One thing about great stylists, you always go back to them. I have tried other stylists for whatever reasons, Groupon, cheaper prices, whatever, but once you find a good stylist, you've gotta stick with them no matter what . I cannot wait to go back to Leeland. He always takes care of me and I always leave happy. I have been doing my own hair - DISASTER! HELP LEELAND. Make me pretty again!

Annie always does an AMAZING eyebrow job, she understands faces. Do it. Also had some haircuts a while back by Jonathan (I believe) and always was very happy.

Review from del r.
I went to Annie because I needed some serious help with my brows. After reading all the Yelp reviews, I just had to check this place out. I didn't stick around in the salon are for more than a minute, so I'm not sure what that's like. But, from what I saw, it looked clean, inviting and like your typical "high energy" hip salon. Someday, I'll get a cut there.
Annie took me to her beauty closet, where she magically shaped my brows to look gorgeous. They are way, way, way too thin for what I am used to, and what I had in mind. But, it works. They look great. I can't help but, makes sexy faces at myself in the mirror now. It's true!
Annie is super duper friendly, has such a sweet little voice, is funny, she's great at what she does, and she works fast.
Will I be back? Hell yeah! -

After seeing all the stellar reviews about Annie's eyebrow waxing and since I live super close by I had to try Annie! She was super friendly and talkative like everyone said. She talked to me the whole time while waxing my eyebrows so I didn't even feel or realize she had waxed my eyebrows until she was all done haha. My eyebrows came out great!! I hadn't waxed my eyebrows in foreverrr and they were pretty bushy and didn't have much of a shape. But after Annie shaped them, they came out well-defined with a nice arch that i didn't know i could have before, and not too thin. Just right!
I also liked the first time deal of $15 eyebrow waxing. And it's actually an eyebrow SHAPING, so it is definitely worth it. -
Review from Carmen T.
I had an extremely upsetting experience at this salon, but before it, I was delighted to have found an expert at eyebrow shaping in Annie. She was not only great at her skill but sweet, and down to Earth.
The salon? I was never happy with their phone demeanor. The last straw --and why I wish Yelp had a -1 star rating-- was when my antique silver earrings went "lost". I got a call and confirmed that they had them, and when I arrived my earrings were simply "gone". An apology? No. Am I coming back? Double no.Comment from Sean H. of Hairspray 10/31/2010

Unfortunately, the service I have received from Larry has since declined from my last review.
The color I received from him was a disaster! I'm not sure why, but it took him over 4 hours to do my hair. When it was finally done, I left with a blue tint to these platinum streaks that I did not ask for. I showed him a photo of the highlights he had done previously and was very specific. I would also think that because he was my stylist for so long, he would know what works on my hair and what doesn't. So I have really dark hair and these stripes that started out with a blueish tint because of the toner. He said, don't worry it will wash out within a couple of showers. I went home and scrubbed my hair on 3 different washes. All that did was turn my highlights greenish. I was devastated and had to go to San Fran the next day for a work event. I was going to be gone for 4 days!
I called him from San Fran and told him what happened. He was very apologetic. I told him I had to make an appt right away to fix this. Larry said he would come in on his day off to fix my hair.
The day of, he was reminded twice about his appt from the receptionist because it was his day off. I told them to please make sure he was coming because I didn't want to drive all that way if he had forgotten. They assured me he was coming.
I arrive, and wait, and wait and wait. Larry had stood me up. I was livid and needed my hair fixed asap. The receptionist Sharon and stylist Jonathan were AMAZING! Jonathan kept me from purchasing a box color to erase the damage. They were so helpful and gracious!
I did get a call from Larry apologizing profusely that he overslept. I accepted and understood that people make mistakes... He offered to fix my hair and refund my money but at that point, I just wanted someone else to take care of me; I did get my money back right away, thankfully. This was not something I was willing go back to, unfortunately. My hair has been fixed by someone else and I'm so happy with the results.
Larry is a very nice guy and what he used to accomplish with my hair was incredible. I just think he has lost his touch...1 Previous Review: Show all »

