10 reviews for Hairscapes - The Mane Attraction
So, I'm obviously the nerding out pretty hard, because I ran straight to the computer after getting my hair cut at Hairscapes 20 minutes ago.
Out of antsy-ness I searched for a salon with mediocre ratings that was open on a Sunday, and I came across Hairscapes. I read some pretty mixed reviews, but after I called and found out the cuts were $35, I decided to listen to my recessionista roots and take a risk.
I got there, hoping for a walk-in spot, which I got (even though when I called an hour earlier they said it wouldn't be until 5. sneaky!) I will confirm that yes, this is no "super chic, industrial space" salon. It's pretty homey, with an image that would normally have me backing out slowly. But times are tough and a $65 trim from J salon wasn't anywhere in my near future. I paroused their selection of magazines, and noticed a young stylist with bright purple hair and a shaved panel; I was hoping for her, she seemed like a girl who would deliver the funk!
However, this was not the case. Adrienne came out, a beautiful local lady with a radiating personality. She instantly made me feel at home, and told me honestly what she could and couldn't do with my hair. I showed her a picture; we weren't able to print it off of the internet, but after taking a look at it, she whisked me back into the washing station. I was worried that without the reference in front of her, it wouldn't come out right.
While she snipped away we talked like old friends, and she was so freaking funny. I loved her immediately, her sense of humor was great. I looked in the mirror and was a little skeptical; I could see my large Filipino head looking even larger, and even more boyish. Oh well, I thought, At least she was a great person to get to know.
All of a sudden, she takes of my apron-cape-thing, and viola: it looks EXACTLY like the photo I showed her!! I was so happy!!
There is nothing better than a great stylist who actually LISTENS to what you want. Biggest lesson learned: NEVER judge a book by its cover. The salon is tucked away in the corner of Manoa Marketplace. DON'T be scared off by humble looking storefront. They may not give you organic tea in the lobby but they give you great service and an AWESOME cut. Go see Adrienne if you're looking for precision and happiness!
I went into Hairscapes for a much needed trim. Nothing major just snip off the dead ends and throw in some layers. I understand that they have recently moved and the salon I visited was there new place. The salon itself was trendy and stylish. The receptionist was nice and offered me tea or water upon my arrival. Because of the new location there was some construction going on inside but because of the large size of the place it was not noticeable. Nonetheless, the staff apologized for the noise.
After being seated the stylist asked what I wanted done and then explain what she would do. My hair was washed, cut and blow dried as well as lightly styled. I like the work that she did and the overall atmosphere of the place. I am new to the area so I thought the price was high for what was delivered. Again, that may because I am new to the island. Overall, the like my haircut but don't think it was worth $50
When I called them for a price on haircuts, they said that they started at $35. I said ok, thinking that it was a pretty good deal, but I guess I should've double checked since they charged me $50 + tax at the end. Yikes!! If I knew about this, I would've gone to another hair salon. Telling a customer that a haircut starts at a certain price, but not specifying how much it could go up to - not cool!!
The haircut was alright. It didn't look as awesome as the picture I showed the hairstylist though, but I'm cool with it. I liked how the hairstylist I got was very friendly and gave me many tips on how to style my hair.
This place knows what they're doing, but it doesn't have the wow factor I'm looking for.
Took Kelli M.'s advice and gave Adrienne a try ..... I am so happy with my new "do" and am so grateful to have a set stylist !!! She said the salon is moving to Restaurant Row in November - should be better as it was a bit cramped at this location. The price was $50 for shampoo, cut, blowdry, & style - $35 for return visit cut.
I wanted to write a review update since I had a very good experience at the salon recently. As mentioned in my original review, I've been seeing Caroline for almost a year now. I won't go anywhere else to get my hair cut!
Anyway, recently I had to cancel my appointment at the last minute with her and Caroline was able to accommodate to me and squeeze me in at a different time. She really goes out of her way for her clients and I appreciate that. She always makes sure to give me (and my hair) her full attention and I know that I'm in good hands.
For the first time in my life, I actually get compliments about my hair! The price is affordable and she makes a potentially stressful situation (getting a haircut) enjoyable and satisfying.
I definitely recommend her.

