had before, but it's always a little bit different and I always like it. Now to be honest, there have been a couple occasions where I'm a tad doubtful. I will never be able re-create her blowouts, so I get nervous when I think of how my hair will look once I get my hands on it. But, once I've gone home and had the chance to play around with my hair I am reassured that once again, I got a great cut. Lesson learned... I will never doubt Thia's judgment when it comes to my hair.1 Previous Review: Show all »

After moving to Livermore, I decided to switch hair stylists. Driving to Burlingame is no longer an option, as I'm not currently employed.
Thanks to Yelp, I no longer go blindly into selecting a new stylist. Luckily, I have you to steer me to people like Thia.
I have thick, coarse unruly hair that needs expert attention. I literally have to warn people that have never cut my hair ahead of time, just so they know it's gonna take some extra time. My mom did her first perm on me in the 80's and it took her 12 hours. I have many horror stories of people effing up my hair because they were so intimidated. You get the drift.
Thia did an EXCELLENT job. She cut off about 3 or 4 inches and was totally cool about it. She worked hard, yet was able to listen attentively to my needs and my constant stream of jibber jabber. I chat up my stylists, cause what the hell else am I supposed to do for the 2 hours it takes to cut and style my mop???
Thia took the time to really understand what I wanted and made sure I was comfortable with my extreme change. She even took a before and after photo. I've gotten a LOT of compliments. I feel like Lenny Kravitz after he cut off his dreds.
I liked her cool little shop and the relaxed vibe. If you are looking for something a little edgy and an awesome cut, visit Hairtini! -

Yey Hartini! Yey Thia!
Im a fan. I have been going there for over a year and am very happy.
Not only do I feel like I get a great cut/color/treatment whenever I go to Hairtini, but the folks there are super nice, so its a fun place to hang out and I really enjoy my time there.
Ditto what others have said about Thia being honest about what would look good and I feel pretty comfortable just letting her do her thing...which is pretty unusual for me.

When I moved to Livermore I was very concerned about where to get a decent color and cut. I mean, my last stylist I had for over 7 years. I read up and weighed in my Livermore options, deciding on Hairtini. I have a few friends who were are already clients there. That's a pretty good sign. Ariel at Hairtini is the bomb. From my first visit I knew this would be a relationship that would last. She matched my color perfectly, which isn't always an easy task and even offered a little insight as to how to enhance my current style. Finding a stylist that won't chop off too much or too little is also hard to find but Ariel did a great job. I'm in the process of growing my hair long and she cut off just enough to keep my ends healthy with out setting me back a few months. All the other stylist and artists are great and the salon has a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Hairtini has a great retro feel to it, from the cool pinup art to the antique beauty tools it's hard not to find something to look at. I'm really happy I found this hip salon in what most people consider a cow town!

Received a nasty email using really bad language from a Thia supporter accusing me of being Railene. The picture on the email is the same as Thia's sister so I can only assume this is her sister who is over-reacting to any less than positive reviews. This is a shame - please re-read my review - I was giving Thia the benefit of the doubt of having a bad day just like everyone does. I won't give this a second chance now because of this unprofessional behavior and response on Yelp.

So, here I am, a good two weeks after my haircut from Ariel and my bangs are STILL way too short!!! I look absolutely ridiculous because short bangs DO NOT look good on me at all!
Usually, I don't like to write bad reviews, especially because I think that Ariel is a very sweet person and I really enjoyed talking to her but, but I went there to get a trim and that is what I'm reviewing. If you like this place, then by all means. So, I told her off the bat that my bangs were too short, but of course by that point it was too late. When I left the salon I didn't think my hair looked that bad, but the next day when I styled it my usual way I saw how absolutely horrible it looked; bang FAR too short and uneven! The thing that really fired me up was this: 1.) I flat out told her, I do not like my bangs short, 2.) I told her how I like to wear my bangs, 3.) As a hair dresser she should to pay more attention to how her client wears their hair before even touching the scissors, 4.)We talked in depth about how important it is for a hairdresser to understand the clients wants, & how bad it sucks to have a haircut your not happy with and 5.) I paid a fair amount of $ for a "trim" that looks like a 7 yr old did it.
I hate to sound so nasty, but after the last 5 reasons you would be pissed too!
If you do happen to go to Hairtini, just be sure to point out exactly long/short you like your bangs and make sure you PAY ATTENTION before it's too late! Good Luck!

so after reading everything that's been going on, on this yelp page I'll update my review.
i have never had my hair done by Thia but have been to hairtini on a few occasions. it is an awesome salon. i assisted for Blair, Thia's younger sister and Blair had assisted for Thia...so i guess that makes her my grandmother in my training.
here's what i know about Thia. she is a hard working dedicated professional hair stylist who lives and breathes her job. she is a hair dresser in the salon and she is a hair dresser when she leaves the salon....which i hear she never leaves. for some people doing hair is just a hobbie for others it's their passion. i believe it is Thia's passion. Thia has strict standards and high expectations on what she believes is quality and will not accept anything less. she also uses and sells only the best products.
it's sad to see everything happening on this thread. i feel bad for everybody involved. i don't know much about raylenn expect for the fact that her friends and clients LOVE her, which speaks volumes for her.1 Previous Review:

Revising my previous review since Ralene has gone to Uptown Girls so that's where I'll be... Hairtini remains a cute small salon but since I cannot vouch for any hairstylist there anymore, I adjusted my rating to three stars based on the atmosphere and salon itsself... salon is small but nicely decorated, but the restrooms are down some weird hall... anyways, they still offer cocktails and that always deserves a bonus star

this is the cutest salon, and thia is an amazing hair stylist, she gives a great cut, color! if you are ever in need of a hair stylist that can amaze you with how good you look walking out of the salon every time, she is it. go check out thia.