One of the best things about Hairspray is how friendly everybody is - it's not one of those places where you walk in and the first thing you think is, "I'm not NEARLY cool enough to be in here."
The other best thing about Hairspray is Kate the stylist.
When I moved back to Hillcrest in the summer of 2003, it had been a LONG time since I'd had a haircut, due to multiple past haircut trauma. It was to the point where letting it be funky and end-split was preferable to the disastrous dead animals that had previously landed on my skull.
One morning I was walking by Hairspray, read the sign, and got brave. Went in and asked the two guys at the counter if there was someone they would recommend who was really, REALLY good with curly hair. They looked at each other and simultaneously said, "KATE!"
She very patiently dealt with my neurosis and has been cutting (and sometimes coloring) my hair ever since. It's been long, VERY short, and a bunch of lengths in between. She always listens, she always takes her time, she never makes me feel dumb for having haircut anxiety, she always has time to blow it out if I ask her to, and she's always fun to hang out with. And I consistently get compliments on my haircut.
Especially if you're a curly girl - go see Kate.Listed in: My Neighborhood

If I didn't love Fred, I would be giving the 2 star salute. Fred Nunez is the best thing going at Hairspray. He's quiet and sweet then casually busts out with his love for leather and cock slings at the most inappropriate times. Me likey the inappropriate. Fred just made my hair the perfect shade of pink and he can do it for you too.
Hairspray's motto is something about not being snobby. If by not snobby you mean bitchy muscle queens with perfectly faux hawked hair judging you from the corner of their eyes, then yeah Hairspray is totally not snobby. It's really the flaming male hair dressers that are so catty. The lady hair dressers are more down to earth and willing to acknowledge your presence. Hey, maybe you're cooler and don't get this kind of treatment. The front desk girls (yes, always girls) are generally polite if unenthusiastic.
It's a great Hillcrest location, close to 5th and with a lot of charm. I like the art they have up because I could've painted it and I am awesome.
When I was in here a couple days ago there was a tranny getting her hair done next to me. It reassured me that I came to the right place. Because when trannies need to look good, they know where to go, guuuuhrl.
Hairspray is for you if you're too cool for school or are willing to be reminded that you're not cool enough for a great haircut from Fred. Peace betches. -

OMG...A HUGE THANK YOU to ANNIE! My eyebrows look amazing!
I have been plucking my eyebrows since I was 17 and never waxed them so I finally let them grow for a year. I have been drawing them and filling them in as well, mind you I have very thin and they not are hairy at all. Annie did such a great job as reshaping them. I actually do have hair and I dont have to draw them in anymore if I don't want to! I am most certainly hooked and will be back for sure.
To add she is soooo very nice and extremely down to earth and know what she is doing, she has been at Hairspray for 14 years! -

Annie is an eyebrow expert! Let me state that for the record! I have never had my eyebrows look that good, EVER! Just love her!
In the end, my highlights came out looking great. But, it took 4 hours! I'm a busy woman, 4 hours of small talk made me wonder what combination of rush and a blind date I was on. If I had all the time in the world, I might go back.
Also, over $250 for a cut and highlights seems way to steep for this relocated Southerner. Snob Free may be what they market, but I thought it felt pretty snobby.... -

REBECCA!!!
I did a home color job...DON'T! (5 years ago) The good news is it lead me to the amazing REBECCA! I went from a stylish flat-top to a long enough to cut off 9 inches to donate for a cause, to a posh style and more. I had never had my hair professionally colored before Rebecca. She is amazing with color.
She knows my hair, my personality and my crazy work schedule and cuts/colors the perfect DO!
Hairspray is not "stuffy" at all. Good music. Resident dog...real four legged friend. Great at working around my crazy schedule and always so nice on the phone.