I've been going to see Caroline at Hairscapes for a little over a year now, ever since moving back… Read more »
I go to see Rose. She's the only one who has colored my hair to get it to the right color. And I only went here on accident! That was a long time ago when I was coloring my own hair and I had colored it to platinum blond! I tried to die it back to black and it turned reddish. So I bought another home kit and is didn't work either. I cried to my friends and someone suggested Hairscapes. So I called and just made an appointment with anyone. Good thing it was with Rose! She fixed my hair color so I looked more professional than trashy bar girl.
I would give 5 stars, but sometimes I get someone else to wash my hair and their scalp massage isn't as good as Rose's. But hey, the woman is busy and she can't always wash my hair. That was the case yesterday. I do like my hair color and I wish I knew how to dry my hair like Rose does. And if I bring someone with me who needs a haircut, Rose always tries to work them in.
Based on the excellent reviews received by this place and looking for someplace that would not make me look like a villain from the Harry Potter films (see review of J Salon, below), I called and made an appointment with Mitzie.
Everything people have said is true. She is very nice and she did a very good job cutting my hair. While washing my hair she also gave me a fantastic scalp massage. The only thing I didn't like was the smell of the coloring product she used in my hair. I wasn't necessarily stink, but it was kind of strong and smelled like hair coloring agent (or whatever that is).
And guess what? She flat ironed my hair, too (without asking). At least this time, I did not look as Snape-like, since she did not put product in my hair. Also, I am not sure if it because flat ironing cost a lot, the end price was a bit higher than what I was expecting.
So, I have two questions:
1. Do stylists have a thing about straight hair? My hair has a tiny bit of wave in it. Why does everyone want to iron it away?
2. Am I the only one who didn't like the smell of the hair coloring? No one else has mentioned it, so perhaps I'm being overly critical?
I just got my hair done here today and I put up some pictures. The salon is located in Manoa Marketplace, by the Manoa post office. I see the stylist Mitzie here, and highly recommend her to anyone, however she is particularly good with short hair on women. I have been having Mitzie do my hair for the past few years, and I will not have my hair done anywhere else.
My typical visit includes a cut and color or color touch up. The last time I went I had her color my hair a deep red, and the color lasted nearly three months. When it did start to fade, it didn't turn brassy or orange as some low quality dyes do. This salon also uses Pureology products, which are great, and they offer Pureology for much cheaper than other places like Trade Secret. Mitzie keeps the color formula and cut she did last on a card so that I can get the exact same cut and color over and over again if I so choose.
Prices here are very reasonable. Today I had my hair cut and my color touch up for $73. A haircut with blowdry/style is about $35, and just a cut without any styling is cheaper although im not sure what the price is exactly. The quality of haircut and style you get from Mitzie is the same as any high-end salon where you would pay much, much more. She is also very friendly and will listen to your request before lopping off your hair.
The salon is pretty tiny and doesn't look anything like Aveda, but what matters most is the hairstylist, so I don't really care. I come here to have my hair done exactly as I want it, no scrimping, no regrets later, and I am always satisfied.
I went to see Mitzie at the salon ready to lop off at least 5 inches of my curly hair. I had been wanting to go shorter and I was actually just waiting to find a good salon to go to. Based on the recommendation, I went here.
Before this gets negative, I will say that Mitzie is a lot of fun and she's really nice. She fit me in and did highlights when all I had was an appointment for a cut. The cut and highlights only cost $96. What I think maybe was the problem is that while Mitzie is good at cutting shorter hair, she can go shorter than maybe you might want. I actually think she's probably better with straighter hair. I have curly hair and it's curly down to my root, so when I get a cut I usually have to go longer because it shrinks quite a bit. I brought in a picture and Mitzie actually went shorter than that cut and now I'm disappointed with it. It's probably going to be at least a month before I can have it fixed to where I wanted it.
I read a fellow Yelper's review and thought "what the heck, I'll try it". I was very happy with Mitzi's cut and color. She took excellent care of me. She was personable, friendly, and did a great cut and color. I had a bad cough when I was at the salon, and she got me plenty of hot tea to soothe my throat. I have short corse hair and she made me feel like a million bucks. Last thing, the price was outstanding. I had gone before to Paul Brown for a cut and color and it cost me $300. YES, I'm not exaggerating. So when Mitzi charged me $75 for both cut and color, I am definately going back to her. She told me that she'd rather me be happy with the price and style and to come back to her, rather than overcharge and never see me again. What a terrific place!