I was having a crappy day and was super stressed because I was late to my brow appointment here (traffic and parking were horrible). But as soon as I walked in and met Annie, I felt so much better. We talked about her dog while she gently reshaped my untamed eyebrows. Before I knew it, she was putting some amazing lotion and cover-up on me, and having me sit up to take a look. And boy did my eyebrows look amazing. And at $20, what a bargain! I will definitely be back.
The interior is bright and pretty. The receptionists I talked to were very sweet. I give this place a VERY enthusiastic 5 stars! -

I followed Rebecca here from another salon - she does a great job!!! I first met her when my previous hair girl was out of town and I had a home-coloring crisis. Rebecca saved my color and I found out she does great cuts too.
Hairspray is comfortable and funky. It feels like they're always having a mellow party in there. And the shampoo smells amazing.
The parking lot is itsy bitsy but I've never had a problem getting a spot. Just don't expect to park your Suburban, it won't fit. -

After years and years of not finding a stylist I like, I stumpled upon Hairspray and became completely smitten. I've been going to Kate for almost a year now and she does amaaaazing hair. She always seems to understand just what I want and will talk me out of anything that she thinks will be heinous. Like going bright red or bleach blonde..they were quickly vetoed and I thank her for that.
As other people have said, she really gets that curly hair has to be cut differently. What I really love is that she never pushes any products on me like they tend to do at other salons. The only downside is the parking. Sometimes I have had to park a few blocks down but it's def worth the hassle.
Oh and last but not least..Annie does really awesome eyebrows! Like I actually got compliments on them. Her dog is super cute too and laid in my lap the whole time she was waxing. -

Michal is awesome. As a newbie from San Francisco, I was wary about changing stylists. My apologies to Sofia from Oxen Rose, but Hairspray is the new Oxen Rose. Michael is super sweet and like good man he takes it slow and does not make any sudden moves. He never pushes you to make drastic changes to your hair. This is hair therapy! I always walk out feeling like a million bucks inside and out. Michael left Hairspray for a minute and I followed him to that salon too, he is that awesome!
Annie Bear is the best waxer of all of San Diego! It is almost painless and she is very quick. She very chatty and personable and has lots to talk about from books to movies. I almost always forget she is ripping hair from my face. She is that good! -

Like Tara M., I followed my stylist to Hairspray from another place down the street, and I couldn't be happier with her choice to move and my choice to tag along.
The scene just past the front desk is a little overwhelming at first, with a dozen people getting their hair cut, styled, and/or colored to either side of you. However, the people behind the desk (sometimes I see one, sometimes two, and sometimes even three) are always incredibly nice and pleasant. A little dog likes to hang out around the desk area, so he (she?) is always fun to stare and make cute puppy-wuppy faces at when you get tired of looking at yourself in the mirror (which for me is within like three seconds. I'm always reminded of my ever-widening neckline when I go in. Gah.).
It always seems busy inside, but somehow it never seems too busy for you as an individual customer. I guess "bustling" would be the most appropriate term here, but I mean it in the best possible way. The area is always clean and tidy, save for the heaps of hair on the ground that are cleaned up immediately anyway. The walls are decorated with vibrant colors and bizarre-but-fun cartoony prints.
As for my stylist, Krystina, I've been going to her for about three years. She's the only person in southern California I trust with my hair. It's not that my hair is all that hard to cut; rather, she's the only person who knows exactly what I want and how I want it every time I step into her spinny chair, and that's a good, comforting feeling. Plus, she's always super fun to talk to and has fantastic (read: similar) taste in music.
The entire experience of getting a cut at Hairspray makes the slightly-steeper salon prices much easier to cope with. It's a sweet place that successfully mixes business with fun, and then mixes that with straight lookin' good. -

Annie the eyebrow guru is wonderful! She spends as much as needed to sculpt your eyebrows perfectly for you. She also has tons of charming stories to make the experience relaxing and fun rather than focusing on waxing and plucking. Annie also has Saturday hours which is very helpful for all of us that are busy bears :)

New to Hillcrest, I trusted yelp to help me find a AWESOME "eyebrow stylist." Annie at Hairspray is phenomenal! She is careful and quick! Happiness bursts from her mouth as soon as she speaks. I am new to the area and was in need of a haircut. I usually just wait until I go back home to visit, in fear that I choose someone here and they totally mess up my hair... but I haven't been up since Christmas and I haven't cut my hair since Aug. I found this salon through yelp and just put the fate of my hair on the positive reviews that I've read. So I called and made an appt, with no one in particular in mind. I just asked the receptionist to give me whomever is the 'best'. Thus landing me an appt with Michael.
He was ready upon arrival and took the time to sit and talk to me about my hair and what I wanted done. I was basically coming in for a trim and I wanted to grow out my hair. So he understood that I didn't want a lot chopped off. I had side-swept bangs and needed them to be trimmed as well. He took the time to make sure that is wasn't too long, not too short, and make sure that it was exactly what I wanted. So, I ended up with a great haircut.
He was also very friendly and easy to talk to. He endured my questions about hair products and just random things I was talking about... whether he thought I was annoying for asking so many questions or not, he didn't let me know. =) Took it like a champ. ha. I would definitely recommend him and the only reason I gave 3 stars was because I just had a trim. Once I get color done, we'll see how the rating changes. =) -

Hairspray is my new favorite salon! I see myself becoming a regular here!
First of all, I love that Hairspray is open past 6pm! I don't know how working professionals get their hair done without taking the day off! I had a 5:30 appointment with Larry and it was great!
I came in with short hair that needed to be helped big time and Larry came to the rescue! We talked about what I wanted and didn't want before he even touched his sheers. I felt really comfortable with him. It was a pretty technical haircut and it lasted a good 45 minutes. He made sure everything was even and that I was happy with it. He ended up giving me the shortest haircut of my life and I'm totally in love with it!
I was so surprised at my bill! I came to Hairspray expecting to shell out some major cash, but I was out of there with hardly a dent in my pocketbook! I was also made aware that they do eye brow waxing and tinting. I am very particular with my eye brows, but the woman who does it was around the salon and seemed really nice and she had a decent amount of clients come in and out just while I was getting my haircut, so I think it's safe to say she's quick, easy and satisfying haha! That's exactly what I'm looking for.
I plan on going back this weekend for Larry to style my hair and get some waxing done. I definitely recommed Hairspray to everyone! Oh, and they have the cutest and friendliest pooch that just wanders around the salon! It's an all around nice place to be. -

I recently had my eyebrows done here and was not completely satisfied with the results. I will leave my rating at 3 stars, but would like to offer a 5 star rating for customer service/satisfaction on part of the salon. As soon as the owner became aware that I was dissatisfied, he made all efforts to remedy the situation. Seeing as the salon/Annie comes so highly rated, my experience was most likely a fluke. At any rate, the management are nothing but professional! Kudos to them for making every effort to please their customers!

I looked down at my hair while at work yesterday and could not stand the split-end party going on all over my head. After perusing through a bunch of reviews, I decided to call Hairspray and got an evening appointment that same day! Why was this so exciting? B/c it was a Monday, a day when many salons with the exception of Supercuts and Hairspray are closed.
I got there and was pleased to find plenty of parking in their lot. Admittedly, I was 30 minutes early. But, my stylist, Sylvanna (sp?), was also 30 minutes late (working on another client). Although this annoyed me at first, I soon understood why she was late. She takes her time on your hair!
Sylvanna is Australian, has great dreads, tons of experience, and a lot to talk about. It was nice that I didn't have to talk too much, and she was very entertaining. She listened to my, "i just need a trim" request, and did everything to fix my way too long, heavy, style-less mane. Not only did she massage my scalp and recommend a toner, but she also cut, cut, and still cut more b/c my hair still looked heavy (I have thick Asian hair) while also only cutting 1" off the length per my request. After 1.5 hours, it now looks sleek, healthy, and shiny!
Sylvanna took the time to figure out how I handle my hair, made recommendations on keeping it healthy, and educated me on the newest shampoos that contain far less-detergent. It was an all around great experience.
Although I did have to wait (that's why there are 4 stars), I was very pleased with the cut, the great attention to detail, and the reasonable price. I'm definitely going back! -

I used to have Krystina cut my hair because she was the best, but she left. Then I tried this guy named Leland and gadzooks! What a waste of money! My hair looked exactly the same except perhaps a half inch shorter and with bangs. The phone people have always been courteous and extremely nice. The salon itself is super fun and their pup is awesomely cute! I wouldn't really recommend this place to anyone, it's just not really worth the hype.

Hairspray is a whimsical, maze-like, two-story salon. Their services cover skin, hair, and tanning. The hair washing sinks are noticeably comfortable, and their hair product line ranges from Bedhead Tigi to L'Oreal Professional. The walls are covered with bold colored cartoon-like paintings, which convey the vibe of the fun musical Hairspray. Their average haircut price is $40 with styling. Since I only got a haircut there, my rating is solely based on that service and the environment. The staff is diverse and pleasant, and so is the clientele. Their tagline sums it up fairly: A high energy-snob free salon.

I decided to go back and give my stylist another chance and I'm glad I did. She gave me a phenomenal haircut for free and I feel bad about giving such a crappy review. People have bad days and I honestly came in with difficult hair to style (in dire need of color and cut). The place was very clean, no food was eaten at the counter, and everyone was very professional. So I'm changing the rating and will definitely return

I have been using Yelp a lot lately to attempt to find a new "hair person" (as my former one has moved away). I visited Roger at Hairspray for a trim and had an okay experience. The cut looked really good, but he didn't really listen to what I asked (took off quite a bit more than I asked and made the layers shorter than I asked). I would have been open to him making suggestions and asking to do something different, but thought it was rather odd he took it upon himself to do so without telling me in advance. Roger was a laid-back guy, but didn't make much attempt for conversation. He wore a cut-off t-shirt, which I wasn't a big fan of, but realize that would bother some much more than others. It was a $50 cut and took about 45 min. And the search continues for my "hair person"...

So I have really interesting and ridiculous curly/wavy hair that is so hard to manage that I just let it go. I am quite leery of going to hair salons because half of them dont know how to handle curly hair. Well, Hairspray has proven me wrong! They were open on Monday, and I was able to get in right away. The receptionist was so helpful on the phone, and recommended Silvana to me. She was phenomenal! Silvana gave me a wonderful cut, and really practical advice on how to handle my hair, all the while never pushing products on me like some hair salons that I have gone to in the past. I am SO happy with my hair results that I scheduled an appointment on the spot for another month. Thanks to Hairspray, my curly hair looks Fabulous!

Hairspray really sets the standard for what a true "snob-free" salon should be. I get my hair done by Jon Rizo and he is fabulous. Jon pays so much attention to detail and NEVER rushes. I just kick back with some tea and a magazine and let him do his thing. Everyone that works there is fun and friendly and the people watching never disappoints. Not overpriced like other places, but with hair, you get what you pay for :)

I decided to cut my hair off. And it had to be done NOW. So, I called hairspray to find out if they had an appt NOW. They said sure, come in and see Michael. He had some mixed reviews but I was like what the eff let's cut this hair off NOW. So, Michael was rad. My hair is super effing fresh and fancy. He did a very precise job and went over and over my hair making sure my super fab new angle bob was absolute perfection, plus he's a really friendly guy and a hot piece too. Excellent service from Michael, friendly receptionists, clean and energetic salon. Loves it.

ANNIE has been doing my brows for about 8 years now... wow, can't believe it's been that long. She does a phenomenal job. Every time I'm just so relaxed. My brows can get pretty unruly, so Annie is careful to trim them up carefully before getting rid of the excess. Annie does a thorough job to make sure that everything is taken care of. I get appointments when I need them and love the reminder calls. Mr. Bear keeps the front desk all coordinated.... Hairspray rocks and Annie is the best brow artist I have ever seen!

I heart Annie Bear Brow Extrodinare! Annie has a magical way of taking ANYBODIES Brows and making them Divine! She is awesome and a master of her craft. I will never go anywhere else, I will never cheat on Annie !! No matter what the new fad maybe ie:threading or cheapass asian nail joints, Nope Never.. its Annie All the Way for this Girl! I always get complimented on how perfect my brows are, and I give her all the praise. My cousins from Minnesota for years have been raving about the brows, and so I finally took them to her, and now every couple of months they fly in and the 1st thing out of their mouths is , when can we get in to see Annie, the same for my little sister in Humboldt, anytime she is in town - its does Annie have any free time ? She is a wonderful lady with an incredible knack for desgining and sculpting beautiful eyebrows! If you ever have the chance , or are willing to take that risk and get plucked- GO SEE ANNIE!!!!! Ps - Parking does suck , but its worth the craziness to get in with her!
